If you, like I, are put off going to this place due to the "okay at best" review left by NYC Designer Girl, please take the time to read this review for a much less ego-driven perspective. Anybody that finds it reasonable to go by that moniker doesn't garner much stock from me when it comes to reviewing restaurants. Rant over...

Here's my take. My date and I got here a little later for our meal, and they were very accommodating. Once we were seated, I took in the space and got a feel for the environment. Very clean, very modern white walls in the slightly subterranean room give a feeling of airyness despite the lack of windows. This place is modern without being sparse or harsh - it still feels friendly in it's Spartan minimalism. The music is louder than an average restaurant and is much livelier than the stock Italian music you'll normally get.

Our waiter was a genuine treat. Very friendly, very enthusiastic and very eager to please. We ordered the fried calamari and prosciutto wrapped burrata for apps, and they were both very good. The calamari was crispy without being chewy, the burrata was creamy and worked well with the smoky wrapper. Our mains were both pasta-based. My date had gnocchi with a creamy tomato sauce, and we requested an addition of Vodka to the dish which was duly accommodated. I chose the special: linguine with scallops and rock shrimp. Large portions of steaming food promptly arrived and we wated no time tucking in. My date was Italian and was very happy with the authenticity and taste of her dish. My dish was slightly less impressive. Without a sauce to bind the ingredients, it seemed too dry and dislocated to be impressive. Passable, but I wouldn't order it again.

For dessert, we had Tiramisu and Creme Brulee. The Tiramisu was very tart and lemony, which we didn't expect and didn't much appreciate. The Creme Brulee was decent: the custard was a little too thick, but worked fine with the extra brittle glaze.

Our waiter was always attentive and kept the wine and water topped up. After paying a very reasonable price, we made our way out to our next stop.

In summary, this place isn't supposed to be the most impressive Italian in an already restaurant-soaked area. It provides a moderately priced alternative to the sometimes-cheesy trattorias or over-expensive Italian swankhouses of midtown. Don't try to impress with this place, because it's not that sort of venue. As we were leaving, the music was louder and a couple of girls were dancing near the entrance. It's not a clubby sort of place; I can envision families eating here perfectly comfortable too. And that's exactly what you should take away fro this review: comfort. Enjoy!

Pros: Great selection, excellent service

Cons: Specials were uninspired, one toilet cubicle per sex!

The service was amazing, our waiter's name was Silvio and he was very attentive as was all the waiters. He told us the specials and was very nice and patient. The food was so delicious. We had the best crabcake for appettizers. I would recommend this dish to everyone. I then had the shrimp pasta and it was so fresh. The dessert was amazing as well. I have no complaints. Our table was cleared for each meals we ordered and received new silverwares. I will definetly go back!!

Basso is great for a quick casual meal. The atmosphere is not romantic, as it's just plain decor. The crabcakes are great. So are the lambchops, but the fish is not always fresh, and occasionally, there is a fishy smell to it. I also feel it's overpriced for what it is. But I dine out every evening, and I sometimes prefer a more casual atmosphere, which this is. Recently a patron found a worm in his fish, which really horrified me, as I was at the next table.

I have been to this restaurant twice and every time I have been there, the service is bar none "THE BEST". They make you feel as though you are part of the family to which they wait on you hand and foot. Exemplary Service. The food and presentation is wonderful as I have tried different dishes and they always have made me yearn for more. Wonderful location, with a quaint feeling to it, even if others may feel it is too small. On a scale of 1 to 10 scale I would give Basso 56 a 100!!!!!

Absolutely delicious! The interior of the restaurant is the romantic and you feel you have escaped city life and are in another place. I had the 3 course meal. I cannot describe how delicious each plate was, especially the grilled salmon, I didn't want it to end! The staff was all very attentive and professional. Definitely recommended for any occasion.

