My father used to work at a Swedish company and he used to travel there all the time for business. I was not so lucky in the aspect and I am curious what Scandinavian food consists of besides meatballs.

Finally, restaurant week granted me the chance to sample it for a reasonable price!

For appetizers, we tried the herring sampler and boar salad. I was a bit scared to trry the herring at first because it is basically cold fish. It tastes surprisingly good and there is very little fish smell. The wild boar salad was also great. My boyfriend, who doesn't like salad so much, was totally impressed.

I got the Asparagus Barlotto for entree and my boyfriend got the roast beef. The asparagus dish tastes like creamy asparagus risotto but it uses barley so it is actually healthier. I got to say the dark green color make the dish slightly undesirable but again it surprised me. The roast beef is also good but I guess it is not very special.

I really like their dessert, Budapest Cake, which is chocolate and hazelnut moose cake paired with ice cream. The dish I got, Cardamon pound cake, is good but nothing to rave about.

The service is definitely 5 star and I really like their simplistic design. I am glad I got another great NYC restaurant under my belt.

Sometimes the food gods smile upon us, and we feel lucky. I was fortunate enough to feast with great company during Restaurant Week at Aquavit, whose dining room would otherwise be priced out of. This day, however, I was granted one of the more sublime lunch experiences I have had, in a warm, wood-paneled space that took me in out of the January New York cold. The quite affordable three-course menu had us tasting a melt-in-your mouth artichoke bisque spiked with truffle crme fraiche and bits of venison, a smooth and perfectly pink seared salmon topped with bright orange roe, and a chocolate lover??s dream of a chocolate mousse to end the meal. The service was also impressive: on our way out, no less than five people wished us a good afternoon, and one even walked me to the bathroom. I??ve never been to Stockholm, but if this is what its like, I??m on the next flight.

This is a pleasant room with high ceilings. Unfortunately, that's where the compliments end. The smoked salmon was utterly tasteless (odd for smoked salmon but true) and the poached cod was also very bland. Plain boiled potatoes tasted like plain boiled potatoes. Even the horseradish is weak. You can't definitively say the food is "bad", but this is only because it is all so bland. Is the Cafe expensive for New York? No. Is it expensive for small, plain and unseasoned fish dishes that would be outshone by fish at your local Greek diner? Absolutely. FYI the bartender also is terrible - the mixed drinks there stink.

I've eaten here twice. Once for a business dinner and we ordered the chef tasting that was paired with the different vodka's for each course. And the dessert was great. Second time, the food was average, so there was some inconsistency, but the service was good. Although I couldn't understand what the wait staff was saying when describing the dish.. englsish was not a first language.

We went to Aquavit for Valentine's Day. Granted, I understand they must serve more people than usual on a night like this, but I expected for $95 per person that the food would be decent. The prix fix menu (which they have every night) looked fabulous on arrival. Our drink order was taken immediately and the aquavit flights were delicious. However, the meal went downhill from there. They took our orders and specifically asked if we were allergic to anything - and we responded shellfish and squash. The appetizers were good, but the next course was supposed to be a tuna tartare and THEY RAN OUT OF TUNA! They instead offered us a beef dish that was bland and almost inedible. We told the staff that it was not good, and they tried to make it up to us by bringing us a soup course of squash soup. So, after telling them about our squash allergy, they brought us a squash soup! When I reminded the staff, they grumbled behind me, "well, i tried." My entree of beef was equally uninspired, but the trio of desserts were good. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The entire meal lacked passion and you can eat much better food for that price.

Food is good but pricy for non expense account dinner. We weren't pleased that they try to hide the restaurant menu. we had to request it.

Aquavit is the type of place, at first glance, that seems a bit on the stuffy side - a little too stiffly pressed and polished. The door is so nondescript that you could easily mistake it for the entrance to any generic office building lobby. Once inside, however, you'll feel like you've been transported to the Helsinki airport or to some swanky hotel in Sweden. Relax, the staff here is so remarkably nice and helpful, you'll thank yourself for staying and letting them walk you through a tasting menu - drinks, meal and dessert. It's all fantastic - very grown up and utterly worth the price. Highly recommended.

I made a reservation here not knowing how expensive it was going to be, but it turned out to be the best meal of my life hands down. Yes the bill was around $250 for two, but it was an experience that I will never forget. The service and food was impeccable. If you are a foodie, save your money and come here at least once in your life.

