The food here was decent, not exceptional by any means. The waiter recites a long, long list of specials, which doesn't change that much from week to week. The reason for so many specials is that they don't have to list the prices... so brace yourself when the check comes. $35 for short ribs with polenta - a price more appropriate for a Michelin starred restaurant in Manhattan, if you ask me. The service in the eatery was fine, but more obsequious than actually hospitable in a fine dining experience. The service in the wine bar, conversely, was very good.

We heard about Trattoria from a friend in the neighborhood. The service is great, the staff are knowledgeable and the meal is an experience. Trattoria was our favorite place to take visiting family. Highly recommended!

I went for my friend's birthday and I have to say, overall, I doubt any of us will ever go back. The food is good but not the best I've ever had. The waitstaff was stiff and pushy about the wine, even though most of us weren't drinking because we drove there. And the manager told my friend that the waitstaff was just being 'attentive.' If that's true, then we don't want their 'attentive' service. We can find better elsewhere.

Maybe because I went there for weekday lunch so that possibly they cut corners or something, but their Zagat score of 27 for food is way overrated. Pizza with olives & anchovy was extremely salty and oily (the center of dough was so soggy that I couldn't fold to hold) while chicken for main dish was so bland that I assumed the chef may have forgotten to put any salt at all (accompanied vegetables were OK, though). I truly wonder if the chef tasted them before serving. Wait staff were attentive and satisfactory, but they cannot make up for disappointing yet high-priced dishes. Maybe I wasn't lucky and picked the wrong day or something, but I highly unlikely would give it a try again.

This restaurant has great Italian food. The pumpkin ravioli's are out of this world, as well as all of there main dishes. The chocolate pizza is the best. The staff is very pleasant, service is "A" one. The food is always very fresh.. Most of the time you do need reservations. The best of all the "CHEF" is the best cook in the world.........

I've been to this restaurant for lunch a few times and have been sadly disappointed each time. Although the food is not bad, it is not very good either and worth the high cost.

I was there recently and ordered the beef carpaccio and was sadly disappointed. It was covered in what I think was olive oil, was a very small quantity, and I could not even taste the meat with all of the oil on it. What is the point of carpaccio if you can not taste the meat? Note - I had a piece of the carpaccio by itself - no condiments or bread.

On the positive side, the fresh bread, and in particular the flat bread was excellent. For the entree I had the buffalo sausage. All I could taste was the black pepper in the sausage. Was the meat in there chicken, beef, pork, veal, buffalo? - I have no idea, all you can taste was black pepper. The portion was quite small, three links and three pieces of broiled potato and string beans. I understand this is lunch but for a $63 dollar lunch (tax, tip incl. 1 glass of house wine, no dessert or coffee) this was way overpriced.

In summary - don't waste your money. Although the service was good and the ambiance is nice look for another location and get a meal that satisfies your palate.

The food is amazing and the atomosphere is great! Live music! Attentive wait staff! Great! But, the best thing by far is the chocolate pizza! Do not skip this desert or you'll be sorry! Big enough to split between a lot of people1

We ate here once and I thought the lasagna was good and freshly prepared the "Garganelli Pomodora" was also good and the gentleman was nice enough to offer serving a 1/2 portion for my guest that did not have a big appetite at the time. Prompt service and attention was apparent during the meal from start to finish.

My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for at least 4 of the 5 years we have been together. We bring friends & family here as well. And our last NY meal before our wedding was here. We consider ourselves "foodies" and are VERY picky about our food & wine when dining out. This is partly because we are pretty good cooks ourselves, so we have high expectations when we dine out. Needless to say, this place is the best italian restaurant there is. We've gone to ones throughout the city and have found one or two other we think are very good as well (Il Cortile, to name one), but this is by far our favorite. Rocco is wonderful & has made me dishes not on the menu, simply because I had a craving. We've NEVER had a dish here that wasn't fabulous, nor has anyone we've ever taken here. We've gone just the 2 of us and with groups as large as 10. not one complaint! From appetizers to the wine (ask Vinnie for a reccomendation) to salads or dessert, you really can't order a bad thing! There are nights you can't get in without a reservation and then there are other nights where you can. Sometimes you have to wait even when you have a reservation, but isn't it nice to know you won't be forced or rushed from your table if you want to dine longer than the restaurant anticipated? Vinnie has also been known to have trays of white and red wine served to anyone waiting for a table...If you want incredible italian food and excellent service, come here. When the day comes we move, this will be the #1 thing we miss about Astoria.

