My 4.5 year old son is currently enrolled in this school, and I have to say, the staff is wonderful with kids. It is a little expensive, but so is everything else in Manhattan.

As far as a hard sell, recently an instructor asked if my son

I've been an adult student at the school for five years. I'm happy with the school, staff and the results. The schedule is terrific, I can take classes that fit in with my work schedule. The teaching staff are trained and experienced. The culture is family-oriented and there is no bullying either by staff or students. The school has a diverse student population about 50/50 male/female. Each student is supported and challenged based on their skill level and ability. Effective techniques are taught clearly and safety is a priority. The curriculum is always being refined. For me this has made for a good experience over the years. I never feel like I am doing the same class over and over again. When I first started mixed martial arts I wasn't sure about how effective it would be. At this school it is effective on several fronts: physical conditioning, self-confidence and self-defense. While I hope to never need the self-defense, I benefit from the physical conditioning and self-confidence aspects every day. At 48 I am in good shape, my doctor has noted both that my weight is good as well as the excellent results on my annual physicals. Self-confidence is harder to measure, but at work I am calmer and more effective at dealing with conflict than I was before I started at Tiger Schulmann's. Some reviewers have commented on the costs associated with the program. For me the costs balance out when I think about what I'm not paying for health problems and for me good health at this stage of my life is a priority. When I signed up I talked with the school manager about what package was right for me. As promotions come up, staff will let me know, but I've never felt pressured to sign on for more than I can afford. In fact, in this school if I felt pressured to do something that wasn't right for me, I'd first check in with what I wasn't doing in my training to let that kind of thinking into my head.

Pros: great instructors, clean, well-equipped facility, friendly

Cons: none

I have been going to the gym my entire life and have never felt this way before about a workout program. The gym has always bored me so I attempted those cardio classes they hold but they too became boring. Tiger schulmanns is a bit more expensive then a gym but you dont waste your money with them because of the results you get, right away! you pay a little more and you really get a workout out while learning real self defense. definitly more effective then any cardio kickboxing class i have ever taken. there are other sudents there that have been there for years, they look really great and are actually kickboxing and even grappling. the instructors are very helpfull and are great motivators. the best thing anyone should do is try out a class themselves and speak to the other students to get a good opinion. i dont know if I will ever be one of their blackbelts but the thought is exciting!

I am a member at the TS school in Manhattan, and have been for several years. I will admit, it is not cheap to train there, but it is not out of reach for the "Average Joe" either....and when it comes down to it, you get what you pay for.
I have been to other martial arts schools and tried other styles, and nothing has come close to the training I receive at Tiger Schulmann's.
1. The instructors are beyond first rate, not only do they motivate you, but they are the real deal! many of them are professional fighters, and all of them do this for a living... what this means, is they teach you what they do now, not what they learned in some seminar 15 years ago...which brings me to number
2. If you are looking to learn the best and most realistic self defense, and who shouldn't know how to defend themselves??, this is what you want to know!!
They have classes for every level, from the beginner female who just wants to get in shape, to the hard core MMA guys who want to train with Professionals!
The bottom line is this place guarantees results, and they deliver!!

When my mother purchased the classes for me in highschool she was told as well as I that the classes will never expire and are for a lifetime. After returning to one of the locations after 8 years the head sensei told me that I have used all my classes up. I remember clearly we signed up for another 100 classes towards the end of my highschool year, and I used up 10 classes at most. When they showed me when the classes were taken I was skeptical because by then I was in college and would not return just go to take some karate classes. I didn't have proof otherwise and apparently there could be no fault in their computer database, because I was told only my card swipe will allow it to be put in the computer system. I would not recommend going to any of the sites. It's a bunch of lies and bs. I want my money back!

Cons: Expensive and dishonest

Initially going into this place...I told myself, "this is the best thing I've done! Its better than a gym! I've lost weight, my skin is better, and I'm happier" But the more I got into it, the more I realized this place was 100% scam..and it started making me miserable.

