Reviews for Scott J. Salon

Ratings_icons great job!

lovelynyc179 k.

i had been a loyal client to a salon in Brooklyn for 7 yrs but my stylist moved and i was very wary of finding someone new to cut my hair but a friend of mine suggested the Scott j salon on 72 st and i decided to give it a go. the salon is beautiful and not only was my cut fantastic, the staff was pretty friendly (offered drinks) and my stylist Gwendolyn was very knowledgeable and offered me styling options for home. they even offer free makeup touchups and hand massages!!! whoa!!! :) very cheap prices!!!! I'm bringing my daughter next time!!!

PROS:cheap prices
CONS:noisy

Ratings_icons Downhill since Ryan and Mark left!

Tracey S.

I have tried 3 stylists now and all a dissapointment. This last one was horrible and I asked for a senior sylist! I also got color which was terrible too, came out orange and two toned. This one is so bad I have to go to someone local to get it fixed and for 150 that is ridiculous that I am so unhappy with it. I tried I really tried but that was it I am done w/Scott J!

Ratings_icons I've been coming here for years!

HP Q. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,659

I love Scott J and the whole ambiance. I've been coming here to get my hair cut for at least 5 years and I enjoy my experiences every time. Carol does a wonderful time, but there are many talented stylists who will make sure that you leave looking fabulous. The decor is modern and simple but neat and tidy. They are an Aveda salon with lots of products for sale, but they aren't pushy about their products. I would highly recommend Scott J. Caution, they recently do not accept American Express.

Ratings_icons Misty Rocks!!

Meghna C.

Misty Miller at this Scott J is a hair artist, as far as I'm concerned. She took my lack-luster, limp hair and completely transformed it. I got compliments every day for about a week!

The salon itself is a decent experience. I say "decent" because I had to ask for a glass of water three times before I actually got one! It's an Aveda salon, so they use Aveda products, which really does make for a lovely experience. The people there are quite friendly and chatty. Beware, though - they don't take Discover and American Express.

PROS: Misty's talent, the wine, the yummy products
CONS: Certain members of staff can be a wee bit inattentive at times

this place is alright, there arent many options for hair salons in this area, so i have gone there a few times with mixed results. they have many different levels of hairstylists, and they range from really great, pretty bad which means that ive gotten some great haircuts and some not so great ones. if you go, ask for a senior stylist, but beware, that it can get pricey (up to $75 with tip), and as a student, that is a lot of money for a haircut. they do give a student discount, but its not huge and not a very big help. also be prepared to wait for a bit, they always run late.

Ratings_icons Okay salon near Columbia U, but there aren't many choices

kimberly B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,433

This review is based on the Broadway location.

Scott J is conveniently located on Broadway near Columbia University, right next to Starbucks (upstairs). It pretty much has the monopoly on Columbia students, as there aren't many similar salons nearby. As a matter of convenience, I started going to Scott J when we moved to the neighborhood. Convenience is probably the only thing that has caused me to go back. It's a so-so salon with average stylists. Every stylist has an assistant who washes the hair, etc. (read: more than one person to tip). I've never had a bad haircut / color there, but I've not had a fabulous one either. The atmosphere is not very spa-like. It's pretty run-of-the-mill in terms of design. The prices, however, are more in line with a spa. A women's haircut is no less than $50 (there is a 10% student discount), and highlights will run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 or more). They do fantastic blowdrys, and offer free makeup "touch-up" when you get a cut, color, etc. If you aren't looking for perfect hair, then this place is adequate. However, I'd expect a little bit more out of a NYC salon.

PROS: Location, Variety of Services
CONS: Cleanliness, nothing special about it, prices

Ratings_icons loyal customer of Scott J for over 3 yrs

nab32578

I have been coming to Scott J on Columbus Ave for 4 yrs and will continue to as long as i live in nyc! i am truly disturbed by all the negative reviews that are written on here and find them to hard to believe. I had my hair colored by a few different stylists in the beginning but jennifer has been doing my hair for the past for the past 3 yrs---and she is the only one who will ever do my hair for the rest of my life. The color job she does on my hair is out of this world--every single time i am walking home from getting my hair colored by jennifer, i have at least 3 people stop me to comment on my hairu---i send them directly to her. Aside from the best colorist in the world, the people are so nice there. the boys are always coming over and giving me hand massages and checking on me. I go to this salon every 5-6 weeks and only have positive experiences. There was one time that i got there and saw some people talking without coming to check on me-- i didnt say anything taht night but i did call the manager and explain the situation. I have never had that happen again. If you want a top notch aveda hair salon with insanely great prices...check out scxott j--it is the best in my opinion

