THE worst service EVER!!! Not accomadating at all. Waiter told me I can't substitute goat cheese for feta.. Ok, no big deal, but when my friend asked to have dressing on the side, waiter said they can't do that? What the hells (kitchen)? That is so simple and they can't do that? Btw, food wasn't impressive.

I came here a last week on a Saturday night. I had a reservation and was told it would be just a few minutes and the next table was mine. Unfortunately someone who appeared to know the owner (and who I overheard didn't have a reservation) was given my table. The hostess was lovely and apologized even though I knew it wasn't her fault. We were finally seated and our waiter was attentive and friendly. Our drinks came promptly and were delicious. Our table shared the crabcake and quesadilla, which was a bit rubbery. Our entrees were better. My filet was perfectly cooked. My husband's lemon sole was light and flakey. Our friends also seemed to enjoy their food. The low point of the evening came when the owner was walking around, and stopped at our table to see how things were. He had clearly been drinking, was slurring his words, and couldn't take the hint that we had no interest in talking to him. He finally stopped bothering us after 10 minutes of painful small talk. We had the chocolate souffle for dessert, and it was as good as everyone says.
Overall, the food and service were probably 3.5 stars, but I advise everyone not to go there. Don't give that man any of your hard earned money. He needs lessons in customer satisfaction.

I loooove 44 & X. It has been my favorite restaurant ever since I moved to the city back in 2001. I live right up the block and my family, friends and I go as often as we can to catch up and enjoy a spectacular, always delicious meal together. I have never had a bad meal there! Never. My favorites are the crab fritter (YUM- I can taste it right now!), the burger with THE BEST fries ever, the wedge...so refreshing, the chopped salad and my all-time favorite comfort dish when I want to treat myself is the filet mignon always cooked to perfection. The short ribs are also delish and so delicate they just melt in your mouth. And don't even get me started on the desserts...the chocolate souffle is to-die-for. No joke. And I'm not even a fan of chocolate! Anytime I bring a new person, he/she is very happy with me. It's perfect for a first date too!

The last time I went for dinner, they had changed their menu slightly (but of course keeping all the best meals from the original menu) so I am super excited to try some more of their dishes. Definitely order a side of the fries or mac 'n cheese for the table, you will not be disappointed. And if it's brunch, go for the French toast for the table...it's a feast both for your eyes and stomach.

So if you are in the neighborhood or at the theater, make a reservation at 44 & X...I'll be the dark-haired girl with a big smile on her face and the filet on her plate. :o)

Oh, and the staff is always very helpful and super fun to look at! The owners have done a great job of picking the best dishes and servers to make any meal one to remember.

I went to 44&X today because a friend and I were catching up before I leave the country for 6 months. i HAD to go one last time before leaving next week. I was telling my friend that I have never taken a bit of something at this restaurant that wasn't delicious. I absolutely adore the MAC and CHEESE! yummmm. The wedge salad is delicious. The filet mignon is always cooked to perfection and brunch there is simply fantastic! The wait staff is friendly, cute, attentive and I've never gone without something to drink--the service is right on!.

I've never been disappointed and can't wait to come back from my trip for another meal!

While wandering in Hells Kitchen last week we stumbled upon this creamy, glowing restaurant.....we were enticed enough to try it. While my friends raved over the Mac and Cheese, as one of the best they have tried, I was enjoying a delicious Caesar Salad.....the mains were wonderful as well, we enjoyed the Talapia, and the crunch on the Fried Chicken was superb. We left this place so happy, we called for a reservation for the following week. We would highly recomend this place..........

Going in, I thought "This place looks good." The hostess was friendly and accommodating. Menu looked decent. The ambiance felt warm. Boy, was I wrong. The food was hit-or-miss: the monkfish was tough, the salad wasn't bad, the cheese in the mac-and-cheese was grainy. The decor was interesting, but didn't make up for the view of the gas station across the street. The killer of the night was the waiter who, while friendly and attentive at first, turned on us halfway through the meal. Plates were thrown onto the table, coffee and dessert were offered in a now-or-never manner, and the check was tackily dropped in front of us. A horrible experience.

