I wanted to try out this restaurant ever since I walked by it on 2nd Avenue and saw the cool Vespa outside. I always wanted to ride one, so I tried the restaurant. It has a really pleasant outdoor patio in the back. You cant do summer

The pastas are all homemade and flavorful (go for the orecchiette bolognese!); it's an awesome place to have a quit dinner for two but even a larger party is ok...very warm and cozy.

I've been hear with parents, friends' parents, friends and everyone loves this place. I like that the menu changes each season - like for example, every season there is a scallop dish, but in the winter its a cream scallop dish, while in the warmer months, the dish is lighter. Salads are big enough that you can split with a friend. I'd highly recommend any scallop dish though on the menu.

I was looking for a place to have my 40th B-day dinner party, and my girlfriend came across Vespa in her research. After a couple of emails with Giacomo, one of the owners, we went there for dinner to sample the food and atmosphere. Giacomo took good care of us, bringing us a sampling of food and wine, and everything was really good. So we decided to do the shindig there for about 50 people in the back patio. We worked out a menu with Giacomo and Marlo (the other owner) and everything seemed fine, but I have to say I
remained a little apprehensive, because you never really know how these things work out... Everything turned out perfectly. I really couldn't have been more pleased. The food and the service were great, and the back patio looked magnificent. Giacomo and Marlo were terrific hosts, and did all kinds of mentschy things, serving a picky friend her favorite (off the menu) wine, cooking a vegan friend a special meal and just making sure everyone had a wonderful time. My friends and family are still talking about what a wonderful evening it was.

I've lived in NYC for almost 20 years now and have been to hundreds of restaurants in the city. In terms of the quality of food, service and atmosphere, not to mention that neighborhood atmosphere where the owners are on hand to make sure everything is perfect, nothing compares to Vespa. We will going back for many years to come...

My husband and I went to Vespa for the first time Sunday evening. The food was outstanding and the service was wonderful. I have a food allergy that unfortunately makes it hard for me to eat Italian food but Vespa cooked everything perfectly. When a problem did occur the female manager Angela handled the situation appropriately and professionally. My husband and I strongly disagree with another reviewer who claimed that the female manager was rude and not professional. We were treated great by her and all the staff. We would recommend Vespa to anyone and we look forward to going back.

I can not tell you how much I love going to Vespa when I am in town visiting my sister. Whenever she knows I am coming in she calls and makes a reservation. We love to come in around 6:30 to beat the crowd that wants to sit in the Garden. As always we start off our night with either a Vespa Royale or Raspberry Mojito (can't go wrong with either)...The menu changes so we like to try new things so we always talk to the owner and he reccomends some great dishes.. The staff is always helpful and polite when we want something and have a question. As long as my sister lives up here we will always come to visit Vespa when I come into town (probably will come here even if she moves)....

I have to say that I love Vespa, but this past experience put a bad taste in my mouth. My husband and I went to have dinner few days ago and our dinner was ruined by the rude female manager. We were looking to try something new this time around and asked our waiter to clarify some selections, when he couldn't he was nice enough to grab the manager like we asked. There were two managers and the female one came to our table and had a real attitude. My husband couldn't believe the way she was talking to us. Plus our questions were not fully answered. On the way out I told the other manager our experience and I hope that he spread the word about her behavior. If we plan to eat there again I will make sure I don't see that awful manger before I walk in.

Came here for drinks and apps with friends. Got to sit in the garden, which is awesome. Apps were so good we went ahead and ordered dinner. We all had something different, each of which was delicious. I'm still thinking about my cavatelli today!
Our waiter was great, too. Very nice and on top of things. The only bad part of the night was the manager/owner, who was not friendly and was trying to get us out of there as quickly as possible. I ignored him entirely because I'm a paying customer, too.
An added bonus is the HOT male hostess. Trust me, you'll know him when you see him.

Great outdoor dining space..It's much bigger than we expected and was quite busy. The Appetizers were really nice, the Yellow Watermelon & Shrimp were cool on a warm night. The Pastas are a definite plus and they serve them in half orders. The Cocktail list and winelist were well done. We were happy to find them on a summer night.

