The ingredients used in the offerings at the buffet are fantastic and everything is usually delicious and more or less healthy.

The only con about this place is that the lines around the buffet at lunch are about 3 people deep and it gets VERY pushy. They also run out of food a lot and when a new plate is put down it's like bees descending on a hive.

The pricing for lunch is moderate to pricey...but very worth it.

Overall, worth the lunch crowd push or just wait until 230ish and have a pleasant dining experience.

Also, the dining areas is nice and in a seperate room from the buffet which is nice - limits the noise.

Cons: Pushy/Crowded at Lunch

Truly fantastic oatmeal scone - a little moist, a little sweet. yum!

Check it out! and if you're eating in, ask for the food and drink on ceramic!

This is my first ever review for a restaurant, but after a terrible experience at dishes, I felt compelled to take the time to leave it.

I was at dishes today to pick up an order of their asian noodle soups (something I've ordered and enjoyed before). Returned to work, opened up the salad portion of the order and was shocked and disgusted to find a live (and moving) 2 inch-long slug in it!!!

This horrible experience will probably put me off Dishes permanently, but I wanted to share my experience as a caution to other Citysearch readers.

I have been here a few times. The food is adequate, but it doesn't make up for the inexcusable lack of customer service. I gave the cashier a twenty for my food and she typed in ten and then argued with me about it when I told her she was incorrect with the change. There was someone in line who saw this and when I tried to address it with the manager he was useless and acted like he could care less. Disgusting behavior.

Pros: Food ok

Cons: The cashiers and the manager are EXTREMELY rude

Every once in awhile I treat myself to lunch at Dishes. I agree with the other reviews - the food is unique, fresh, delicious and plentiful...although expensive worth every penny! However, the service there is the absolute worst in the neighborhood - possibly the city. My favorite moment recently was when I chose my food, PAID for it and sat down in the back. Only to have a manager abruptly come over to me and accuse me (didn't ask or request to see a receipt) of stealing the food. I promptly presented my receipt and he huffed away - no apology or pleasantries exchanged!!! Guess I am a glutten for punishment because I have since returned. My question is that if these horrible things are being reported on a public website, why aren't the owners doing anything about it? It has gotten worse since it opened - not better...shame on you for your arrogance and as the economy wanes you will find that service along with quality food will keep your customers and that people will no longer put up with your abusive staff!!

Pros: Food quality

Cons: People that work there

i went there to many times in summer time and the ac never working. i ask to the employee and the answer they don't want to fix it because of the cost. it is a ashame to keep your hard workers working in such heat all day. if i went there just for luch time it is crazy the long line u have to do and heat. I went there on my lunch hour on the enthusiastic recommendation of a co-worker. I went to get on line for soup and there was no one at the soup station. So I went to the adjoining station and informed the staff about this. So they sent another staff person to man the soup station -- and despite my attempts to get his attention so that I can order my soup, he ignored me. Took other folks' orders after me. Basically left me there standing.

I finally told him, in English AND Spanish, that I had been waiting and why was he ignoring me? He finally took my order.

It's a shame because their food is very delicious, their soups unique. But the rude disrespectful behavior of the staff cuts the overall quality of this establishment.

Dishes' version of Bubble Tea is chopped canned fruit, canned fruit syrup, huge ice cubes, and medium sized tappioca pearls. It cost me $4.50 for one small sized cup. Do NOT recommend if you're looking for good Bubble Tea.

I am just done with Dishes. Been going since they opened - yes they have delicious food - but the service is GOD AWFUL and the jerks that go in there...I don't know who is worse. The "entitled little Park Avenue you know whats" or the cashiers that scream NEXT ...step over...NEXT...step over...! Everyday I get the same thing in my salad and EVERYDAY the price various. Because no one can add or speak english for that matter.

Done with that place. They just lost a lot of business!

Cons: RUDE-CROWDED-WAYYYYY OVERPRICED - terrible Park Avenue Men

Today I have finally lost any desire to return to Dishes. I work right across the street and constantly go here for convienience. This place is sooo overpriced you actually cringe when checking out sometimes. However, the boys behind the counter specifically one is constantly rude to me. The last time he was rude I called him out on it and asked if I had offended him, he replied no. I left counter with salad and put it in the cooler and left without lunch. This time same guy, same crapy service. I asked for blue cheese he gave me literally a scrapping of it when i asked for a little more he actually gave me an additional crumb. Grabbed the salas turned around put in cooler and left. This time NEVER< NEVER to return. They are undoubtably the rudest staff arount DO NOT GO if you have any other options. Salads generally range from 950-16.00 depending on how little you want. Dont go there is you want more then 3 things in your salad b/c it will cost a small fortune. I have to say I am a customer who is NEVER rude NEVER mean spirited and ALWAYS considerate of the people who have to wait on me for a living. I ALWAYS smile and ALWAYS say thank you, I REFUSE to be treated this way when I am paying this much for lettuce.

I can forgive overpriced food and long lines, but I cannot forgive horrible customer service. Not only do the staff rush you through your order, but they don't listen and even the managers are unaccommodating! I have been to dishes on 45th several times, and each time my order has been wrong and/or I have had the rudest counter and cashier service I have experienced in mid-town Manhattan (and THAT is saying something). I will NEVER go to this establishment again, not only because I paid $8 for miso soup that tastes like salt water (I can get better soup for $2 around the corner) but also because of the horrifying customer service. I would never recommend this deli to anyone.