Since my mom is actually from Sweden (moved over to the US when she was 15), I'm always skeptical about Swedish food in America. My mom and I decided to take the chance and try Aquavit one night on a whim - we chose the cafe area rather than the dining room - and it instantly became both of our favorite restaurants. The choices in aquavit all sounded so good it took me forever to choose, and needless to say, there was no disappointment for either of us. Having always been my favorite Swedish food, gravlax is what I ordered. Not only was the texture and flavor sensational, but it was exactly the right portion as well. Swedish food has a tendency to make you feel heavy very quickly. With the portion I had, I felt full, but not heavy - a hard thing to do with this type of cuisine. After a couple quips in Swedish with the waiter (which I found extremely impressive for a restaurant in America), my mom ordered the Swedish meatball, which she makes at home from scratch for any Swedish holiday. She loved them! After dinner we split a princess torte (our favorite Swedish dessert), which we found impressively authentic, and lingered over our coffee because we both loved the environment so much. The style is clean and chic, but relaxing.

I could not imagine my dining experience being any better than it was here.

First off, I am writing about the cafe not the dining room. But there is no listing on citysearch for the cafe, so what else can I do. We tried it for restaurant week. They seated us in what is normally the bar lounge area because there was a private party in the cafe. So the ambience was lacking a bit because it was not a real dining room. First we had a drink at the long, mostly empty bar. The drink menu is extensive and the drinks were excellent - cranberry caipirinha, lychee martini. The bar stafff all seemed a bit depressed. The mood was quiet and relaxing. Is it just me or should a bartender be friendly and happy? Anyway we were seated on time in the makeshift dining area and the decor is very white, very modern, and very Scandanavian. There were weird jars of mysterious stuff in liquid on the shelf behind me, I didn't think it was very appetizing. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. I went for a chilled corn soup and the swedish meatballs, which is one of my favorite things. Both dishes were excellent but I wanted more gravy on the meatballs (the portion was big enough for a 400lb man). My boyfriend had the herring sampler and the hot smoked salmon, he said both were very good. Dessert was some itsy bitsy chocolate cake thing, only enough for a small doll to eat but WOW was it delicious! I was unimpressed w/the table setting, I felt a bit like I was in the IKEA cafeteria. All staff seemed slightly depressed. We got free espresso infused Aquavit after dinner and wow I would have enjoyed another 3 or 4 of those. If I went back it would be to try the main dining room. We looked at the menu and it looked great. The main dining room is very cold and austere with somewhat strange lighting. But I guess that's the Scandanavian way and I'd say it's probably worth a try. This is a good place if you need a quiet bar for a drink. There was hardly anyone there and the drinks were super delicous.

As a regular diner at Aquavit, I'm surprised to read these past comments and am compelled to write about my experiences. The food is consistently good and I often take my clients as well as my friends. The decor is very warm and spacious and the tables are placed well apart from each other. The entrees are consistently good and innovative (smoked trout with apple-horseradish broth, Venison with dumplings and lingonberries) and the Scandinavian staples include several preparations of cured salmon and herring ? all delicious. The service is warm and inviting and the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful, including the sommelier who found me a wonderful wine off their extensive list that impressed my clients without stretching my budget. And those who call the maitre d' snobby must have been in a different restaurant! He always takes good care of me and is there almost every time I go ? lunch or dinner. Overall I would recommend Aquavit to anyone who is looking for a classic meal in a stylish environment. I'll be back again and again.

I can not believe that you can get a job as a waitress at Aquavit with clearly no waitress experience at all. Our waitress managed to get everything wrong. First she forgot to put in our drink order, meanwhile she dropped silverware all over the floor. After returning with new silverware, she somehow, believe it or not, did not know that the fork goes on the left, and the knife on the right. We were in shock. After having to ask about our drinks again, we finally received our them at the end of the "very average" main course. At this point, the manager stepped in and offered free dessert. We got the dessert, but not the ordered coffee. To top it off, our bill was more than double the correct amount. The whole wait staff including management was scrambling for a good fifteen minutes to figure out the correct amount before we could finally get out of this resturant experience nightmare.

