My husband has been going to this place for the past 15 years, and me for the past 3...it's the best spicy sashimi salad, spicy tuna tar tar & cani salad in nyc... seriously! the rolls are always very fresh! i think it's a great place to go for sushi, but their food is not fenominal. udons are ok, rai rai ken has way better udons, grilled stuff is good, but not over the top, so if you want a great sushi bite - that's the place!

Marumi is a small restaurant and the place often gets packed. Hence, I do not recommend big groups. They have outdoor seating in the back, which is nice because they have heaters in the winter and it is breezy in the summer. I like to drop by here for some spicy tuna rolls. The rolls are a good size and the prices are reasonable. The bento box is always a good choice as well.

The sushi was good and nothing special. The decor and place settings were nice, but the food was less impressive. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't disgusting or bad, it just didn't make the impression and we're probably not gonna go back.

I took my best friend who visited me from abroad to this place. Food was so so. We ordered sashimi and sushi set. Raw fish were not that f*esh, gave me bl*nd taste. THE W*RST THING EVER WAS THE WAITRE*S. She impolitely asked for more t*ps which I thought I had already given her reasonable amount. Come on I have lived in this country for more than 20 years and I've known the culture. MAN*GER, PLEASE W*RN YOUR STA*F BEFORE YR REST' gets O*T OF BUSIN**S. I WON'T RECO*MEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE.

After about a year in New York, Marumi had remained a mystery to me for too long! We had a party of 5 on a Saturday night and waited almost an hour just to try this little place out (even though when we were seated, the back room was empty). After being seated, we were not presented menus or asked for any drink orders for a long while. Although we had a bad first impression, the food redeemed Marumi from a dismal experience. The fish was super fresh, udon noodles were excellently prepared, and many of their specialty appetizers were delicious. They had a good selection of sake available also. Overall, we had a good time here despite the spotty service and you can't beat the prices either!

In the midst of cheap eats catering to NYU students, MARUMI is like a Zen oasis. A clean, calm, comfortable space serving authentic Japanese food prepared and served by authentic Japanese people. I say this with some surprise and much irony because in New York, Japanese eateries tend to be the creations of Chinese, Korean and Thai restaurateurs. Also a pleasant surprise is the quality of the food: Fresh and flavorful. I say surprise due to the very affordability of the menu. Food of this caliber could easily demand higher prices, but Marumi remains a place of good ol? fashioned standards based in the philosophy of ?good food at good prices.? It?s a simple and sound formula; yet, fast becoming endangered amongst the polarities of ever-increasing fast-food chains and the eating palaces of the new Time Warner Center. On a recent visit, Marumi?s Una-Don and Mini Chirashi were both delectable. And though the service can be subdued at times, think Zen? Not every server needs to yodel their name, rank and serial number like some misbegotten cheerleader to provide good service. Sometimes, one just wants their miso soup to be served quietly and their sushi to be presented unobtrusively.

I have been coming to Marumi for many year. It is consistantly very good food .
I have eaten at many japanese restaurants in NYC and for the price- you cant beat it.
Also, I travel to Japan often and I can say that they keep the taste similar to what you find
there. Many japanese restaurants make their sauce too sweet to satisfy Americans. It gets crowed so come early or expect to wait.

not so good food plus apparently low-class services. i wonder why this restaurant receives good grade. i won't go there again. i recommend Ushiwakamaru (W. Houston between Sullivan and McDougall) instead.

I'm here for lunch 3 days out of 5. The service is excellent, the fish is extremely fresh, and they have the more decadent cute of tuna (toro), and yellowtail. Nice selection on Sake, and VERY modest prices. Expect a small wait on friday & saturday nights. A+

Marumi lovers constantly crave for that spicy sashimi salad. I don't know what ingredients they put in there but it lures me back there all the time! Everyone must try their spicy sashimi salad. And their soy sauce, it's just different in a good way.

Marumi is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the city, hands down. While there are other Japanese restaurants with better food, Marumi has the delicate balance of high quality food at a reasonable price. Tempura is lightly battered and crisply fried. Sushi fish is sea fresh. Service is attentive and friendly. And the decor is bright, clean and calming. I highly recommend this Japanese restaurant - I visit it at least once a week.

That's funny -- *I* was going to say "my favorite sushi in NYC," too. No joke: I've been coming here for 6 or 7 years, and I've never, ever had a bad meal. Super-fresh fish and great value. No long lines like other places, and no "size overload," just a good, fresh, honest piece of fish. Try two mini-chirashis for a wonderful, simple meal. Fantabstik.