This place totally rocks. The menu choices are healthy, numerous, and fresh. I come to NYC on business regularly and I will walk the 8 blocks from my hotel to get breakfast and even lunch whenever time allows. Yum!

Pros: Lots of variety, fresh, and so far - everything's been delicious

Cons: Wicked crowded at lunchtime, not cheap - but you get what you pay for!

Dishes has the best lunch buffet in midtown. It is ridiculously busy during 12-2pm, but certainly worth the time and money spent. The cute manager serves as a nice distraction when you're waiting on line for an inordinate amount of time. I highly recommend it.

My only compliant about Dishes is that there's pretty much no seating if you do want to eat there, but it's packed every single day anyway, so that's probably never going to change. That means it does take a little longer than Pax or something, but there is no comparison in terms of quality of the food. Others may rant that Dishes is too expensive for a quick lunch, but when you look at the alternatives around it, it's probably at most $3 more on average. Everything is fresh, delicious, fairly healthy (save for the chicken tenders, which are incredible), and the menu changes every day. Unlike normal "by-the-pound" restaurants, there's not orange chicken that was cooked in a vat a week ago and reheated this morning. Plus, you save precious mental energy on making the crucial workday decision, "What should I have for lunch today?" because you can get a little bit of everything. The salads are also fresh and delicious, and the baked goods are a huge treat!

A friend recommended this place who had never been there...just heard about it. I wasn't really sure what we were going to find there. Holy cow! What a pleasant surprise!! It was fabulous. Crowded a lunch time, but worth the lines. I will go back!

Pros: Great food. Good selection. Super cool interior

Cons: Very crowded. Small space to have so many people trying to get around each other.

I will pay for good food. That is the only reason I still go to Dishes. But do I enjoy getting my food there....NO! In Grand Central you have 5 people working on one order and it still comes 5 minutes late. And the complete opposite is true on 45th ! There, they ask for you to pay while they are still giving out the change to the person in front of you! And please, I have lived and come from Central Europe...."good and friendly service" is not part of the business vocabulary there. If you are going to hire Central/East Europeans, please train them properly and introduce them to friendly All-American service!!!! I'm still there because I pay $ for quality food, but I know of two people who refuse to go back because of their bad service experiences.

yes the food is a little more expensive than your average mid-town lunch deli's but it is worth it. 1 lb from buffet is about $10. sandwiches are aboutt $9. The soup is a rip-off. The Buffet is awesome. selection changes daily and is super fresh. You can tell they cook qith quality ingredients. i used to eat here everyday until i switched jobs.

Dishes is brightly lit with a modern decor - yes even the food bar - and it's very cheery inside. But the real reason to go there is the food bar. The food is fresh, fresh, fresh. You won't find old-school NYC practices like putting out 3-day old vegetables that smell like the subway or rancorous meat like at common delis. They have exotic concoctions for staples, my fav: coconut crusted chicken fingers (made w/real chicken). They've nice desserts, salads, and sandwiches also. The only downside is cost. The food bar is $8.90/pound, $3 more/pound than most places, but well worth it. It gets a recommended rating for value despite the expense. Be wary of the lunch crowd: 12-2 it is a zoo. I highly recommend you try Dishes. The #1 lunch place without any close #2.

I eat at Dishes once, some times twice daily and pass by Grand Central Market at least twice a week to take food home.
I pray to god never to loose my job in midtown, so every day I can look forward to the food at Dishes.
The previous reviewer obviously has a hidden agenda and does not have a clue. Everyone in my office eats in Dishes and they love it.

The food here is decent for a midtown lunch (which isn't saying much) , but it's pricey for what they give you. The service here was the worst I've ever encountered. Forget the Grand Central Market, they won't pay you any mind there. As for the Grand Central Cafeteria, they get so busy, they don't even make eye contact, throw your food in a bag, snatch your money and hope you don't want anything else. The only reason why such a place is still in business in 3 locations within a 1/2 mile is because we're all too busy during the work day/week to find anything better. I'll never go to this establishment again.

If you're in the area, or are in the mood to take a lunchtime walk, i'd highly recommend lunch at Dishes. The soups are to die for, and the salad area always has amazingly creative dishes that never dissappoint. The sandwiches are also great (although huge, so consider sharing), and are made even better by their grill press. Makes each sandwich taste even better when cooked that way. For lunctime it may be more than you'd want to spend, but after eating at several other places in the area, the prices are not all that different, and you can be assured that it will always be as tasty as can be.

Yes, prices are a bit steep, but the food is fresh and of good quality. From soups (love the pumpkin corn bisque), to sandwiches (gilled cheese is my favorite), to the hot food that's mostly asian influenced, and salads that even include seared tuna, there's something for everyone. And if you have a few extra bucks grab a krispie treat that's as big a a brick on your way to the register. And if you are on a diet, the smoothies are a sweet second choice. Can't wait for their new spot to open in the Grand Central Market.

this place's salad table puts everyone else's to shame. If you get lucky they'll have Moroccan chicken soup, which is awesome. It's a little expensive, but c'est la vie -- where *else* in Midtown are you going to get lunchtime fast food this good?

The dishes here are indeed quite good -- the soups, especially. Yes, the lines can be daunting and the prices a trifle steep (though not if you comparison-shop with nearby midtown eateries), but decent food, plenty of options and staff that keep the lines moving should do much to assuage your fears. A tip for the claustrophobic: offpeak is much, much, much emptier -- you might even get a table.