I went to Vespa with a small group of friends and we requested to sit in the garden. To our horror, they refused to seat us. The front of the restaurant was completely empty so we said we would just sit up front if there was no room. Again they refused to seat us. Little did they know we were a group of successful educated customers that all lived in the neighborhood. It seems this place is the stereotypical Upper East Side establishment that we thought didn't exist anymore, especially in 2008 - in NEW YORK! I've told all my friends, stay far away from this place, at least until they change management.

Fun and Funky! We've been going for almost 5 years (me and the girls..and the occasional date :-( ) Good Food, and Great Service. It's definitlely nice to be recognized when we go (hopefully not because we are too loud..LOL!) Looking forward to trying their new spot...and for when the weather gets warmer!

I have read some of the other reviews and all I can wonder is who is paying these people to write them? The food here was mediocre. The ambience is cheesy and some of it looks as if it was stolen from a corporate chain restaurant. Like an Italian Chillis maybe? The music is not appropriate for dining unless you're drugged out. Our waiter was good but didn't seem to know much about the extensive and impressive wine list.

Great little space for a date. The pastas were right on and unique(hard thing to find these days) and the staff was accomodating enough to split a few things for us so we could try more than we anticipated. We opted to not stay for dessert once the waiter told us about their new space one block down(Vespa Bar?). The manager was great about calling and getting us a table on a busy Saturday night. A quick bite turned into a long pleasant evening.

What a mess. I went to dinner with a friend who lives in the neighborhood. Our waiter was nice but seemed bored. We waited more than 20 minutes for appetizers but we didn't mind much because we had a great table by the window and were chatting. I sent back my fish and I guess that caused alot of problems for this less than busy place. The waiter told me it would be another 20 minutes for my meal so i just grinned and said ok. When it took 30 minutes i asked for a manager. Thats when the fun really began. I was expecting someone to ease my mind and make sure our dinner was taken care of. Wrong. I won't waste too much time here. The manager basically insulted us, gave us attitude even tried some sort of strange flirtation and then tried to kiss our behinds on the way out. He was rude and immature. I think he was french or canadian. No service person should behave that way. I would never waste my money here again.

I have heard mixed reviews on Vespa and figured I would give it a try...every place is worth a shot. I dined at Vespa last night with some friends. I have nothing good to say about this restaurant. We had to wait a 1/2 hour to be seated. I ordered Pennette (pasta, eggplant, mozzarella, and sauce). They screwed my meal up 5 times. By the time they got it right I found the sauce to be extremely spicy and it tasted as if it had come out of a can. My friend ordered tuna and asked for it to be rare. It came out well done. The staff was extremely rude and I found our waiter's sarcastic personality to be nothing but obnoxious. The atmosphere is definitely ?slightly off? and the tables are on top of one another. The walls are covered with weird collages that one could make. The funny part is the restaurant is selling these so called works of art for $250 a pop. With all of the wonderful restaurants to dine at in NYC don?t bother going to Vespa?I can guarantee you will not be satisfied.

Although the wine selection, decor, and attention from the staff are excellent, I would not recommend this place since they stuck a "coperto" charge on the bill with only some little writing on the menu that there is a "coperto" meaning "cover charge". Italians don't tip as well as Americans - the owners of this place need to realize where they are located and not act so stupid. I will never go here again since they stuck a bogus charge on my bill and then pretended that I wasn't hip enough to know what a "coperto" was and they told be that that's what they do in Italy. Go back to Italy and get your low tips, I tip at least 20% even when the service is not very good, but when someone tries to sneak extra charges on my bill (especially given that this is a wine bar and I had been drinking), I say shame on you - stay away from this pretentious stupid little cheating water hole.

Lets keep this simple and to the point. We were a party of 8 and we all ordered food and drink. The food reminded us all of the Olive Garden in terms of its quality. The service was poor in comparison to restaurants in that area. To top the night off , the main reason for this post: WE WERE ASKED TO HURRY BECAUSE OF OTHER RESERVATIONS. We should have just gone to the Olive Garden.

Vespa lived up to its name on Monday night and everyone in our party felt the sting.

Our reservation for six people proved to be too much for what was otherwise a virtually empty restaurant. After waiting twenty minutes to be seated, we were then pressured to order quickly.

As the evening progressed the service became increasingly hostile. This was brought to a head, when a member of our party sent back a plate of fish.

