Well, maybe not a quite like the great Brooklyn movie palaces like the Loews Kings or the Bklyn Paramount, the Whitman Theatre which is the home of the Cinema part of Brooklyn Center for the Perfoming Arts is more art deco more than the extremely ornate designs of those grand ladies, but it is one of the largest single screen theatres left in Brooklyn where you can see the classics, independents and foreign releases in a spacious hall with real character. And they give you the full flavor of that time when going to the movies was magical, not the chore that it is today. And the massive screen has operating CURTAINS (remember curtains? almost all movie theatres had them before the godzilla-plexes took over the planet). The showmanship is impeccable; many times you get a cartoon and a short subject along with the feature. You can't find a better place to see either an old classic or a new release.

And the Dolby Digital audio system is really something -- you feel the soundtrack as much as hear it. Unfortunately after a long run of many decades, the cinema end of the Brooklyn Center operation no longer has a continuous program; they only run what they call CinEvents -- special restoration prints or a grouping of a director's works or a film with the actors or director in attendance but you have to watch for them -- they are not predictable or regular. They also do Sneak Previews from time to time.

One sour note -- because the theatre has just been renovated, you can't bring popcorn or candy into the hall proper. You can only carry in water bottles. Movies without popcorn? Come on. Other than than, it's really a class act.
