I love this place. It's not super pricey and the food is delicious....just so fresh. I am a regular here! I would highly recommend this place. Try their shrimp tempura rolls and their crab salad appetizer....delish!

I've frequented the place for over a year. Can't believe that each time I go the sushi is always fresh, great cuts of seafood. I really enjoy the spicy rolls and yes...the peanut butter too. Can't seem to skip the kimchee squid appetizer either. Service is great. Very neighborhoody. I feel like I'm cheating on a lover if I go elsewhere for sushi.

Ginger is a small place but their sushi is high quality. The best is the spicy tuna roll, which is just perfect. There are many other fancy looking and great tasting rolls and plates. Absolutely love this sushi restaurant. I just wish they were open Sundays..!

I saw the previous negative reviews and felt I had to speak up. I had been here several times over the past 3 years. Brought my wife-to-be this last Saturday night. She had never had sushi and was apprehensive, so I figured this was the spot. The two appetizers we got (wasabi pork, sashimi in wasabi soup) were great, and really spicy. We ordered severals rolls, mostly spicy tuna. Each was great. My fiancee was not a fan of the banana in one of the rolls, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. We went early so there was only one other group there. The service was top-notch, the beer was cold, and the fish was fresh. No complaints from me, and I'm excited that my fiancee wants to go back again soon.

Pros: Great rolls, solid appetizers, great atmosphere

Cons: $100 bill for two people, wasabi pork was TOO spicy

For a small restaurant like Ginger, they offer too many choices. It makes me wonder if they have the freshest fish in the menu as claimed by some of the reviews here. Further more, the place is not that busy .

Too Many not that special rolls, needs improvement on their sauces, take out some of those mediocre rolls. Nice decor though.

This place is amazing!! There sushi is top notch and some of their creations are so unique and wierd to the sushi world that you may think yuk!! peanut butter in my sushi? He don't knock it till you try it, and if you don't like it thats ok it doesn't make this a bad sushi place. You can always go to teriyaki boy and have some fast food sushi. People who really appreciate good sushi and eat it alot will know right away that this is a great place!! I highly recommend GINGER. Why don't you be the judge.

There's so much rave about this PB thing. Inventive roll but just a tablespoon too much of Skippy. Trying too much too little. Too many special rolls which they aren't really special. Hate that teriyaki.

This place is fantastic. The fish is always very fresh and tasty. The menu is interesting with some daring and unique rolls, but also with the general sushi staples. And the service is always so friendly and accomodating. Its always such a pleasant atmosphere. I see that some people have attacked some of the rolls that Ginger uniquely offers. Well here is some general advice for these reviewers --- Order with common sense....if you don't like peanut butter -- then don't get a sushi roll with peanut butter on it. I for one enjoy the peanut butter rolls......but not too much -- I prefer to share a roll, because the pb can overwhelm the taste of the fish. If you like spicy tuna..., you have to try the Muse or the RedHead. For the more traditional sushi roller......go for the Queen, which combines some great pieces of fish. The tuna tartare app is awesome and its a huge portion. The White tuna sashimi is also an excellent app. Fresh & tasty fish, interesting rolls, great value with large portions.....you just can go wrong, and the staff/service is always very friendly and attentive. I have been here many many times, and it has yet to disappoint. Just hope it doesn't get too popular.....I like it as a EV neighborhood kind of place

Ginger has to be the best deal in NYC. It sports the freshest sushi/sashimi which is creatively prepared. The Yellow Tail & White Tuna exceed even Nobu but Ginger is easily 1/10th the price. Even the little details like the miso soup are treated with care (& it's grreat btw!!). Ginger is a real charmer as it's a labor of love of the owners & the wonderful staff. You can eat a lot at Ginger, have a saki & still pay only $30 with generous tip. It's small so if you're going with a large group make a reservation. Ginger is one of the great things about the East Village!

Seems like all the reviews rave about the "unique" rolls the restaurant offers. Yes, there are plenty of unique rolls.... but a tablespoon of peanut butter does not belong on sushi! I only tried it b/c of the positive reviews I read. However, if you're curious but don't think it sounds good, don't try it! Why? Because it does not taste good. I had to scrape each sushi roll clean of peanut butter in order to eat it!!!
(btw-- it wasn't even 'all natural' peanut butter... it seemed to be the brand of peanut butter with the most sugar possible!)

