Head over to The Griffin to Michael Fredo's Wednesday night party. They have a great show and an open bar from 8-9:30. Free admission too. Michael Fredo with The Benny Reid Ensemble is a great Jazz/ Ratpack show. 50 Gansevoort @ Greenwich

At the urging from some out of town guests to visit Smoke, we decided to try it out.
WOW! From the moment we arrived Frank, one of the owners, greeted us at the door. Immediately you realize how intimate, inviting & relaxed the place is.

Good shows, great atmosphere. The owners, bartenders and waitresses are friendly and welcoming. One of the few places where you can go no matter where you are in your day/life - i.e. whether you feel A-list fabulous or just need to unwind and relax, single looking to meet someone, single looking to not meet someone. Also it's very exciting when very good musicians show up later in the evenings. Wednesday (jazz/funk), Sunday (vocalist, latin jazz) and Monday (open mike later in the evening ) are my favorite of the no-cover nights. There's a cover on weekends so I don't go as often as I'd like, but the times I've gone they've had wonderful shows.

Pros: great jazz, friendly owners, staff, cool "grown" crowd
Cons: can't smoke in NYC!
Walked in on Tuesday night and the place was hoppin'. They actually reserved a prime table for us when I mentioned a few days prior that we were coming in for my husbands birthday! Very comfortable, not intimidating at all. The jazz was the best I've heard in the city.

Pros: best jazz spot, great layout, in my neighborhood
Cons: limited space
Smoke on Sundays is great - especially when Melissa Morgan is performing. I love the relaxed ambiance and decor - the perfect place to conclude a nice weekend. Now if they just had some things to munch on...

simply the best....
Not the usual fleecing like the more established clubs. A real player's club - ie it's very much of a musician's hang. On any given night you might see loads of people that often play there including some real ledgends.

Without question, smoke is certainly up there with the best jazz spots in New York. Nicely done decor, that feels inviting to almost anyone--as long as they buy two drinks!--but you can get away with this if you try. The crowd, staff and musicians are relaxed, and the jazz is free (except on weekends). Check out the wednesday night funk thing. This is a good place as a lady to walk in on your own, under the guise of strict 12-bar-blues entertainment, and meet a nice guy when he begs your comment on the music.
Too many places in this town charge $25 and two drinks per set to join the company of visiting japanese businessmen and euros. Smoke is off the map--thankfully.
