Water's Edge

My wife and I went to Water's Edge for a romantic dinner. We had a very nice time. The waiter was attentive, the food was delicious and the views of the city were great. I'd definitely go back again.

My husband and I got married at Water's Edge this year in March. Our experience was subpar, we were not treated properly by the owner and the manager. As part of our contract Water's Edge was picking our 75 guests by boat from the east river dock and bring them to the restaurant. My husband to be and our family were supposed to be picked up an hour earlier so that we could do the pictures and install the flowers on the table. With the wedding invitations we had mailed the address location to the dock to be picked up from the dock. However 3 days before the wedding I received a phone call from the owner saying that they have problems with the dock in question and that they are going to pick us up at a different location and that we should contact all our guest and family and that Water's Edge will provide a shuttle bus at the old dock pick location in case someone shows up at the old address. Needless to say that we were very busy before the wedding and calling each guest was not an easy task as many of those coming from Europe could not be reached. Believe it or not, Water's edge did not provide the shuttle bus and the guests who I could not reach to tell them about the change of address didn't know where to go. They waited for the boat that never showed up.

To make matters worse, the first boat which was supposed to transport my husband to be and myself with all our family was 45 minutes late. I was in my wedding dress freezing on the dock waiting (including my 85 year old grandmother and 3 year old niece and nephew - waiting in the cold). They finally sat us in a temporary boat until the boat arrived. As if a wedding was stressful enough, we had to take all my family pictures in less than 15 minutes. Needless to say the pictures were very few. The flowers got done in 5 minutes after confusion of who does what as we had so little time to prepare ourselves before our guests arrived. What the owner had not told me either is that the Maitre D needed my direction on everything as the owner had forgotten to ask me all important questions before the wedding. To top it all, at the time of lunch, the restaurant served the wrong wine. A wine that we did not select at our wine tasting. It was a tasteless wine that we know was a cheap $5 wine. I asked to replace the wine to what we had selected but it took them 30 minutes to figure out what wine I was talking about (meanwhile we had insisted that our friends and family were wine lovers and that wine was essential for our celebration), as we waited at the table with our appetizer, there was nothing to drink for the first 30 minutes of the meal.

The owner while at the restaurant did not even come once to apologize or ask me if things were ok after all. Also, the food was overcooked and they tried to compensate by adding some kind of sweet glaze on the fish. This was certainly not consistent with the Zagat rating that they have. They insisted the champagne was real and was not sparkling wine, but when they showed us the label a few minutes later it said it was sparking wine (i.e. blanc de blanc). Also, they forgot to feed the photographer even though his food was paid for. Other than that, the guests loved the view and the waiters and Maitre D were excellent. Unfortunately, I keep a nasty memory of the place.

Went here with my fiance for Valentine's Day and should have went with our original idea of a Big Mac. It would have left me satisfied and with more money in my pocket. The gentlemen at the door leaves you out there while he checks to see if you have a reservation while the parking attendants run around like chickens with no heads. We were seated at a small table surrounded by several other "young couples" while the more "mature" were seated by the windows and able to enjoy the view (the one good thing about this place). The poached lobster salad was mediocre at best and the lobster cold as ice. The salmon was flavorless and over cooked and my red snapper looked as though it sat in the kitchen for 30 mins before actually being served. The dessert was a classic strawberry ice cream log one could purchase at Carvel. It took about 30 mins for everyone to get their check and they even gave me another table's check and change! The other table was given their check without being served their dessert! WHAT A JOKE!

We have been dining with you for all teh holidays for teh past 25 years. We love the atmosphere created by teh restaurant for every major holiday. The decor for Thanksgiving was perfect,i.e. fall colors and the exact feeling needed to enjoy teh wonderful food and service. The view, perhaps the best in all of New York just adds to the atmoshere. Water's Edge is the place to be and be seen on all the holidays. We just love it.

I have regularly dined at the Water's Edge since 1989. been there at least 4-6 times a year. the food and the view has always been great - the service has been great too albeit a tad stiff and cold. This year i decided to dine with my family on Thanksgiving - there was a different ambiance - with the same decor - from being greeted at the door by an obviously pregnant lady with a glow on her face to being served by a wonderful man - Edmund from Greece i think. the FOOD WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. Great job chef. i will be back NY's Eve. i recommend this location very highly.