Nightmare on Tenth! This was one of the worst experiences ever in NYC! Rudest staff on the planet, and way too expensive. If you are going to charge that much money, at least give me some service without the attitude. The view of the HESS station and gas smell really add to the evening. I can only hope that this place too goes out of business. A group of us went there and we were told by the staff that the AC does not work and has not worked in a long time. Don't you think someone should tell you this in the summer with a large group of people? Then when you ask for anyone's attention about the situation, they used foul language and treated us so poorly. I live in the neighborhood and would go eat out of a garbage can before I'd eat at this place again.
Maybe 10 years ago there weren't too many choices, but now you need to step up your service or someone else will take your customers.
One of their places in the neighborhood has already closed, I can only hope that this place will soon follow. Do not eat here! It's not worth the cost, and it certainlyl lacks in service. Let's help this place close down!

It's been about a year since we've eaten at 44&X...we were longtime patrons of Tenth Avenue Lounge, the precursor of this restaurant, and always enjoyed a nice meal if we found ourselves on the west, west side. Sadly, there must be some major breakdowns in the kitchen and management given how they struggled with a fairly basic dish. We were walk-ins without reservations and seated right away. Service was pretty good w/a friendly young waitress (though I had to ask twice for my drink after having ordered it...still hadn't arrived when appetizers were served) and an attentive bus staff. I started with the lobster taco which I have to say was delicious...my friend had the chopped salad. He then had the turkey meatloaf which was fine...I had the crispy bass with mussel reduction sauce....everything on that plate was overcooked. Fish was like rubber, the sauce overwhelming...even the vegetables were overcooked. I hardly ate anything and when the waitress came to ask how everything was, I told her my honest opinion. She said she was sorry and walked away...no offer to get me something different, nothing...very odd considering how most restaurants will either try to bring you a different dish or do something nice when you end up with a bad meal. With so many other restaurants in the area, I think this was our last visit to 44&X.

44 & X is grossly over-rated. My wife and I went there for an early dinner before theater.
The chairs are cheap plastic. The service is slow, VERY SLOW. Our tall waiter seemed
more interested in sashaying around the restaurant trying to get his butt noticed than
actually waiting on our table. The food was mediocre and not fresh. The fennel salad
which my wife and i shared was a mound of mush. Fennel was rubbery and soaked
in dressing, not at all fresh and crispy. The lobster casserole which my wife had was
$30, and a conglomerate of bland flavors that tried to drown out the few pieces
of lobster. It was clearly prepared days earlier and frozen. It was like eating something
out of the freezer case at Gristede's. My steak was not tender and I asked for medium
well, but it was rare. No time to send it back since we were so pressed for time
due to the lack of good service. at Jersey Boys later, my wife had severe abdominal
pains and we had to leave after the first act. Bad Lobster Casserole? perhaps.
What an awful restaruant. will NEVER go back or recommend. I can only imagine
the good reviews on this site are from employees of the joint.

Always a good time if you can avoid the socially awkward customarily drunk owner who welcomes you with a smile and then tries to give you the boot to make room for more guests. The food is great and people come back over and over but only for the friendly staff who make this place worth visiting. Know for a new spin on American Classics, the menu features such Americana hits as the quesadilla and filet mignon--both American standards.

It's a fun time but the stories are true. I've seen the rodents in the restaurant and there are more than one kind lurking. The biggest one of all owns the place.

Cute, fun neighborhood restaurant with excellent service and food. Made pre-theatre reservations on a Thursday night. Was greeted and seated promptly with friendly service. Scallop appetizer was cooked to perfection, could have had this for main course it was so good! Table had the fabulous, unique meatloaf, to-die-for halibut and the chicken. Both people who had the chicken, said it was the best they ever had. Overall a wonderful dining experience. Oh and the dessert (chocolate mousse) was delicate and sumptous. The eye candy was a nice added bonus :)

Visited here with no expectations and was really blown away. Great service, diverse menu and the food was silly good. Short ribs bested my previous favorite at Dylan Prime, and the blue salad was perhaps the best I've had. $135 before tip got us 4 drinks, 2 appetizers, 2 main dishes, 1 side and 1 dessert. I will be back for sure.

I've eaten here on a few occasions, and every time it seems to be for someone?s birthday - guess that's a good indicator as to the mood of the place; that is if you're going for the hip birthday thing. The food is a mixture of inventive upscale meets down home favorites, with a bit of southern flair ? collard greens are served with many dishes I?ve had. Try the mac&cheese, but if you're only a party of 2, order the app, the main course is a lot of food. The meatloaf wrapped in prosciutto is awesome. And the friend chicken with waffles is artery clogging good. Did have a seafood special once which had a bit too much lime, but in the 4 occasions I?ve eaten there that was the only dish I had which disappointed slightly? They also have a good wine selection with a fair amount of wines offered by the glass? Deserts have been great as well. Had a chocolate tart last time I was there that was perfect. The waiters are very fab, Chelsea boyish, but not snobbish, who offer friendly and professional service. In the spring or summer evenings eat outside if tables are available.

