Came here looking for dessert having dined at nearby Meatball Shop. I'd seen the fried candy bars on the menu once before passing through and figured today was perfect.\r

I was in the mood for fried fish so I thought I drop in on this place. OMG so sorry I did. The fish wasn't seasoned and the chips tasted like they were fried in old oil. Plus it's "way" over priced for unseasoned fish and chips. I would

I really wanted to like this place.

The food is okay, but an online ordering experience really put off me off to how poorly the place is run, and the terrible customer service they have.

I placed an order through Seemless. After my 60

me and my girlfriend came here to get some stuff and now this is her favorite store. I can't get her away from here, and to make it worst we live only 56 blocks away from this place. So she would walk anytime she feels like it, or make

I went here as my son said it was pretty good.
must have been a bad day?
These were THE Worst Chips, i think i ever have had.
and being from London, Ive had loads of chips!
They were very dark in color, and tasted poor!.
extremely overrated, and way overpriced for Potatoes!
even the vinegar tasted unlike UK.
worst tarter sauce too.

fish was bland,
to me $5.50 for chips is extortion
Don't waste your time, its a small poky place, doesn't even smell like a chippy!
i was so disappointed
the oil was old, cos chips should be light and golden, not dark and burned.
lets hope they improve..or that a greek or turkish guy opens one.
cos they really know how to produce the best..

If this place is award winning, why all the negative feedback??

I plan on going here once I get to NYC this Summer.

Ok, so if you've seen it on Throwdown with Bobby Flay and it's peeked your interest and you want to try it, go ahead, I did. The place is very small with minimal room to sit. When you get out of there you'll smell like frying oil. The drinks are WAAAAYYYY over priced (and i'm talking about soda, not beer). The tartar sauce wasn't as good as they said it would be, it was too greasy and bland. The fish itself was cooked properly but I think they don't change the oil too often because there was a thick film of grease around it. All in all, and i'm very critical, it was just ok. It would be a lot better if they drained the fish before serving it to get some of the excess oil out of the batter.

Just as bad as Tea & Sympathy. I would never have thought that was possible. Probably the same owner. That would explain things for sure.

Run don't walk AWAY from this "food" establishment. Rude, obnoxious help in a small, smelly cramped environment makes Salt and Battery a place I no longer will visit. I guess Salt & Battery employees believe that customer service & food quality are not important here but it is definitely important to me.

Five members of Meetup[dot]com?s Thrifty Gourmets group and I field-tested this restaurant---essentially, a snack bar---on Tuesday, August 26th at 7:45 PM. It was staffed by a British-sounding counterman, who greeted us in a gruff but friendly fashion, and three or four other employees who prepared the food. The counterman took our orders quickly and called them out as soon as they were available to be picked up. They were prepared correctly and presented straightforwardly in baskets. I ordered a large and small portion of the fried cod, a small portion of chips and a canned Boddington?s ale. The fish itself was thick and meaty, but flavorless. Its coating was light, fresh and tasty, however. I needed to add salt in order to draw flavor out of the dish. The chips were mushy and also flavorless. I enjoyed exploring this restaurant with my associates and sampling fried treats, but didn?t think that my dinner was particularly good or a value. Large order+small order+chips+beer=$23.

I heard of this place from Rachel Ray's review. Since my husband doesn't eat meat I thought this would be a great place to try. The atmosphere was just like an establishment we visited in Scotland. The fish was great we tried the traditional cod and also hammock. The french fries were the soft waffle type. Not the crisps we expected but good, not greasy. The workers were all friendly and helpful when asking directions to a bakery around the corner. We went on a Saturday evening and there was no crowd. Mind you it would only seat 6-8 people bar seating style. We were both happy with the experience would definitely recommend it to any fried fish lover.

As many others did My husband and I Saw the food network with the Bobby Flay showdown and we thought we would give it a try. We first went to an excellent Broadway play and then we took a nice long walk to expect one to have a wonderful seafood dinner. What a disappointment that was. We had Shrimp and haddock plus cole slaw and chips. The shrimp and haddock were very bland and the cole slaw was the worst I ever tasted. I love how they put on the menu that the chips are chips not french fries. I don't know where in the world they come from but they sure were french fries. Very soggy ones at that. I ate a few and threw the rest out. After eating a terriable meal we had to go and find another place to eat that's how bad it was. Please save your money and feet from having to walk to a place that is not at all what it claims to be.After going thru this it makes me wonder if the cooks on the Food Network are all they are cooked up to be. lOL

The most authentic fish and chips in New York. The cod is just like as it should be. Light and very tasty, with the batter done to perfection. Try the home made tarter sauce and add plenty of salt and vinegar. The only thing I would warn the Americans that they are eating fish and chips at the end of the day and not to expect the world. This is not over seasoned food. It's just like a chippy back in England.