Pros: Genius colorists and stylists--beautiful salon--aveda

Cons: occasionally busy

Ratings_icons worst salon EVER!!!!

stnycgirl09

AVOID THIS SALON!!!! ok first of all i walk in and its a mad house and no one acknowledges me...im standing around for what feels like forever until finally someone asks me if i need to check in.... my "senior stylist" had the biggest ego and the worst attitude and not only did they not listen to what i wanted and give me the worst haircut of my life they tell me "thats what i asked for" i couldnt believe it! i dont know whats worse...being ignored or having to hear 19 yr old shampoo girls complain about how their TIPS are being STOLEN by the front desk people.... i'm never going back!!!! its so not worth the money....DONT GO HERE!!!!

Pros: aveda products?

Cons: lack of proffessionalism to say the least

You get better customer service downtown in tribeca and soho. Me and 4 other girls used to do our hair there, cut color,
dry. We now go to the east side, theyre happy to have customers. ButI do go here for massages and they have this warm hot water blanket, amazing, small little room for massages.

Pros: massages

Cons: rude

Ratings_icons Horrific treatment to a loyal customer

bettie34

After using this salon for almost 2 years, I'm extremely disappointed with the service over the last few months. I've made appointments with friends who have all said the same. The stylists have been very rude, and unaccomodating. Today more than ever their treatment was at an ultimate low. This morning they cancelled my appointment with me at 12:45 (received the call around 10). After working my schedule around and agreeing to another time with a stylist I never worked with, she refused to do my highlights because I was late. Staring at over 20 people standing around doing nothing, I ask if there's anyone else who can accomodate me becasue I needed my highlights done before new years, not to mention I came all the way from Queens. No one could, and the stylist named Susan was extremely rude pointing at her watch like she's my mother and embarassing me in front of the 20 people standing around. I will never step my foot in this place again. Although they are affodrable for NYC, I work way too hard to spend my money at a place that treats their clients in this way. Scott J get rid of Susan, no one wants their hair done by a woman with a horrible bob n dye job and is miserable. Also perhaps get rid of the herd of people unable to do anything but sell shampoo standing around the front desk.

Pros: Tricia a very good stylist great at highlights

Cons: Susan very rude, cancellations, unaccomodating, herds of people trying to sell you product, no place to sit when your waiting to be seen, can't schedule appointments correctly

lightdebbie2

i have been to the scott j uptown and have had wonderful experiences, so with the same thinking i could go to their "flagship" location and expect the same was WRONG on my part! Though the salon is beautiful, the front desk staff was too worried about gossip and how they looked to even be concerned with me just standing there! next came my blowout appointment with a stylist named TANYA... who was in her own words "real" ...when in reality was RUDE!!! She not only put me down, rushed my blowout, and tried to push a wall of products on me that she thought i needed, she brushed me off when i nicely declined. NEVER again will i stray from their uptown location, where it might not be as glamorous, but the staff is respectful!

Pros: the salon itself

Cons: Tanya, front desk staff

I have been going to this salon for about 3 years now and I keep changing my hair color. Nikki is great at going with the flow. I feel like I describe what I want, she reads my mind, and it always comes out perfect. One time my dark hair faded and she re did it for free. She doesn't chit chat- sometimes you just wanna read a trashy magazine in peace- but she is still very friendly. I have to say I LOVE my color. The cuts are good- very reasonably priced but not the best I've ever had. Overall, great experience!

Pros: color, free blowouts with service

Cons: a tad pricey for highlights

Ratings_icons Looking for Lindsey at Scott J...

SaritR

Marie wrote about a fantastic coloring experience at Scott J with a stylist named Lindsey. I have to say she gave me a fantastic haircut. She was incredibly patient with me and listened to all of my concerns and then drew out some different pictures of what my cut could look like. She has since left Scott J, and I'm willing to go anywhere in the city to have her cut my hair! If anyone knows where she has gone please post it on this site! Thanks!

Pros: Lindsey was fantastic

Cons: She's not there anymore

Ratings_icons Not a good experience

girldesigner

I went to get my locks dried and styled at the temporary location of Scott J on Vandam Street, and I was really surprised at how mundane and crappy my hair looked afterward. It also feels greasy--less than 24 hrs after a wash--unusual for me.

The service all around was flaky. I was not offered a robe or tea/coffee/water by the assistant, which in my experience is standard for this price range.

