I'd been hearing a lot about the Sangria brunch at Calle Ocho so finally decided to check it out. My first attempt was a random walk in a few weeks back at which time the host said "we are full, you need to book a reservation weeks in advance." Um, ok...sorta high on themselves, but I can make a reservation. So I returned having my name on "the list" and was seated in the dining room. It was certainly a lively scene and the first thing I noticed was the long line of people waiting for glasses to be refilled for the sangria buffet. Then I saw some employee wheeling a taco cart around and ringing a bell. It was certainly interesting. Our waiter looked bored. Am thinking they aren't so keen on no alcohol tabs on their checks. He explained the - "go up and get your glass and free, unlimited sangria" scene. So we placed our order and waited on line. It was very odd. Glasses only came out 2 at a time, so the line was pretty long. The man behind the sangria counter was very nice though and they did have about 6 different types of sangria- the red ones being much stronger. The food was just ok. My friend's dish was cold and my burrito wasn't that great. Thankfully their bread basket is one of the best on the Upper West, so I filled up on bread and sangria. All in all, our bill was super cheap and for all the bread and sangria consumed. Its great for large parties and for those who want to have a fun, drunk brunch.

I was visiting my best friend and happen to locate this rest. on opentable. We had a great time and Chirs, the manager, made our dining experience all the more fun. We happen to go on a night they had $5 mojitos. I don't drink mojitos but really loved these. The fruit juice/puree added to them was really good. The rest. itself is vibrant and has a good fell for either a romantic dinner or a group of friends to hang out. The food flavorful and fresh tasting and has a good variety to choose from. I wish this place was in Atlanta...it would be a regular stop for me.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday tonight based on the reviews on here, and was disappointed. The sangria from the "sangria bar" was terribly watered down - to the point that they all tasted the same. The ceviches were ok, but were extremely skimpy on the seafood (bf had the Huachinga(sp?) ceviche and loved it). I had the Tilapia, it lacked flavor, but the hearts of palm it came with was really good. What was a real downer though, was the fact that this place has a really limited menu to begin with, and they didn't have any of the steak dishes tonight! SUPER annoying, since that is what the b-day boy felt like having. Oh, and the arepas they serve when you first arrive are to die for.

I went to Calle Ocho for my birthday brunch and had a great time. The service was fine, and because of the unlimited Sangria, i didn't want to be rushed outta there anyway. I had bites of all of my friend's dishes and other than the vegetarian polenta dish--it was all delish. I tried most of the different sangrias and they weren't too sweet or watered down. Overall, I must say I will return for "drunk brunch" again.

We first tried Calle Ocho during 'Restaurant Week' and weren't that impressed. The restaurant is nicely designed and spacious, but the food isn't worth the prices. I'm thinking it might be a decent place for Mojitos and appetizers during happy hour in the front lounge part.

went there a few years ago, and for some reason didnt really like it, dont really remember why.
there are enough places in NYC so you dont have to go back to a place you didnt like.
went there for the second time for a friends Bday dinner after another friend didnt stop praising it....
it all started with them not having the only dish i really wanted (what kind of restaurant can not offer two of their dishes on a Saturday night?)
i had to pick a steak. so did 3 other people in the party.
my steak was...odd. very chewy. had to send it back (i really dont do that usually)
20 minutes later, i still had no steak, everyone else was done.
had to cancel my order...
my girlfriend dish was like pure salt, mojitos took forever to come and a friend that asked for extra sauce got it after he was already finished.
the bread at the beginning was amazing! but that's where it ends.
my take? dont bother.

I've had Calle Ocho a few times and I wasn't as impressed as my other friends. If you want to try it, save your money and try it out for dinner. The restaurant is nice and the service good but there's nothing that stands out about the food. It's overrated in my opinion.

waste of time and money. service is slow . restaurant week was awful and food was mediocre. frozen dinners taste better than the food here. it's loud and noisy and needs major improvement. go to new place opening on uws est branch.

Went here last night for restaurant week and was not really impressed..drinks were good but too sweet and expensive. Dinner for restuarant week- appetizer was GREAT! some sort of beef empanada. Dinner I had "plantain encrusted mahi-mahi". well, it was kida just fried fish..on top of a disgusting mix of dried out plaintains mixed with sweet onions and bacon. pretty gross. dessert was great. service was okay, nice people but i have never in my life waited so long for food. i mean, it felt like at least 40 min between appetizers and main course. i probably wouldn't go back.