After watching Bobby Flay go up against A salt & battery on the food network, I couldn'-t wait to try it for myself. So, on an excersion downtown, my boyfriend & I made our way over for a late lunch. A little crowded but most patrons were waiting for their order. I ordered the cod & chips like on the food network & my boyfriend ordered the shrimp & cod combo. I couldn't help but to taste it in the car on the way home. All I can say is bland,bland,bland..no seasoning could be found anywhere. It was like eating chalk. We took it home & added some old bay seasoning et,al., but it didn't help much. We couldn't finish our meal. I'm used to seasoning in my food & we were tremendously disappointed. The portions (mine small, his large) were miniscule for the price(s). My neighborhood's chinese restaurant's fish & chips is far,far more tastier than this place & is far more cheaper. My suggestion: bring a can of old bay or a seasoning of your choice with you and add it to your food while the grease is still hot so it can adhere & maybe, just maybe you can be able to stomach this mess.

Much like the previous reviewer, my wife and I came down here after watching the Food Network throwdown. Fish n chips are one of my favorite food in the world and I was very excited. We shared the large cod fish and chips and it just wasnt very good. Not even the chips were special. I just dont see why this place was better than any other fish you can find anywhere. Canned soda was $2.50!! And no ketchups in any of the 5 bottles sitting around and the workers refused to fill it after request!! The whole experience was BS!

A Salt and Battery succeeds at being one of the best, authentic British chippies in Manhattan. Prospective diners who are looking for just such an authentic experience will be most satisfied. Whether you're home sick for Britannia or yearning to enter a world in which you've never been, a visit to A Salt and Battery will transport you to a working class quarter of any British city. The staff are cheerful and engaging with just the right amount of exaggerated Britishness that's welcoming but not overwhelming. All the classic British standbys are there, from the staple haddock and fish to bangers and mash. You can wash your meal down with one of their full selection of import beers or sodas, and finish it off with a deep fried Mars Bar.

The food is about as good as pub-grub can be; you might be disappointed if you expect anything other than high order takeout. The chips are fine; they're as thick and irregularly sized as you would find back in the UK, and they've always been well cooked for me. Basically, A Salt and Battery succeeds in providing high end low end cuisine (if you know what I mean). That said, their prices are pretty steep. If you're looking for an authentic experience at a chippy in Manhattan, it's well worth the price. What you pay for here is mostly atmosphere. The food is prepared, served, and tastes exactly as it would at a good chippy in the UK. In the sense that it replicates that experience exactly, it's well worth the few extra dollars. If that's not important to you, and all you want is fish and chips, you might want to go elsewhere.

I would recommend this place for expats and anglophiles. Others might be disappointed. And while it is a bit more expensive than other chippies, A Salt and Battery not that expensive; I would say both the chips and the fish are about two dollars beyond what I would normally expect. Skip the subway and walk there and back to compensate and to work off the deep fried Mars bar.

I'll recommend it, just. I've been to many better fish n chip places and will probably go to just as many better ones in the future. First of all, stick to the cod which is excellent and prepared as it should be; firm and flaky and in a good, sensibly thick batter. They haven't perfected the chips yet ... I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that maybe US species don't "chip" as well -- who knows. Too brown and "old" tasting - Can't put my finger on it. If you're British and have memories of ordering "a large cod and chips," think first. You get two decent sized pieces of fish, but a massive shoebox-sized container of chips which only emphasizes their mediocrity. Try the Idris Firey Ginger Beer - great stuff. Don't even try to sit inside because the air's pretty thick and the ventilation nowhere. The place could use a mop, and the staff some shampoo - proper British chippies are clean -- really. Sit on the benches outside and watch the people go by. In all, a remarkably average experience, in a place I wanted to visit. One time will probably do for now. New York is a tough place and has probably the best and most varied food choices anywhere. A Salt and Battery is fine if you absolutely have to have fish and chips and are in the Village. Otherwise there are a multitude of places for three people to take their 44 dining dollars, as a superlative Little Italy meal the next day proved, even leaving change for 2 of our 3 subway tickets.

I've been in the US for 3 years, and this is the first place I've found that makes (what I as a Kiwi) would call genuine fish & chips. A bit pricey, but that's to be expected in NY. Only a small waiting/eating area with a few bar stools - this is not a restuarant. Offers a range of fish, chips, and other fried foods, pies, fritters & sides (including baked beans & mushy peas) plus British drinks and beers. Delicious!!

Braveheart thought he got pillaged... he hasn't seen nothing! The $11 portion was small, the breading was soggy, and fries cost extra. The irony of it all is that I tried the fish and chips at a sports bar across the street the following week, 1/2 the price (w/fries included), and the portion was bigger and much tastier... FREEEDOM!!

This has to be one of the worst Fish n Chips meals I have ever had. The fish was OK, at best, and the large is more like a small, but the chips were thoroughly disgusting. The potatoes they used were old, soggy and very bad quality as well as over cooked and almost all of them were covered in black eyes and of a slight black colour throughout. If you are British and you are feeling nostalgic and wanted a bit of home in NYC, save yourself the disappointment and don't ruin the memory of how a nice portion of fish and chips tastes. If you are not British please do not tar all English Fish n Chips with the same brush. The service was rude (at least that was authentic!) and the price was expensive. In summary, I feel like I have been violated by these charlatans!

