Good place to talk and hang out for drinks. More of a lounge than a restaurant. Dimly lit and cozy couches. I prefer coming during happy hour for the $5 margaritas. The backyard is amazing in the summer...wish it was heated for the winter.

I just moved to NYC about 4 months ago, and have been on the look-out for my new 'regular' hangout. I live on E. 16th st. and as I was exploring my neighborhood I came across Belmont Lounge (located @ E. 15th) I went inside to check it out, and was very surprised at the amount of space there is. I had a drink, talked to some of the employees & instantly felt welcomed and comfortable. I now go here every Monday w/ a few girlfriends and feel like family!

Pros: lots of space, outdoor seating, friendly staff & management

Cons: Gets packed during live bands/music nights

.

I came in here after work to eat some bar food (you must try the nachos with chicken! They are amazing!!) I pass by Belmont everyday before & after work, and until recently had never been inside. The bar itself is really big, and its really cute. But, more importantly the drinks are cheap if you go between 4pm and 7pm for happy hour- I recommend stopping in after a long day at work.

last week a bunch of my girlfriends and I got together for a school reunion and decided to have it @ Belmont Lounge...
Great choice!!!
Our waitress was great and the music was just right...
One of the good things that Ive noticed was that they have an extensive food selection, not your typical bar food, and their wine selection is impressive. we went through 3 bottles.
someone there knows a thing or two about wine. as the night went on, after a few drinks we were able to dance to the groovy beats. and us smokers didnt have to deal with the bitter cold, we were able to escape into the back pattio. all in all we all recomend this place!!!

Hi I'm the GM of Belmont Lounge and here what happened about that incident. This was on Saturday December 13th 2008, this gentleman's friend called few weeks before and made a reservation for his 40th birthday party. When the event coordinator made the reservation, he was promised a couch and a booth. On the set day, the birthday boy came in but without his friend that made the reservation. Upon request, I directed them towards the couch and the booth that was reserved for them, he turns around and tells me that he was guarantied all the 3 couches. mind you that in the whole venue there are only 3 big couches that seats 15 people each, also there was a party of 80 people that had on the same night booked the two remaining couches for a total of $2,500.00 in bottle service. So I told him that the other 2 couches were booked a month in advance and even showed him my reservation book where it says that only 1 couch and 1 booth were reserved for him. He refused and stated yelling and even went over to the other couches and ask the other customers to get of the couches, that is when I went over to him and told him that he could take his party somewhere else. Because to me that was a total disrespect for my establishment. Nowhere in NYC lounge or nightclub you can go and occupy all the major tables without a minimum tab or bottle and bottle commitment. We were even nice enough to give you 2 tables without any bottles or tab commitment. And by the way the comp bottle of Veuve yellow label, I'm the one that sent that to your table not a waitress because I felt that no one should get into an argument on the birthday eventough you were beeing totally disrecpectful to me, my staff , and our establishment. A waitress cannot comp a bottle without my approval. Please know that I do not like to disrespect other. I'm posting this so that people that read your review can read this one and judge for themselves.

Went to this place on a Sat. night with a bunch of girlfriends. The place was PACKED. They played really fun music, but there really wasn't any place to dance or enjoy it. They MAKE you check your coats at the door, which costs $$. The crowd was mixed -- a lot of very young girls and some sketchy older guys, but nothing you wouldn't find at most bars in union sq. The bartender Alec was HOT and awesome!!! We didn't really deal with any of the waitresses, but the bathroom line was absolutely ridiculously long, and stretched through the bar area, making it even more crowded. All in all, we had a pretty fun night. I wouldn't recommend this place over any other similar bar in the area though.

From start to finish, at least the Belmont Lounge is consistent. That consistency comes in the form of mismanagement, rudeness and an overall sense of the customer being taken for granted.

What was supposed to be a simple birthday celebration with 40 people and three reserved couches turned into one couch with bottle service (at this type of place- who are they kidding?) and a screaming match in the middle of the lounge. Totally unprofessional and a bad attitude.

The waitress comped us a bottle of champagne which was a nice gesture but it would have been a lot easier to just honor the original agreement.

I will also be consistent in the future and avoid this place for the rest of my life.

When I first came to NYC I thought that Belmont was a fancy schmancy bar. Now, 6 years later, this palce looks like a nice, but average bar. The drinks are a tad on the expensive side. This place is pretty big so there is always a place to sit. The music is decent, but not too loud so you can carry on a conversation. It is also conveniently located near Union Square. Not a bad place in general.