Went here last night for dinner and had the restaurant dinner menu. The empanada crust was dry and the interior salty and a ground up amalgamation of gosh only knows what. The crusted mahi-mahi mentioned elsewhere was awful. Mrs Pauls could and has done better. The service was well meaning but extremely slow. All in all I would never return to this loud, noisy over priced upper westside restaurant.

Went here with a large group for Summer Restaurant Week. It was great! Yummy Latino food and cocktails, service was great and prompt. Not to mention the salsa and merengue music adds to the feel that you're actually in a restaurant in Latin America. Aside from the food, they provide pan de queso (cheese bread) before your first course and I have to say it was very deliciso! These pan de queso reminded me of home in Ecuador. One misconception that my friends had was that this was a full Cuban restaurant which is not. The menu items listed different dishes from several Latin american countries. Overall I would defintiely come back here with date.

Ate at Calle Ocho during restaurant week and the place was packed! Service was extremely attentive and helpful. I had a lot of questions about the menu and the waitress was very helpful and patient. I ordered the restaurant week menu and had crab stuffed peppers for my app and a crispy snapper for my entree, both were delicious and the portions were extremely generous considering it was restaurant week. For dessert I had my choice of anything off the dessert menu. I choose the banana cake that was served with a sweetened coffee that was incredible. Overall, I had a wonderful time at Calle Ocho, from the mojito's, to the food, to the service, everything was right on!

The friendly staff at Calle ocho complimented the unique flavors of the food so well. My three friends and I had a great experience there Monday night, and will definitely be going back next time we're in the city. Don't know if they have it always but their surf n turf style dish was amazing. The sorbets were really good too.

I've been here a number of times, always making a reservation, and even when it's been crowded, I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes past my reservation time. This place is super fun to go to on a date, or with a group of friends. The food is delicious, but it is really the atmosphere that makes it SO spectacular. Oh, and even if you don't usually eat the bread at restaurants before your meal comes, make sure you try the little rolls at calle ocho!

Te amo con todo de mi corazon...

Any place with not only FREE sangria with brunch but a help yourself sangria BAR? You get some major kudos from this direction. Red on the left. White on the right. And everything's gonna be alright...

The food was fantastic as well. They brought out this basket of fantastic breads, muffins, and small pastries. One was absolutely delicious, oozing the most perfect subtle dulce de leche. Ooooh. I wanted to take home a bunch and I'm not too proud to admit that when the table to our right got up and left leaving most of their basket untouched, I rescued a few select yummy items from the circular file in the kitchen. Cause that, now *that* would be a travesty. Just being a considerate patron...

I had their french toast, which was more like these fabulous cinnamon bun of toast with almost some sort of subtle cream in the interwoven layers. Not sure the details there, but it was absolutely fantastic. I just can't complain about anything here. Accentuated by fabulous salsa music, and we had one fabulous brunch. This one's *definitely* going into high rotation - don't even care that we're talking UWS here people ;-)

Recently visited with a large group and was offered a price fix menu. The choices were of course, limited, but carefully selected and very good.Appetizers. were all fish(calamari, baccalao, shrimp) and were good, calamari being the best.I had the pork, which fell of the bone and tasted excellent, although the broth it was in was salty.Desserts were very good also,as well as drinks.Overall it was a great experience , they handled our large group flawlessly, and service was very good. Their waitstaff was helpful and courteous, very professional.Prices are in the moderate to expensive range. The bar up front gets crowded and one of the bartenders (the taller one)was rude when given a drink order. This is an excellent choice for large groups.

My husband and I decided to chance it and just walk in without reservations since online there was nothing available till 10:30 that evening. We were placed at a cute little table right away and served our appetizers and drinks immediately following. The starters were UNBELIEVABLE and of course the entrees were also just as delish !!! (we ordered the shrimp and lobster ceviche, oyster shooters, sangria , salmon and the pork - which literally feel off the bone once your fork went into the meat !! and finished off with the flan) Really advise for you to try this place and you will go back again !!

