i eat here about once a week with a few friends. the food is high-quality and not your typical mexican place. guac, salsa, corn on the cob, salads, and the tacos are all amazing. the mahi mahi tacos are really spicy if you like that

Best Mexican in NYC!

I love Mexicana Mama! Not only is the food fantastic, (comforting, delicious, with a perfect balance of traditional and modern flavors) but the decor is warm and inviting, and the staff is great!

My partner and I thought we'd try a new Mexican in the neighborhood. Sat down, service friendly. Ordered two $13 margaritas that came in a shot glass-and only half full. Chips and guac-passable. He ordred special mahi-mahi tacos; small and fish was all flaked inside like it was left-overs. I ordered Checken enchiladas-how can you go wrong here? Terrible flavorless mush. Accompanied by a small bowl of bean mush and cheap rice. 24 hours later I was slammed with food poisoning. And we paid $100 for two!

My friends took me to this place and the food was awesome. Delicious, yummy sauces, tasty dessert, good margaritas, and very friendly service - what more can you ask for? I usually frequent Rosa Mexicano which is very close to where I live, and while Mexicana Mama has less variety and is smaller, the food and service are fabulous. And the wait time is not that long. I highly recommend this place and will go there again.

Pros: Yummy food

The food here is not bad, but they charge you for chips and salsa (unheard of where I come from)! The whole dining experience would be greatly improved by removing a couple of tables. Do they really need to pack us in like sardines, just to make a few extra bucks? We will never go back.

On Friday January 2nd around 7:15pm my husband, my brother and I showed up at the restaurant and were told that the wait would be 25 minutes. We put our name down for 3 people.
15 or 20 minutes later, I came back to check on our reservation. There was a couple in front of me who were told that there would be a 5 or 10 minute wait for a table for 2. When the hostess saw me she said the table would be ready in 5 minutes. I said Great!
Two side by side tables for 2 were being freed near the door by the hostess station. After the tables were cleared the hostess pulled a chair from the entrance area and said that she was going to accomodate the 3 of us on one of the tables (for 2) and was going to give the other table to the couple who had arrived 5 minutes before. She was clearly embarrassed to have to say that and she said that her manager wanted to do it this way so that they could have 5 diners in a space made for 4.
Now my husband and my brother are both over 6 ft 2 so there was no way we could squeeze the 3 of us in the space. So we asked to see the manager. She came and defended her point. Take it or leave it. I stressed that we lived here and were no touris, that we'd come to the restaurant regularly, that she could not treat us this way but to no avail. We left, disgusted, and will never go back.
Frankly, the food is not the greatest at this place, they don't accept credit cards, and this is no way to treat paying customers.

Cons: Overpriced and rude

Truly mediocre in every way. The only thing that was good about our meal was the tequila, which they did not make.

$18 fish tacos are a joke. This is Mexican food for people who just don't know better.

I am from Texas and lived for 9 years in California.

This restaurant wouldn't stay open in either of those two states.

you can't get in there on a Friday lunch time with the queues out the door. I don't think it was ever meant to be an evening destination, but it is perfect for picking up something on the way home from work! The portions are great, and the food is always tasty. Its all made before your eyes and served extremely quickly - in fact, in less time than many other so called "fast food" places. I for one hope it goes from strength to strength.

I found this place walking around and decided to go in. I loved it so much. The ambiance was so pleasant. The restaurant itself is so pretty to look at, great decor. As for the food, it was so fresh and delicious. The sangria was unbelievable too. If you go get the enchiladas, you won't regret it.

I just took a client of mine to Mexicana Mama. She had never been there before, and I recommended it for good Mexican food, great atmosphere and impeccable service. We shared the queso flameado to start - A perfect combination of cheese and sausage. I had the pork tacos, and she had the enchilada suiza. The food was unbelievable, and no explanation I can write here will do it justice, --- The more important thing to mention is that this is the kind of place where not only is the service well-paced, but the employees are happy to be there and take the time to make good recommendations. Definitely check it out.

Decided to go check this place out the other night. Was blown away...awesome flavored margaritas, the salsa was like none I've ever had before. The burritos we different too so good, they had butternut squash in them! My friend got the enchiladas which were so good. Our service was great...attentive and polite. Will be returning soon.

I was a bit disappointed after all the hype around this place.. the place was indeed packed and that made the service slow and a bit rude. My server forgot to bring out our quesadilla appetizer and did not even offer to resend it or any other consolation. Additionally our server was rude when we ordered a pitcher of sangria snapping at us "We only serve drinks by the glass"
The nachos were OK and came with a house special mole salsa which was delicious but before you knew it the small portion of $4.50 nachos was all gone (and of course no free refills even if you have more salsa remaining).
The enchilada was very gooey and not entirely flavourful.. it was drenched in cheese and for a lot less money in the same neighborhood could get a much better enchilada.
The chicken mole burrito was also a bit soggy and nothing special, again for that price could get a much better more authentic burrito around the corner.
The dessert was very good, however. We had the chocolate cake of tres leches which was delicious.

