I shop at the one in Soho and the variety and prices are both very good. It's a good alternative to going to an expensive Japanese restaurant in the area.

Sunrise Mart is a cute Japanese neighborhood market in East Village. It's bigger then 7-11 but way smaller than Mitsuwa's. They carry the basic essentials that a normal market would except on a much smaller scale. They also sell prepared food -- sushi, edamame, onigiri, bento, etc . . . It felt good knowing that I could run over and buy a onigiri if I missed Japanese food during my vacation. Note: There is another Sunrise Mart located in the SOHO area -- 494 Broome Street -- between W Broadway and Wooster.

Best Japanese market in east village. It's small, but it has everything one would need to cook Japanese food. Truly a gem.

This gem of a Japanese supermarket is easy to miss because it's located on the second story of the Astor Place Books building in the East Village, but don't pass it up. The Sunrise Mart has everything from Hello Kitty products to Japanese toothpaste, soaps, and shampoos to a mind-boggling array of foods. You can purchase dishwarew here too, as well as fresh foods that require refrigeration. I love the Hello Kitty potato definitely try them.