The female stylist (a senior-- the only staff available) didn't talk or try to make me feel comfortable, discouraged conversation and seemed apathetic. When I asked her to smooth my hair more on top, she dissed my haircut as a "shag"and seemed perpetually annoyed.

FYI-- The service is much more comfortable at the Aveda School on the other side of the building (@Spring Street) and the same service is only $20 with much more style.

Ratings_icons Best Color, Cut & Style I've Had In A LONG TIME

RMarieMeyer17

For as long as I can remember I had been getting my hair done by the same woman in a salon in the city, she relocated and I was avoiding going to anyone else. A friend of mine who goes to Columbia recommended a salon by her school and told me that there was only one person i should go to. That person was Allie, she was excellent. She made me feel like I had been going there for a long time. I had a few complaints (split ends, dry hair) and she didn't make me feel embarrassed about it she just went straight for the solutions. She dyed my hair pitch black and cut it in these fabulous layers and the ends were perfect. I left the salon feeling beautiful and confident. It was the best way to start my day and my cut was done so well that I haven't had to get my ends cut for a few months. I can't wait to go back, Allie is the best thing that's happened to my hair in a long time. Great talent, great customer service, the best the Upper West Side has got to offer. Go to Allie!

Pros: Allie.

before i tell you about my fabulous experience at Scott J, let me make note of their amazing hours and HOT HOT HOT HOT location!! I think they are the only salon that is open ridiculously late, SEVEN days a week in the most sought-after corner of the Upper West Side, 72nd and Columbus!!!!!! i have had a variety of stylists do my color and cut and i walk out feeling fabulous every time!!! oh...and did i mention the wine they bring you and the complimentary hand massages.....i will never go anywhere else!!!

Pros: location, hours, super stylists!!

Ratings_icons Best COLOR ever!!

nam1125

I absolutely LOVE this salon!! I I have been coming here for over two years and every experience is a great one. From the time you walk in the salon, you receive excellent service. Someone offers to bring you a drink of your choice--wine, water, etc. while you put on your cape and your stylists gets your chair ready. Then you can sit back, relax, and wait to look like a superstar. Jennifer colors my hair and I am extremely fussy about the color--she is PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!! There is no end to the compliments I receive on my red hair!!! I will follow Jennifer to the ends of the earth to get my hair done--but thankfully, she is situated in this fabulous Upper West Side Salon. Oh, and did i mention they have someone come around and give you a hand massage while you are under a dryer or waiting on your color!! Now that is fantastic service!!!!!!

Pros: Expert Stylists and Colorists, AMAZING HOURS, open 7 days a week

Ratings_icons This place is horrible

UESgirl1209

I just had a terrible experience at this salon. I wanted to have my hair colored one shade lighter and in the mean time have it more layered for the summer. However the stylist who did my hair seemed to lack of BASIC traning in coloring and cutting. My hair ended up with same dark color and looked even THICKER. Now i have to go to another salon to get a haircut again. What an experience! Total waste of time and money!

Ratings_icons Best Color I've Ever Had!

Marie72484

I have been coloring my hair for decades at salons all over the City. I finally found someone that I know I'll never leave. Her name is Lindsey at the Scott J on Broadway between 114th and 115th. After listening to all my concerns, (grey hair, brassyness, damaged ends) Lindsey gave me a color that has lots of light and dark tones, but dosn't look stripe-y (think Sarah Jessica Parker) It's not that expenive, either. I would have gladly paid double the price! The only downside-the ambiance in the salon is a little bland.

Pros: Lindsey-seriously the best kept secret in NYC

Cons: they need to update their decor

mcnics

DO NOT GO HERE! I have spent a lot of money here over the years. However, today when I tried to move a prepaid spa appointment that I gave as a gift to another time slot I was told absolutely not and that I would lose the full price of the appointment. The staff who handled my problem lacked any critical thinking skills and were rude and unhelpful. I told them that I would find someone to attend the appointment but that their lack of flexibility had cost them a regular client - the said "oh well". I honestly considered giving a homeless person the appointment - maybe I still will. FYI the cancellation fee is 100% of the service. Good luck!

Cons: too many to mention

Ratings_icons Great cut, lousy staff

flyjules

My experience at this Aveda "chop shop" was mixed. I ultimately walked out with a great cut that I still get alot of compliments on. The atmosphere , however, leaves alot to be desired. The staff are so rude, aloof, the waiting space (it is a very small bench) is uncomfortable, and it is a loud , not relaxing experience. I had Ceceila as a stylist and she is very good with cut and styling, not great with color. My roots did not quite match the rest of my hair. The plusses are the hours of operation and the price. I think I will give them just one more try.

