I cannot say bad enough things about this cleaning company. NY Maids are *awful*.

Since we travel sometimes for months on end, we can lose housekeepers, and when that happens I use cleaning services until we hire someone new. I have used "The Maids," who are good; "Urban Green Clean," who are just ok. This time we thought we would try someone new, and I so regret it.

The two people they sent to our house did not know how to clean a house.

One was late, so I let the first one in and tried to show him our products and how to use them, but I was completely unable to communicate with him, since he didn't understand a word of English. I thought the other team member would serve as a kind of translator, but when she finally showed up, she proved also not to understand English -- not even the words for "sponge" and "broom," etc. (When I complained about this later, the manager told me that the service agreement states customers should call the office if they have "communications problems," so that someone on the phone could act as a translator. To which I said, "whaa?")

But even if I had called the office to secure an over-the-phone translator, I would have been on the phone the entire time, because at every turn I or my husband had to intervene in their cleaning, physically showing them, for example, how to turn the vacuum cleaner on and off, which brush to use, and how to cover the floor area so the dust would be picked up. The cleaners literally did not know how to vacuum the floor.

Not only did we have to show them what to do, we had constantly to prevent them from doing things that would damage the house. For instance, the female member of the team was wiping the floor with water under our throw rugs, which we expressly told her not to do because the wool of the rugs should never get wet. My husband saw her doing this and had to run into the other room to stop her.

My husband was, however, too late to stop her from using an abrasive sponge on our custom wood cabinets in the kitchen. Using this sponge, she caused visible damage, scratching visible lines into the paint.

As soon as the team left, we called the office to complain, and they told us to file a written complaint on their website, including pictures of the damaged cabinets. We did all this, and then I followed up with angry phone calls for about a week, until the manager told me that they would not accept the claim for damages because the cleaner denied having used the abrasive side of the sponge on the wood. The best she would do, the manager said, was to refund us for the cost of the cleaning. When I said that I thought the cost of the cleaning should be refunded in any case, because we had had to supervise and direct a job we paid almost $350 for -- and when I angrily said that I thought it was ridiculous that a denial from the cleaner stands as proof -- the manager said that she was going to *take back* their offer of a refund, because it was a "courtesy" they would extend only to "courteous" customers. And then she hung up on me.

So, in short, I can only advise you to AVOID NY MAIDS at all costs -- at least at $350.