I went to this crappy restaurant on Thanksgiving. Unforgiveably poor quality: ugly interior (worn, dirty carpet; uncoordinated color scheme.) Nothing "well-appointed" about it-although...doesn't look like the photos..
I felt I was in a Goodfellas movie or in the 1980's with old women --blond wigs, fake diamonds, too much perfume, frightful makeup.
The "live music" is a good piano player on a very poor quality piano; the service was overkill with host in our face every 10 min. probably wondering if we were going to bolt because he must know the food is bad!
The "food" edible, but cheap. We had prime rib which the host said could be cooked rare or well-done. ...Nothining in-between he told us, until we pushed him that meat can be cooked more than two ways. Primerib was served with a lackluster "dollop" of a spinach concoction. No potatoes. Too cheap to give you potatoes with the meal so they included "carmelized onions" that were unedible. DESSERT WAS AWFUL (pumpkin cheesecake tasted like cottage cheese and food coloring.) WE HAD TO HAVE THEM REMOVE IT. They offered another dessert but who would want more of that s*$t.
The "view" : boring, ugly and looked out on patio seating that was chipped and worn and needed to be thrown out. The view of buildings is not impressive - maybe it's better at night?
The decor is rose pink chairs with hunter green table cloths. Candles were orange and yellow; some napkins were dark orange. UGLY. You can tell that they try to get off as cheaply as possible and I think someone there must be color-blind. Think of an old woman on social security trying to decorate as nicely as possible on a budget.
We sat there just trying to figure out why others think this is a decent place to dine. BAFFLING. Then we looked again at the folk there: you can tell they don't get out much. Nothing classy about this dump at ALL. Olive Garden would be better. TAKE YOUR CHANCES IN MANHATTAN. As for this shack: fahgedaboutit!

The food is rich, but good. It's pricey, but you pay for what you get. There were four people at our table and the servers will synchonize and time how the plates were bought to our table. well...that's where the expensive part comes in. You pay for this interesting service routine.

The service from the minute I walked in the door was phenomenal.......Courteous & Capable waiters tended to every whim.
The food was the best they have served in years......What a change. I hear new owners
And as usual the veiw was to die for.....Take the little ferry it takes 10 minutes and make a lasting impression on your guests....Try It!

Went there for restaurant week and was thoroughly unimpressed. We waited for a half an hour after our 9:30 p.m. reservation with 10 tables open. Then, after we were sat, we waited another 20 minutes until anyone came by to ask us if we wanted a drink.

The food was TERRIBLE and serving size was made for a child. I could've spent 120 dollars a lot better IN THE CITY.

Best thing about the whole night was the free ferry ride. I do NOT recommend this place at all!

Have read a lot of reviews regarding Water's Edge, both pro and con. Dined there on 7/22/08 for the 1st time, food was mediocre, not impressed, and will not go out of my way in the future to eat at Water's Edge. There are a lot of restaurants I've dined at in NYC that have better quality, portions and less expensive.

FOR ALL OF THE PEOPLE THAT CRITICIZE WATER'S EDGE, YOU SHOULD JUST SHUT YOUR MOUTHS. IT HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN OR MNEAR MANHATAN. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THAT THE FIREWORKS WERE UNABLE TO BE VIEWED, BUT I AM 100% SURE THAT THE FOOD AND SERVICE WERE PERFECT. specially holidays like july 4th or mothers day . stay in manhattan in have a great experince. there are many places in big apple better than this circus. we had a terrible experince with this place we will never go back .
they charged us 200 $ per person and plus tax,tips total of over 500 $ two people , and day before when they called to confirm they laired to us about the table and fireworks we could not see the fireworks in clear ?
Well it's too late now! THINK TWICE AGAIN BEFORE GO TO THAT CIRCUS!

Dear Guests and Reviewers, the company of Water's Edge is completely aware of the problem. For 25 years every July 4th we had great views of the fireworks that's why people chose to be with us. This year Macy's decided to move the fireworks to 23rd St and lower, from the usual 34th street and Water's Edge only found out on the day of.
We will do our best to rectify the situation. The company is very responsible and is having meetings for the best solution. Please understand that it was as unexpected to us, as it was to you all.
It is very unfortunate that you're judging us so poorly.
We wish to see you all on an other night where we can bring our best food forward.