Cons: sometimes can't get a table - but that tells you how good the food is!

I found this restaurant on a website that listed it in the top 10 italian food restaurants in NYC. I have to say, it was good! The service was great. The portions were nice too.

LOL at bad reviews for this place especially the snob trashing the decor. Fancy smansy decor is ok but I go out to eat for the service and food. Our daughter lives in Queens and loves it. She and my wife had eaten there and finally took me. Not only is the food more than delicious, the service is remarkable. One of my favorites anywhere. Can't wait to go back.

I have been to the rest. a couple of times and had to wait for our table. That is one thing that I hate more than anything is waiting 1.2 or more for a table. I have lived in Astoria all of my life and I think that this restaurant is okay, there are so many other ones in Astoria that are much better... The one thing that I do like is the wine bar, their staff is very attentive and friendly. Hell I will skip the restaurant and just go to the wine bar.

Simply put this place is great. There is no place around that I know of like it right now. From the choices on the menu to the unveliveable service. You go here to experience a meal not just eat one. Stay as long as you like you won't be pushed out even when the line is out the door.... No matter how stuffed you think you are - GET SOME DESERT!!

We walked in to Tue night and were surprised to be seated immediately - this restaurant is often full and you are advised to reserve in advanced on Fri and weekend nights. Our server was attentive and professional: after reciting the specials, I asked if he could suggest something specific I craved for - he offered a dish that was just what I wanted, even though it was not on the menu. Wine by the glass is not on the menu either but is available for almost all types. The list of specials is extensive - we ordered two and both were excellent. Portions are medium, just the right size, in my opinion. Service was excellent throughout the dinner, quick and unobtrusive. An excellent restaurant to dine, if you can get a table. Somewhat noisy.

Anyone who gives this restaurant a bad review obviously doesn't know anything about great italian food. I am italian american and have been to italy several times. I go out to eat very regularly and know alot about fine food. This place was reccommended to me by a close firend who live in astoria and who tell us about restaurants that they love all the time. Lets just say that our tastes differ and leave it at that. After going wth them and another couple one night to this restaurant I told them that I had to admit this restaurant is great . You can never make everyone happy all the time, however, this place should satisfy 99 percent of intelligent regular go out to eaters. No doubt about it.

I have been to this restaurant and it's wine bar a number of times. The food, mostly from owner Rocco's Mama is excellent, the waiters and bus boys are great. Rocco however is not that cordial. He seems to pick and choose who he will speak to. Vinny the host more than makes up for what Rocco lacks. He is a pleasure and treats everyone alike and does whatever he can to make your visit a memorable one. They have many specials but whatever you pick whether from the menu or the specials list will be great. Ditto for the wine bar where I have gone often to be greeted by the very friendly manager, Anthony who can answer all your questions about wine choices and makes everyone feel comfortable and welcome. He and the wait staff can suggest the best cheeses to go with the wine selected. Although the wine bar at times gets crowed witht the overflow from the restaurant Anthony never fails to make sure everyone is taken care of and is always cordial and polite.

Really, I just need to reiterate that. I had dinner there with one of my best friends, and we almost passed out our food was so delectable. I ate the Luna Mezza raviolis with incredibly fresh marscapone, and he (of course) ordered the "chocolate pizza". While I sneered at his decision, he smirked as though knowing it would be the greatest chocolate either of us ever tried. The prices were beyond fantastic, the wait and host staff delighted us, and did I mention the food's amazing? Take it from an Italian, go!

It was delicious, our server was very engaged in entertaining our taste for the night. He recommended tasting each item we ordered on its own to get the most out of the flavours. The absolute best was the herb crusted marlin carpaccio with percimion, it was peppery and a delicate texture with burst of sweetness, amazing. The ravioli with apple infused ricotto and butter sage drizzled with truffle oil melted in my mouth. We finished with ostrich on a bed of arugula and ribboned parmesan, the ostrich was juicy and not to heavy after so many courses with a bottle amarone.
what a night, go with someone you love, drink great wine and taste amazing food, what else could want on a perfect date.

we've had the biggest let down twice in a row... we had a party there for an event and we were not treated well. They were not polite and cold. They forgot to bring us the pasta and when they brought it, it was cold and troppo al dente. We are not returning and not recommending this restaurant to anybody.

