I have wavy hair but both my sisters and my mother have seriously curly hair and when they want the best haircut possible, even though it is pricey, they go to Ouidad because they KNOW how to cut and train curls. They will do a beautiful job.

so i recently went to ouidad after searching the internet like crazy! i had a early appointment before work..i figured if anyone will tell me the truth after a cut its my co-workers. i was set up to see melissa but when i got there they told me that she called out sick and that another stylist alex had to take me..i could care less i just needed help. she sat me down and dicussed what we were going to do. she saw and understood the problems i felt. after a long consult and she cut and did a styling demo on me and set me home with a booklet with everything to recreate it at home its been 3 weeks and i love it still!! my co worker noticed right away and sayed this is the best i have looked in a long time..gee thanks!!

Pros: soft and touchable

Cons: wish i did my deep treatment there

so i called last minute today and booked an appt. i was so nervous nut my friend convinced me too. so i called and i got alex. i was even more nervous because i read a bad review on here about how ends ended frizzy.. but i was being dragged. so she sat me down for a consultation and really listened to me. i told he about the review and she said that frizz is part of the condition of your hair no the cut ask any chemist or stylist they will all tell you that. ok. then she continued to explain what she was gonna do and taught me so much along the way. no other stylist ever did that ..or said what i was gonna say before it came out of my mouth.. the end result was great!! she taught me how to style my hair and how to sleep on it and gave me a booklet to take home to replicate! i love her for making me love my hair again...thanks alex!! i strongly urge you to to go ...if your nervous just go in for a consult there free! which i didnt no that sure would have saved alot of kicking and screaming along the was

Pros: finally got what i was looking for

Cons: not open sat in summer

Ratings_icons What's going on in the NYC OUIDAD salon-great to disaster

DeniseMac

I have been getting OUIDAD haircuts for 6 years now. I started in the NYC salon and my life changed the day I left. The method of carving and slicing was amazing and I left with long shiny curls that made me love my hair. The products were also amazing, I could not get enough of the clear control pomade. When I moved to Massachusetts I started going to OUIDAD certified salon I also and still love (Maria's Salon). I consider myself very proficient in the OUIDAD system. In early June 2009, I went back to NYC for a wedding and met with Alex. I had one length hair with a slight angle just in the front. I asked her to keep everything and to do the usual OUIDAD haircut as it had been 6 months since my last carving and slicing. She proceeded to give me the worst haircut of my life which has left a 37 year old mom of a 19 month old crying in the bathroom (haven't done that with my hair since I was 20). The end haircut is fuzzy (not frizzy) and in the sape of a lions mane. It's about as big as that too. I can scare people if I take it out of the 4 barretts I need to keep it down. None of their products work anymore. She put layers in my hair as short as 2 inches from my scalp but did not intertwine them even. The result a 2 length haircut one short ontop of one long. I'm not exaggerating. A disaster. I went to Maria's Salon in MA (certified in the OUIDAD method) and she was just as confused. The only thing she could do was to cut length off and try to blend in the layers. This helped a lot and have a good shape for the haircut but Alex did something to it that will have it be fuzzy until it grows out. I called and complained to Alex and tried to speak to OUIDAD herself twice and got Alex intervening both times. I will write a letter next and I have pictures. I can not imagine what I would have done if this was the first time in this salon. I would have been so confused by all the positive reviews and have thought something was wrong with me. I know how great a OUIDAD cut can be and I feel that something is going amiss and they really need to be aware before doing this to more people.

Pros: Nothing right now

Cons: Changed cutting method that used to work great

Ratings_icons Vincent is AMAZING!

true2you

I've been to Ouidad a number of times but was never completely blown away by my cut until I met Vincent, the only male stylist who works there. I've seen him multiple times now and am always over joyed with the results. In all my life I've never had such a great haircut. I don't love the way they style my hair though. I prefer loose, messier curls. I always know I'll have to redo my hair once I leave the salon, but it's worth it! Curly hair is not easy!

Pros: Best haircut I've ever had.

Cons: Don't love the way they style.

Ratings_icons great products. Terrible cut.

roxannerose

My hair was butchered. I have been going there for two years. The last cut I got was last year, and it was a MESS. The front of my hair was cut to three inches when dry. That back of my hair was long and cut into a sharp V shape. and the top of my hair was thinned out to such a degree that all it managed to do was stand up.

A year later and I am still waiting for my hair to grow back. All the slicing left my hair very thin.

Pros: products

Cons: Cookie cutter styles, terrible cut

Ratings_icons Curly Girls Rejoice!

prlgirl

I was about to book a brazilian straightening treatment and my friend convinced me to give a Ouidad cut a try before processing my hair. I am grateful I did! They were able to accomodate my requested date and not give me the ole "we can squeeze you in 4 weeks from now." The stylist Melissa took her time and asked what I wanted from my haircut. The girl who washed my hair was very sweet and talked about what would help to deep condition my hair (not a product push, just how to apply conditioner properly). Melissa really took her time looking at my hair and how it fell before starting the cut. She cut into it and was able to keep my request of leaving the length. She then styled it and showed me what she was doing and how much product she was using and it never looked better. Having always left a salon with straight hair, it was the first time I was really able to appreciate my hair curly. Loved the cut, style and stylist. Wish it was a tad more affordable but its NY and its specialty, and for how I felt when I left, well worth it! And there was no product push! Am confused by reviews that talk of a coldness- I thought they were professionals. When someone is holding a sharp object near my scalp, I don't need them asking about my latest hook up. I found the staff to be polite and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend to fellow curly haired sisters.