My friends and I randomly ended up at Calle Ocho after a stroll in Central park last Monday night, and had an experience that felt like a dream.
To our surprise, even though there wasn?t much traffic outside, the bar was packed by some pretty good looking crowd. We then found out that they serve $5 Mojito and daiquiris every Monday, with complementary Tapas of all sorts, all night. We were there for hours eating and drink the best Mojitos we?ve ever had, and only spent a few $$...The food was so delicious and they just kept bringing more and more?Loved it!
I can?t wait until next Monday.

I recently took my friend to her favorite restaurant, Calle Ocho, for her birthday. Having been there many times she jumped straight into the cocktails!!!! After dinner we were to stuffed for dessert. But, the waitress brought out a chocolate cake with a candle and "Happy Birthday" written on the plate with her name. We never told her our friends name. Now I know why it is her favorite restaurant!

I went to Calle Ocho a few weekends ago with some of my friends. We had read positive reviews and were excited about a fun night out. We were told we would have to wait a few minutes before being sat and could wait in the lounge. Even though they didn't seem too busy, we were left waiting for a while, and my friend went to the host stand to ask about a table. The man at the desk wasn't much help, in fact he seemed like he'd been drinking by the way he was acting. He brushed us off rudely, and we were so put off by this that we decided it was best to leave and look for another place to enjoy our evening.

I heard about Calle Ocho from a friend of mine who had been there several times and enjoyed their Co-Jitos, so i stepped it up and took some friends of mine out for restaurant week, I figured, even if I don't like it, I won't end up spending too much...Well after being in the place for not even 5 minutes I FELL IN LOVE. The bar is cozt with lots of different places to sit, the bartenders didn't act like robots that can make a drink but not tell you what's in it, and once getting back into the dinning room, my expectations continued to be exceeded.
The staff was knowledgable and worked seemlessly with each other, i never felt like i couldn't ask anyone that approached the table for something. I was greated and given my first mojito almost instantly and the food...well, there was too much to choose from. For someone that can't afford fancy restaurants, I didn't feel uncomfortable or looked down on at all...and they definately have a repeat customer out of me! Just give it 5 minutes and you will fall in love.

Must Haves: Raz Mojito, Dulce, Paellla
Could maybe do without: 5 refills of the awesome rolls!

Still my favorite latin place!! Calle Ocho is a place I like to bring all my foodie friends who think all the hip, delicious latin food happens downtown. I''ve been a fan for years, and the food is as consistent as ever, the atmosphere light and festive, and the drinks potent and refreshing. The dining room is amazing but I'm now addicted to the lounge area, where the full menu is available and the music makes you want to get up and dance... fresas sangria is the best, and ask for the arepa-like rolls and black bean spread they serve in the main dining room! Try every ceviche and the bacalao spread. And who knew deep fried green beans could be so tasty?

I went here during New York's Restaurant Week. The wait staff was great. The food is a fusion b/n South American and Latin dishes. It's very good. They have typical dishes of chicken w/rice and beans, but you can get adventureous.

The set-up is great. You can dine in small booths that are located in the beginning of the restaurant for an intimate experience or be seated in the back for a more social experience. This place can accomodate large groups of people. They have U shaped booths that are private and fun for large groups. MAKE A RESERVATION and specify where you want to sit.

They have alcoholic drinks that are made w/real fruit juice. They are very tasty and fresh. Try one for a change from norm.

I went here during New York's Restaurant Week. The wait staff was great. The food is a fusion b/n South American and Latin dishes. It's very good. They have typical dishes of chicken w/rice and beans, but you can get adventureous.

I was looking for a fun place to have my birthday dinner this year that was NOT pretentious, but would have a cool atmosphere and OUTSTANDING food. I read great reviews on Citysearch, Menupages, and New York Magazine about Calle Ocho and decided to try it.

The food was a 10. The service was a 10. The Atmosphere was a 10.

For a good night with your friends to talk and drink and "table dance" to latin music I could not have asked for something classier or more appropriate. The resturant is beautiful, and we had a reservation so we had a fabulous booth with a great view of everything and plenty of space to be comfortable.

When I first walked in I was a LITTLE apprehensive about the PACKED bar (I couldn't even get a drink while I waited for the rest of our party, it was that crowded) but they took us back to the "resturant" part of Calle Ocho and the ambiance was perfect--party energy buzzing at the door, but a nice dinner table with a low murrmur of activity in the background.