We visited the restaurant on July 4th, hoping for a decent meal and a great view of the fireworks. While the ferry trip from Manhattan was a nice start, it continued downhill from there. We were greeted by rude people and the restaurant, to be kind...needs refreshing. We were rushed through a dinner of mediocre food served by a waiters in dirty uniforms, only to wait 2 hours for the fireworks to begin ( it was suggested that we arrive early to get a good table/view when we made the reservation) Once they did begin we realized the view was blocked by the commercial buildings next door. At $ 200 per person ...we were quickly reminded that leaving Manhattan was the first mistake of the evening. I was never one to write on a blog to be critical ...but since the Water's Edge felt it fair to charge the $$$$ paid in full before the evening) , they should be reminded, it?s nice to get what you pay for ...and at roughly $500 for two (tax and tip included), that would suggest good service, good food and a clean environment ...none of which they succeeded in providing.

Rude and incompetent service from people wearing dirty clothes. They brought the wrong stuff, told us it was the right stuff, got mad at us, etc etc. Really terrible. The view does not make up for it.

I had to post on here, because I went to Water's Edge for Valentine's day with a group of people, and was simply amazed! This place goes above and beyond when it comes to the most stunning views you have ever seen...their decor is elegant, and the lights from the city though their glass windows brought a smile to my face that lasted all night. As for the food, I ordered the Chilean sea bass, which I have never had before- but this experience made me a fan- it was delicious and flavorful! I wish I had taken the ferry over from Manhattan, because I heard others talking about how nice it was...but unfortunately, we didn't get to experience that this time. I would recommend checking this place out at least once, whether it be as a couple or in a group- definitely romantic, or just great for some relaxing conversation!

The food was average, nothing to write a review over. But honestly, they could have served me a Happy Meal and I would have been content -- I got my money's worth the moment I set eyes on the view and the dining room. The city skyline, viewed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, never looked so clear and vibrant to me. The dining space is cavernous so that all get a good view, with the extra added touch of having everyone's seats turned toward the windows. Inspired and inspiring ... this is a place where you ask someone to marry you.

We decided to try Water's Edge during restaurant week. We weren't sure what the Prix Fixe menu would have to offer, but decided that the restaurant was too pricey to try any other time.

We were 2 couples in our 20s dining together. We all found exactly what we wanted in the prix fixe menu, and it did not disappoint! We were all so happy with our food. It far exceeded all of our expectations, and that's saying a lot, as we usually expect too much and leave disappointed.

For the first course, 3 of us chose the Tomato Gazpacho with avocado...yummy!!!! We loved it. One other person tried the Arancini, and he said it was good (it looked good, too).

For our entree, two of us chose the roasted sirloin, and two chose the duck. None of us chose the salmon, but it sounded great. The sirloin was excellent!! Good quality meat, perfectly seasoned and cooked exactly right. Absolutely delightful. I tried my companion's duck, and it was really outstanding, too, with just-strong-enough bursts of cinammon among the other spices. I would have been equally happy with the duck. None of us had anything but good things to say about our food. Dessert was just okay, but no one really comes for dessert.

I must say, though, that if I hadn't come for restaurant week, the prices would have scared me away.
If you are reading this too late to make reservations for restaurant week 2007, then definitely mark your calendar for 2007. This is a good choice!

Truly one of the worst dining experiences we've had in ages. This restaurant is soooooooo overrated. The only good thing is the view, which serves as a constant reminder that there are thousands of better choices packed within the blocks of Manhattan just over the river. The wait staff (which oddly are all Indian) rushed us through our menu selection, but was slow to check on us throughout the meal. And they had the audacity to ask for 2 tips on the bill (one for the captain??). The wine menu is impressive only if you want to spend more than $100 per bottle. The "economically" priced wines are marked up 4-5X resale value. Most importantly the food was unimpressive. My BF confessed after dinner that he knew it was going to be a bust when the "fresh" mozzarella in our salads was salted (I've created a monster). There is no excuse for salted mozzarella in NYC unless you are in a pizza joint, and even then... But the salad turned out to be the best part. They claimed the fish entree to be endangered chilean sea bass, and probably wasn't (which is just as well). It was between that and a steak dish which didn't sound good. Later I saw it on another table and was glad I didn't get it. I should mention that it was restaurant week, but that's no reason to lower the quality of the food and service. The risotto that was served with the fish appeared to have come out of a box and was jazzed up with frozen peas. I ordered carrot cake for dessert, which consisted of a plain stale mini muffin, with a garnish of carrots and raisins on the side. It's been a few weeks and I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the experience. Finally, without going on a totally snobbish rant, let me just say, this place epitomizes the phrase "money can't by class".