Then the fireworks really began. There were loud exchanges coming from the impromptu staff meeting, in full view and earshot of the entire restaurant. The playbill for the evening?s performance read "The Soapy Tasting Fish at Table 2?, and was being acted out in full Shakespearean style by all of the ?Vespa Players?. Memorable lines include "She's a liar", and "We all tasted it...it's fine".

Act 2: House lights come up, AC is turned off ? we are still eating dinner.

As the plates were taken from the table we were subjected to one final insult from our waiter:
?There is a lot of food left on your plate Miss , are you sure your done?.....There is still a big chunk left ?.Just checking?.

This is the type of delectable conversation I would expect in the canteen of an offshore oil rig, and needless to say we will not be returning.

On the whole, the food was above average. We enjoyed some delicious White Rioja and the fresh home made pasta was extraordinary, it?s just too bad I left feeling embarrassed for subjecting my guests to such treatment.

Tactile and tactless service bounds in abundance at Vespa.

Had dinner here about a month ago and had a good time. So I brought another friend there for dinner and drinks. The food wasn't as good this time around and the manager on duty was rude and condescending to my friend. He insulted her opinion of her dinner and didn't even discount the dish from our bill. Tacky. Will NEVER go back here again.

Vespa may look inviting from the outside, but once you're
trying to enjoy your drink and some food, forget about having a conversation with
people in your group b/c of the annoyingly LOUD music.

We walked by earlier in the evening and liked the vibe of the place,
but we didn't know that they cranked up the music at night when we returned with
our friends. They need to turn down that music because it RUINS the ambience of
the place. I could barely hear my boyfriend who was sitting right next to me, and I got a
headache from the music. Apparently, management doesn't care about truly making
the place comfortable for its customers.

I have to agree with the reviews posted for this restaurant....the atmosphere was cozy and romantic...the servers were accomodating and friendly....we ate in the outside garden area and it began to rain...the servers made sure that we were covered by the awning and offered several times to move us inside...however, we were content with the ambience of candle light in the garden...The atmosphere was relaxed....they allow smoking at the tables in the garden...so that is always a plus...the only odd thing about this place was that there were caterpillars crawling all over ...but once you got over the inital shock of something crawling on your arm it was fine lol ...the food was delicious and prepared exactly as we ordered it...we will definitely go back.....

The vintage Vespa in front and the replica made of Christmas lights and wire over the garden suggest the charm and character of this cozy restaurant. In particular, the interior garden cafe is a wonderful place to get away from it all and enjoy the somewhat limited menu (but quality over quantity, right?). My only negative about the place is the music: you'll be eating, talking, and drinking at a very loud 120 beats per minute. If only they turned down the bass...

Despite its size, Vespa manages to do what few NYC restaurants do: offer good food/drinks in a wonderful setting with outstanding service without attitude.Went here on a rainy Saturday night we had made a reservation but due to the size of the restaurant/capacity had to wait 45 minutes. At least 4 different managers/hosts came over and apologized for the delay (we didnt even complain). When we got seated they had complimentary appetizers already on the table for us and bought us a round of drinks.
The food was decent for its value (pasta dishes were superb) however wine was overpriced. Vespa is a great neighborhood find and I cant wait to go back when its not raining to sit in the outdoor garden. Note: do not go with a party larger than 4 as there are only 2 tables that can accomodate larger parties. Great date spot!

I went to Vespa Thurs. night and it was my second time. It was better than the first, so I felt I needed to share my great time at Vespa with everyone else. The DJ was playing good music, the company I was with all loved it. Not to mention the fresh striped bass. simple and delicious. Service was just right, warm and friendly. We tried several Vespa cocktails, like the pineapple basil margarita, which we drank all night. Good music, fresh food, awesome staff, and great ambiance. Thanks Vespa, I'll be Back!