My sister, the true NYC Diva, recommended this fab eatery...she always has the low-down...and she's good! Great wine by the glass list (get the Pinot Noir) as well as fun coctail inventions mix with this eclectic and immaculate gem of a hotspot! And now for the food... we shared a special salad with pears and cheeses. Perfection! However, it was later beat by the giant helping of THE BEST macaroni and cheese ever (sorry, mom)! We also ordered the lemon pepper chicken over divine mashed taters! OMG! We didn't stop there...had to dive into the delish creme brulee (served with a star sugar cookie). We left so content and high on the good food and wine that you better believe we'll be back! YUMMO!

I went there on Sunday for brunch and I expected it to cost a lot more, but I was pleasently surprised when the bill came. As for the meal itself, it was delicious. I had the waffles and my table shared a side of cheese grits. The meal was well done and tasty. The environment was nice and relaxing. We did not feel that they were trying to push us out to make room for others. I only concern is the service as the server could have been more attentive. We did have to ask for more coffee twice. I would go back though.

Conceptually, I love it -- comfort food turned up a notch. But the lack of execution is troubling, especially since they are charging 15 per appetizer and 30 for most entrees. At those prices, I start to expect food and service approaching BLT/Town/Union Square Cafe. I would at least expect it to rival Cookshop (where the average entree is 24). Not the case. The fish consistently tastes frozen. The plates are always super hot, which means that the food has been sitting under a heat lamp. The service is at best average (though I will say the servers are more attractive than they were a year or two ago). The composition of the dishes, while interesting 4 years ago, now seem dated.
It would be a fine restaurant at 10-12 for appetizers and 24-26 for entrees, but at 20% more than that, it is a rip off. There are better restaurants in HK and even better restaurants on 10th avenue now.

I went with a party of four last week and this was the perfect spot. We sat outside, it wasn't too hot, we split a bottle of wine, and had a great time. The food and service were excellent. We each ordered something different so we all got to sample each other's entree, which included the short rib, the chicken breast, and the monk fish. I had never had monk fish before and I would definitely order it again. For dessert it was the chocolate souffle, and it was awesome! This is a great place to go if you're looking for some different twists on traditional American fare.

I went with a party of 4 last week. Our waiter knew we were on a tight pre-theatre schedule so helped us order and served us timely. He was perfectly attentive--and when asked he gave us great menu tips/suggestions. We all had salad or appetizer and a fish entree. I had the Sole which was outstanding-- the perfect light pre-theatre entree. Bartender made a helluva martini, too. Highly recommend!

I've been to 44 & X a few times, each time a very pleasing experience -- good drinks, atmoshpere and decent eats -- that I used to recommend it to others. The other night was dissappointing and atrocious enough to have me never to return (there are enough restaurants in NYC that I should try out anyway, yes?) The food came very delayed; appetizers took 20 minutes. My guess is that it wasn't the kitchen's fault, but the chatty-cathy, chelsea-esqe boy-waiter, gabbing with friends at a nearby table and forgetting to bring out our order on time. The foie gras special was chewy, the mac 'n' cheese unremarkable. My monkfish was overdone, and again, chewy. My guests meals also forgettable. But when it came to the check, we were approached three times. I wish that much attention had been paid to us before we got the check. Alas, I do hope that the non-white-ness of myself and my guests did not color the type of service we received.

Alas, I do hope that the non-white-ness of myself and my guests did not color the type of service we received.

.

last night i went to dinner here again (and it's been a few months since i had last gone), and the place is still great. food is excellent and waiter was pleasant. i always have a wonderful experience at 44 & X (and i also love 44 1/2!).

I echo the other City Search reviews regarding the poor customer service at this restaurant. During my visit, the host was unbelievably rude and arrogant. We arrived on time for our reservation, but when we walked into the restaurant, the host told us that he had given our table away. The host made no effort to rectify his mistake and accommodate our party. Instead, he ignored us and refused to seat our party as other tables became available. I would not recommend making a reservation at this restaurant.