I would recommend this place mostly for the great view. Ask for an outdoor table in warmer days. The food has been consistently good but not as innovative as many other restaurants in the city. The decor could use some upgrading. I have more modern tastes in interior design and I can see the potential for this space if you use minimalist furniture. The faux Victorian (I'm not sure what it is) style they are trying to achieve makes the place look aged. Their waitstaff needs more polishing but in general they are courteous. They also have a sommelier who was very helpful in recommending wines and was not at all pushy in making us order the expensive bottle. Yes, I suppose, you can call it "touristy" as more people get wind of this place, but that's not always a bad thing. It is also very pricey but I think it's worth a try. The boat ride to and from the restaurant is just breathtaking it makes you feel glad you live in New York so why not share the joys of brilliantly-lit skyscrapers to others?

If you like your kitch in large doses with a hint of turn-of-century bordello and cheesy Indian "trying to be classy but failing" atmosphere, this is the place for you! True, a nice view of Manhattan, but it is a restaurant after all so the whole selling pitch can't depend just on view - which from the inside by the way is not spectacular due to the poor design of the restaurant. In summary, below-average food and above-average prices. If you're cheesy and don't know much about food and want to impress a date who hasn't been around much and is very easily impressed, it's the place for you - particularly if you like over-paying. If you are a discerning diner, take the water taxi there and back from Manhattan to enjoy the view, then go to a real restaurant.

Our appetizers of gazpacho and shrimp were excellent. The entres: Chilean Sea Bass (good) and the Duck (very good) were memorable. The Creme Brulee for dessert was fine. This is clearly designed for those who have an event to celebrate (marriage proposal, anniversary, birthdays, etc.). Plan to spend a lot on the evening. The service was fine, but english was a second language and very difficult to understand. The ferry ride from 34th street pier was bumpy to the restaurant, but the return trip was eye-popping....if you are a native, you should at least try this place once.

I went to Water's Edge a few weeks ago for dinner. Although it isn't a "Trendy" atmosphere by any means the view is wonderful. I would suggest however to request a window view that is not blocked by their ferry... I was sitting in front of it and it was great when the ferry left but when it returned it blocked our view! I ordered a sea bass and it was DELICIOUS... The food was rushed a bit but its a nice place to go if you want a nice view and a very good meal!

My husband surprised me this past Saturday for our anniversary. He just told me when to be ready and that was it. I was surprised by the ferry ride to the restaurant and the service from the very beginning was impecible. My husband had the sea bass and it was totally awesome. My scallops were fantastic as well. The maitre'de came by to ask how our meal was and when my husband told her it was our anniversary, she came back with two glasses of champagne.

Our waiter was very nice and even sang "Happy Anniversary" to us and we got a second glass of champagne on the house.

It was an awesome evening and we will return very soon!!!

We were not offered a prix fix menu and were expected to order drinks. When we asked for water, regular tap water, they made a face at us. They kept coming asking if we want to order drinks and did not except no. The menu was given to us verbaly, after we ordered and got the salad we were told that one of the choices was not avilable. We had to order from the regular menu and were charged the regular price, plus an additional charge for the salad which would have been included otherwise. When we tiped according to the service (12%) the waiter came back and asked out loud to verify the amount of the tip. We are not tourisits but we felt like we have just been treated like tourists who don't understand restaurants. We will not go back or recommand it to others.

From the Boat Ride from Manh, Cocktail, Dinner, View, Piano Music & the return trip on the ferry the service was excelent. Everyone was very attentive to the point were the head waiter call us by name" How is everything Mr & Mrs". Try to Have a time to enjoy the Piano Music before or after Dinner. Dinner was all delicious. It is hard to find all of this in one Restaurant.

I thought the place was very romantic especially the boat ride back and forth across the East River. What a relaxing way to spend a few hours with someone special. back. But all in allwhat a great experience. The servers kinda pushed utensils, coffee etc. without saying excuse me, just passing over you like your not there, my date almost got her chin clipped by the coffed cup. The my scallops with risotto were to die for, my date's duck was overcooked/dry. It was raining when we got there so we couldnt sit Alfresco, but saw the seats outside, I dont know if they're that comfortable to sit on through dinner. Requested a window seat but didn't get it, which was fine because we still had a nice view a table away from the window. Definitely the bus boys/service guys need some more finesse in dealing w/ the table.

