A bunch of us split appetizers while we had a few cocktails before we went out. For food I'd suggest the mussels and gnocchi. For drinks I'd go with a Manhattan, but The bartenders here are pretty on point so you could ask them to make you

went for dinner and drinks with friends. i wasn't drinking, but everyone else liked their drinks. my fiance and i both ordered the seared prime rib. hers was ridiculously fatty...to the point where she couldn't get to the steak. it was unappetizing to say the least. she sent it back with the waitress, who first tried to "teach" us that it's a fatty cut of meat. granted-but mine wasn't nearly as fatty. she took it to the chef who offered to carve it...my fiance declined stating she had lost her appetite. a fifteen minute conversation/argument ensued with the waitress pressing us to take the carved steak. after we ultimately declined and returned to our edible dinners and drinks another staff member brought us the carved steak in a to go bag stating they just didn't want it to go to waste. annoying as this was, it would have been somewhat appropriate if it was an apologetic measure. turns out they just wanted to justify CHARGING us for the steak. when we protested yet again, the chef stormed to the table, snatched the bag and exclaimed "I'll eat it!" Finally we got the manager to remove the charge...and exited with another argument with the waitress. 100% unacceptable...and stupid when you consider we were spending $500 and the steak was $39.

This weekend I threw my friend a bachelorette party and we decided to have dinner at Employees Only. I was allowed to decorate the table (with inappropriately shaped confetti, natch) and the servers kept coming up to the table and admiring the gifts. They seemed as excited about the party as we were! They were kind and accommodating throughout the meal. Speaking of the meal, it was delicious, and complemented well by the yummy cocktails. They were a bit pricy, I'm not going to lie, and we all ended up spending more than we wanted to, but I think it was worth it for the special time we had.

I almost forgot, they have a psychic who does palm and tarot readings... she was so, so, but it was a fun treat anyway. Great spot for bachelorette parties!

This bar sells itself as an after work hangout, but acts like some pretentious meatpacker club. The door staff is incredibly rude, and the service inside is positively wretched. If you want good drinks but not to be treated horridly, go to one of the many other top notch bars in the area.

That photo above shows the ENTIRE bar. It is VERY small and extremely crowded. Crowded full of pretentious d-bags. And it's overpriced. Don't waste your time if you actually want to enjoy your evening.

Cons: Horrible crowd, overpriced drinks, rude service, crowded, everything else

Not impressed, rude bouncer and if you are a bit drunk then you'll get charged for somethings that you didn't even ordered, hopping you are too drunk to realize. I've been to this place many times at the beginning when they were more down to earth and it was nice back then, but now the different is colossal. I don't appreciate my friend being mistreated, even when I am the one expending over $1000 in drinks. I don't care about money as long as the service food, and drink are in accordance with what I am spending. Don't be impressed by their stars since they got then back when they were good, back in 2007, but if you check now how many stars they've gotten in 2008, you'll see the difference.

I went for a friends birthday here a couple of weeks ago...the host, wait staff, bartenders and door men could not have been more friendly! After having one of the best drinks I have ever had, we sat down for dinner which was nothing short of perfect! The service was fantastic, the atmosphere had a great vibe and everything was just wonderful! I highly recommend this place, they certainly deserve 5 stars, everything was so great...I will be back again soon!!!! I recommend the mushroom nocchi for an app, the organic chicken was to die for as an entree and do not skip dessert...the chocolate cheescake is completely sinful! Can't wiat to get back there...only negative was the tarot card reader was awful, but atleast she was friendly!

Had my birthday here and they treated me and my guests perfectly.
Even though half of my party arrived late they still let all of us order from the brunch menu.
The drinks are extremely tasty and different.
And the atmosphere is perfect!!! Love their fire place and the little back area that they have, its great. Oh and the food was cooked to perfection we left there full and feeling good.
Oh and I had my cards read to me by the fortune teller they have by the door, she was great too bad I forgot her name!!!

I've lived in the neighborhood for four years and Employees Only has turned from a fun, no-attitude place with good drinks to a snobfest hang-out for power-tripping bouncers.

ALTERNATIVES to Employees Only (walking distance)...

- White Horse Tavern (Hudson and 11st St) - fun no frills bar with good beers on tap, nice bouncers, and great table service. There's outside seating as well.

- The Other Room (Perry and Washington St) - wine and beer only. Really good, reasonably priced wine. Awesome knowledgable bartenders, cool atmosphere, cozy and cute.