The ONLY negative was the total bill, I was shooting to keep it around the $50 mark for everyone (we're only 26, NOT Rockefellers) and it was closer to $70. But no one seemed upset, and to give that some context, we were there for almost 4 hours, had an appetizer, ceviche, entrees, dessert, and lord knows how many daquiris. It was money VERY VERY well spent for a NYC night out---and I would be the first to tell you if I felt otherwise.

If you are prepared to spend some money on the evening (it is 100% worth it) this is the place to go.

We love to eat at amazing NYC resturants, and this is the FIRST place that compelled me to actually log onto the website and leave a review.

Oh, and get the quatro queso empanadas. And the Passion daquiris. Awesome.

Pros: Ambiance, FOOD, Service, Cocktails, Scene, Mood

Cons: Just be prepared to spend some money. Not cheap, but worth it for a great evening

I went to Calle Ocho a couple nights ago and had a blast. The ambience was livacious and entertaining. The food was eclectic and cooked to perfection. I was greeted by the manager and my service was very attentive. I will definitely come back to the Ocho.

Last Saturday I went to Calle Ocho with several girlfriends. We were celebrating a birthday, and we had such an excellent evening! The dining room was totally packed, but our server was still very attentive and took time to answer all of our questions about the menu. All of her appetizer suggestions were perfect, and we loved the cute "domino" cake that we ordered for the birthday girl. I especially loved the Mojitos and you have to try the bacon and date appetizer! This is definitely a great place to celebrate with friends.

The tapas are scrumptiously mouth-watering and the drinks strong enough to get you punch-drunk! Not to mention the attentive, sweet, and polite waitress, Emily who was totally capable of handling a large crowd that overtook the whole front of the restaurant. We enjoyed ourselves in this fun, high-energy restaurant/lounge. If you are looking for great food, great drinks, and accommodative staff, then this is the place for you =)

If you're looking for a themed restaurant and want to party like you're under 25 with an expense account, Calle Ocho is for you. It's arranged to see and be seen, with booming music (happily turned down a notch in the restaurant in the rear) and fruity drinks that I was surprised arrived without paper umbrellas. The paella was good enough but the pork loin was the dryest thing ever, and the steak fillet should never have been let out of the kitchen. The decor is interesting and the service is excellent, but it all feels manufactured, like a visit to Las Vegas or Epcot Center -- not worthy of the space it's taking up in NYC. So if your flight to fantasy land gets cancelled, this will substitute nicely. Otherwise, skip it.

I went to Calle Ocho last night for a late dinner. Our waitress was completely unattentive despite the relatively empty restaurant. She spilled water while pouring into my glass all over the table and did not clean it up so I had to do it myself. The appetizers came out at an alarming speed and were lukewarm. Our drinks had not even made it to the table at that point. After I reminded the waitress to bring us our drinks, the entrees came and they were sub-par at best. From this point on, she stood behind our table, chatting with other staff, and never came by again. My companion and I were so annoyed at this point that we decided to skip dessert and just ask for the check. Another waitress came by and took my credit card off of the table and did not show us the bill. I actually like to see the check before someone goes off to run almost a hundred bucks on my card. This was my second time in the last two weeks (the first time wasn't all that great either) and I will NOT be eating here again. I can pay much less for a better meal with real service.

My fiancee and I recently had dinner at Calle Ocho on a Saturday evening. The experience was unforgettable and the food left us thinking about when we could come back to the restaurant in the future! The service is excellent. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted and seated quickly. I recommend making reservations, especially for a Fri./Sat. night. Once seated, we noticed the lively decor, which definitely makes the place feel like a hip and trendy hangout. You have to try a mojito there. They have a few different ones, but we tried the classic and it was very good. Our meal was A+. We both had the steak, which was one of the best we had ever had. I'm sure it's as good as one from most steakhouses in the city. Even our dessert (Domino) was delicious! If you are looking for great service, incredible food, and all at a trendy place, then "Andale" over to Calle Ocho. You won't be disappointed!

As soon as you go in you feel like you are in South Beach. Nice ecletic decor, contagious music and damn flavorful drinks, great staff (my friend and I got free shots from the bartender). I absolutely had a wonderful time here. Why is it a tease? Because you can't dance! You look around everyone having a good time and shaking some part of their bodies eager to dance. I even asked the bartender why can't people just dance a bit since this place is spacious he mentioned that they don't have a liscense for it and if there's a lot of noise the neighbors would complain, that and the pretty hardwood floors they had :( I will go back to taste the food.