I completely agree with Globetrotter 79. This restaurant is awful. Listen...I'm a gourmet and I know what's good and what's not. Swedish food is not spicy or complex (compared to other cuisines). HOWEVER, good Swedish/Danish food is just that-GOOD. It will be fresh and taste delicious. You don't even have to be a gourmet to know that this restaurant is not all its hyped up to be. In fact, it is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE. The same HOST (perhaps he was the same who was mentioned by Globetrotter) was nasty, cold and arrogant. The food I ordered (gravlax) was blah. I love gravlax and I've had delicious gravlax. I might as well have gone to McDonalds. Yes-corporate types who have no taste go here...and if you want to get real Danish or Swedish food-GO TO DENMARK OR SWEDEN-because if this is supposed to be excellent-we're in trouble here in NYC!! Don't waste your time. !

After drinks at the Four Seasons Restaurant (my absolute favorite NY bar) ,six friends and I decided to further the evening at Aquavit. One in the bunch is Swedish. He selected the herring sampler of three flavors. Curried, pickled and a third which was gone way before it got to me were incredible! Light and full of flavor!!!
The Swedish meatballs accompanied by a delectable limgonberry sauce, pickled cucumber and the finest (in texture and flavor) mashed potato I've ever. eaten. The cheese plate with layered potato was purrrfect!
We must have consumed ALL of the aquavit flavors - Grapefruit (light and crisp), Vanilla Pear (my favorite! was to die for), Horseradish (fiery, great on a cold night), and - Berry (delectable)... to name a few.
We ate in the bar, in enormous 'Womb Chairs' which as great! This area is very relaxing, and more casual than the main dining area which requires a jacket. Service was impeccable, prompt and extremely courteous.
Everyone in the group consider ourselves 'foodies' , eat out a great deal and are often fairly difficult to please. All of us, thoroughly enjoyed the food and service. The architecture is modern with a strong Swedish influence which enhances the foods presentation even further. We were the very last to leave the restaurant.
In short...Very well done. I cannot wait to go back. It is now one of my top five favorite restaurants.

If you are in NYC and are looking for a unique menu, definitely check this restaurant out. From the home made aquavits (try the cucumber and coconut cappucino) to the entrees (steak tartare is incredible), this restaurant is simply amazing. The service is also impeccable. The ONLY negative thing I will say is that I preferred the old location, but who cares... Whenever I am in NYC, I always go to Aquavit. You should too.

My boyfriend took me for my birthday and we had a beautiful evening. It is true, the prices are high, $85 for the 3 course prix fix, and the portions are not very large, but with amuse bouche and other small surprises that seemed to be coming from the kitchen we did not leave hungry. I had the lobster roll appetizer and it came with a special mini cocktail, gingerale and aquavit. Fabulous!!! Our waitstaff was extraordinary, even the man with the bread basket ( fabulous assortment) had impeccable manners. I got the " arctic circle" as a special birthday dessert, this is what someone else described as the " goat cheese thingy" : goat cheese ice cream which is more like a semifreddo. I would not have ordered it from the description but it turned out to be our favorite. Would definately recommend this restaurant.

i agree with the reviewer about the amazing nastiness of samuelsson's support staff and in addition the food is fantastically overpriced and truly mediocre -- my fiancee and I were looking forward to a special evening and instead we agreed we have eaten better food on airplanes -- how this Samuelsson ever got book contracts, tv appearances, etc is beyond me since he seems to have no talent either for cooking or hospitality -- or maybe it is just the ugly mood of his employees that makes a tri to Aquavit so extremely depressing. who knows?

This review mainly concerns the ?service? category. We did not stay long enough to even see the menu so have no comment on food.

In mid September 2007, my family honored reservations we secured two months in advance. We were greeted by the restaurant host (S.K.) and escorted to a dining booth. Just as we reached the booth, S.K. abruptly redirected us to a table near a service station. When we asked to be moved, we were told it was not possible. S.K. seemed to ignore the fact that about 75% of the restaurant was empty!!! We left and have no inclination of returning to this or any of Samuelsson's restaraunts again.

P.S. The decor of the restaurant?s new location was mediocre.

Pros: None

Cons: Poor Service and Poor Environment

.

my wife and i reserved a table for our anniversary only to be greeted by an incredibly snide and rude young woman who kept us waiting for ages -- the foor was certainly not worth the price and we will avoid all of this Samuelsson's many restaurants in future.

Pros: centrally located

Cons: vastly overpriced and nasty staff

The $39 brunch here is a fantastic value. The food is fresh and delicious. The aquavit-based cocktails are terrific and give you a great buzz. It's the perfect meal before a lazy Sunday aftnernoon nap.

Go to the restaurant - avoid the cafe. The furniture was stained and torn and the food was below average.

