I never post reviews to sites, but given that I had read several rough reviews of this place prior to selecting it, I thought a different perspective would be helpful - I found this place to be great. I held a surprise 30th birthday

I have been to this place on many past occasions and I have never had a problem. However, last Friday I was treated so rudely by the manager and the waitstaff that I will never return. I have told all of my friends about this treatment so they don't waste their time or money in this establishment either. I was there with a group of 8 people, with 2, 5 person reservations (because the management only allows reservations for 5). We were seated at opposite ends of the room. Everyone is mid 30's, professionals, that were well dressed for an evening out. After about 40 minutes when one of my friends came to sit with us from the other group of 4 the manager came over in about 30 seconds and told us that was against bar policy since my friend had a separate table and he asked my friend to return to his table. At which point I asked for the check. Our bill was off by about 30 dollars since they double charged us for one drink. They fixed it and we left without leaving a tip. When the obnoxious manager was told we were paying our check he responded with "good." By the way, there was no one waiting for those tables, place was really quiet. Think this guy is intent on running the business into the ground. Incidentally, walked across the street to Walker's and had great service. If I could give this place negative stars I would. I will never return.

Pros: Great selection of Scotch

Cons: Horrific management; Waiters who over bill.

We were at this establishment last weekend and had it not been for our waiter Josimar, I think we probably would have left. As busy as he was, he was attentive, knowledgeable and warm in a welcoming way.

I would specifically request Josimar if you visit this establishment as the service provided by him makes all the difference.

Pros: Our Waiter

Cons: Management

.

These people have no idea what service means. The staff (not to mention the Manager) are extremely rude and unhelpful. I??ve never felt this uncomfortable in a bar before, and will never go there again.

I don't know if I have ever had an experience with management such as this. It was great getting to meet the Maitre D' from Chez Quis in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but I suppose that his personality has somehow soured in the last 25 years. I think that the goal is to actually replicate the atmosphere of a library, except substitute the quiet mysterious confidence of the modern librarian with rudeness and ostentation.

Very unexpected, but terrible management. Unaccomodating, inflexible, not tolerant of groups over 6 or people who are having a "fun time". Trys to portray exclusive, but fails. Would not go back, much better spots in the city.

management and staff awkwardly try to impose their warped sense of sophistication on their clientele....

we got comments that we were being too loud (we were not), that our group (of 9) was too big for the table (which was perhaps a tight squeeze, but sufficiently large), that it was against policy to split the party into two (despite the bar being nearly empty). staff constantly hovering around us. just a bizarre preoccupation with their clientele.

all of this while we endured overly studied pours of bourbon, precisely measured (waiter would stoop down so he could view the level of liquid in the glass at eye level)... slow service and assured comments like, "it is worth the wait". Felt like saying "I'm not looking for a ridiculously special vodka soda here - save the pomp and circumstance because it's annoying"

by way of context, was with a group of ivy league professionals, well dressed, well behaved and, with the possible exception of myself, very sophisticated...

I live in Tribeca and have been coming to Brandy Library since it opened. I came last night to show friends from Israel, and was appalled by the service I received. I ordered a $11 drink for myself and a $13 drink for my friend's wife. For my friend, I asked for something similar to Jameson, a $9 drink. When the bill came, I found out the waiter brought a $32 replacement for Jameson. If I wanted a $32 drink I would not have asked for something like Jameson. From my understanding, it seemed that the waiter did this to artifically inflate the price of my bill to increase his own tip. I then had to argue with the waiter in front of my friends, something I would never imagine doing. I am disgusted by how I was treated, I will NEVER come back to Brandy Library, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Let me preface my review by saying that I usually like quiet restaurants and bars and was very much looking forward to having a cocktail at the Brandy Library earlier this month.
I tip-toed in the bar around 11:00pm to see if it might be a nice place to catch up with a few friends who were standing outside. I walked in alone, wearing a simple cocktail dress, but was advised that since ??I had been drinking before? the host refused to let me past the foyer of the half-empty bar. Perhaps it was the fact that I had exchanged the heels I was wearing earlier for more simple flats, or maybe he heard people laughing outside??who knows? I stand guilty as charged for having consumed precisely two glasses of wine over the course of a 3 hour dinner previously. I was sober, polite, articulate, and frankly surprised by the accusation.

I??m a 35 year old board certified tax attorney and would never have achieved any degree of professional success were I not somewhat poised, polished, and professional. A friend of mine who actually made it inside one evening later told me that she was scolded for clapping and repeatedly ??hushed? in the bar during her one (and only) visit.