We came in at close of kitchen, but they graciously sat us and served us. The waiter was extraordinary. Very conversational and attentive. Best glass of chardonnay i have had here. I loved this place!

I have been to this restaurant a couple of times and have absolutely loved it. The ambience is so nice and the food is always top of the line. It's a great place to take any sort of group--there is something for everyone. Plus, the bathrooms are gorgeous!

I have attempted to eat at this place during the day on 3 seperate occasions. Once during the week when I walked in and had one person say they were serving and another quickly reply No! The kitchens is closed until 5:30. The second time I tried to return for brunch at 3pm-kitchen closed...my fault I should have called. The 3rd time I arrived at 2:40 and was told the kitchen closed at 2:45. What time do you serve until??? I work in the service industry it's not hard to just stay open and change from lunch or brunch to dinner effortlessly- we do it everyday. Your food is very good but I will not be coming back.

We've gone by the restaurant so often, fascinated by the way it looks - so inviting, quaint... So we finally went there for breakfast one day. Loved the little muffin basket and they happily gave us another basket (we devoured the first basket of muffins). The muffins were small - little crusty which made them very tasty. The brunch food was pretty good...not spectacular but not bad - better than average. However, don't botther getting OJ - it's not fresh and whatever they serve tastes pretty bad.
All in all, it was a lovely experience sitting outdoors and enjoying the weather and good food. It's nto a busy sidewalk which adds to the relaxing feeling.

Best Filet Mignon in the city! Absolutely!!!! Too crowded, better for a dinner PARTY, not a dinner DATE. VERY NOISY!!! A bit too pricy.

My Girlfriend and I dined there on a Friday night and it wassimply wonderful. We had an excellent table outside and it was a beutiful evening, The waiter was friendly and attentive. My salmon tartare app was delicious and spicy as advertised. Our entees (Fried chicken, collard greens & waffles? & horseradish crysted halinut) were fantastic. We had an almond cake desert with fresh berries & figs that was out of this world. I cannot wait to go back and try the other menu items, Great place for a romantic, relaxed date.

I don't know what all the complaining has been about with this place. My husband and I used to frequen this restaurant regularly and after seeing the past few months of reviews - were hesitant to return with friends. I'M GLAD WE WENT BACK! The food was a delicious as ever, the waitstaff was attentive and the ambiance was laid back and relaxing.
Whatever was wrong has been fixed and is back to the place I remember fondly.

Five years ago my wife and I had a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner here. I don't know what happened, but last night was a prettymiserable experience for an upscale restaurant. It took almost half an hour just to recieve appetizers, by which we'd finished our bottle of wine in boredom. We should have ended the night there, because those appetizers were the best part of the meal. Dinner was lackluster to be kind. And I pretty much had to tell the waiter that when dinner is late, you usually comp your guests something...so they gave us another glass of wine. Gee thanks. It even took a long time to get the check. By then I was willing to pay just to leave. Never again!

X DOES NOT MARK "THE SPOT" Horrible...obnoxious... and arrogant...without reason. I could go on forever, but these are the 3 words that best describe 44 & X. Nevermind that the waiters were non-responsive, non-caring and downright rude...the owner is the same.... I guess the apple does not fall far from the tree. I am simply amazed that this restaurant is still in business. We had the most terrible experience there. In addition...when we left, the owner obnoxiously said "I guess this restaurant isn't for you type of people" instead of trying to rectify the situation. The true answer is that this restaurant isn't for people. Don't even think about going. TERRIBLE!!

Took a good friend for a late night dinner...@ 10 p.m. - the restaurant was mostly empty. Waiter came and took order. Did not offer drinks or bread. After 20 minutes were able to order a bottle of wine and asked for water - 20 minutes later the water appeared. When the steak arrived -35 min later the potatoes were freezing cold!! We wanted to bring this to the waiters attention- but she was too busy gossiping w/ the host/ess - terrible service - not once came to see if all ok!! Good Grief Mary!! Work your tip!!!

I make it a point to go to 44 & X at least 3 times a month. I't sabsolutley my favorite restaurant. Sure, sometimes the service is slow, but name a good restaurant in New York that doesn't have the same problem?? I would defintely recommend the Mac and Cheese and the Warm Maine Lobster Crab Cakes. Ooohh!! Don't forget about weekend brunch! The cranberry and walnut mini-muffins are delicious! Highly recommended.

after reading the reviews, i was apprehensive about our experience, but the waiter was so attentive, asking if we had a show, hurrying our order to ensure it was timely. the salads showed up quickly, but after they were removed we waited 30 minutes(!) for our entree without a waiter in sight. abysmal. i have to say the salads were wonderful (expecially the fennel with truffle vinaigrette) and the mac and cheese was to die for, honestly though, not worth it.