About a year ago, my boyfriend and I made a reservation to come here. Unfortunately, last minute play tickets caused us to cancel. We then moved further away and just didn't get around to going. Last week, he suggested we go there for our weekly date night. He made a reservation and we were sat right away. The ambience was perfect, like a mix between romantic and familial. The maitre d came over and explained the drill; the waiter would come over and list off the 30+ specials they had for the night. After the waiter listed the choices (I don't know how he remembered them all), we picked an appetizer and our meals. The food was DELICIOUS. The Mezza Luna ravioli with marscapone and pesto was exquisite. The Chicken Paillard which was also very tasty. Throughout the meal the staff was very attentive, making sure we were enjoying ourselves. The chef came out and asked about dessert. He said he'd make us something special. I was stuffed, but I couldn't refuse such a sweet offer. Shortly after, out came a BEAUTIFUL chocolate mousse, sandwiched between layers of chocolate. On top was whipped cream, rose petals, baby's breath, and a ring. I thought it slightly odd that they included jewelry with their desserts, but the dessert was so beautiful I didn't really think twice. Soon, our table was pulled away and I was being proposed to. I was shocked. Apparently, my boyfriend (fiance!) had worked with the restaurant to make it all work. He told me all about it after and I was amazed. He'd looked into about half a dozen restaurants in Manhattan and none had even come close to this one, in either quality of food or in service (and he works at a fine dining restaurant on the upper west side). As soon as he'd walked in to Trattoria L'incontro, they were eager to help him make this night special. And it was an incredible night! Let me say, even if it had been a typical date night, I would still be begging to go back. Try it, it's more than worth a trip!

This is easily one of the worst Italian restaurants I've been to in New York. I rarely dine in Astoria but decided to try this place as it's one of the few recommended by Zagat. First, the decor looks like you are in a cafeteria decorated with a plethora of artificial flowers. They have completely destroyed the sense of intimacy and romance typical to an average Italian restaurant. Second. The food. Horrible. Olive Garden does better. Someone needs to tell the chef that not everything cooked with pasta is Italian. Long list of appetizers and entrees but nothing exciting. The fresh mozzarella must have been purchased from Costco. Last, the service. What started as a spectacular show of well-directed attention ended up in complete desertion. To top it off prices were comparative to a nice restaurant in Manhattan. One of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in New York.

Pros: Only Italian in the area so if you real have to eat Italian

Cons: Food, Ambiance, Prices. But mostly Food.

People are there to serve you the minute you walk into this place. I love the endless specials and options which allows everyone to get something they love for dinner. My fav is the porcini ravs with a truffle cream sauce. Make sure you stop by the wine bar next door before or after your meal and Anthony is always there to take care of you and make sure you try the amazing robiola pizza.

I honestly can't understand the bad reviews. Every time I've gone the service and food have been outstanding. Once we had reservations but it still took them ten minutes to seat us because it was really crowded (in my mind, not a big deal), and they gave us a free bottle of wine to apologize for the wait. The food is really wonderful (try the ostrich), and the waiters I've had seem to enjoy telling their customers about the specials (just stop them when you hear something that sounds good).

I've been to Trattoria L'incontro several times over the past few years and every time I've been very happy with the food. The last time I was there I had the pumpkin ravioli with butter sauce (it was a special) and it was amazing! I've had their risotto, ravioli, several pasta dishes and they've always lived up to my expectations. Yes, they do have a lot of specials but if you hear something you like you can ask them to repeat it. The wait staff tries really hard but they can get distracted by wanting to help so many people at once but I have never been treated badly here. I don't think the owner would allow it. Oh the desserts are really good too. :)