- Art bar (8th Ave at Jane St) - really cool atmosphere with cushions, lush couches, and pillows. great service, nice people

Went there on Friday at 9:30p. It was early, so the place was pretty empty. After ordering a drink with friends, more friends called me and were lost, so I went outside to meet them. They were standing right in front of the entrance. Upon turning around...

Bouncer: "You can't go inside"
Me: "I was just inside, my friends and drink are still there".
Bouncer: "So you want to go back in there with MORE people? I don't think so. You have to wait 45 minutes"

What a power trip! The place was not crowded, I had two people with me and a drink inside. He refused to let us in so I had to call my friends inside and tell them we were outside. We happily left to go to the White Horse (down the street) where their was no attitude, better service, and good beer on tap. I will never go back to Employees Only again. It's so sad, it used to be really nice and fun.

The ONLY appeal of this place are the employees. Melo (?) I think his name was! I went there with friends last Thursday night and it was pretty dissappointing. Honestly this wasn't my first time in the place and it has gotten progressively worse everytime. I am all about having a good time and getting a few cocktails, but too many people in a tight space calls for a bunch of annoyance. Someone was so wasted they dropped a drink right next to my girlfriend and she was showered with vodka and shards of glass. Then I was almosted knocked down by a really drunk couple making out and getting it on only to bump into the next very drunk couple making out and was unable reach the bar. I like the bartenders, but it is also hard to get a drink here unless you are a "regular" so my friends and I had to wait a long while in between drinks. In short-- too crowded, clientele is way too wasted, will wait too long for drinks, will see drunks makeout and not be able to get to the bar.

I went here on a Friday night with a group of friends. The space was ok, nothing too fabulous.... and it was way too crowded. The bouncer was a total d**k and asked us not to come back just because he didn't like some of our other friends that he wouldn't let in. That is fine with me since this was my first and last time in this horrible place.

As it's known for, they make really great cocktails here. Had dinner there on Saturday night, and the food was delicious too - I had salmon and my friend had the chicken - both were really well made. This place is really a zoo on the weekends, so I wouldn't recommend stopping by for a drink unless you can handle wall-to-wall people. I'm sticking to less crowded times - the drinks are so good, you don't want to be annoyed by getting bumped into and pushed every 30 seconds.

been going to this spot since inception - every couple of months and it never disappoints. glad to see that chris is keeping out persons such as this fella jose and his buddy milosh. no need to bash the bouncer for his ability to recognize lack of class.

Great service when you can get in. If you go on Sunday or Monday its the best around. If you go on Friday the doormen act as if yr a hobo asking for a quarter rather than a customer. The Sunday/Monday doorman is the nicest gentleman i've ever encountered. the other two almost punched me in the face for just asking to go inside. Fine, I'll go to Diablo and tip them 50 bucks while being treated like a human. Great drinks, fantastic music and dope bartenders but i'll never go back later in the week due to the fact that the doormen must have some unmet sexual desire that they work out by shoving "customers" and grabbing women. Hey bartenders!!! These guys are costing you 500 bucks a month in tips. SAD INDEED!!!

I love Employees Only. It is dark without being snobby, with the most interesting crowd. The cocktails are second to none and always delicious. They have a back patio where you can sit and eat, and the steak tartare is the best in Manhattan. It's wonderful.

The food drink and service is above average The sauteed oysters are to die for the matahari is the stuff of dreams. I've actually had almost everything on the menu from apps to deserts and let me tell you as a native New yorker this place has raised the bar(no pun intended) Depending on the night it can be overly crowded at the bar especially thus-sat (get a table in the back if you want to be romantic) and it might be hard to get in but that's because there's nowhere left to stand and believe me the doorman is doing you a service by telling to try back later! If it's that packed then it must be that good! There are plenty of other bars in that neighborhood so do the math! Please don't go there and just order a beer the drinks are delicious even to the most discerning- I brought my mother there (before 7 on a weekday) and she has not stopped talking about it since. It's so classy and adult and not as expensive as most places like that in this city. And the bartenders always make you fell special. The crowd can be a bit pretentious but hey it's downtown NY if your looking for a dive go to hells kitchen!(where I'm from)

this is a place for true cocktail lovers... fresh ingredients, highly skilled rock star bartenders, super creative cocktail recipes. go during the week, and go especially during the later hours--the crowd is a little more manageable, cooler and the kitchen still serves tasty tidbits (love the cheese plate, the steak tartar & chicken sandwich) to encourage cocktail experimentation. the garden is nice on warmer days... and you get a nice hot bowl of chicken soup around 4am last call to help you recover.