We went to this restaurant with another couple and it's definitely an experience. Food's great, of course, but the service is off the hook. The wait staff are incredibly attentive! We ordered several items from the menu, and the one thing that struck me was the lack of veggies. That's my only criticism. The end of the meal, we all needed a walk. Overall, amazing.

I had a relatively uneventful meal here. Not in a bad way, but the service was good, the meal was great, the ambiance was ok. I did have an excellent meal here. We had the calamari to start and then shared a couple of entrees. The salmone and the scottadto alla romana were tender and delicious. It is a bit on the pricey side .The wine list is pretty solid though.

One of my Russian friends and I had a party around the corner from Basso 56 and searched for a restaurant to share a nice dinner with friends. I did citysearch and found Basso 56. Reviews were good so we decided to try it. What can I say? It was fantastic and far above my expectations. All the staff (from the beautiful pleasant hostess to bartender, manager, waiters, bus people) were friendly, helpful without being pushy. Service was outstanding. We didnt have to wait for drinks or food, timing was impecable. Ok, now to food. EVERYTHING we had was tasty (and I travel a lot in Italy and definitely appreciate good food). For appetizers we had freshly grilled calamari salad and caprese. Both were equally delicious and we savored every bite. Next came the main course: we shared crepes stuffed with seafood - unbelievable, and the night's special - lamb shank... meat was so tender and cooked to perfection. Unfortunately we didnt have any room left for desert, but I already told my friends this morning about it and we definitely coming back!!! Menu has such a great selection, I will have to become a regular to taste it all! :) Prices are very reasonable and not outrages, like many restaurants in New York. I highly recommend it for intimate as well as friends/family dinner. The place has it all.

I've been here twice with my girlfriend and plan on going back many more times. The first time was with her mother, and the second time was with my brother, and each time has been nothing short of fantastic.

The service is prompt, attentive, and second to none. The two times we've been here, we've been served by (I believe) the manager, who has this charming and funny way of saying, "Perfect," whenever we tell him the food is delicious. The ambience is also warm and romantic. It makes for a great date or family place.

And, of course, the food is extraordinary! The crabcakes and salad were delicious. We've had the spinach fettucini and a zucchini ravioli, and both were absolutely delicious. They tasted fresh and were cooked to perfection. The entrees are also fairly large and also delicious. My brother had a veal chop that was enormous, fresh, tender, and flavorful. The filet mignon and sirloin steaks were also perfectly marinated and cooked (medium rare, no less).

Suffice it to say, you'd be missing out if you didn't come here at least once.

I have been going to Basso56 for the past few years (back when it was in the LES 'Bassoest'). My last two birthday dinner parties here (latest this past Sat.) have been wonderful. Thank you Alex for Everything! The service is extremely accomodating, friendly, and professional. The atmosphere... elegant, but light.
I wish they still had calamarii fritti on the menu, but the calamari griglia is just as tasty.
I HIGHLY recommend the risotto frutti di mare... it is honestly one of the best I've had. Whenever this dish is on a decent italian menu, i order it, but have not had as much enjoyment eating risotto as I've had at Basso. Just to mention a few others - crab cake appetizers, lobster filled crepes (my boyfriend's favorite), and tira mi su - *Yum*
My friends that I've brought have recommeded this place to their friends, and never fails to impress. Best to make reservations on Friday and Saturday nights.

This is a great place. The host is nice and accomodating. The pasta is fresh and delicious and the whole branzino is amazing. The dinning room is small but it seems to get very packed on most nights. I would recommend this place if you are in the midtownish area and want a nice italian dinner.

After studying the reviews, my husband and I decided to try this Italian restaurant near Times Square. The hostess was very pleasant as she sat us at a quiet corner table. Our disappointment came when our food began to arrive. Service was very quick. We were finished our meal in 1 hour and 15 min. Our reservations were at 8 PM so we were not in a hurry to see a show. I think the staff just wanted to turn the tables. The food was not appetizing. The involtini was tough, the linguini was over done and the crabcake had more filler than crabmeat. Dinner for 2 with 2 cocktails and a bottle of wine was $150 -not bad for NY- but not worth it either. A nice touch was the complimentary lemoncello at the end of the meal. With so many great Italian restaurants in Manhattan, don't go here. Try someplace else.