Decided to try this restaurant based on a high rating in Zagats. Arrived for an early dinner on Saturday. The person who seated us was great and he suggested a wine that was excellent. He told us our waiter would be right over to tell us the specials. We sipped our wine and waited more that 20 minutes until the person who seated us noticed we were waiting and signaled a waiter to our table. The waiter started mumbling some of the specials then he stopped and asked us what we were in the mood for as there were 41 specials and he wasn't going to read them all. We were taken aback by his behavior and just ordered something from the menu. We never saw this waiter or any other waiter again until someone came to ask if we wanted coffee or dessert. Here is what we thought of the food we ordered: zuccinni flowerets which were awful and greasy and ravioli which were good, as appetizers. Our main courses were: dover sole ( bland and dry ), veal parmigiana with pasta ( the veal was good but the pasta was chewy and loaded down with red sauce, and lamb ( good ) We decided to skip dessert and get out of this restaurant when the owner came by to ask if everything was okay. We told him about the service and he apologized. To his credit he did seem to care and gave me a $100 gift certificate and suggested I ask for him when I return. I'd have to say " Thanks but no thanks" Bad service and average food will not lure me back to Astoria.

Pros: valet parking

Cons: average food and bad service

I dined here for the second time on Friday 4/13/07 with my husband and our two friends that are sure you cannot get any good food outside of Manhattan. I am positive that they were pleasantly surprised. Our waiter was phenomenal. He told us to close our menus because we should be only ordering the specials. We totally obliged. We ordered four appetizers to share and though I am not at all picky, I wasn't sure what to get since everything sounded so delicious. The waiter was so accommodating; he basically created a dish for me. I could not have been more pleased. When the appetizers came the staff spaced them out perfectly so they did not overlap and they served each of us individually. The food was AMAZING. We pretty much trusted the waiter?s recommendations which were dead on. I would definitely come back to this restaurant and I'm sure my friends will as well. This is an overall must go.

This restaurant used to be something to remeber, NOT anymore. The food is stiil good but not what used to be. May be the chef is running out of ideas or is laying back a bit. Grilled octopus is still good but not what it used to be, the portions are getting smaller and smaller and the prices are higher and higher. We waited for around 30 minutes to get seated and while waiting they gave us wine complimentary. The maitre d was going nuts and you could see that he was not handeling the seating of the reservations very well. The staff is doing a good job but you see it changing constanly, dont uderstand why? This venue had a really good staff. We ordered hte ossobuco and it was chewy. My husband ordered the dover sole and the sauce was blend and my cousin ordered a pasta from the menu the fettucine w shrimp which didn't make the waiter very happy after he recited the list of the specials.Service here used to be top rated not anymore. There are only a couple of waiters that I still recognize and that can service you how they used too.I really like to see this restaurant where it used to be 2-3 years ago. Sorry but you need to do better a cup of cooffe on the house and a glass of wine at the door won't make come back ; ROCCO.

The people who think this restaurant is amazing don't know what they're missing in the better Italian restaurants in the neighorhood (Ponticello, Piccolo Venezia etc.) The staff was nice, except for our waiter; Rocco came out to greet us and gave us free coffee/tea for my fiance's birthday, but that did not make up for the fact that my chicken parmagiana tasted like it had been sitting around all day and reheated for me. There was no sauce on it; the cheese was clearly old, and my fiance's veal was too tough. The waiter essentially rolled his eyes when we asked what the specials were, which are apparently what "makes" this restaurant famous, and then he rushed through them so I just threw up my hands and said - um, ok chicken parm. The ambiance is cold, with tile floors, not like the warm, carpeted and old-style friendly quality of Ponticello and Piccolo V. The dim lighting just makes it hard to see the menu and doesn't add much to the place. Perhaps they had an off night, but chicken parm is pretty basic and should've been better. They also only have beer, wine and soda, which is kind of annoying when you want to have a nice light alcoholic drink (like gin or vodka/tonic) with a heavy dinner. To those current devoted patrons, I say - take a chance on the other side of the Grand Central Parkway; better service and higher quality awaits you.

We went to this trattoria during the week with the family for my sister?s birthday. All of us were very pleased with the service from the moment we walked into the restaurant. The maitre D was very accommodating; our entire party had not yet arrived and the table wasn't ready so he amicably asked if we would like to have a drink while we wait [although they really should have a bar-but it takes away from the "family style" atmosphere]. He was very quick to notice we had finished our first glass and realized the rest of the family had arrived. Before we knew it we had a second round of drinks and the rest of the family was sipping their first round. Shortly thereafter, we were seated. They have over 30 new specials each day; ranging from appetizers, main courses and desserts. It was amazing and very appetizing to hear the waiter script all those specials. Our waiter was excellent [on top of his staff to make sure they are doing the right thing] and very attentive. The portions are very generous. We shared several dishes. The servers were very nice to evenly distribute the appetizers we shared. The main course was phenomenal and the dessert [lemon cheesecake] was absolutely fantastic! It was a great way to end the evening. I highly recommend this restaurant. The food is of very good quality. Good to go on a date, with the family or to have a party.