What a wonderful place! We had the tasting menu with wine. What a fabulous deal! We had the "4 course" tasting menu which was really 7!! The tasting menu is $75 a person and we added wine to it for an extra $38 a person. This included 5 glasses! Even with our large appetites we could not finish all the food or wine, which has never happened with a tasting menu before.

Such excellent service as well. We were not rushed out at all and really enjoyed the live piano player. Taking the ferry over also made it very romantic.

my 4th visit here was just before xmas 2003. once again nothing to complain about other than i ate too much. It my be pricier than other restaurants, but look at where you are. This converted barge sits on the east river with the best view of Manhattan in queens. An entree is very reasonable here. The appetizers and $14 martini my not be your best value. If the weather is nice, take advantage of the outdoor deck. Lunch is a great value if you can't afford a minimum of $50 pp for dinner. Or better yet, if on a budget and want to do something romantic, stop at the bar for a drink and enjoy the sunset.

My gf and I celebrated an anniversary here. Being here for the first time, the maitre'd seated us at a nice corner table. I was a bit disappointed since this restaurant is supposed to have a great selection of wine, yet the captain did not present us with a wine list.
Regardless, here's what we had: salmon salad/duck salad, ribs/fish, and two orders of the apple cinnamon ice cream. They knew it was our anniversary and everyone wished us a good one! That hit the spot.
One oversight: the gf wanted tea to go along with the plate of yummies they gave me, but the server forgot to bring it since we took our time to finish the wine. The captain apologized for this and all was well.
Well visit again soon. :)

I must admit, the view there is spectacular and thats it. My wife and I are avid restaurantuers, we have been around the city from daniel to the brassiere. We looked foward to going to the waters edge for a quiet dinner. We dont mind paying $200 for dinner and wine (stags leap), we did mind the mediocre service and OK food. The crab must have been frozen, van de kamps or something out of the wal mart freezer section, and the the waitstaff appear as though they were recently employed, "OH? does thet fork go on the right or left, let me ask the captain" After, the eating a catered typed meal at 5 star prices we witnessed clients being hauled out like cattle on a farm, after the check of course "your boat is ready sir". I would rather eat at olive garden and look at a postcard.

We went to dinner at Water's Edge last Valentine's day & it was not what my boyfriend expected. He made reservations thinking it was a real romantic place. Don't get me wrong the place is beautiful & the view is great but if you expect great service don't go there. We felt cattle being herded in the restaurant. We were waited on like robots from the unhelpful staff & then we waited forever for the check since the wine was not included in the $300 prix. Who knows maybe its just special occasions when you don't receive personal service. But wait isn't that when you would like it?

We had a wonderful evening in the Water's Edge. It was our wedding. The food was excellent, the service outrageous. Although it is a really fine restaurant, nobody was highbrowed and nobody had problems with our little children (3 and 5). The view over Manhattan is phantastic. We enjoyed the ferry ride over the East river. I would recommend this restaurant to everybody.

I had reservations about the place,because my experience has been that restaurants whose claim to fame is the view are frequently 2nd rate in terms of food, service etc. I was pleasantly surprised.We had requested a table near the window when we made the reservation, and we got a two seat table with a terrific view. We were greeted & seated promptly. The decor is romantic.The captain and waiter ( John ) were friendly and attentive. The food was above average, my girlfriend had red snapper, I had filet mignon, we both enjoyed our meals thoroughly. My filet arrived a little rarer than I had ordered, and it was promptly reprepared as asked, with no problem at all. Dinner with a couple of drinks, dessert, and tips ( Captain & Waiter ) came to a little over $200, but it was a special occasion, and well worth the cost!

Starting with a boat ride from their 34th Street dock over to Long Island City and a stunning view of east side Manhattan while you dine, it just doesn't get much better than this. The meal is a reasonable $55 for three courses and the service is extremely thorough and attentive. The meal is above average, too. The evening ends with a boat ride back to 34th Street and whatever you care to do after that.

Cant do much better if you are looking for the perfect romatic dinner. When reserving, be mindful of the weather and expect to pay good money for the delicious cuisine doesnt come cheap.