Sushi and a small decor equal a nice neighborhood establishment where folks can enjoy quality food and service for reasonable prices. The place is not cheap mind you, but thats what most people should expect out of sushi that is prepared well.

Sushi was just so-so. Special rolls are not special except for a couple. I loved the ikamaru however.

Since our first visit there just after they opened a few years ago, Ginger has been our favorite restaurant. The dishes are inventive and fun but rely on basic good quality: consistently fresh ingredients, huge butter-like sushi/sashimi cuts, and reasonable prices. The service is wonderfully unpretentious and familial. Though the menu includes some unorthodox offerings (a peanut butter roll, for instance), the classics are pure and great--we've never had better sushi anywhere, including Japan. And do have fun with the funky rolls and appetizers--we especially recommend the White Tuna Sashimi (with a wasabi sauce), Crispy Tuna Tartare, and Dynamite appetizers; the Triple Don main dish; and friends who are sukiyaki connoisseurs said that Ginger's is one of the best they've had.

If you make a reservation for a less-crowded week night, Ginger is a great place to bring a group. We've enjoyed more than a few mirthful birthday gatherings there.

I don't understand why this place has gotten so many great reviews. I was very disappointed that their sushi was far below average...wasn't pretty, wasn't fresh, wasnt tasty. True, Ginger is inexpensive, the service was friendly and they make some unique rolls, but personally I rather visit my grocery and get even cheaper sushi of similar or better quality.

Ginger is tiny, so don't go in a big group, but definitely come with a big appetite. The rolls are so creative and combine flavors you never would have thought go together well, but totally do. The owner is also super nice and very attentive and everyone is so friendly and ready to get you whatever you need. Don't miss this little gem.

I have never posted on Citysearch before but just had to after I had THREE amazing experiences here.... this is the BEST sushi I've ever had- and I'm a discriminating food snob. I love it here. Their rolls are creative and eclectic- they mix the most wonderful flavors and have very inventive combinations of sushi-- but they're not overly ambitious (some sushi restaurants I find try to be too creative or modern with their sushi... and the result is too often an overflavorful mess). HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended- Nothing compares to Ginger.

I was there a couple of months back. Service was good. There were some interesting rolls. However, the manager was too personal and he never seemed to stop talking. Telling me and my friend how we should decorated our room in order to have good luck coming our way. I found that a bit annoying. Please let us enjoy our food.

Isn't Muse similar to Red Head? I thought Prince, Queen, and King are the same with different names. Service is good but I don't need the free food. The tuna tartar gave me an awful taste like glue.

I went to Ginger the day it opened and since then have been going back at least once a week. It is absolutely the best Japenese for the price in the city and I LOVE Japenese food! The muse roll is addictive, the tempura is light and crispy, and the yaki udon noodles are a great. The staff is so friendly and it has a real nieghborhood feel to it- they remeber our order and how we like it cooked whenever we call. Go now before the word get out!

Ginger is a little oasis in the noise of the east village. While they have all of the basic rolls and Japanese dishes, the reason to go to Ginger is for the unusual ones. The Banana Crunch is the right mix of everything - sweet, spicy, mild and crunchy and the Seared Tuna appetizer is amazing! Everything is simply designed but completely beautiful, in a wabi sabi kind of a way. The service (and the owner) is very personal and friendly. They also have a great selection of saki - I really enjoyed the unfiltered one.

Really creative rolls...and a very peaceful environment. Try the banana crunch roll, it is really an experience! but beware of the tuna with jalepeno. it's really hot and half-filled with jalepeno.
i would definitely go back, for the price and the interesting sushi.

I went to Ginger on a sushi-loving friend's advice and was not disappointed. The fish was fresh and the combinations inventive, the service was doting (though a bit slow), and the ambiance spa-like. A real treat for the price.

Creative specialty rolls and reasonably-priced sashimi make this spot sweet even without the complimentary ginger ice cream at meal's end.