Last Saturday, after recommedations from several of my girlfriends, i had my first night at this italian eatery. The atmosphere was inviting and the garden was exceptional -- like a secret that only you want to know about! The raestaurant was packed, but you wouldnt know by the service. From the moment we walked in, we were taken care of - the host, besides from being tall, dark, and handsome, was very accomodating. Although i didnt make a reservation, he had me and my friends a table in less time than it took to finish my rasberry mojito at the bar! Our waiter, was very attentive and helpful also. He made awesome recommendations about the food and wine -- oh and the gnocchi with artichokes and tomatoes is a must try!! The only thing that took away from the relaxing atmosphere of the garden was the hyper active guy -- maybe a manager?? -- who deemd it appropriate to show my girlfriend his abs at least twice in 10 minutes -- amusing but a little much... All in all, good time had by all, food was fresh and service was above average. Will be back soon. Bravo.

My husband and I first visited Vespa this past Sat., 4/21/07... although we had to wait a bit for a table, as they were packed with people, believe me, it was absolutely worth the wait! I'd wait twice as long just to experience that night all over again! Our server, Fernando, was unbelievably attentive, and although he had plently of customers to take care of, he made us feel as if we were his most important patrons. The cuisine is definately a fresh twist on Italian- Mediterranean fare... total sensory overload! Our server also suggested excellent wines that complimented our dinners beautifully. The atmosphere is so relaxed, cozy, and inviting. Unlike most busy restaurants at no point did we ever feel rushed. With the beautiful weather just begining, I can say without a doubt we will be returning very frequently, especially to sit in the garden!

I have been to VESPA many times and everytime it keeps on getting better and better. This restaurant has become a neighborhood favorite and a place that I frequently bring friends visiting from out of town. From my experience at Vespa the staff (including the owner, manager and dining staff) has greeted me with smiles, wanting to please and ensure a statisfying dining expereience. I feel at home at Vespa, maybe other restaurants on the UES should take note...VESPA DOES IT RIGHT!

I was looking forward to having a nice sunday dinner with my boyfriend but that got ruined the minute we entered VESPA. The hostess stood at her station more or less clueless. When she finally decided to acknowledge that we were standing there she had no idea what tables were available until she consulted with her manager. We were seated at decent table , good atmosphere but the mood again was ruined with a terrible waitress who forgot to place part of our order, charged for a TINY plate of olives and 2 pieces of bread and was less than attentive. The food was decent. The best part of the service were the busboys who continually refilled the water glasses..... i would never go back and never recommend this place. Go next door to Elios !!!!

I just moved to the UES from 33 and 8th ave. Was walking the neighborhood with my girlfriend over the weekend. Seen Vespa's front doors open heard good music and saw a cool vespa. Decided to go in, we first just wanted to drink at the bar, after starting our drinks we were offered to sit in their unbelievable garden. They said we can just drink if we want we don't have to eat ( on a busy night very hard to find a restaurant that allows you to do that). And so we did but decided to try their tasting menu, which is little apps. they were delicious. we stayed 4 unexpected hours. were never rushed, tried a couple of Italian after dinner drinks that were recommended by the manager. Great service, food, ambiance, music, and people. Thank You Vespa for welcoming me to the neighborhood, A new regular....

From the outside the atmosphere and menu seemed nice. However, by the time I finally received my food, I wish I never entered the restaurant. Our waitress forgot to place half the order, the management was clueless, and the food was less than desired. Save your time & money by eating somewhere else.

A special Surprise on the Upper East Side. It was my turn to head uptown to meet the girls for dinner, and we all enjoyed the place. I was surprised that is was such a downtown spot for the upper East side. Definate dishes to try are the Cavatelli, scottata. Great drink list too! Only downside was that is was raining and we couldn't sit in the garden :-(

I went to Vespa within the first few weeks of it opening and immediately fell in love with it; the food, atmosphere, and service was wonderful. I had not been to Vespa for a few months, and decided to go out for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend last Friday night. Unfortunately, we did not have a wonderful experience. The host had clearly given out waiter way too many tables, as he was impersonal, hurried, and visibly stressed out ( I don't blame him). I had no problem with the waiter at all, until when I asked for extra sauce on the side of my gnocchi, he informed me that the chef would not do that, because "he is a good chef, and good chefs don't need extra sauce." When I explained that it was no problem and to disregard my request, I merely asked because I enjoy their sauce, he left without saying a word, returned a few moments later and said again "The chef refuses to do it." Why this was necessary, I don't know. The waiter was extremely condescending and rude about the entire thing. I say this in a humble way, but I lived in Europe for awhile, and Italy for quite a long time, and did not enjoy him talking down to me about cuisine, especially because he did not even bother to chill our white wine, merely left it on the table without ice, etc.