On the plus side, the decor is very pretty, and the waiters were trying to be helpful.
Now, the rest was bad or average at best. My special chicken entree was tiny, dry, and flavorless. My white sangria had too many ice cubes and a piece of lemon...where were the fruits?? Really bland..tasted like water. The apetizers salsa and corn were average. I didn't bother with a dessert, and left hungry...my first time in a Mexican restaurant!

But that's the atmosphere that was the worst for me. It felt like a pretentious Soho meets UES battle of the clones. The tables are next to each other, so there is zero intimacy, and the patrons looked so fake.
The blonde woman manager was really weird and rude. She should not be in this business...Zero people's skills and very unpleasant vibe.
My favorite Mexican is still Rosa Mexicano at the Lincoln Center.

Sometimes the wait can be intimidating, but I've waited longer for food not half as good....also it's very rare that the waits are as long as the estimate. The service is always friendly and knowledgeable and even when busy, ensures that the restaurant experience is above par. The specials are amazing and the decor is adorable. I've never had a bad experience here...my favorite mexican in new york.

I have to say, I've walked past this place a million times and it looked adorable. Looks are deceiving. The staff was EXTREMELY rude. When they finally deliverd our food to the table, the manager chastised us for not ordering enough food. Maybe they should have said something when we put our order in. I don't know how that's even possible since our bill came to $50 a person!!! For Mexican food?? The service was very slow and they repeatedly mixed up our drink orders...meaning they never brought them. The mole sauce was good, but definitely not worth the wait, or the slow, rude service.

The atmosphere here is just what you would want for an informal Mexican restaurant. Cozy and festive. The other location just looked too small for us to enjoy. The house margaritas are good (they are strictly on the rocks) and the menu was expanded greatly by the number of specials, which were inventive and very good. Our service was outstanding. We don't want to set the restaurant up for granting special favors, but when we realized (after arriving) that the policy was "cash only" and we had brought only credit cards, the hostess made arrangements for us to eat first, run home after and settle up before the end of the night (despite the fact that it was our first visit). .

.

What kind've a mexican restaurant charges for chips and salsa? Not only that, we were charged more than what it was on the menu beacuse apparantly we got the "special salsa". The margaritas also turned out to be more than originally stated. We got two expensive appetizers, two margaritas, chips and salsa for over $50. And...of course they only take cash. We left feeling like we were robbed...and we were still hungry!!!!

This place is stictly for tourists & yuppies who know no better, the restaurant tries to pass itself off as gourmet mexican,it aint! (try La Esquina or Cafe Habana if that's what your looking for) I live down the block from this spot ,me & my girlfriend tried it the other night, the food was indeed diferent from most mexican spots in that none of it tasted mexican, the guacamole was basically some chunks of advacado (for $9) the chips were chewy (basically stale, but i guess we are meant to think this is some kind of delicasy),for entree's we both had grilled chicken with rice & beans, the chicken was dry & the rice & beans were flavorless,so after a few bites we asked for the check.
The check was $80 (they only accept cash & automatically add 18% tip to your bill).
For $80 we had 1 order of salsa,1 order of guacamole,2 orders of grilled chicken w/rice & beans & 1 beer.
I could have saved myself around $60 & had much better & more authentic mexican food had i gone to our regular local spot The Big Enchilada 1/2 a block away.
You live & you learn.

I frequented the one in the west village and was excited for the new one which opened literally under my building. I always thought of Mexicana Mommas as a neighborhood spot that didn't have the attitude of the corporate cash-cows. Anyway, I went down on a Wednesday night to see if they had a long wait and the hostess said they had a table to accomodate my party. I then told her that the rest were upstairs and she said no problem. I called my group to come down. In the 3 minutes before my group arrived a random party walked by and then came in. Right in front of me the hostess gave up my table. When I told her that they were literally walking out the front door and I could see them 10 feet away she said there was nothing she could do. I couldn't believe how absurd her response was. I know restaurants need turn-over to survive but they also need repeat customers...

My friend promised me this was a 'different Mexican' restaurant, and she was right. The place is adorable, and the entire staff is super friendly and down to earth. After eating at so many pretentious places in the city, I find this very refreshing. The margaritas are absolutely fabulous, made with fresh fruit and lime juice. You absolutely can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Watch out though, because many of the dishes are pretty spicy (this is coming from someone who's half Pakistani, mind you)- you might want to ask about this before ordering something. We went late on a Saturday night and sat right down, but watch out because the place is bitty and you'll probably have to wait if you don't go on off peak hours. They have a small bar where you can wait, but I would call before heading over to see what the wait is first.

I am so happy this restaurant opened in our quality-food-at-fair-prices-deprived area. I've eaten at the other location on Hudson, and 12th St. allows for a much more relaxed and enjoyable eating experience. The special salsas that we tried were phenomenal and the guac was delicious as always. Our party had a fun time sampling the drink specials, I recommend the jalapeno margarita or any margarita..they use fresh lime juice. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees, but the hangar steak with chorizo was the overwhelming favorite. The staff was really great with helping us choose our order too. Highly recommended...at least once a week!