The drink selection is extensive, maybe a bit excessive even. I tried about 5 different cocktails, neither of which were good. I was hoping that at least the mojito would be good but all I could taste was some gin and lots of lime juice. I think for 13 dollars I should expect nothing less but delicious.
The waitress was rather rude; he became a bit snappy when I told him that I ordered a Mojito and not an Armanito. I believe he actually went to the back bar and remade my drink himself?which seems a bit odd. Maybe that would explain the odd taste. Additionally, the waiter was very annoyed because we wanted to close a half of the bill earlier and the other half later on when the rest of the crew departed.

Great place for a cozy Saturday night drink. We did not experience the service problems others noted. Wonderful selection of scotches. I would recommend skipping the flight, though, because at $40, you get only 6 0.5 oz samples. With some small plates of food (excellent) and a few scotches, you can get to $150 pretty quickly.

Brandy Library has a great selection of drinks .it was absolutely a great place but the staff getting more pretentious everyday made this place unbearable. There is nothing good about this place beside wide selection of whiskey and cognacs. I'm not planing on visiting this place again for a long time.

If I could have given this bar zero stars that would have painted a more accurate picture.
If you want to spend a lot of money on overpriced drinks and be treated abysmally, please go and meet the manager of Brandy Library. Quite frankly, seeing him in action is a lesson on the antithesis of good behavior and how to be a good manager. He doesn't like people, so how he landed a job in a service industry is actually mindblowingly outstanding. The staff looked unhappy and frightened. Where is the owner? I am the daughter of a club owner, bars and I feel I would be doing you a disservice by not informing you of the abusive behavior of your staff. It seems that other people have informed you too in these reviews. Sir, do yourself a favor and read the reviews of your customers! I think some of your patrons may have had a good time on the days that this manager had a night off! Are you in Burgandy? a place where I have many friends and I know that people from this region are warm and very hospitable, so why on earth would you have this man representing your business? I would recommend this place to a class of students studying management as a great example on what not to do. Everyone else please don't waste your money, there are lovely people and places in NY who will appreciate your business. Trust me on this one.

My friends and I arranged to meet up in Brandy Library. It was a warm and inviting especially on a wintery evening and I was initially pleased with my friend's choice of venue.

There were 4 of us, all professional women, well-travelled and well-mannered. We enjoyed ourselves, catching up on news, drinking red wine and nibbling on appetizers. The service seemed polite at that stage.

I ordered another bottle of wine and did not get it. Instead we were given a plate of cookies and meringues.; ones that are often served with coffee at the end of a meal. It was odd but we did not question it.

When I asked for the wine again, the server told me that we could have it, but we would have to "tone things down." I was shocked and asked him if anyone had complained about us, to which he responded "no." We were not loud and obnoxious, we were merely enjoying ourselves and perhaps one of our friends laughed slightly loudly once. The room was not busy and the few customers who were there seemed engaged with their group. Nobody was disturbed by us at all. The cookies were a gesture for us to leave! Outrageous!

I told my friend M, who is a sales exec with a high-end fashion brand, what I was told. She became upset and asked for the manager. He came, she talked to him politely and asked for an apology. He refused and instead asked us to leave. We were horrified! None of us have ever been asked to leave any type of establishment before!

Now we were upset and expressed our outrage. The manager then threatened to call the police! The scenario was becoming ridiculous and laughable. So we paid the bill of $381.28 for wine and appetizers and deliberately did not tip. We left and went elsewhere to end the evening on a happier note.

Brandy Library has the potential to be a lovely spot for a drink but the staff are disgustingly rude, socially inept and strange. This venue will not last.

Just had worse experience ever, that started with their cold rude hostess, then with their manager Dominick. While the place was half empty, their seated us in least comfortable place in front of the entrance door and refused to accomodate our request for a different table in the most disrespectful offensive way ( there were plenty of tables as we could observed). It was executed in poor English and was especially shameful ugly scene in front of my friends from west cost - something to remember as a "true new york nigh out experience". The way these people deal with their customers is just awful: no smiles, no sorry, no politeness , nothing that could be possibly interpreted they want your business - completely opposite! - they did virtually everything to UNPLEASE you, so you will never go back. Shame!!! Nicely designed place but such RUDE service!

After intending to visit the Brandy Library for nearly a year I finally treated myself to a Saturday night there. I arrived without a reservation around 11:30 PM and the host was happy to inform me I could have a seat at the bar. When I sat down I was handed a booklet containing the amazing selection of spirits served therein. The booklet itself was fascinating; broken into separate tabbed sections for whiskeys, rums, wine etc. and a glossary at the back with definitions of alcohol-related terms such as "cask strength and "single malt". When my friend arrived we both ordered a rare Scotch and were delighted to have the extremely knowledgeable bartender, Jason, break down the history of the spirit from the process of how it's made to the town it comes from and how and when it's bottled. He did this for every drink we ordered and made excellent recommendations based on what we liked. Needless to say we ended up sampling some amazing rare Scotch and also learned a lot too. Cheers.