After waiting almost 20 minutes for a 1:30 reservation this past Sunday, my party and I gave up and began to walk out the door (not causing a scene, simply minding our own business). We were then followed out by an extremely cocky host (different from who I had previously spoken to) who approached us asking why we were leaving and to please "shut the door, its cold". I explained that we grew tired of waiting and that we already had a reservation. He responded, quite arrogantly, that we had only waited five minutes, to which I responded that it was well longer and that my reservation was for 1:30 (it was now at least 1:50pm). He very rudely said, "well, this is New York"..Skip this place, the food would have to be exceptional to deal with attitude like that!

is what my party and I found at this restuarant, from the host being EXTREMELY rude to the waitress that ignored us to the numerous male waiters too busy checking each other out to notice that we needed menus, etc...
The food was basic brunch fare and okay, we had to ask for refills of coffee and bread, as our waiter was busy chatting at the bar with the bartender. Upon finishing our meal that same waitress that ignored us, suddenly appeared at our table asking if we needed our check, we were finishing our coffee and drinks, yet she was blatantly trying to get us out so that the table could be turned over. I will NEVER go back to this restaurant again.

We dined here last night and were sorely disappointed. True, the service is excellent -- really friendly and the decor is stylish especially for this part of town. But the food is close to awful -- especially at these prices. The chef should try simpler dishes, since he/she obviously cannot handle the ambitious menu they currently serve. None of the flavors melded with each other, the scallops and chicken were overcooked while the vegetable were practically raw (and not in a good sense). The worst offense was the risotto special. I'm not even sure they used the correct rice because the dish tasted more like fried rice than any risotto I've ever eaten. At $20 - $30 an entree you can find better value for your money in many other places around town -- even Hell's Kitchen.

Very good food, nicely presented. I followed the recommendations of other posters here and ordered the scallop appetizer and the filet mignon. Both were excellent. And the fallen chocolate souflee desert was unbelievable...absolutely perfect.

Reminded me that it's worth paying top dollar for very carefully prepared, high quality cooking.

I went to 44 & X with a friend and we had great time and meal. The servers were all attractive, men and women. I admit I was sketched out by the surrounding area, but once inside that all leaves. The menu made it hard for me to decide what to get. I got the ancho chili pork with cheese grits. That was the most amazing meal...ever! I was still craving more the next morning. I got dessert too which was good but I couldn't stop thinking about the pork dish. I am definitely going again and ordering 2 dishes, one for there and one for when I get home!

I routinely bring weekend guests to this stylish spot. I absolutely LOVE the scallop appetizer, and the filet mignon is first rate for a main dish. I go to 44 & X about once a month, and I have always been served with a smile. Their cocktails are consistently excellent. The only bad thing is the view--there's a big ugly gas station across the street.

A couple of friends and I ate dinner there on a weeknight. We loved the decor, even the bathrooms had ambience with candles and beautiful flowers. The waiting staff was so friendly, and food was imaginitive and included comfort food. The short ribs were yummy, and the filet mignon was cooked perfectly and delicious. We also ate the goat cheese ravioli appetizer, and that was delicious too. So good that I am having my next party there.

It's tough to classify its menus into any specific nationality or genre so I'll just say, it is great. The Filet Mignon was one of the best I have has in years and it followed a unique and tasty lobster taco. The atmosphere and intimacy make 44&X an extremely pleasurable experience.

After my 6th visit to this restaurant last Saturday, I must say, it is one of my new favorites. The food is fresh and creative. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The desserts...decadent! It's a great place to eat outdoors in the nice weather, especially for their wonderful Sunday Brunch. Do yourself a favor and try this place, but call ahead, it is getting more popular and a reservation is helpful!

a good place for a casual dinner with friends. this has become one of my favorite spots to hang out at the bar and drink martinis, not only because the atmosphere is energetic and lively, but also becasue the staff are so friendly. it's casual and yet trendy, with a nice, open space and a techno-soundtrack that encourages a lot of conversation and interaction. the food isn't spectacular, but I have yet to be disappointed in anything I've been served, and there's a definite attempt by the kitchen to keep the menu fresh and interesting.
