I can't say how disappointed I was to have a bland, overpriced meal with bad service at the Grocery. I've heard good things about this place for years and was ready to pony up a lot of cash to dine here for a special occasion. The tiny space was full for dinner, so I expected a decent wait for food. I did not expect, however, to wait over an hour for our entrees, or for them to be either tasteless (Monkfish) or candy-sweet (Venison). As nice as the waitress was, it seemed so odd that when, as hungry as I was, I simply couldn't eat a bland plate of fish and left it nearly full in front of me, and the waitress didn't ask whether it was ok or if she could have gotten me something else. She walked by several times when our wine glasses were empty and didn't ask if we wanted to order another glass. This whole time the chef kept popping out to hang with people he knew a few tables away, but didn't bother to stop at our table until the meal was over (and didn't ask how it was). I asked for the check 3 times (in a place with ten tables) before I got it, and when we got up to leave in the middle of a blizzard, the waitress stared at us blankly before asking if she had our coats! You think?! Such a shame to drop $180 for two (without dessert and only a half bottle of wine) for lame service and bland food.

Pros: can't think of any

Cons: Service, Price, Food (in that order)

This was one of the best meals of my life!!! My husband (a meat-eater) and I (a vegan) had a fantastic meal. The chef/owner was extremely accommodating to me. Originally, I ordered the veggie plate, but the chef came out to our table and suggested other possibilities--he made the mushroom risotto sans dairy and it was AMAZING!!! One of the most delicious things I have tasted. I had the veggie plate to start out and it, too, was exceptional. My husband got the duck and LOVED it. We will definitely be back. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to veggies and meat-eaters alike!

We like it very much. We've been to Grocery six times and not once has an item on the menu disappointed. While the room is not particularly comfortable, once you're seated you'll forget about everything except what's on your plate. Solid wine list, knowledgeable staff, friendly owners and an adventurous, ever-changing menu keep us coming back.

I usually never write reviews for restaurants, but after the meal I enjoyed at The Grocery, I felt like I must. My wonderful experience began from the moment I called up to confirm my reservation. The man at the other end of the line was the chef of the restaurant who was incredibly courteous and kind. When I mentioned my food allergies (no gluten or dairy) he proceeded to go through the menu with me and outlined what I could eat, and what he could make ahead of time especially for me. This is a RARE treat indeed for someone with my dietary needs. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated in the back garden area. Unlike other outdoor city dining, this area was verdant and peaceful, basically the exact opposite of city curbside dining which is usually grimy and loud. Our server knew of my dietary restrictions and was kind and accommodating. The chef himself came out twice to serve us dishes he had prepared for us (which we hadn't even ordered) and that I could enjoy. At the end of the meal as I watched my boyfriend eat something that I could not, the waiter brought me a tiny serving of three sorbets and said that the chef didn't want me to just watch my boyfriend enjoy dessert. As someone who has a very difficult time navigating menus and eating food which I don't prepare myself, my evening at The Grocery was a wonderful treat. I cannot emphasize how accommodating and wonderful my meal was. I will definitely be going back again.

My husband & I came for dinner & ate outside in the pretty candle-lit garden. We eat out a lot but this was our first time, the menu was original & exciting and the staff extremely knowledgeable. The food was EXCEPTIONAL - each dish seemed to have an exquisitely crafted array of flavors. The chefs are PERFECTIONISTS & their attention to detail in each mouthful of flavor makes other restaurants / food experiences seem quite clunky!
Extra touches: two small round hot potato croquettes were brought to our table between courses - another perfect little taste!
If you are a true foodie, you will enjoy every minute here.

I'm astounded by some of the bad reviews of this place.
This is our favorite restaurant in Brooklyn, and I grew up here!
The food is always fresh & amazing.
The staff is always very helpful & friendly, if they were rude to you, it was likely because you deserved it.
The wine list is excellent, and Sharon (owner) is very knowledgeable.
Charlie (also owner) prepares fantastic dishes & the menu changes seasonally.
I've literally never had a dish I did not love & neither have any of our guests.
The outdoor garden is so romantic, try to get there before it's too cold.
I promise you - we are foodies - and this place is absolutely worth every penny (and not expensive at all!)
One thing I've noticed from reading reviews of restaurants or vacations is that some people can not enjoy a good meal/vacation, no matter where they are.