I went here and finished up my 65 classes. Good thing I got out. The FIRST person selling me these beginner classes never warned me about the upgrade and just told me..."don't worry, its just paying for classes according to the amount of classes you take." So I agreed to the 65 classes...and early into my classes (perhaps into my 15th class) then again...midway into the package (into perhaps by my 38th class) they hassled me into upgrading because "you look good out there, you are getting better...lets get serious." Now, after spending nearly $2,000 on gear plus classes... why would I want to spend another several thousand, when I haven't even finished my first 65. LET ME FINISH MY CLASSES BEFORE YOU BOMBARD ME WITH MORE PAYMENTS. THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNICATION. ALL OF THESE "JOSHUS" ARE. They don't tell you specifically what you are getting yourself into and except just keep telling you...YOU WILL SAVE MONEY. Beware of item purchases because they will somehow dupe you into purchasing more gear claiming "you are getting really good...I want to move you up!" They say buy the grappling shirt one time. Then the gloves another time. Then more gear another time. Why not tell you at once, "here is the gear you need if you are going to be serious about it...buy it at once...shipping will be cheaper." Gear must be at least...$400 on top of the classes.

Back to the upgrade...they claim its saving me money...but its not wrong for customers to be upset about spending THOUSANDS of dollars in a handful of months. Upgrading wasn't to like another 65 classes, it jumped to 200+ claiming 50 of the classes were free. Okay, BS...I'd rather take the 150 classes. The 200+ classes was almost $4000 and when I didn't want to pay upfront, I got some serious attitude. I got the word "WHY" thrown in my face....and no customer should feel the need to answer to someone on WHY they don't want to pay. Being disrespectful, pushy, mean, fake, and dishonest is why! You can't bully customers into giving you money! Look, I'm sorry to be so harsh...but this place is a scam when it comes to money. Money totally over powers their "morals." I'm glad I got out at 65...get out while you can. I also felt that the instructors knew that I wasn't willing to pay and were giving me a weird look. For my remaining classes...I felt very uncomfortable and it was very upsetting. Places like this should be about respect, honesty, commitment, a location of comfort to come too after a long days work, and should be a friendly atmosphere. Instead it was a place of lack of respect from some people, dishonesty, shadiness, commitment by force, also a location of discomfort, and a very fake atmosphere. After discussing with other "students" in this "school.." I wasn't the only one who felt this way. Be forewarned...this place NEEDS to change their habits...or sooner or later more and more people are going to drop because clearly they don't want our money. They will keep preying the 2 week trial customers and force them into the same situation I was in...

Cons: SCAM. SCAM. SCAM.

they are like a expensive private school in NYC. I don't understand why we need to pay that much money. They don't even have those expensive gym gears. They want us to buy so many things too. This place need to change their business way.

Tiger Schulman's in Chelsea preys on peoples vanity about their children. People bring their sweet little chickadees in & watch them through the glass believing that there's no one better than their offspring. Then the vultures come down (Tiger Schulman employees) and prey on the silly parents, telling them how great their kids are ( even the worst looser kids who rather be home sucking their thumbs & picking their noses). They tell the parents how talented their kids are in Karate and that they're ready to go to the next level of training. Most of the parents so desperatly need to be told such lies about their children and so desperately want to believe the lies. These blinded by love parents then dish out the bucks to enroll their children in much more frequent and expensive Tiger Schulman classes. That's the game folks. If you've fallen for it please WAKE UP and smell the coffee. Your child is not the special talented one being singled out, the Tiger Schulman employees try to pull this scam with all the kids that come in to Tiger Schulmans. It's all about getting your money. Love your children but be REALISTIC about their talents and don't let people fool you by using the little person you love the most.

This place is a racket. Pure and simple. We joined this gym over and above the objections of a good friend of ours who said they're rip-off artists. To be honest, the classes are probably worth the one star we gave; there's a lot of one-on-one attention to detail and while the focus is on self-defense, you get a great workout and some discipline too.
We began having issues when, after suddenly having to move, we reconsidered committing to a $300 a month plan. You're granted 30 days' grace period during which you can withdraw without penalty. When, two weeks into our contract, we tried to withdraw, we were continually put off. You'll be told you have to talk to somebody who's not in just now. Finally, after another two weeks, on the 30th day, we had to go by in person and sign some (in retrospect, rather suspect) paperwork. Suspect meaning there's no date, no official letterhead, just a blank piece of paper, really.
Not only did that paperwork never get filed (forcing us to go through our bank for a fraudulent charge) they charged us for two more months, over 30 days AFTER we cancelled. At this point we're three months into this and are owed over a thousand dollars. Take your business elsewhere.
Oh, PS, if you want to call their corporate offices or their customer service department, don't waste your time. They don't have one.