EO has become more popular over the past year or so and the weekends have become somewhat of a zoo. This is a fantastic place to meet friends for a drink (some of the coolest bartenders in town and they have pretty interesting moustaches) or have brunch/dinner (great menu). I would recommend going during the week to avoid the mess and the doorman, who is probably the only downfall of the place. Surprisingly, management has not realized what he does or says to customers entering the restaurant. Frankly, he is a very mean spirited person and on several occasions has grabbed a few girls. Other than that, this place is pretty legit but you have been warned about the doorman.

I've been going to EO for a couple of years for cocktails. Their bartenders are true artists and make the best Negroni downtown. I finally tried the food recently and was very pleasantly surprised. Everything was excellent and the cheeses and charcouterie were of the highest quality and selection. Although it gets annoyingly crowded on the weekends, it is perfect on a weeknight for a civilized cocktail, old jazz and a lovely bite to eat.

A member of my party somehow convinced the bouncer to let us in--I think substantial gratuity was involved. The bouncer was a bit scary, but no different from a typical New York bar. The bar was definitely crowded to be enjoyable. The drinks were ok, but they were small. Perhaps due to the crowds, the bartenders could not focus as attentively on the art of creating their drink. I wasn't impressed the first and only time that I was there, but given the reviews, I will give Employees Only another try during a time during the weekday when it's not so "popular" in order to actually enjoy a drink. Are they open during happy hour, I wonder?

If you can get in Milk and Honey, maybe this place is too pedestrian for you. But, if you're the rest of us, this is arguably the best cocktail joint in NYC. Fresh ingredients, creative drinks, attentive service and enthusiastic mixologists make this a great place to knock a few back. Leave the "simple" vodka-tonics and red wine nights for a different place, and order one of their creations, like the Manhattan Cocktail. Then sit back and watch the bartender work his magic.

Great bar, great crowd. Very good looking overall, and literally the best espresso martini I've ever had. Does get pretty crowded, however, since the bar space is relatively small.

Pros: drinks

Cons: crowded

Drinks are so-so. Crowd is so-so. Decor is so-so. Only thing that sets it apart is the fact that it's hidden, so you can feel cool showing off to your friends that you know about it. Other than that, though, there's no reason to go here.

If you appreciate a well made drink -this is the place to go. Not only are the drinks incredible (I recommend the Ginger Smash), but watching the bartenders make them is a show in itself. Fresh ingredients and happy bartenders are a good combination and they have it here. The food and decor are both yummy and cozy. Nice place to spend time with an old friend -and meet a few new ones. Oh, did I mention that I left my jacket there one night with my keys and IPOD in the pockets and they had it for me the next day with all the fixings inside. Now, that is New York story you don't often hear.

My girlfriends and I went for drinks around 11pm on Friday night - the guy at the door was an a@@hole, told us to wait, we waited & waited & waited.... so we left. Around 1am, we decided to drop in, give it another try - the same guy told us to come back in an HOUR!!!! I told him I would NEVER be back. Classic example of a good neighborhood bar/lounge that grew an ego & forgot who they are. Sad.

Place was amazing and I can't tell enough people they need to go here. After numerous bad experiences dinning out, went here on a recommendation. Drink list was amazing and although not cheap exotic and delicious. Got a beautiful booth perfect to survey the costumed hostesses and wait staff. Most importantly though the food was to die for. Some courses like the salted fish are presented to the table before searing. The pile of salt heaped on the filet practically turned my girlfriend into a ravenous beast; chops watering. The taste was light and perfectly done. I ordered the cheddar crusted chop. Also highly recommended. Two rounds of drinks later and in complete food coma bliss we went for desert. Which held up to the rest with exotic flavored sorbet and a flourless chocolate cake that can't be missed. Only thing disappointing was the fortune teller in front, to busy speaking with a friend, cards haphazardly dealt out in an attempt to appear at work, that we couldn't have our fortunes read. Cheap parlor tricks aside, you must try employees only. So good.

A sophisticated and stylish place with amazing drinks and great food. I agree that this is a great place to bring and impress out-of-town guests. Smaller and more low-key than I expected, with a quaint garden and mellow dining area. Perfect for a date, and good for a small group. Art deco decor with quirky, time-warp staff. About $25 entrees, $12 drinks, good wine for $35/bottle. Feels like you're a member of private club.

This bar is just classic. Decor is well done. Drinks well done. Service well done. And the bartenders add a GREAT touch. I think the magic is that nothing here is over done yet everything has a nice touch to it. If you're not sure just ask the fortune teller seated at the front door! But a warning - dont come here looking for cheap drinks. Come here if you want the price you pay to be worth a full bar experience.