I went to the Belmont Lounge several times about a year or so ago, and wanted to check it out again. I returned this past weekend and noticed that drinks were outrageously priced given this is really just a bar with a lounge area in the back $16 for a vodka tonic + bud light bottle :O The outdoor space makes this place kinda worth checking out and the general lounge area is nicely set up with cool round seating area and surrounded by curtains to give people some privacy. Things to watch out for are weekend nights, Irving Plaza after show crowds, and the general buffoons that hang around union square. I wouldnt plan a night around this place, but the outdoor space deserves some consideration especially on week days. The rest is rather forgetable. I didnt have any problems with the service.

i dont know if they changed staff or what, but i didnt experience any of the problems of the other ppl....The service ws hot, the food ws better than bar food, and the dj rocked it!! And all of this was on a lazy tuesday night! If you wanna go chill in a dark living room enviornment with the option to dance i suggest gathering some friends up and heading over there!!

4 starts for belmont lounge!
First off, the garden area is perfect for enjoying the nice summer nights. I was there with a few friends and we didn't want to leave because of the great space.
after a few passion fruit mojitos (which i highly recommend) i was enjoying the place even more. The chicken satay was excellent as well.
Our waitress was really sweet and talkative, and it made the whole experience even better.

Yesterday, we went to this bad place. I'm very upset. The 2 waitresses on the counter in the entrance were very impolite. I never saw nothing like this! They answered impolitely and in front of our evident disappointment, they laughs in our. I advise you: don't go to this lounge...it's the shame because the place is not bad...the owner should change the waitresses.

I recently went to Belmont Lounge, and after having been there a few dozen times over the past 8 years I found out that gratuity for god-aweful service is mandatory at this place. My entire party and I (consisting of about 25 people) was asked to leave. Funny enough, all my experiences to date have been fun and pleasant. But after that evening I will be sure never to go back. The manager that evening (shaved head man with an aweful white shirt that obviously belonged to his little brother) and an little man in a suit with glasses asked us to leave but little do they know that they messed with the wrong people.

OVERPRICED, TERRIBLE SERVICE, RUDE PEOPLE - that's how I'd summarize my experience here. It USED to be cool, but not anymore...not sure if they changed owners, but it's a complete turn-around from what it used to be. My friends opened up tabs only to be over-charged for their drinks, tacked on other people's drinks and then trash talked to. They're theives - so make sure you check your receipt! The customer isn't always right in this "establishment" where the "management" will defend their ignorant waitresses who spill drinks, can't add, give attitude and can barely walk a straight line. I'm not hard to please and this is the only negative review I've ever written - tbut in all honesty this place is terrible. Save your money and go to a nearby bar for a much better time.

A group of us recently went to Belmont for a friend's 30th birthday party and had a similar bad experience as the others. First of all, they didn't even have our reservations which had been previously called in. Second of all, the waitress could not figure out who was supposed to be on which tab, despite it having been explained 5 times to her - 4 people on one tab, 4 on another. Throughout the night she spilled a drink on me, and got numerous items wrong on the tab. Another member of our party had to have her change the bill 3 times before it was correct, and the waitress gave her a complete attitude. Mostly everyone in our party was forced to get their drinks from the bar because the waitress was nowhere to be seen and they alos did not want a problem with the bill. Were were overcharged on our bill and the staff was then surprised at the measly tip that was left. The manager, or whoever he was, came over and asked why we left the tip we did. He asked if there was a problem with the service. I explained that there was. He then proceeded to kick our entire party of over 20 people out of "his establishment. " In normal circumstances, I tip well, even for average service. Our group is very easy-going and not looking to cause any problems. My question is, Why the hell do you ask about the service if we are expected to leave a tip regardless of our service? Why don' t you look into who you're hiring and maybe you will get a better tip in the future. It really is unfortunate, because that had been a favorite place to go for many people in the group for years. I don't know if it's under new management or what, but we will not be going back to Belmont Lounge EVER AGAIN. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE.

I've been to belmont a lot of times over the years. I have a lot of fond memories of the place. It used to be a great place to unwind and drop a few bills on drinks. But of the last 3 times I've been there it seems that the quality of the wait staff has been dropping like george jr's approval rating.

In all occassions, at least one person in my party (usually 10-20 of my friends and acquaintances) has had a drink spilled on them, errant drinks added to their tab, or other poor service from the wait staff. And each time management turned a blind eye. And from what you can garner from other posts, the drinks are some what over priced, so a errant few drinks here can double your bill quick. A spilled drink here and there happens, but this seems to be a part of the service now a days.