I recently had the worst experience at Brandy Library, and although I have been several times in the past, I will never go back. I booked a table for a birthday party sat. night for 7 people, and was promised a table downstairs, and was told the bar would be accomodating with regards to how many people showed up. When we arrived, they instead seated us upstairs at a table that barely fit 4 people, saying that they had booked a private party downstairs. We never received any call from them informing us of this change. When our friends started showing up, we turned out to have a party of 9, since some people had brought friends, unexpectedly. We were immediately told that we had "exceeded our numbers" and that this was a problem. The manager was extremely rude and unaccomodating and basically asked our party to leave. I have never experienced such nasty and unacommodating behavior at any bar in NYC. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I've been going to the Brandy library many times and did like the place. This time I made a reservation for 6 people on a Saturday 7/12/08 to take my co-workers out after work. We came a little early and the person at the door informed us in a rude way that their was no room for us. He also mentioned that one of our co-workers, who is African American could not be admitted because he was wearing a tank top (a nice one in the middle of the summer). Now there was never a dress code before when we came but I guess that now that the place picked up customers, they can be picky.

Well I will never go back. I work near by in another restaurant and did always refer our customers to the Brandy Library. I will stop doing so. The rudeness that we experienced tonight is so typical for places like that. We were good customers as long as the place needed us, now they can pick and choose. Shame on you!!!

Brandy Library is wonderful. I went there with a couple of friends on a Wednesday night. The waitress was very nice and incredibly helpful. I ended up getting the single malt scotch tasting menu, and she was great about explaining all of the selections to me. This is a great place to go if you love whiskey or are just trying to learn more about it. Beyond that, it's a very elegant space and is basically the perfect place to get drinks after work. I've heard that the scene can be more intense on Friday and Saturdays, but I'm curious to find out.

...been here 3 times in the past month alone. It's one of the few places I wish would change their door policy, i.e. allow locals only, hand out private keys, make the phone number private, or a combination thereof. Never a disappointment. I think others who've given the one-star rating are just trying to keep people away (understandable...i almost did).

I've been to the "Library" twice. Once with a group of my college students and once with some family and friends. Both times, the service, drinks and food have been impeccable and everyone left suitable impressed; the young people, in particular, had never been to a place like that and said it felt like an old movie setting.

I can not praise the friendliness and outstanding service enough. Last time I called, I asked for seating by the fireplace. Unfortunately they told me that someone had reserved that area for that time. However, when we showed up that party had just left and as soon as I gave my name the host informed me that the seating had been held for my group and was ready for us.

The hosts are always willing to share their knowledge and will recommend just the right drink for anyone overwhelmed by the selection available. For those who are more knowledgeable, they can provide a more elaborate reviews of the various scotch, brandies and cognacs. End the evening with a great dessert and some port and you'll always leave happy, if lighter in wallet.

Not a place to go every night or even every week but once in a while it's worth it.

Pros: Service, selection, ambiance

Cons: Can't go often unless you have ddep pockets

.

This is a well designed place with a very nice staff. Ethan is a top notch sommelier and a friendly host. His hard work to make this place classy and pleasant, was blown away by one thoughtless act of his "manager". I hope he gets to work for somebody that's not an a-shole like this "Dominic" (real name most likely Sajjad or Rizwi). The manager "Dominic" who, btw in our experience at least , showed that he lacks both manners and common sense, asked the group of my friends (bankers, lawyers, journalists) from London, Moscow and New York, to pay $500 to BE SERVED. The bartender was ordered not to serve any drinks to thesepeople. Then they kicked us out. That's definitely a good PR. I mean, it is not about the drinks, interior decoration, or even overinflated price. It is about experience you have. This "Dominic" apparently skipped some basic training they teach at Starbucks or McDonalds - and it shows now at Brandy Library.

As a much better alternative, I recommend the more classy, nearby Bubble Lounge (228 W Broadway) or friendly, neat and FAR less expensive Tribeca Tavern at 247 W Broadway.

Pros: Ethan, great host -- if he quits I would go to his new place any time

Cons: Overpriced, rude manager, pretentious - they can't figure out their identity

After hearing good reviews and it being a block from home, we entered into this well appointed room. Place was a quarter full but after the no reservations lecture were ushered to a corner of the bar, barman was rude and quite peturbed when we ordered tap water, then we ordered a champagne... $18 for Piper ?? are they kidding then wait for it $68 for a miniscule serve of Johny walker Blue, thats is over a grand a bottle???? Appetisers were terrible. Fortunately we moved on, A pity that a good concept and beautiful room lets itself down with poor service and blatant overcharging

We stopped here recently with a decent sized group (not too big). While there were hardly anyone in the bar, we were asked to leave because we were being "too loud." We were hardly too loud and it was a Saturday night! I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

It's too bad the staff is so rude and obnoxious because it is actually a pretty nice place. So overall, best to avoid.