My gnocchi arrived swimming in oil (not merely sauce), and was undercooked and oversalted. However, the salad I had before dinner and the dessert was amazing. Not wanting to ruin my own birthday dinner , I did not say anything and decided to let it go for the sake of the night. However, I thought it was important to write a review because I used to be one of the biggest fans of Vespa and unfortunately they have gotten too big for their britches.

My husband and I went to VESPA during the week after work. It was great! I wasn't so jazzed about my meal but the appetizers were fantastic and we said if we return we will just order several appetizers (tappas style) and share. The make this AMAZING drink with Proseco and some raspberry flavored thing insanely tastey. The courtyard is THE place to sit so I suggest you come her when the weather is good for outside dining. This would be an ideal place for a girls lunch outing or a girls fater work dinner or a date place.

Thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Vespa. I tried everything that was ordered at our table (the gnocchi was the best) and was very impressed, especially for such reasonable prices. It didn't hurt that our waiter was gorgeous and a great conversationalist either.

Vespa became mine and my girlfriend's favorite "girl's night out" location. The outdoor area is spacious and private. Our dishes were always amazing, and the cocktails are perfect. The squash blossoms are a must! I was so upset when the colder weather came, because I figured our outdoor dining days were over, but to my surprise they have installed outdoor heaters!! I loved everything about this restaurant and I'm sure you will too!!

We sat in the outdoor garden per a friend's recommendation last week at approx. 9 PM. The lighting was so poor at one point I truly felt I was eating in the dark. We ordered the complete appeteizer which was a little bit of every starter. I truly had difficulty discerning what I was eating. The food, however was fresh and delicious, expected from food needing so little preparation. I followed with a pasta, gnocchi specifically and it was alright. My entree also fell into the so-so category. Not a bad night but for the price, not highly recommended.

I've been to Vespa a few times now and I keep finding myself wanting more. The service is impeccable from the Management to the bus boy. They define the way the service industry in Manhattan should be... above excellence. The food is perfect! Homemade pasta, Mediterranean cuisine that is mouth-watering and good for you. The description on the menu doesn't do justice to the way each bite tastes in your mouth. The bartender makes a mean Mojito. And the ambiance! The garden is so beautiful. Vespa is the all around package for a fantastic dinning experience.

I went with a few friends to this cute establishment which boasted little of its offerings to the passersby. Only with a head-pop and a read of reviews would one know what goodness this small package holds inside--both in ambiance and quality ecclectic dining. I found this Italian restaurant to be far cry from the mediocrity plaguing many Italian restaurants today -- pasta/pesto/pizza. On the contrary, the menu was fraught with savory dishes with a twist -- clearly the chef dabbles in art -- the art of pleasing the palate that is! Great appetizers, main courses, desserts, and wines. Oh, do try the rasberry mojito and the marinated skirt steak. My friend had the scallops -- they were to die for as well. Do make reservations. Do dress sassy. Definitely worth the $$!

I went to Vespa on Friday Night (after researching on citysearch), on an important date for our 1 year anniversary. As promised by the gentelman at the door a wonderful and amazing table in their beautiful garden was delivered. I can't say enough about the garden, not to mention how attentitive and professional the staff was, which complimented the food as well. Unbeleivable squash blossoms, and pork chop with salad. Great music good food, good wine, the best of the upper east side by far, if not NYC! We Will Be BACK!

The outdoor dining area at Vespa is to die for. Its romantic and cozy, and yet brimming with a vibrant and fun crowd. Most places are either romantic but dull or crowded and loud....Vespa is a perfect blend. I love it. And the food is fabulous. For my appetizer I ordered their pan roasted clams. They were delicious - tangy with that right touch of spice. My entree was an old favorite - their Cavatelli - I am still unable to cheat on it and get something new. Its very heavy and you will feel stuffed after the meal, but its one of those things that are bad for you but you just cant say no! I highly recommend a bottle of their 'Barbera d'Asti'. The first sip will wake you up. It's rich, flavorful, and not easy to forget. Great meal! Will keep going back for more!