Very dependable grocery. No big houpla, but nothin' missing either. Conveniently located, prices pretty normal. Would go again. Great place for a loaf of bread, a stick of butter and a gallon of milk (all you Sesame Street watchers!).

One of my favorites spots to eat in Brooklyn... yummy, original food! The service was decent... it was a little busy and we had to wait but overall our experience was a good one.

There's a reason why reservations are hard to come by. My husband took me here for our wedding anniversary, and I couldn't have been more pleased with his choice. It was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. The food was outstanding. The entrees were interesting, fresh, and delicious and the presentation was thoughtful. I had the scallops, and my husband had the lamb, which was cooked exactly how he requested it. The waitstaff was extremely attentive, very pleasant, and we never felt rushed. The chef came out to check on the patrons, which we felt was a nice personal touch. It's a small restaurant, with a minimalistic atmosphere, but still feels warm and inviting, like you're having dinner at a friend's home. I highly recommend The Grocery.

I went for dinner last Saturday night. The food was amazing- best duck ever!

However, our waitress had major attitude and actually insulted me out of the blue. So weird! I will definitely go back, but I hope I get someone else next time!

It's my understanding that Grocery was recently rated and compared to Le Bernadin and other NYC top spots, which is exactly what peaked my interest. Unfortunately, it is not in the same ballpark. The food is certainly delicious, but not nearly as complex or well thought out as the class in which it is trying to compete. My advice is to go, but don't have such high expectations. This is just a great Brooklyn restaurant, but it's not worth the trip from the city.

The service, food, and wine were adequate but not impressive. Many people have had different experiences, so perhaps it was just a bad night for the chef.

The food is amazing and very fresh. I'd eat her again and again. The decor is simple - not fancy at all, so if you're looking for ambience, this place is pretty casual. But it doesn't matter -- the food is worth a visit

I went to The Grocery with my boyfriend and another couple and it was enough to convince us that we need to venture to Brooklyn for dinner more often. The food was absolutely fantastic - fresh, innovative, satisfying but not make-you-sick-filling. The service was warm, friendly, but not that formal, fake obsequiousness you get at some of the Midtown or Uptown Manhattan restaurants. They brought us some complimentary parsnip soup and some potato croquettes as we perused the menu, and were incredibly helpful and thoughtful in terms of choosing dishes and wines that we would enjoy. The lamb chop, monk fish, and risotto with duck were out of this world. And the desserts (especially the apple cobbler and the chocolate fig cake) were absolutely fantastic. The space is small but comfortable, and allows for an intimate, unhurried feel. Great for a relaxing evening with friends or for a date. The prices weren't cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I was actually the other diner, and in defense of Grizman, the service he sought wasn't "stuffy", but professional. And to say that the service we received is a Brooklyn thing is ridiculous. Go to Saul, the staff is topflight, and the food is just as good, if not better.

Maybe we're being unfair, but even our neighbors called The Grocery ?a bit of a strange place to eat at?, and they too had the same complaints about the horrendous service.

Just my 2 cents.

To Grizman23: I had to post a first time comment after reading your review. I've been eating at the Grocery since moving to Brooklyn in 00. I love the food. Ok the service isn't 4 star, or even 2, but Coble Hill isn't Mid-Town, you don't come here expecting that kind of service. You're new to the neighborhood, so you need to ease out of the mid-town expectations of stuffy professional service. Loyal customers come to the Grocery to eat Charley's creations, we do not hope for stuffy service.

This is our anniversary go-to restaurant. Not too stuffy but with great food, especially in season organic-type stuff. (They give wonderful wine recommendations, too). The outdoor garden is great when it's warm.

I ate at the Grocery many years back before the hoopla. The service then was mess, but the food was good, and I chalked up the unprofessional nature of things under New Restaurant Growing Pains???. December 06. I recently purchased a home in Cobble Hill and on a whim decided to pay The Grocery a 2nd visit?. Much to my dismay it?s still run in unprofessional chaos. The staff seems confused and on edge. When my tablemate asked for a wine recommendation our waitress basically said she didn?t know the wines, and that she?d send over one of the owners. Twenty minutes later the manager arrived. By this point we were already into our appetizers. The rest of the meal was basically the same, chaotic and undisciplined. Our waitress Jane seemed flustered, and apologized profusely for how the owners ran things. In her defense it was obviously she was new to waitressing and unfortunately had picked The Grocery as a starting point?.. Would have thought after 8 years The Grocery would have gotten it?s act together, sadly they have not. It?s a shame the food is good but the need for a good manager has been ignored and the service has suffered.

