I was a long-time member of NYSC, but over the past 5 years it has gotten beyond horrible. I work out in the city and in Westchester and all of the clubs are dirty, prices keep going up, even though they have 20 employees sitting around and talking to each other, instead of only paying "necessary" employees. The customer service is also become horrible. The people who work there do not understand that they are there to serve us members/customers. I have noticed that employees are friendly only to "select" people. Which by definition is wrong in every way. They don't understand the old adage "the customer is always right". At this point I would not recommend anyone in the NY area join NYSC. For about the same money they can get better service and experience at some of the more personalized clubs including Equinox.

Pros: Pool, classes, locations

Cons: bad customer service, dirty clubs and locker rooms, very crowded.

I have been a member off and on for a number of years at several NYSC locations. The last time i joined was a year ago. They charged a friends credit card in errror for a mumber of months. It took three trips to the club to get my card charged. Now for the last six month they have been double billing me for someones membership at the Boston Sports Club. I sopke to two people in the Coporate Office and now the Customer Service Manager and its been two months and I still havent received the money back that they took out on my debit card without my authorization. This is how they treat members. They act like they are doing me a favor to give me my money back. I wouldnt trust them with credit card info again.

Completely unprofessional

Just wanted to make public a problem I ran into with this club. I had signed up for 10 personal training sessions with this club for me and my girlfriend. On returning home we felt that we need to reduce the training sessions to 5 sessions. We went back and asked them to reduce it. They agreed and said that it would reflect in a check sent home in four weeks time. However the check never came home - its been over two months.

I have been trying to call these guys -- but they tell me the check is being processed by 'corporate' and its not their responsibility. They never call me back and only respond when I try them a number of times. I have given up and cancelled my membership with these guys. The money is significant - USD 800+ and their response has been casual to very unprofessional. I have written it off and don't expect that it will ever be returned. What kind of organisation is this? Also the managers never claim to be around.

Pros: pool, (some) ok classes

Cons: loud, dirty, lazy staff

equipment is outdated and facilities are in bad shape and not well cleaned.
buyer beware! check the small print very carefully, it's basically impossible to get out of the contract.
also check their BetterBusinessBureau ratings - just miserable.
where's the sportsmanship!?

I unfortunately was a member of the horrid place for two years. The place is filthy. The machines are often broken and and are rarely fixed. There is a rule that one can not workout on a machine for more than twenty minutes. This severely restricts workouts.

Some members lie and spend the whole day on machines. Because so many machines are broken this leads to long lines and angry people.

The place is in a airless basement. The manager of the club is impossible to find and speak to, when there is a problem.

There are a few good classes but you must sign up well in advance. The classes take place in an auxiliary building which is often not air conditioned.

If you do join this rodents nest, sign up for Pilates with Jessie, his class is this gyms only saving grace.

Well I must say New York Sports Club is the worst. There is nothing good I can say of my 2 year experience with them, lack of good equipment ,poor staffing, and worst of all dirty dirty dirty. These clubs should be shut down by the health dept. They should also be invetigated by the eeoc for thier labor practices, Ive never been around more disgruntled employees anywhere. The lack of proffesionalism is mind boggleing, how this club can be considered an industry leader is a sad statement on the entire fitness industry. I had the passport membership and it was rear that I have been to even one lacation in 2 years that had everything working and one more question are they overselling thier memberships? clubs are far to overcrowded. Management is horrible. The GM is usually a kid with no costumer skills who does not know how to speak to people, running the club on a personal power kick. Amazing they are still in buisness.

I've been a NYSC member for 3 years now and started working out at the 76th Street location. Since then I've started going to the 86th Street location and I like it much more. Granted, it's under construction, but they do their best to keep the construction hassle to a minimum. They have tons of classes and the equipment is upto date and there are trainers EVERYWHERE to help you (unlike my 76th St. experience). The trainers are knowledgeable and friendly.

It is very rare I can't get on a machine even though it's frequently packed. I highly recommend the 86th street location. 76th is smaller and the staff is not as friendly. It does have the Simon system, but honestly I'd do the 86th St. Express Line instead.

I've been a member since september and was told I had to join for at least a year. I also was told I was getting a great deal. I know other members who are paying a lot less than I am and are on month to month contracts at NYSC. I felt like they scammed me and now I am stuck there till September 07. At night you have to wait forever for machines. They have a 30 minute limit on them but it is not enforced. There are always machines that are out of order. I have visited other NYSCs and most are much nicer than this one. Also, when I joined they asked if I had any friends interested in recieving a free month. I gave the names of two. The club began calling them 3 times a week for two months. Don't give friends names to them!!

This gym is behind a lot of the other gyms, and shouldn't be, considering it's crowded both on weekdays and weekends, unlike their other branches. It's not unusual to see at least 3-5 machines out of order in one visit or that the heart rate monitors on them don't work properly (which is why I'll never bring my dad - a heart patient- as a guest to use the machines).

Don't bother trying to contact a manager about it - they give you reasons why they can't do anything about it. The staff in general don't watch the gym hogs on the machines, but act like it's one big party. Let's just say the above-moderate membership fee isn't exactly for your benefit. If it wasn't so close to my place, I'd be outta there!

I have been a New York Sports Club member for over a year now, and have been too many of the different Clubs. If you are also a member you know that some of the clubs are much better than others. Everything from floor layout, equiptment, to classes. For someone that uses mostly free weights, this is not their best gym for that. Alot of the equiptpment is outdated and can use an upgrade, and also needs some new plates. These gyms aren't cheap and they should ALL be trying to upgrade whenever possible.