The last occasion, which is within a day of this post, we had 4 tabs miscalculated, one spilled drink, an argument over the gratuity, and a waitress who was dumb as all heck. A couple people in my party actually had the gall to complain to the manager and leave a desreving tip. Then he being the rational businessman who believes the customer is important and should enjoy the service and comfort of the lounge, refused service to and asked a party of about 25 peole to leave after we spent 2 hours and dropped almost $1k on his fine extablishment.

So I highly recommend belmont if you want to be over charged, your clothes ruined and then escorted out beacuse you just love the service.

I also like how it seems that their staff signs up here and posts how great the place is.

I have been to belmont lounge a few times, and every time I've had a better experience. The crowd changes from an after work happy hour one to a fun night out one as soon as the dj comes on. My girlfriends and I went there planning on just having a few drinks after work last Friday, and had such a good time that we didn't leave until 2am. We hung out for the 2 for 1 happy hour and then we tried some of the specialty drinks afterward, very tasty especially the huckleberry cosmo. The bartender was really good looking and very sweet, and our waitress later on in the night when we moved to the back was very helpful in finding us a good seat and making sure we were never left needing anything! Will definitely go back again!

I cannot figure out why anyone likes this place -- or even dislikes it because they think it's "trendy." It's not even that. It's just annoying. Loud, charmless, filled with bridge and tunnel people who think they're trendy but are just sleazy or annoying. Sunday nights are the worst -- awful, thumping bass with old people dancing poorly. You can't hear anyone speak, and there's not really anyone you'd want to hear anyway. Yuck.

After reading the previous review, I felt compelled to review Belmont Lounge because I had quite the opposite experience. My boyfriend threw his 30th birthday here with about 25 friends and we had a blast. Our waitress was attentive, cute and on top of things & our drinks were delicious, Kahlua Colada especially. The DJ (ROB SWIFT) rocked and all of us were dancing and laughing the entire night...I think a DJ is an ammenity to a club/lounge in NYC.
The only thing is the bathroom line.....

I was shocked to come to CitySearch and see that someone else had the same ridiculous experience:

Myself and 7 friends sit down and order food and drinks. We settle in and chat, when out of nowhere a DJ gets up and starts playing really bad music directly behind our booth. The music is so loud I can't hear the person next to me. I nicely ask the waitress if they can turn down the music and she gives me a snide, "No, sorry." and walks away. Umm...ok.

We try to tolerate the music, but it's absurd. So, my friend goes over to talk to the waitress and ask that we be moved to another table. The waitress gives her nothing but a hard time, complaining about this and that and not trying to solve the problem. There is a table wide open for us, the waitress acknowledges this but is still having all of our food and drink delivered to our current table and not making any move to help us switch.

We wound up having to move ourselves to the new table. We ate and finished our drinks - we'd completely had it with the waitress' attitude and just wanted to find somewhere to relax and talk (you know, like a LOUNGE!?). We got our check and there was a 20% gratuity added to it! We were astonished that she'd have the nerve to try and slip that in (there was no mention of it on the menu, as others noted) after not even attempting to make our experience decent.

We left a 15% tip instead. The "bouncer" chased us down the block with the waitress in tow, whistling and yelling at us. He was screaming about us owing money ($6), we explained our reasoning and told him bad service doesn't warrant a 20% tip. The logic shut him up and he walked away yelling that we can never come back again. Oh no. Not that. Anything but that.

All of this could have been avoided if they had just turned the music down. Instead, they chased out and banned loyal customers (some of whom have brought parties of over 50 people into the bar at a time). Smart.

Umm...ok.

Pros: Nice interior.

Cons: Absolutely ignorant service, overpriced and mediocre food and drinks.

Last evening two friends and I went to the Belmont for dinner and drinks. I typically don't expect much in the way of service when I dine at a place that is more bar than restaurant, but the experience I had last night was so off the charts bad I have to share it.

After an unremarkable dinner with unremarkable service - not terrible, just ambivalent and distracted - our server dropped off our bill which we split between us and prepared to pay. One of us noticed that there was a 20% gratuity added to the check. We were a party of three people. At no time were we told of this policy, and there was no posting of this policy on the menu.

When we managed to get an explanation on the 20% gratuity added to our bill we were told that a gratuity was added to all bills over $ 100.00. WTF???

To be perfectly clear -- having spent over ten years waiting tables, three of them as head waiter in an upscale restaurant -- and having had my share of bad tables, I understand having bad nights and bad customers. My friends and I are not bad customers. We are not needy or rude or high maintenance. We tip over 20%.

We crossed out the added gratuity and left 15% because by this time, our server was downright mean to us, and had tipped off the bouncer, who held us at the door until she told him that we had paid.