All of my neighbors in Cobble Hill have been raving about The Grocery. I finally made it there last night. I didnt have a reservation and after a bit of confusion really didn't matter and I was seated on the patio. The service was almost non existent. Our waiter was new and when asked about the wine list admitted he hadn't tried any of them. Other reviewers say they didnt feel rushedperhaps that's because the service was realllllly slow. And not in a comfortable way.in a way like where's my food. 2 of our appetizers were really salty. Although, the beet salad was delicious so was the octopus salad. There was a lot of unnecessary running around that was odd considering how long the food took to come to the table I couldnt figure out what the rush was all about. I probably wont go back.

The Grocery started off with promise. I didn't eat the food, but I had a few glasses of wine, and my friends enjoyed the food and I enjoyed the atmosphere and the service, our waitress was very nice. However, after an unfortunate incident occurred, and we complained to the manager. He told us to never come back to the Grocery instead of being gracious enough to attempt to resolve the situation. For the price, I'd say that the Grocery was ripped us off, and I didn't even eat. Definitely not a place I would ever return to, even if I were the one getting paid.

Amazing. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Unbelievable food, and fabulous choices of dishes, wonderful, attentive, knowledgeable service-without being abrasive or annoying, gorgeous back garden, the owner came over who was cute as a button and so lovely, and again; you will not eat a better meal in the city. All the delicious food you can eat, and simple elegance as well. I can't wait to go back!

I had very high expectations for this place and made a reservation a couple of months in advance for a special occasion. The food is definitely good, but I left a bit disappointed. First, the waiter who served us neglected to fill us in on the specials, which I would have chosen had I known about them. When we notified him that he didn't mention the specials, he didn't apologize but let us know that we made a very good decision regardless. Not what I wanted to hear. Secondly, on this night the place was overwhelmed by upper east side ladies perfume. The strong scents coming from the left and right of me negatively affected my taste buds.

they were able to squeeze me in at 6 after i called the night before my anniversary for a friday night reservation and told me they'd treat us well for the occasion. they didn't disappoint, service from the second i arrived at the door was extremely pleasant and attentive with almost one server per table. all the food was excellent - considering the quality of food in most moderately priced restaurants is mediocre this was slightly more pricey and well worth it. they bring service up a notch by offerng complementary amuse bouche to all tables and gave us a small dessert for our celebration. good selection of wines ranging from affordable to high end. great experience overall.

As a group of 4, we went to Charlie and Sharon's small but very warm eatery last november. It was a fantastic experience. I recommend a tasting menu, as they will provide a small amount of everyting they offer that evening.Presentation was beautiful, service was efficient yet relaxed, and above all the food was the best dining experience I have ever had. Just when you think you have had your fill of the incredible entrees, the desserts and dessert wines are worth saving room for. We never felt rushed, and were attended to with care by both Sharon and Charlie as well as their waitstaff. They absolutely do make an effort with children, once creating a lovely peanut butter and jelly sandwich from a buckwheat crepe that was a winner. Go early if you can, make reservations, and expect to be dazzled.

This place was not ALL THAT! There was no ambiance. It was tiny and I felt like I was eating in someone's living room. The overall feeling of this restaurant was AWKWARD!The food was just ok. And a little too pricey to be just ok. Very few wines by the glass and a small menue. The neighborhood was nice though so check out another restaurant instead.

Usually never take the time to write a review, but just felt I had to, just for this one time! Last night we celebrated our anniversary with a very special dinner at the Grocery. Everything was just perfect, glass of champagne when we sat down, wonderful squid appetizer that we share, my husband boneless trout and I had the lamb chop and a wonderful, delicious dessert served on a "happy anniversary" plate. It was our first time at the Grocery, but we loved it and from now on it is our special "anniversary" restaurant! Thanks so much all of you at the Grocery for making our anniversary even more special!