This place has by far the most impressive menu of any restaurant I have ever been to. The waiter comes over and asks if you would like to hear the specials. He then proceeds to recite at least 20 mouth watering specials from memory. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT ORDERING ANYTHING OFF OF THE REGULAR MENU. ORDER A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT APPETIZERS, SALADS, PASTAS AND MAIN COARSES FROM THE SPECIALS AND SHARE THEM AROUND THE TABLE. THIS WAY YOU GET TO TASTE AND APPECIATE ALL OF THE DIFFERENT TASTES CHEF ROCCO HAS TO OFFER. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE PORTIONS ARE FOR 1 OR 2 PEOPLE SO ORDER A COUPLE OF PLATES IF YOU HAVE MORE PEOPLE IN YOUR PARTY. You can eat lasagna and chicken parmigiano at any italian restaurant. Dont waste your time ordering that stuff here. You wont fully appreciate this restaurant. The decor and embience of this restaurant is awesome. The host whose name I beleive is Vinny is a knowledgable person about the wine and food. He makes you feel at home. Although it is a little tough to get a hold of your server once in a while the food and everything else makes it worth it. My biggest reccomendation would be MAKE A RESERVATION. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET A TABLE JUST WALKING IN ON ANY NIGHT OF THE WEEK.

I had no idea that such a great Italian restaurant was right in my own neck of the woods. The restaurant decor was very nice. Excellent (albeit long) list of daily specials. Wine list was also very good. Overall very happy with the experience and will definetely go back.

Can't believe this place is in my own backyard and I just went for the first time
this weekend. Great food, pleasant/speedy/friendly service. Very comfortable,
lots of variety on the menu - something for everyone. We went for my birthday
and my boyfriend was very pleased.

We'll definitely go back and I highly recommend it.

This restaurant is hands down the best place I've been to for italian food in NYC!!!!! I've been there for simple dinners, my birthday, and occasionally get take out. No matter the occasion the service and the food are always superb! The fact that the restaurant itself has practically doubled in size since they opened is a testament to how great it is. The menu is very original, offering far more than just the usual spagetti and meatballs. It doesn't stop there, they always have a long list of speacials to keep things exciting. The people at this restaurant truley elevate food and hospitality to an artform!!! You have to taste to believe, whether your coming from down the block, manhatten, or even further you will not be disappointed!

I think this restaurant deserves more than appreciation. Astoria's "BOOM" place is the right way to call it.This place from the moment you go in gives you its warmth, first with their flat bread and sun dried tomato paste, with a big list of specials, and with a staff trying to do anything possible just to make sure that you enjoy everything from the moment you go in to the moment you are ready to leave. If you want to try something amazing Prosciuto and Figs is something TASTY,or you can try the pork shank with homeda pasta or even the Wild Boar sausage.Anything that i tryed in this place make me go back everyday. So my recomandation is DON'T THINK TWICE GO AHEAD AND ENJOY!!! You will thank me for the recomandation.

This place never fails to impress me. I've been during the fall/winter and had the pumpkin ravioli and recently tried the green apple ravioli...both are to die for. The bread basket comes with a sundried tomoato dip...its wonderful!!! There are several specials that change daily, which the servers recite from memory...very impressive.
Well worth the trip to Astoria.

I've been eating here since it opened and it's only gotten better. The grilled octopus is sweet and tender, the escarole with white beans is both healthy and delicious, and the pasta dishes are superb. The orrechiette with veal is my personal favorite.

The waiters are very kind and helpful, and I regularly get something on the house - coffee, dessert or a drink. What I love best is they'll make anything I ask for, even if it's not on the menu. My favorite is a dish I've treasured since childhood, linguine with white clam sauce, cooked with pepperoncino.