Probably the friendliest staff I've ever encountered in quite awhile in this city full of cookie cutter bars/lounges. The decor is like something out of a Cary Grant movie, and the cocktails are original and to-die-for! Very low key, with some really great Jazz music in the background. The waitress heard someone in my group mention that it was my birthday, so they even took it upon themselves (no nudging from anyone with me) to bring out a small cake and sang "Happy Birthday" to me!

This place really makes you feel at home, and I can assure you that I will definitely be going here again!

As an added note, this place would definitely be a great place to impress a date!

My fiancee and I went to the Brandy Library on a Tuesday evening around 7 PM. We were greeted immediately and given our choice of seating. There were a few other couples and groups, but the noise level was very low, and the background music was a pleasant jazz track. Our waitress came over promptly, and we ordered drinks, and the cheese and charcuterie plates. Our drinks were brought fairly quickly, and we also received a complimentary snack from the chef before our food came out.

The food took a bit longer than I would have expected for two plates that didn't require any cooking, but we were having such a pleasant time that it didn't matter. They brought a bread basket with the food, and as soon as we removed the last piece of bread, there was another basket waiting. The food and drinks were delicious; the service was friendly and attentive; and the overall ambience was exactly what we were looking for (quiet, unique, elegant).

If you're looking for a nice place to sit and talk with your date this is it. The ambience is great. The cocktail list is fabulous and never ending, and Ethan (the bartender) is always a pleasure. Once the fall and winter rolls around there's no place better to sit and sip a hot toddy or warm cider. Cheers Keep it up

Brandy Library is a Gem. With so many cookie cutter bars out there, Brandy Library is a RARE find! I live in Tribeca and I have NEVER had a bad experience here. The staff is friendly and Amy is the best bartender. The drinks are good and the food is excellent as well. This is a great date place and I highly recommend it.

Intersting atomsphere when busy, strange when the bar is empty. Not worth dealing with the snobby and pertentious GM and sommelier. Overpriced drinks and food, they often refuse to honor their reservations.

A great place to impress business clients or a date who's into spirits. Try some of the original cocktails, but don't hesitate to order a classic. Despite the fact the place first feels like a stuffy library of old cognacs and scotches, the staff is super friendly and you melt into the warm glow of the lighting and seating after a few drinks.

the server was fantastic as she changed my water glass numerous times and was friendly but not imposing. all the servers have good knowledge of the variety of brandies and make good cocktail recommendations. the atmosphere was cozy and relaxed. a great place to meet up with co-workers or friends for a relaxing drink. the drink menu was fantastic and the brandy selection was comprehensive. live jazz piano on mondays. it would be good if the owner developed another similar library on other drinks such as sake...

The person who wrote the previous review must not have been to the same Brandy Library I went for a friend's birthday. Their inventory and cocktails alone are enough to set it apart from the "flavored vodka" bars but it was the service that made a difference.
We made a reservation for four but needed to expand it and they were able to help us even as the party kept growing. The managers were very polite and helpfull and when they couln't fit any more chairs (we were ten by then and the bar was modestly crowded) the lady who introduced herself as the GM informed us so in the most civilized of manners.
The tab ran a little higher than it would in other bars but nobody minded, it was worth every penny.

Bartenders are great, drinks are cool and its just around the corner from my house...

Unfortunatley the management is a little too snobby and rude for Brandy to be the local... its a good thing we have a few old haunts and a couple of new comers in the neighborhood.

Not only do they have a variety of spirits to put all other bars to shame, their cocktail list is several pages long and the bartenders seem to actually know what they are doing (no flavored vodka here).
It is mostly crowded on weekends and it can be hard to get in but on weeknights the door is hassle-free. The crowd is very cool and the staff is friendly and helpfull. Extra points for the details, such as the amber-lit copper distiller that matches the jewelry worn by the waitresses and the cuff-links with the brandy snifter that is the bar's logo, worn by the waiters.

What a delightful experience I have each time I enter this elegant-hidden-golden-succulent-spot!!!
The cocktail list is absolutely the best. They even have a chef that will concoct you some flamboyant dishes that will make you lick your fingers.
And for the Brandy, Calvados, Armaniacs, Scotch or any other elixir lovers, they have it. They know it. And theyll pour it without the attitude.
Friendly staff in a discreet spot with a warm ambiance that makes you want to stay and relax. What else can you ask for?