I was stunned at how mediocre our dinner was. Truly, an utterly average experience. The food is between fair and poor: asparagus that was overdone and miserably plated; risotto that was loose, runny, and poorly flavored; trout with mushrooms that was overcooked and mushy; and lamb that was poorly butchered and needed salt and pepper. To their credit, they did not charge us for half-eaten entrees, the one highlight.

With only about 15 tables in this cramped restaurant, I highly recommend making reservations. The food was wonderful, the homemade ice cream was outstanding but I think the detail that makes this place stand out from others is the fact that there were about 8 people attending to us the whole time, so in a way, it felt like we had a personal waiter/waitress and this is always a bonus since I have been to too many places where you can never find someone to help you. If you go, order the roasted chicken, and don't be surprised if you are sitting quite closely to someone next to you.

This is one of the best restaurants that I have been to in New York City - the service was incredible, everyone was very friendly and nice and the food was unbelievable. I highly recommend this restaurant.

As vegetarians who still like bold flavors it's not always easy to find great restaurants. The Grocery went above and beyond to create a memorable dining experience. The chefs came out of the kitchen to make some suggestions on how they'd alter meat dishes to be vegetarian friendly and what they came up with was just amazing. It's so nice to meet such flexible chefs. They seemed not just accommodating but inspired at the challenge! The waitstaff was also incredibly helpful and warm and the wine and desserts were fantastic. The best restaurant experience we've had in a long time!

i dont understand those who go to this restaurant and dont think the food is amazing. while the menu appears sparse and simple, the food is complex. i had the duck risotto, which was sublime. although the price is somewhat higher than most restaurants on smith row, it is well worth it.

I was visiting from San Francisco recently and decided to try The Grocery after hearing about it on NPR. I could not have been happier. The food was stellar. We had the foie gras appetizer which was lovely. I had the slow rendered duck entree. It was the best duck I've ever had, it truly melted in my mouth. The Gingerbread Pudding desert was delicious. The service was also excellent. The restaurant itself was small but very charming. Overall, it was an exceptional dining experience that I would (and have) recommend.

Went here a few weeks ago and was impressed enough to definitely want to come back. Reservations are tough to get last second (we ate at 5:30 pm). It is extremely small but the service is EXCELLENT and the chefs/owners wandered the restaurant to ensure everything is meeting expectations. Everything we had -- a special tuna tartare, squid and lamb were wonderful. The pork chop was a bit on the salty side but that is our only complaint. Wine list was great and reasonable. Thought for the quality of the food, the price was definitely reasonable.

the grocery is one of the most amazing restaurants in the city. i'm lucky it's less than a block away from me. with its soothing ambience and clean minimalist setting, nothing is distracting you from being able to focus on your food - which is outstanding to say the least. the service is meticulous and unpretentious, the wine list is selective and tasty, and the cost of the quality of food you're getting is unparallelled.

What great food. What great service. What great people. Compares to the best of the best. Everything on the menu was perfect. The owner/chefs spend a good deal of time chatting and serving and enjoying their guests. If I lived nearby, I'd be there nightly for dinner. 30 seats - all filled, all night long. Could not be more pleased.
Tough for a larger group except if you have enough to take all 30 seats.

The place is expensive for Brooklyn but well worth it for a special occasion. Bottle of wine, apps, two entrees, and one dessert came to $150 with tax and tip...which for Number 7 on Zagat is a bargain... The food is very very good - the duck for an entree and mushrooms for an app are a cant miss combo.

Reservations required. Started with Mushroom tart, wonderful. Dinner was a somewhat bland pork chop with apple dressing and so-so fish (can't recall what type). Service was phenominal, very cramped dinning area. I guess you either love it or hate it.

I consider myself to be a restaurant guru so I think my opinion of the grocer carries more wait than the average Joe who post his overview of the restaurant. I have dined in almost every high end restaurant in all of New York from Savoy to Candela to River Cafe and without question the Grocer has the best food. Good place to take a date, but make sure you save your money first because as in life good things cost money. The same applies here you will get great food but you will waste easily over $200 on dinner including drinks and tip.