Aquavit is one of my favorite places in the city. I personally prefer the cafe, but the main dining room is fantastic as well. The swedish meatballs are out of this world. I highly recommend it for lunch. The service is not the greatest, but it gets the job done. A great place to take someone if you want to impress them. It is a bit pricey, but well worth it.

We ate in the main dining room and our prix fixe selections were gloriously interspersed with unexpected amuse bouches. First, the tiniest cup of butternut squash soup was delivered and was marvelous.
After the first course we received a round of fish and a crisp with caviar - also delightful. Before dessert: an amazing warm soup topped with sweet cream - decadent.

The actual courses, however, were inconsistent.
My date got the oyster/mussel plate and while the mussels were heavenly with a sweet green oil sauce, the oysters came topped with caviar that was so salty they were entirely overwhelmed.
My foie gras was creamy, not at all gummy, truly rich - but was a poor choice after the butternut soup I'd just finished. The medallions of squab on the side were just ok.

His entree was halibut - which was topped with a creamy almost pesto/pistachio sauce and well flavored. His potatoes, however, where unappealing.
My 'brioche crusted salmon' merely tasted like it was coated in lemon zest - and there was nary a touch of brioche to be seen. Crusted? hardly. But when it came to the veal cheeks that accompanied my salmon - they were succulent and delicious.

For the dessert sorbets: The coconut was amazing, and I am not exactly a coconut fan. The vanilla was actually fairly bland, and the blueberry was merely tart.
I myself ordered the Arctic Circle which physically was not attractive as it is served as a cylindrical mass topped with a scoop of the same tart blueberry sorbet. I suppose we could liken the physical aspect of this dessert to something from Ikea. Again, the goat cheese parfait was dull, but the interior curd was tart, creamy, and exciting. It gave the otherwise disappointing dessert a much needed kick.

I realize I should have tried the lobster roll, or the herring sampler (after all, is there anything more Scandinavian than herring?) - but I did get another glass of the glorious Loganberry Aquavit, and all was right with the world.

So, I'm not the biggest fan of Aquavit, but it may be more a reflection of my personal taste rather than the food itself. I've been to both the formal dining room, as well as the less formal room, and the food is good. But scandinavian food just doesn't appeal to my palate, so I will only say that it must be wonderful for those who want and appreciate the nordic cuisine. On that note, I didn't find anything wrong so much as I would have preferred to have another type of cuisine. The food was fresh, the service attentive and formal, and the ambience consistent with any 4 star restaurant...

I went to Aquavit about a year ago with my aquavit drinking, Swedish family. All I can say is that everyone (there were about 9 of us) was incredibly impressed. Service was impecable and food/ drinks were out of this world. Everyone tried different types of aquavits (and the cranberry infused martini was AWESOME). We are not a very adventurous group of eaters, but the waiter was very well-informed and guided us into making great decisions when it came to ordering. Food was prepared and served with care. Our waiter made the experience even better. He talked up my Grandmothers' 85 year old boyfriend all night. Yes, the place is pricey, but well worth the cost for an unforgettable night with my family.

We were four of us for dinner on a Saturday night. At the door we were warmly greeted by a lovely young lady who took us promptly to our table. After receiving champagne to start with we decided to have the chef's tasting menu. Nowhere in the city can you have such an inventive and delicious menu. The service was top notch as usual and the new space is even more beautiful than the old location. Aquavit can do no wrong.

It was an experience I wish I could give back. I left completely unsatisfied by the pretentious cuisine and unentertained by the lack of character (especially the fact that there is no music in the dining room). I am not obtuse about trying different foods, but the uptight menu and atmosphere were a turn off. I would certainly never bring visitors or friends if I wanted to share some joy and laughter. I felt like I was in a library. Their specialty vodka however was a breath of fresh air, as when all else fails to amuse you, get a little tipsy I say. I understand the restaurant recently moved to its current location. Quite a waste of real estate, as they would serve our city of fine dining best if they were to move some place a little further...Pluto perhaps, which I understand is no longer a planet. Well this place should no longer be a restaurant. It should be a shelter to feed the hungry. Seek your pleasures elsewhere.

I've been to the old location several times and loved the atmoshphere. I recently came to the new one with a friend for lunch, and liked the updated modern 60's lounge vibe. We ate in the cafe, and chose from the limited restaurant Week Menu, but everything was outstanding! The herring sampler is a must! The vodka selection is extensive, and the innovative combinations will tickle your taste buds.