THEN the server, bouncer, and manager chased us down the street demanding the $ 4.00 we had subtracted from the gratuity, making it 15% instead of 20%.

Is this real? Does this happen in life? Chased down the street for 4 bucks?

They yelled at us and we yelled at them. We're not allowed to come back.

I think this is the most unbelievable story, and had to share it. I'd love to hear if anyone has a similar experience to share.

Pros: Good wine selection

Cons: Idiot staff, mandatory gratuity added for checks over $ 100

I really like this place--the atmosphere is chill, the Lemonade Lucys taste amazing (but arent very strong). My friend had a birthday party there and we had a table and champagne. I would definitely recommend it for an intimate function or date

This place was exactly what we were looking for. I dont get why some of the reviews are so low. I guess people either love it or hate it. I loved it and Ill be going back again soon. The crowd was a cool and entertaining mix of people from Irving Plaza and around Union Square. When I went there seemed to be a lot of musicians and music lovers - and I heard Trent Reznor and the kids from the Strokes frequent the place. Good service, great happy hour and aesthetically pleasing lounge.

THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE BEYOND WORDS. IT IS COMPLETELY OVERPRICED FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD ($12 FOR A MARTINI DURING HAPPY HOUR?) AND THE COCKTAIL WAITRESS NEVER BROUGHT ME BACK MY CHANGE! WHY DOES EVERYONE WHO WORK HERE HAVE AN ATTITUDE? IT'S NOT MY FAULT THEY HATE THEIR JOBS! STAY AWAY AND GO TO GALAXY, RESERVOIR OR 119 INSTEAD. OR GO TO SOHO IF YOU WANT A NICER BAR THAT 'S OVERPRICED.

I called and reserved a lounge area for a party of 20 and was told by the manager that if we all couldn't fit, Belmont would be glad to provide us chairs. I arrived early and found that they gave us a couch that barely fit 1/2 of us. When we asked for more chairs, they couldn't provide us any. Also, we were asked to give our couch for the people who reserved 2 hrs. after our reservation time. They claimed that only 1/2 of us weren't ordering drinks from the waitress. Here's the thing, some of us had no choice but to go to the bar ourselves and order drinks there because our waitress disappeared. So needless to say, we left the place with disgust, especially after they kept insisting on us to stick around at the bar area. We had a better time at the Union Square Bar.

Went there recently with some friends after work, we all had a great time. The speciality drinks were fantastic! I loved the watermelon man. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was comfortable as we occupied one of the couches. The food was much better than i had expected. The Quesidila's were great we ordered a bunch of them, along with calamari, but my favorite was the pasta and vodka sauce. The only thing i didn't like was that the bathroom was small and messy and we found ourselves waiting in line for it once the place got busy. We all had a great time and probably will be going back soon.

Heard abouth the place from a couple of friends and decided to check it out. Got there around eight on friday, it wasnt to crowded, got a booth in the back, service was very nice and efficient. I was amazed by the quality of the drinks at a reasonable price for New York standards and the vibe of the place. Around ten the place started to pack and the DJ was on.
I have nothing but good things to say about the place and will come back as soon as I can.

Nice from beggining to end. Great night overall, beautifull people and such a cool DJ. Line outside was a little long but we got there a little late. Service was fine considering the volume of business they had going on there.
Will be back and recomend.

Had heard only good things about this lounge so decided to try it last Saturday night. Was extremely disappointed and will never go back. The waitress took 45 minutes to bring our drinks and when she did, she only brought 1/2 the order and never the other half. Completely unacceptable. Either hire some more waiters or teach them how to do their job!

The belmont lounge is a great spot to hit after work, they have couches in the back to chill after standing on your feet all day.
If you get there early enough you have plenty of space to claim with your co-workers and friends.
After a few apple martini's you could end up in the bathroom with a fellow employee you once thought was uptight!!!!!!

This place is so overated, so over priced ($5 at the door, for what? $7 for a Guiness??!?!?!?, are you kidding?) and the service is just non-exsistent.

but what's the $5 cover for? there was no DJ or band...hmm. I guess to be included in the uber-hip crowd that awaited. had a bite, which was good. it is a cool bar, but LONG bathroom line every time I go--they actually go next door...

The bar was packed and the DJ was on fire. Ended up at the Belmont Lounge for a birthday celebration for a good friend of mine. The service was good and the drinks were flowing. Would recommend trying this place out. Not the most condusive environment for conversation but a great place to people watch.
Expect to wait in line for the restroom on a busy night.