When you're craving fish and chips, this place definitely hits the spot. It will probably run about $12 but this is NY (and whoever stated that a portion of fish and chips in England runs about $2 is certianly not eating in London). It's actually less greasy than most fish and chip shops, although its certainly not very nutritious, and the fish is fairly fresh for a chippie. So every once in a while, enjoy!

I love London and I love this place. The fish and chips are the best this side of the Atlantic. The cod is crunchy and flaky. I just wish the portions were a little bigger. To complete the mood, they have a good selection of English sodas and drinks to go with your meal. Food is kinda pricey but much cheaper than an airline ticket to England.

On the downside: the food can be a bit pricey (an order of cod and chips will run you $7), the portions are 'merely adequate', the food is greasy as they come, the fries are 'chips' not 'pommes frites' meaning they are soggy (though i suppose some people like that sort of thing), the place can't seat more than 5 people, and the air reaks of grease. I know that sides like a lot of negatives but if you put up with all that you'll be treated to some pretty good fried fish and the closest thing to authentic British fish and chips the city has to offer. And that's definitely worth a try at least once.

Pros: the fish, british appeal

Cons: , pricey, soggy fries

Want to love the place ... but hate going there as you come out STINKING of frying. (Extractor fan?). Extremely expensive too - a 400% premium over Beale's Plaice on Eastenders for example! Have always had decent service at least.

Plain english......SUCKED, SUCKED, AND SUCKED! You're better off fishing in the East river and frying fish than hitting up this hell hole or buying a fish o let value meal from Mickey D's! To sum it up OverPRICED, deceiving employees, and plain old crappy food. The employees need to take a class in 101 'Customer Friendliness.'

Dying for some fish and chips one night, my boyfriend and I called in a delivery to this place. I swear the bell rung as we were hanging up the phone. This alone impressed me so much that I would definitely order from A Salt and Battery again and again. Beware, though, that you could literally squeeze out a gallon of grease from the fried goodies, but, boy, is it worth it!

One of the best places in the city for fish and chips that's served to you as it should taste. The fish always tastes fresh, and the chips are tasty. Appreciate their bow to American tastes with the serving of tartar sauce in addition to the bottles of malt vinegar about. Wish the Greenwich street location had more seating like their 2nd Ave location, because one invariably leaves it smelling of grease.

Being a brit in NYC I was happy to hear that chip shop was opening, alas A Salt and Battery did not live up to my hopes. The chips were terrible, I had a saveloy that was deep fried (??), and it was just generally bad. Its also a little pricey for some fried potatos. (Note to anyone non-English who has this as their first chip shop experience, a portion of chips in the Uk typically costs around $2, and you get more then what you get here)

I understand that 'Englishness' is seen as a novel thing here, but lets not exploit that by having a very poor excuse for a fine British tradition. .

Fresh fried Cod! Deep Fried Mars Bar! Boddington's Ale! It's simply the best in fast-food British cuisine. The prices aren't cheap, but the food is delicious.

Oh boy what a GREAT hangover spot. This place is FRIED HEAVEN. Try the cod and chips...the basic, but it's delish. Especially doused with salt and vinegar. Order the side of curry and it's even better. Mmmmm!!!!

In a word: excellent. I think the best fish and chips I've had in the city, or maybe tied with Telephone Bar & Grill. Excellent English atmosphere, and good clean food. Pricey, but come on, this is New York. What were you expecting?

Fresh from the fryer, juicey & moist. This also includes the chips. Overall a top gaff. Don't listen to the whiners, going on about the price, & even worse, comparing it to English prices. Get real i live in a shoe box, & that costs me more in 6 months than my 1st house cost me in England, this is New York!. I've got a good appitite, but i had to admit defeat, i think the fish was related to Jaws, & a good portion of real chips to go with it. So get real & get down there!!!

I've always loved fish and chips and when I saw that A Salt and Battery opened a branch in the East Village, I decided to check it out. What a disappointment! The prices were obnoxiously high and the fish had an ammonia smell and taste. Now I don't know if they prefer their fish in England on the rotting side but here in America, fish is NOT supposed to have an ammonia smell/taste. It means that the fish is old and better thrown out! For the price and quality, you are better off making fish and chips at home!

Yes it is pricy but its the best fish and chips I've found in the states. The ONLY place I've ever tried that gets it right. Makes me feel like I'm back in London. As for the complaints about no tables...Its a CHIP SHOP! Not a five * restaurant. Its supposed to be take out.

Great for takeout fried fish and big old fries. A wide variety of seafood (and other things) available, battered and fried. Service is on the slow side for takeout, but more than made up for by the staff's friendliness and the chipshop ambience.