Pros: Hours, price

Cons: Staff attitude, noise, chaos

Ratings_icons Best Salon I've ever been to

bellissima121

It's so funny because I read all these bad comments about the Salon..when really it was the best salon experience I had. The staff were very friendly, I waited maybe 2 minutes and I was even early. Cecilia is amazing she listened to EXACTLY what I wanted and explained what she was doing as she was cutting. The shampoo was great and you even get a free neck and scalp massage. They even give you beverages. So...I don't really know what all these other people are talking about..I paid 55 for my haircut and it was well worth it. And Cecilia is amazing and I hear Tanya is good too. So...for those of you with color issues..that may be a different story, but if you just want a haircut and trust that the people will listen to you..go to this salon and go to either Tanya or Cecilia..you won't regret it!

oh and they even call you after your first time and ask you for a survey of your experience and even send you a free gift sample in the mail. How fun!

Pros: very friendly staff, quick service, did exactly what I wanted

Cons: small space

Ratings_icons Don't Do It!!

cedar5555

Those who describe this as a "hair factory" are right on the money. It's crowded, loud, and your entire experience is rushed--which I could deal with if I came out with a fantastic cut 'n color. No such luck.
I paid a premium for a "senior" stylist, who butchered my hair in a way that made no sense whatsoever. Super-short layers at the crown, thick and blunt in the back, and thinned beyond all belief on the sides. WEIRD. And worse yet, LOPSIDED! Next was my single-process color. My natural color is fantastic, but a little bunch of grays has cropped up in a prominent spot, so I like to cover this up. I advised the stylist that my grays tend to be resistent to color, so please take whatever precaution necessary to ensure maximum coverage. I was ignored. And upon washing my hair the next day, my grays were revealed, merely tinted rather than covered. I wasn't pleased. But a day or two later I got a call from the salon asking me if my experience was satisfactory. Um, no. They said they were willing to redo the color and cut at no charge within two weeks. GREAT! So I went back. Big mistake. The cut became even MORE lopsided and thinned at the sides (the stylist actually asked "do you like the cut?" "Not really."). No one bothered to set a timer during the coloring process, and it apparently was not left on long enough, because the GRAYS WERE STILL VISIBLE WHEN I LEFT THE SALON. Even more surprising was the demeanor of the assistant who washed and dried my hair. While making small talk, she asked if I had kids, and was offended when I looked at her strangely and said no (I expect this type of lame small talk in the burbs, but not in the city. I didn't move to Manhattan to be Holly Homemaker. Neither did she, apparently--she's from Queens. Ugly Betty's long lost cousin.). Then she blew my hair into some weird mullet-looking shape and sent me on my way. Did I mention she also gushed about how great I looked? I was embarrassed to walk home.

Pros: location

Cons: unskilled, unattentive staff; redo was a waste of time

Ratings_icons Not worth it.

aimeepav

I went to Scott J after just moving to NY because I was always extremely pleased with my experiences at the Aveda salon I went to in Ohio. I got a simple trim and my hair looked pretty nice when I left the salon, but for the price ($50-something), the hairdresser I had was not at all friendly and I agree with another user who said like they were being rushed in and out of a "hair factory." I don't mind paying $50 or so for a haircut, but I would expect better service. If anyone can reccomend another salon in the general vicinity of Columbus Circle where I can find friendly service and good results at a price that won't break my budget, I'd greatly appreciate the input.

Pros: Nice haircut

Cons: Cold and unfriendly service.

dempseycarter

What a nightmare :( I was so excited about having a haircut/blowout last night. After paying $52 for NOTHING, I had to go home... re-wash my hair, and re-dry it to feel comfortable about going out! I was so upset. While the staff were fairly friendly, the results of my visit were abysmal. This place needs to think about hiring 'real' hairdressers. The only thing it has going for itself are the Aveda products. Aveda should consider disassociating themselves with this salon. Can't be good for building brand loyalty.

sag1125

I have had several unpleasant experiences at Scott J on Col. and E. 86th: an attempted bait and switch, being overcharged, being treated rudely. I won't even start to explain, but I will say I will never get spa services here. I have written through their website to complain and not gotten a response. When I checked out after services and they asked how everything was, I told them the issues but they didn't care or do anything. Most spas would comp you or adjust the price. I've even written the owner, Scott J himself, and asked for a response but not gotten one. They don't care about customer satisfaction. It's in and out!

