If you want a magnificent view of New York City, this is the way to go - just don't go during rush hour. When you exit the ferry go to Bay Street and make a right. There's a fantastic Cultural Center which houses the ONLY Chinese Garden in N. America. It's is most definitely worth the walk or a short bus trip. You will pass the Major League ball field and if you walk in their park along the shore you'll get another great view of the city. Also, the most beatuiful time to see New York City from the ferry or the shore of Staten Island is in the evening. You would get a view of Manhattan you'll never forget. You can stand outside on the deck of the ferry on a warm evening. You couldn't ask for more for free.

I lived in New Jersey for several years, close to Manhattan. Whenever I had out-of-town guests, we'd spend a lot of time in the city. The Staten Island Ferry was one of the things I'd always do with them. It's free. You get great views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. That part of Manhattan is very different from other tourist areas. It's free. The panoramas of the Financial District are fantastic. And did I mention that it's free?

The kids and I lve to ride the ferry!! Back in the day when I was newly single and sleeping on my sister's couch, I would take the kids for a ride on the ferry just for something to do. We would people watch, enjoy the sights and get out my sisters hair for a while. In a world where very little is free, this is one of the best ways to commute to NYC.

Lived in SI and commuted for years via the SI Ferry. Have moved away and miss that ride the most. There is nothing prettier than a ride on the ferry as the sun sets as background behind The Statue of Liberty not to mention the spectacular view of Manhattan. If you are into taking photos this is one of the best places to do it!

it was a nice suprise to see such a famous attraction at a price I could afford. Everyone told us before we left Colorado not to look at anyone or dont talk to anyone. I met two of the nicest people while taking the ferry. We laughed all the way to the island. Then tourists got back on and no one wanted to even chat. NYers are awesome and their city is second to none. Take the ferry and see miss liberty on the ferry and save some $$$$.

I never thought just taking the ferry would be so much fun! It was relaxing and not at all crowded, and had great views and a nice breeze. I felt like just taking it back and forth for awhile...with a book and a lunch this would be ideal.

You pile on, get on the side for the best viewing of the Statue of Liberty, you "sail" away, floating across the historic Upper Bay of New York Harbor, and the gulls fly along, and then there's Lady Liberty, and the tall, tall buildings of lower Manhattan, and you reach Staten Island and race back around to get on the ferry, and slide back, trying to determine what's Governor's Island and what's Brooklyn, and imagining Henry Hudson in this very spot, heading north towards the river that would one day bear his name, and the shores are covered in trees, trees, trees, as the canoes of the friendly natives paddle out in greeting.

It's the best bang for your buck because it's free and it only takes an hour to do! I like to take visitors out on the Ferry because it you want to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island but don't want to take up most of the day to do it, then the Ferry has what you're looking for. It really does have the best view for taking a pic of Lady Liberty. And on the return trip the view of lower Manhattan is just the best. A Must-Do!

Nothing can beat a free ride that brings you across NY Harbor and within sight of The Statue of Liberty. It is the best bargain on the planet.

The Staten Island ferry is the best free attraction in New York.

Caught the ferry around midnight in April, it was cold but you had to stand outside to take in all the sights on Manhatten.

Visitors to New York City should grab a lunch from one of the many buffet-style take-out delicatessens in lower Manhattan, then walk down and take a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry. It is a twenty minute ride to Staten Island, and twenty minutes back to Manhattan.

You can have a filling, yet inexpensive lunch, sit and rest your feet for an hour, and see some spectacular views of Brooklyn, Staten Island, New Jersey, Governor's Island, Manhattan, and the Statue of Liberty - all for free!

(The biggest mistake tourists can make is taking the boat ride to the Statue of Liberty. It is long, costly, and will not meet your expectations.)

Why wait in long lines and pay money to go to Liberty Island when you can't even go to the top of the statue? The Staten Island Ferry runs often, provides great views of lower manhattan and the Statue of Liberty and is FREE.

I've ridden the ferry several times, but have never gotten off and explored Staten Island. Bring your out-of-towners down here for the cheapest boat ride of all time -- and it has one of the best views. It's a nice, slow ride -- a nice time to chill out after a rugged day in the city.

The SI ferry is the coolest ferry that is cool to ride in the summertime. You can see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Governor's Island. As a SI chick, i had my friends from other boroughs ride it and they loved it! All tourists have to ride to enjoy the feeling of the ferry in the Big Apple.

Talk about a deal. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this cruise to and from Staten Island is free. It's a great way to spend an afternoon. Running time is just shy of 25 minutes each way and the boat departs every half hour at the least busy time of night. That ensures that the entire journey can be done in an hour at the longest. (The Ferry sticks to its schedule.) So what do you do at the halfway point, for the five minutes between arrival on Staten Island and departure for Manhattan? Well, there's a really cool photo booth at the dock where you can superimpose four different hair-do's on your head. My friend and I spent as much time on the ride back giggling at the silly snapshots as we did admiring the approaching skyline.

Panoramic views of downtown that can only be topped by views from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Can't wait until the new terminal opens in '03.