What a fabulous restaurant! After many attempts to secure a table (reservations needed) my husband and I finally made it there. Well worth the attempts! The food is absolutely wonderful. The tables are a little too close together for my complete comfort. It's expensive, do it for a special occasion. But well worth every penny!

Who did these guys pay to get a 28/food 26/service in Zagat.
Food = ok. However, nowhere similarly rated restraunts.
Dined there 5 months ago.
A) Waited an hour for entree. B)Crazy lady (the owner?) was running around yelling and screaming like a loon. C) Waitress could only provide generic awnsers about restraunt's food/wine. Claimed to have NEVER tasted anything on the menu because owners DON'T provide tastings for their servers. Not 26 style service. ZAGAT should be ashamed of themselves.
Was Zagat bought? . Lots of money riding on sucsess of Smith Street. Numerous restaurant owners have invested big money and sucsess of this new Restaurant Row is paramount to them and yupsters who live in surounding neighborhoods Cobble Hill and Carol Cardens . Could they have gotten together and bought a ZAGAT rating in order to give Smith Street a big draw restaurant? I think it's possible.

This is a serious restaurant. Seriouly amazing food, serious waitstaff trying perhaps a bit too hard, a very serious chef/owner who is quite into what he's providing to the lucky Brownstone Brooklyn foodie/yupster/intellegencier crowd.

I liked the fact that there's few adornments hanging on the walls. This place is all about the food, baby!

Simply, this is amoung the top 3 restaurants in Brooklyn and in the top 15 in all of NYC. What it may lack in atmosphere, it makes up in flavors that are clean, fresh, and innovative. A wonderful meal, and a good value for what is delivers. Bravo!

The Grocery is by far the best restaurant on a very good restaurant row - Smith Street in Carroll Gardens. You just have to talk the (kinda) weird owner into giving you a table. We needed four for 8:30, and he'd only give us 7:30 (too early) or 9 (late) cuz it's small - although when that hour arrived, there were two empty tables. Go figure. If you can get past this, you will have a fabulous meal. Pricier than most of Brooklyn, but well worth it.

I went to the grocery after reading many good reviews about it however, I was a bit diappointed. The restaurant was about the size of a walk-in-closet and the tables were way too close for comfort. The grey walls with no pictures or color were dismal. For apps, we had the scallops which were good but the ravioli that came with them were bland. In addition, I ordered the fluke fish with spinach and the entire dish was BLAND - it had no flavor. Luckily, my husband ordered the beef stew and shared. On a positive note, they did have good dessert - we both had the brownie dessert with hazelnut chocolate chip icecream which was yummy. However, the restaurant is nothing special and and the food is hit or miss - perhaps the chef should tend more to his main dishes rather than mingling with the customers.

After all the hype about Grocery, I was expecting a fairly tasteless experience. The food was superb though - from app's to dessert, it was done perfectly. The staff and room could use an uplift of some sort, both were kind of boring and not too much fun to be around. Good place to have an intimate conversation with people, not good for celebrating of any sort.

The atmosphere here is so uptight! I ordered the (delicious) grilled trout and my husband had the duck. He asked the waitress for a sharp knife before tucking into his dinner. Moments later the chef came out and slammed a steak knife down on the table, huffily saying that if it was necessary then he should buy us dinner. The knife really wasn't necesary, but the chef's hissy fit was absurd. Our waitress forgot the "amuse bouche" until after the appetizer and brought bread after the entree arrived. When my b'day dessert came out, the waitress furtively brought out a cobbler w/ a candle in it, whispered happy b'day and scuttled away...wierd and pretty hilarious. We just bought a house in Cobble Hill and might have returned, but it's just too tense and crowded and there are lots of other excellent restaurants on Smith Street sans the freaky atmosphere!

I too can't understand why this restaurant has received such high marks not only by citysearch but zagat. appetizers were the only memorable and delicious part of the meal. my lamb came and it was cold. the waiter informed us that the meat should be at room temp but there was no heat at all. what does room temp mean? the air-conditioning was running so is that the room temp?
desserts -- panna cota was perfecto!
service was ok, not great just ok.
the one thing i did enjoy was how the chef and his sous chef would often come out running food or clearing dishes or delivering wine glasses. it was nice to see the community effort without any ego.