The restaurant has a very inviting "neighborhood restaurant" feel--very friendly, outstanding service and it feels like most of the people are regulars (including us). Aleks, who manages the front, is outgoing and makes sure the service is incredibly responsive but not "hovering". And, it also has outstanding food (Paulo is creative and talented)--the pastas are fresh and inspired; the veal chop is thick and tender; and the fish is light and perfectly cooked. The burrata (mozzarella and cream) appetizer (a special) is my favorite appetizer in the city. We took a group of about 20 there recently, they had a great time and at least half of them have made a point to tell me that they have gone back already. I know there are a lot of good Italian restaurants in the city, but you combine the great food and great feel to the place, and I honestly think it is the best overall Italian experience in the city.

I have been a fan of Paolo Catini and Basso Est on the lower east side for some time now and so I was very excited to hear that he would be opening a new restaurant uptown very close to where I live. I have been there three times now and each time is better than the last. I Love the Room! It is such an imaginative and creative solution to the traditional New York long narrow ground floor space. The finishes are clean, textural and light, and the space feels spacious and yet accessible and familiar. I particularly like the raw soft wood columns and wine display. Where can I get some of that for my apartment?
The Pastas are just excellent. I love the Tagliolini Con Gamberie Zucchine. It is my absolute favorite pasta dish and here it is done just right. The stripped Bass is also wonderful; I have had it twice and each time it was perfect. The Tirami Su has got to be the best in all of New York. I've had it each time and can't wait to go back and have it again.
In my mind what makes this restaurant so enticing is that it is so beautiful and comfortable with outstanding food, and yet extremely affordable especially when you consider it is located right in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Bravo Chef Catini!

I have tryed Basso56 twice already. Beeing close to work I stoped by for lunch one day and I was truly amazed: for $16 pris fix you get a two course of a generous meal plus coffee and soda. I think the best deal in the area! ( try especially the fish of the day or the ravioli of the day, and you will be surprised). Than I decided to try the place again for dinner now, and it was a real wonderful experience. The place is very clean and cozy. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable; they tell a long list of specials at the table besides the menu. Also great recommendations on the wine list which has a nice extensive selection of all-italian by the glass or on the $28-32 price range bottles. We tryed the artichoke salad and the sliced portobello for the appetizer and they were delicious. Also the papardelle with lamb ragu' sauce and the red snaper special with crab meat crust were amazing. The Tiramisu'(served in the gass) was the best I ever had. They make exellent cappuccinos as well.

If you are looking for good Italian food this is a sure bet. Basso 56 distinguishes itself, however, from the myrid of Italian restaurants in town (not to mention the tourist trap, Patsy's 100 ft away) by creating a friendly and unpretentious environment. The restaurant is undergroud but the light colored walls and open kitchen allows for an open feel. The menu offers more than traditional fair with options such as duck in a balsamic reduction with figs. Only drawback is the concrete interior does not help mute any of the noise in the relatively small space. That being said, the food and the friendly staff outshine the rest.

I decided to try BASSO56 after a beiing a fanatic of their downtown location and I was trully amaized again. Exellent food, beautiful decor and great service. The menu has similarities to the original Basso Est, but we decided to try something different and we weren't dissapointed.
Scamorza cheese with speck appetizer wos exellent, also the Tagliolini pasta with clams and artichokes, not to mention the Pappardelle pasta with lamb ragu sauce. We also tryed a very flavourful Striped bass in a white sauce and at the end the same amazing dessert: crepes with chocolate sauce. We were very pleased with the friendly service who helpt us out to choose a great bottle of wine from their extensive all italian wine list.
I will definitly incourage these peolple for a long time success.