Pros: cut, styling, knowledge of curly hair

Cons: Price but comparable for upscale NY salons

Ratings_icons Moderate Experience, Great Haircut

shrewdsybarite

I found the staff to be unfriendly, bordering on rude or bored. They did not go out of their way to make me feel comfortable or at home. The salon wasn't especially lovely or comfortable. All that said, they gave me a great haircut. I was disappointed that they took so much length off, even after I expressly said I wanted to keep more length. At the end, though, my hair looked so fantastic I forgot all about it. I'll probably go back, though I may continue to visit Devachan (the other curly hair place) for all their other salon services and an occasional luxury hair-cut experience.

Pros: Great haircut.

Cons: Bored-seeming staff, took off more length than I asked for, uncomfortable salon chairs

Ratings_icons Great Place for Curly Hair

mamacitabonita

As a bi-racial woman, it's always been a challenge finding someone who truly understood my hair. I apprehensively made an appointment about 2 years ago, when I started wearing my hair in it's natural state, no more relaxers, that is, and was pleasantly surprised and relieved. Anila has worked wonders, and I'm not kidding when I say that I get complemented almost everyday on my haircut. Go to Anila, she is the best!!!!!

Ratings_icons A curl don't!

scarlett7477

After many bad haircuts for my curly hair, I decided to go for it and try the famous Ouidad salon. I even made an appointment with Ouidad herself. While everyone on the staff was very friendly -- I especially liked her assistant -- and it was fun being in a salon with only fellow curly-haired women, I was ultimately disappointed with my haircuts. I went a total of three times before deciding to move on.

I was trying to grow out my hair for my wedding, but even though I reminded Ouidad of this at every appointment she cut off so much that it set me back to the same length I'd started with. She even admitted this to me on my last visit but said she thought it needed to be shorter than I wanted. She pretty much gave me a short, curly grandma haircut when I was trying to grow some nice long ringlets (which I eventually did after going to another salon).

They also really push their products on you, more than at other salons I've tried. They put so much in my hair that it made it very stiff and crunchy every time.

Pros: Friendly staff, convenient location, pleasant atmosphere

Cons: Bad haircut, pushy with selling products, stylist did not listen

Ratings_icons Great Experience

Marlana50

Well I had a great experience here....the hair cut I received was exactly what I was looking for. I have been to other salons and made to feel uncomfortable or awkward about have such curly hair. But this place made me feel at home. Ayanna was my stylist and she knows what she is doing. I was in and out in an hour. And ever since I have been using their hair products my hair has been sooooo healthy. I have colorist from another salon and she had to remark that this was healthiest my hair looked and felt. And she has been doing my hair for 5 years...I will be back for another cut.

Ratings_icons fast, friendly, great experience

sugarbear616

i took my friend who has kinky-curly hair & is visiting from germany where they don't have really good salons that can do her kind of hair. i called the day of & got an appt w Alex. she wa very sweet & friendly. the whole staff was very nice & for the first time, my friend found a salon that knew exactly what to do with her type of hair. they also gave her a booklet of information & told her about where to find resources online since she lives overseas. we were out in less than an hour &a half. definitely a great place if you have curly hair of any texture, as i saw many different races of women with many different curly textures getting their hair done there.

Pros: quick, friendly, beautiful atmosphere

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Must do for girls withs curls!

tina25

I just went to Ouidad salon this weekend. It was the best hair cut I have ever had. And I have had my share of bad haircuts. I have asked so many hairdressers to take away my huge triangle hair and always walked out with a with the same stupid triangle. But Yesterday I walked out loving my haircut and even better the style. I didn't have to go home and restyle my hair. Amazing. I am always so nervous getting my haircut but my stylist made me feel confortable. I had such a great experience that I thought I would let others know. You must check it out, they really know curls. I love my hair.

Pros: Great haircut, best experience so far.

Cons: nada

Ratings_icons Bad salon. They have LOTS of bad review. They re-listed.

angelab2

Please girls, do not be fooled by the lack of reviews for this salon. OUIDAD is already listed, they only changed their address, probably because of all the bed reviews they have (They've always been on 57th street, the other address might be an office).
Please read the reviews under the other listed OUIDAD (go to "search").
This salon is terrible, and only curly girls know how much time and care it takes to get good curls back to a good lenght and style after a bad cut/color.
My goal is not to be gratuitously mean towards this salon, but they really need to get their act together and render a service. As far as I'm concerned, they STOLE my money.

Pros: None

Cons: Everything
