Pros: great food, friendly & attentive staff, reasonable prices

Cons: not large enough for big parties

We live in the neighborhood and decided to give it a try for lunch--BIG MISTAKE! Two out of four orders came out wrong (the place was not busy at all) and the french, poser waiter stubbornly insisted that it was our fault. The ravioli was almost raw and the rest of the dishes ranged from mediocre to horrible. Atmosphere is pathetic. You're better off going to Jin, the Japanese place down the street or Barrio Chino if you don't mind the crowd. You're even better off getting a sandwich at 88 Orchard, the coffee shop across the street.

Pros: Picturesque view of the parking lot

Cons: Just about everything

this is my first review but i had to say something about this terrible experience. first: service was rude and patronizing. second: food was barely edible; i couldn't eat my dish and was hungry half an hour later. third: place was deserted. fourth: everyone at my table was disappointed. i wanted to leave the restaurant immediately and i will never return.

I grew up in NYC and have had my share of horrible meals, but last night truly ranks up (or down) there with the worst of them. It was like the cooks had never cooked in their lives before. I ordered a grilled squid salad only to discover that the squid heads had not been cleaned and still had all of their mushy innards. Then my friend and I had ordered a hamburger to split. The hamburger was RAW. The inside wasn't even warm! We sent it back and my friend said, I bet they give us the same burger. Sure enough, they had piled all the bits (that we had cut apart) back in the skiddle and gave it back to us haphazardly piled on a new bun! When we complained, the waitress snapped at us "You expect us to throw away FOOD?" and charged us full price for everything ($15 for a raw burger--not a bargain!). I won't even go into how disgusting our cocktails were--made with the cheapest sweet mixes even though we specifically requested fresh juice. We sent them back only to get the same exact drink again. I will never eat there again.

M and I were warmed by the friendly reception and the quick attention, but when we complained about things -- we asked for drinks with no rose's lime juice and got nothing but rose's lime juice, the smiles continued as the same flawed drinks were brought back to us three times. The food was underprepared to say the least. And expensive!

I went to Casanis few times already, and i have to say that i had a spectacular time. The place is gorgeous, it fells like being in Paris, the food is EXCELLENTE. The chef is the same than the former Casanis on 1st street, that we all remenber, of course. The service is good, and attentive. The music is pleasant, Really, Casanis is becoming to be my favorite french spot in NYC.
Last sunday, for brunch, we sat down in the outside terrasse, it was Lovely. Congratulations.

Pros: FOOD

We went to Casanis with a group of friends the other night and were extremely disappointed with the place. The service was simply horrible. They took forever to take our order and after one hour of having ordered they came back and told us that the plate that 3 people at our party had ordered was not available because they had run out of Tuna. It should not take any restaurant 1 hour to determine whether they have tuna or not. The food then took another half an hour to arrive. Overall, we spent over 3 hours in the restaurant where the service was horrible. The food was not bad and desserts were particularly good but it is not worth it. There are many other French restaurants in the city that serve excellent food and have good service.

Best friend and I went there for a wonderful dinner. Perfect date spot. Or catch up with your best friend spot. Everything was perfectly done. Service was attentive but not annoying. Food was very fresh. Loved it. Great prices.

This is the first time I have ever written a restaurant review on CitySearch. I had such a bad experience last night that I just had to post something. We live on the lower east side and we were thrilled to see Casanis open. We had planned to make Casanis our regular joint. We had dinner there and my husband and I were so disappointed. First of all, it was a deserted on a Friday at 8 pm so we should have been suspicious. The service was on the slow side. My husband ordered the Steak au Poirve and I had the Steak Bernaise. His was just awful; filled with grizzle. Mine was less terrible but barely edible. We were so disappointed and remarked that the two cuts of meat were so bad, we would not cooked them at home, much less expect to be served such an awful piece of meat at a new restaurant which should be trying to make a name for itself. We also ordered salads to start. Frisee is a quintessential french salad so the chef should know how to approximate it at the very least. He didn't. Cafe Charbon is around the corner and so is Les Enfants Terribles. Both are much better choices. We will not return to Casanis.

Pros: location, wine list, available seating

Cons: food quality, speed of service

.