I went for a very simple Blowout and Styling. My hair is straight but I just needed someone to make it look "nice" for some photos. So, I thought it would be fairly easy for them. After my shampoo, the guy did NOT dry it at all! He walked me over to my chair and my ENTIRE back was sopping wet(down to my pants)...so wet, that it soaked through my cape and my bra was soaking wet! No towels were used. Anyway, it gets worse. The "diva" of a "Senior" stylist was so rude.He blew out my hair and made 2 or 3 curls for volume. It was a joke, I could have just asked my dog to play with my hair and it would have looked the same.It cost $52 ! I should have treked down to my usual stylist down in the East Village :(

If you are looking for friendly service, don't go here. They are lacking this. Ratings_icons Bad Hair Factory!

daisy900

I've visited two of the three Scott J salons in Manhattan and I have to let all of you know that I felt like I was rushed in and out of a hair factory! None of the stylists spend enough time cutting or coloring your hair to do a great job. I swear this old man cut my hair in 5 mins on the east side and it was completely lopsided and unflattering. When I called and explained my experience with the manager, she was rude, and quickly dismissed me. On a better note, the spa staff if more than qualified and actually takes plenty of time to make you feel pampered. I would advise going to a different Aveda salon that is inviting, relaxing, and the staff does a thorough job.

Pros: spa staff

Cons: rushed hair service, manager customer care, not thorough

By some unfortunate coincidence I had the same stylist twice, the second time five years after my first bad experience. I thought that maybe I would give it a second chance. I have been to the Columbus location on several occaisons...haircuts, facials, waxes and manicures. Their haircuts are great..the stylists and friendly and they've always done a great job! The spa services are "so-so"...they are great if you just want to go to a spa to relax and be pampered but if you need serious skin care, Id go somewhere else. They really try to up-sell the Aveda products which can be a hassle. But overall, I think its a decent salon for the money and the hair stylists are really, really good. PLUS..they have fantastic hours!

I've had numerous disappointing experiences at this salon. The hairstylists seem to take their business for granted, because each time I had to request a consult before my hair was washed. And, each time, the stylist spoke with me briefly, ignored any questions I had and gave me a "standard, generic" cut. A waste of my precious cash and my time.

The woman who dried my hair and washed it - now, she was great. I tipped her well. The stylist - too much of an ego.

Pros: Clean, Aveda Products

Ratings_icons Rejuvenating Spa Experience

seven127

I Celebrated my 30th Birthday two weeks ago and part of my celebration was my unforgetable spa experience. It began with a relaxing massage, a fun mud wrap, a rejuvenating facial followed by a spa manicure and spa pedicure. The staff was caring and wonderful and I left there feeling fifteen years younger!

Pros: Caring Staff, Radiance Facial, Aveda Products

I was thrilled to find a salon open on a Sunday. It even came with a recommendation from someone who used to go there. Key words being "used to." Though the staff was very, very friendly, their skills paled in comparison. My eyebrow shaping left me with pink spots that, 24 hours later, are still there and can't be concealed by any mortal makeup (and I don't use a skin medication that may have caused that). My trim was a chop, and my color came out too dark and too uneven. Worst of all, when I asked if he could dry my hair wavy (like it naturally is), he spent about 2 minutes on my hair with a difuser and left it styled worse than I was capable of when I was 11. I would avoid it if I were you.

Pros: open on Sunday, nice staff

Cons: lack of talent, careless

Ratings_icons Too much attitude and brassy highlights

alemat24

I've gotten to this salon for a couple of years, but because of recent experiences, I'm looking for a new place to spend my $300 for a highlight, cut and wax.

The staff is too rude. Plain and simple.

I tried to change my highlights because my hair always look too brassy. The colorist was obviously nonqualified and covered it by arguing with me for ten minutes about my what "blonde" is.

Everyone there from the spa to the front to the hair stylists are rude, RUDE, RUDE!

Pros: Aveda products

Cons: Rude Staff, Can't do blond highli, Bad service

I agree with the rating that it's hard to relax. I had a facial today and all I heard were clopping heels above my head in the salon and people talking...but it was that muted Charlie Brown teacher talking. The facial was good, their hair services are MUCH better!!

I really had an amazing experience here. I had multiple services, both in the salon and spa. The decor was very zen, and the staff was so helpful and friendly. They also have great hours(they are open until 11 at night!!!) so it was great to come after to work to unwind. I had a great massage and facial with well trained technicians, and finished off with an amazing cut. I get compliments all the time on my new style. They also carry all my favorite AVEDA products--GO HERE!!

Pros: Affordable, timely, nurturing