Admittedly, I want Aquavit to be amazing since I am partially swedish but I have been finding that I'm not thrilled with what I find here. I went, today (my third visit to the place), for this week's special peel-and-eat crayfish. The last time I did this was 6 years ago and I remember a whole special crayfish inspired buffet. It's been reduced to only peel and eat and frankly, I was dissapointed. It's not just that the only special crayfish dish was the peel and eat but that they weren't nearly as good as the time before. They lacked good crayfish flavor (it's actually not in season here in the US right now... so why have the special at this time? is it in season in sweden?... possibly) and the toast and potato that came with it were just as bland. Even the dill flavoring was lacking. The first plate I received had a nice presentation with fresh dill on top but the next plate didn't have it... either they forgot or were lazy, I'm not sure. Similarly, my girlfriend ordered the fresh corn orzo and it was lacking in flavor. Almost as though no salt was used in preparing it. The cauliflower soup made up for it being a bit too salty... but only in spots... uneven seasoning. Then to make matters worse, the service wasn't good either. The previous reviewer was absolutely right. Our waiter was not helpful when asked about the dishes. All he said was "everything is good." At a place of this supposed caliber I do expect more. Also, I expect that the bread is on the table before we get our appetizers not after and that when asked if I would like another plate of the all you can eat crayfish it should arrive before the person next to me who ordered it 5 minutes after I did receives hers (several minutes before I receive mine). A small detail, yes, but like the previous reviewer, these things make a difference at this level. Mr. Samuelsson needs to do a quality control check as it seems to be slipping in both food and service.

I have been going to Aquavit for quite some time. Being from Sweden it definately takes care of that craving for good Swedish food. Their new space is beautiful I always thought the cafe at the old location was a little depressing. Last night I popped in by myself and I have to say being such an upscale restaurant the service was really bad. Waiters didn't seem confident about the menu, they seemed to belong in an italian trattoria where they'll say everything is good without further description. At the table next to they had asked for some ice and the waiter simply brought a glass full of ice no spoon, so the guest had to use her fingers. That may seem like a small detail, but being in the business myself I just think those little things determine wheather you have a staff that cares and thinks or just robots wanting to make easy money. I think Mr. Samuelson should get some better representatives for his food on the floor, beacause I think Aquavit has the potential of being packed every night. The cocktail are great too. Reading other reviews it does seem as if it is a reoccuring problem.

We were so looking forward to our dinner at Aquavit after reading great reviews and jeez were we ever let down. Decor was nice, service was overbearing and food left a lot to be desired. Staff pushed the tasting menu insisting that if anyone at our table wanted to order it the whole table had to order it, an all or nothing deal. At least 3 times we were told we should all have the tastng menu. Food was very dissappointing, staff was constantly hoovering around table to tell us EVERY ingredient in every dish, service was SO SLOW a 4 hour meal.

I enjoyed the old space and had some great meals there. In the new location the food is great and service friendly but clueless. Drinks to go with appetizers arrived with desert (though complimentary..), dirty plates sat on the table 10 or 15 minutes, and the maitre d's obsession with getting us to order pinot (he pitched it 4 times..) seemed bordering on deranged, as was his desire to describe every dish on the menu in minute detail (we read the menu thanks..). Perhaps it is just teething problems but with a min $75 menu this should be right ...

It's a shame the restaurant no longer has a waterfall, but the decor is nice nonetheless. The service is also good, though a little off. The waiters have a bit of trouble with English and sometimes it takes a little time to get their attention. The bread is very nice as is the butter/goat cheese spread. The herring sampler leaves a lot to be desired. The taste of vinegar overpowers everything else. The hot smoked salmon entree on the other hand is original and very pleasant. The prix fixe lunch is a great deal.

I went here for restaurant week and even though there was a $35 prix-fixe menu, the bill came to $120 for 2 with tax and tip. The service is superior here. The decor and ambiance was very special, as was the carefully chosen music, wine list and Aquavit-based cocktails, however, I wasn't terribly impressed by the food, which is supposed to be the main attraction when going to an expensive restaurant. I ordered the tomato soup with goat cheese (the soup was way too sweet but the generous portion of decadent goat cheese in the center almost made up for it) and the swedish meatballs (the meatballs were savory and delicious, but textbook. The mashed potatoes, though smooth and creamy, were an exercise in overseasoning, and were so salty and buttery they bordered on inedible.) The desserts were the highlight, and were surprisingly sublime.