They have a great selection of wines, and have recently expanded with a Wine Bar around the corner that's accessible through the main dining room. I would recommend early reservations, or going mid-week. Now that word's gotten out, it can be difficult to get in.

I went to Trattoria L'Incontro for the first time yesterday and was quite surprised at how amazing the food was. I read about it in the Zagat's and I just new I had to get there. Everything we ate from the appetizer to the entree was amazing. I would recommend the Risotto with pear and spinach, the lasagna, and the salads. The part of the meal that I found the hardest was to not eat so much of there fabulous bread and sundried tomato paste before the meal.

After reading the positive reviews on here and in the Zagat guide, we had such high hopes for this place. The valet service is a great idea but I think dozens of "specials" is overkill. There are too many to list and everyone we asked for wasn't available (i.e. gemelli pasta, squash/pumpkin stuffed ravioli) The food was mediocre and the service was not good. Maybe we caught the place on an off day but I don't we would beg to differ about the recent 27 they got for food in the 2005 Zagat.

The specials are consistently amazing. Everything has been consistently delicious. I have been there several times with different people and every one was impressed and would go back. The service is definitely top star. They even held my reservation when i was running over twenty minutes late. What really made this place stand out for me was the bill. After hearing all of the specials, you would think they were twice as much as the menu prices (as other places do). Surprisingly, the prices were relatively the same. For this kind of service and food quality i definitly expected to pay at least twice of what the bill actually was. Would definitely recommend.

We've been fans since it opened. I lived in Bologna for three years and this is the first (and so far only) place I've been to where the risotto is comparable.

I don't understand how this is not in the top 10 Italian. Perhaps its Queens address is partly to blame. I don't know. I have been there a few times and it's always an exciting food adventure as the oral menu changes often. It's really hard to beat...I have been to the "top italian" and I am not taking anything away from them, but Tratttoria needs to be included among their ranks! (Oh, great wine list by the way...If you like Tuscans go for the Morellino di Scansano).

This place is so worth visiting. The oral menu is extensive. You basically can name what you want and they will make it for you without charging an arm and a leg for it. They have delicious homemade red pepper dip with their delicious flat bread. you can even buy the dip there. Everyone is friendly and the food selection can't be beat. One problem, the waiters are sometimes hard to understand with their accents.

Even with a reservation, we had to wait a half hour. But it was all worth it. The food is amazing. Even with many people waiting to be seated, we were not rushed at all. Our waiter was fantastic and was willing to recite the specials again for us if we wanted him too. (You'll only know what I mean when you go there.) And having Rocco come over to say "Hi." gives it such a personal touch. But the best part was the bill. For what we had (many bottles of wine), we expected to pay about $100 a piece. What a nice surprise that it was about $60 :-)

I can not say enough of this place. Warm, homemade flatbread, sundried tomato paste to smear over it. I never have to open the menu. We just wait for one of their very informative staff members to recite the special's of the day. We even leave the choice of wine up to them. They really take care of you in this place. I have never had a bad meal yet. Every special occasion is spent here. And regardless of how busy they are, you will never feel rushed. Only problem is being seated..the place is always packed....I suggest early dinner reservation or go during mid-week.

What a wonderful restaurant. A surprising twist on ordinary Italian fare. A special appetizer called Vegetable Carpaccio with Salmon was delicious. The combination of ingredients made this dish so fresh I invisioned myself sitting on a deck on the ocean enjoying a wonderful summer breeze! The baked filet of Trout was sublime. To finish things off have the Cannoli. Fresh pastry tube which was stuffed to order. Crisp and tasty. The wine list was exciting and interesting with some fasinating surprises. The restaurant was very busy, but the service was great. The staff knows all about the food and the Chef is very visible visiting tables and overseeing the dining room. There is culinary art outside of Manhattan and it is in Astoria!

My wife and I found this place by accident after our flight out of LaGuardia was canceled and it has rapidly become one of our favorite restaurants in the entire city and the place we take out-of-towners for nonpareil Italian food made with love. Mussels in bread pot, homemade ravioli filled with things like swordfish and truffles, orange-ginger shrimp and pizzas from a wood-burning oven in back are all recommended. Don't get too comfortable with the menu -- the specials list is usually phenomenal, as long as the actual menu and will typically not set you back more than ordering off the menu. The service is friendly and hyper-efficient. Go, go, go!!!