I was excited to see a new French place open in the neighborhood but was disappointed when I tried it. The service was extremely slow and inattentive and the food was only mediocre. Needless to say I don't plan to return. It might be fine for a drink, but I wouldn't eat there unless things have changed dramatically since then.

Pros: Location

I've been here a few times and for the most part have had an enjoyable experience. The food is consistently decent (the mussels were better than decent and the tuna steak was one of the best I've ever had. Simple, but fresh and sweet. huge steak au poivre and burger.) I'm a diner who prefers the company of my guest to the chatter of waitstaff so I felt the service was just right. I felt taken care of but without any extra a@#-kissing. The fact that half the staff is French also adds to the bistro charm. I like to be able to have a glass of wine and an entree and feel like I paid for what I got (quality, portion size, clean, comfortable). Casanis is good for that.

Pros: Mussels, Neighborhood Feel, Cute Bartender

Cons: Outdoor seating smelled bad in summer heat

casanis is a really cute french bistro in an up and coming area. great ambiance, delicious food and the kind of place that lets you linger after your meal. the escargot was fabulous, good muscles & pomme frittes and yummy drinks. good music. been back a couple times since it opened and would definitely recommend it... there is outdoor seating which is nice in the summer too.

While the food was not bad, the host was quite offensive, making the whole evening not worth the trouble. The 10 oz. steak was passable, and while not extraordinary, for the city it was worth the price. Though a member of our party explicitly requested vegetarian food, and was promised that a pasta sauce could be made without meat, the entree arrived with meat. No big deal, we are flexible; but the host chose to come over to our table and accuse us of making a mistake. He was incredibly rude, and didn't discount the price at all despite the staff and kitchen's mistake. Ultimately, the vegetarian was served box pasta with jar quality sauce. With small drinks, mediocre food, and a rude host, I will think twice about returning to this restaurant.

The atmosphere is great, more elegant than most of the places in the hood. Drinks were made by someone who clearly respects the cocktail and what people look for in a cocktail and the burger, damn smart chef, is not only voluptuous but also served on an english muffin. Next time I go I'm trying the escargot for sure because the table next to me wouldnt share. (Okay, I didnt actually ask.) Anyway, I've lived in the 'hood since the nineties and it pains me when places move in that suck, but I'm content with this new option and sort of wondering why I'm writing this review now because it wasnt very crowded when I went. Ah, you'll find it anyway so why bother keeping it secret.

Being french, I am always surprised on how "french bistros" are successfull in New York, because if you've been around in Paris a bit, they're nothing like bistros in Paris ... But I have to say it the formula works, Pastis, Schiller ... So Casanis is trying ti repeat the same formula. Same trying to be french bistro decor, floor, table, menu cards ... Overall, it's mixed. Excellent steak au poivre, steak tartare eatable but doesn't taste at all like a steak tartare you would eat in France, same for the escargots ... The kitchen is small and you have to wait a long time to be served.
So it looks french but it's not. It just doesn't taste like one. I would not recommend. This is New York, there is a million restaurants to choose from, why bother ?

I not only went there for dinner on Friday night, but Casanis is so good that I had to go back for Sunday brunch.
Finally a place in the Lower East side (not on clinton street) that has lovely food to match a lovely atmosphere.
As a local I hope this place continues to excel, but only enough so that I can always get a table.
From the oysters to the burger this place rocks!

When I first saw Casanis I thought to myself "what a bright place in an otherwise dark corner." I went inside and felt I had come home. An amazing find in the lower east side that, up till now, has lacked great restaurants at affordable price. Forget Clinton Street and their overprice decor and menu, Casanis has great ambiance, great food and great prices. The decor is beautiful (check out that bar!!!). The owner, Mukta, put the beautiful floor down himself and he did a magnificent job. I live in the neighborhood and having Casanis here has just increased the value of my co-op. I always say trying is believing, so try Casanis and you decide for yourself. By the way, the service is excellent.

This new french restaurant has the most amazing food. Everything about the place- from the decor, the table, the bar...even the bartender feels authentically French. The ambiance is great- laid back, trendy and relaxed. I highly recommend this place- I've been there twice already.