It is refreshing to go to a bar that puts so much care and attention into its drinks. Everything is classy and classic. Can't say enough good things about the place. Please don't forget about dinner. The food is excellent, too!

Thanks to Igor and the waitstaff at E.O. for making a friend's birthday a special event. Having never been there before I was leery that this would be a pretentious environment but I was glad to find I was wrong. The drinks were delicious, the food impressive and best of all the service was impeccable. Our waitress was as friendly as she was beautiful (and that's saying a lot because she was stunning)! The Maitre D, Igor, was very attentive and went so far as to start us off with a champagne toast for our celebration. We are all looking forward to a return trip!

If you want to impress your uptown or out-of-towner guests ... definately take them here. Hidden behind a forturne teller's front awaits a throw-back to the roaring 20's complete with mustachioed owners in zoot suits, a roaring fire (the smell of the fireplace alone will transport you to another world), and friendly service. The place is a TRIP back in time ... amazing bar ... like a speakeasy gentlemen's club ... very sexy. Everyone from the owners to the busboys were friendly, attentive and nice - a rarity in NYC!!

Employees Only is my new favorite place for cocktails in the city. The atmosphere is enchanting and the drinks are TO DIE FOR!! All of them. And watching them being made is half the fun. The staff is very friendly and extremely accomdating. No attitude. There's a great table for two in the window that's super romantic...

this place used to be way better- i went there tonight for the first time in about a year, and everything has gone downhill- the service, the crowd, and the food. the only thing that has stayed awesome are the highly caloric, but very yummy drinks. dont think ill be going back.

If you want expensive overly fancy drinks and a crowd of pretentious downtowners this is the place for you. While the atmosphere looked appealing the place was wall-to-wall with trendy thirty-somethings (or trying to be) who though quite highly of themselves. It certainly wasn't easy to get a drink (we didn't try any of their specialties) and left soon after finishing it. If you want to socialize with friends and talk over a drink this is not the place for you.

I love this place. Great ambience, nice crowd. But if you're eating, stay with the salad and charcuterie. Oysters were salty. The once great steak tartar is now very average (watch out when the maitre d' makes it at your table - he gestured and some raw steak hit my date's hair). Inattentive waitress but the busboys rock.
Slipping downward I think from once great heights. Pity.

We went to this bar for the first time last week, and I can't stop going back! The staff and owners are so friendly, the crowd is great and I love that there is so much seating in the back. For fun, we got our cards read with the 'psychic' in the front and wow- was she dead on. I am so excited to have found this place and can't wait to go back..

Beautiful bar, great vibe, lighting and service. They take pride in their complex cocktails which are amazing. The bartender/owner was generous in offering a sample I inquired about (place was packed and he took the time to do this). We figured the food would be ok emphasis being on drinks. We were wrong. The meze/meat samplers where refined and full of choices. The Chicken Liver mousse is one of the best in the city. My Salted Bronzini was perfect. (Nice touch to present the fish to the table before filleting it). Another nice touch was the floor mgr/owner preparing the steak tar-tar table side. The scallops were fantastic as well the Monkfish. I was impressed by the hands on attn the owners displayed. Our waitress was also super cool and right there whenever we needed her. Nice going guys!

the bar is a rare find -- music that really fits the mood of the place, with bartenders that really know how to mix a proper drink. we ate out back, and the food was lovely (we had the halibut - done beautifully, and the lamb - VERY tender, almost no fat).

a comment on the service: after the glasses arrived for the bottle of wine we ordered, i noticed there was something on the inside of mine. i didn't even have the opportunity to mention it to anyone because not a minute later, one of the proprietors (who watches quietly and carefully from the doorway to all going on with the diners) slipped over and replaced the glass without a word. i can only assume it was after seeing me inspecting it. that story really sums up the service here. go... you'll enjoy it...

What else is there to say? If you're spending the money they're charging, the drink better be strong.

Staff is retro hip, very friendly & not pretentious but service was painfully slow. Halibut was amazing, 24oz steak was gigantic, steak tartar ruled and everthing was very fairly price. BUT chacuterrie platter & Peanut butter chocolate cake were near unedible. Cocktails were okay but didn't get to try their signature ginger muddy. Bar is extremely crowded & small indoor dinning area was way too tiny & cramped. Outdoor dinning seems more spacious. Btw, creepy fortune telling booth was not a turn on but it was very popular w/ the gals!