This restaurant is my new favorite. I have been to Calle Ocho twice, and have yet to be disappointed! Entrees are in the $22-$26 range generally, and are exceptional, especially the fish entrees. Amazing mojitos (my personal favorite is the Coconut-lined Co-jito made with Coconut Rum), and at least 7 flavorful concoctions of sangria. A great location near the park, and right by the American Museum of Natural History, so you could really have quite the date.

The environment is great, with pseudo shutters to give you a feel of light pouring in through the ceiling. The wait staff is polite and very on top of things. We received our appetizers within 5 minutes of ordering, and food followed soon after. A lovely place for dinner, and a great way to impress whomever you are with.

-- I recently returned for Monday Mojito Madness, and it was amazing! $5 mojitos and free tapas, EVERY Monday. It starts at 5:30 and goes on all night... how does one beat that?? --

On Monday nights, sit in the bar/lounge area and enjoy $5 drinks and free tapas! Last time we went it was unusually busy and they had run out of snacks, but our waitress tried her best to bring us some over and made up for it with a free shot of some yummy drink! Haven't eaten in the dining room yet, but it looks really nice.

We were in New York for 8 meals, and it was so good we at here twice. The yuca/cheese bread is good plain or with the mole(?) dip. The empanada and calmari are worth remembering. The bistec entree was also very good. No room for desert, so I can't comment on that. The staff was very efficient and friendly. Water service was prompt and discrete, the host and hostess were welcoming, and the waiter was just a nice guy. Next time I'm in town I will be making a visit.

My experience at Calle Ocho was excellent from the beginning to the end. The restaurant is gorgeous and designed perfectly. The lounge is located at the front of the restaurant - a great spot to have drinks and appetizers after work or late night. As you walk in further, you realise the place is bigger than you expect. The main dining room is energetic, colourful and whimsical - v. South American. Our server was excellent - esp. since the restaurant was packed. Went there for restaurant week and actually ordered from that menu! The appetizer, conch fritas was yummy; entree, spicy shrimp with coconut rice (just a hint of coconut - not overwhelming); and the dessert tres leches de mango with calle ocho cafe was unbelievable! I was pleasantly surprised at the whole restaurant and despite the fact that I am never uptown - I will definately make it back here again!

I had a party for about 20 people at Calle Ocho. Never again. The restaurant was practically empty and they were not very attentive. They also didn't credit me for the deposit I left way in advance without rigorous follow-up on my part. This is not an honorable restaurant. The food was very mediocre. I won't be back.

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. The restaurant has great atmosphere: fun, lively, loud. They have a bar/lounge in the front and seat you in the back. But of course, the food is what makes this a great place.
They start you off with yucca cheese bread that are hot, crunchy and soft. I've had it at other places, and they don't compare.
Whether you get meat or fish, you can' go wrong.
There are 1 or 2 vegetarian dishes, but the sides platter has a bit of everything, so you get the full flavor of Latin American food.

They have a really cool little lounge area in the front that is great for drinks and munchys with friends. The restaurant in the back is pretty big with a kinda retro cool decor. The service was great, they ck your coats without charge, except for tip that is. For appetizers, the Chicharron-Crispy Calamari was really good and the Gallitos - Platter of Traditional Costa Rican Soft Tacos with Grilled Beef, Shrimp Enchilado & Chipotle Chicken was to die for. (however, it says for 2 but 6 would be more like it!). The Mariscos Ceviches was to die for (but was small, good for just 1). For the entree I had the Paella - Lobster, Mussels, Clams, Shrimp, Scallops, Chorizo, Chicken, Tomato-Calamari Salad and it was wonderful, but there was no possible way to finish the whole thing, they really give you alot of food for the entree, but it was just as good the next day reheated! I had the Calle Ocho Tropical Daiquiris and it was really yummy. For dessert we had the Caramelo Flan, that was okay, not bad, but not the best.

I chose to have my birthday dinner at Calle Ocho this past Saturday night. I'd been here before and knew what to expect. So I just sat back and watched the rest of my group enjoy.
We were seated right away in a tucked away table (party of 7), the waitress was fun and spunky and the food... the whole group could NOT stop raving. Everyone was MORE than happy with my choice for dinner and I think we will be having many more dinners here in the future.
