Buddakan was great experience and most tasty fusion food. Everything was delicious down to the dessert. The only thing was that it was a bit pricey. Which was ok for special occasion

Pricey, very delicious! Served family style made it even better for our large group. We even had left overs! Service was as good as it gets in NY. I highly recommend Buddakan!

Amazing food for very high price. Ive tried more or less everything on the menu and I have to say the only thing I genuinely didn't enjoy were edamame dumplings, everything else is delicious.

The one place this one would directly get compared with is Spice Market, being in the same neighborhood, at the same price point and with the same kind of food.

So lets look at the positives first. The ambience is stunning. From the sexy

It was our daughter's Birthday and it could have started off on the wrong foot. Thanks to the wonderful staff at the restaurant we could not have had a more pleasant evening. We originally were placed in the grand dinning room of which we were told would be a bit noisy, we asked to be switched to the red room..."mistake" too noisy and not a setting for a birthday celebration for 4 persons...Then we had our drinks brought to our table and the waitress placed the champaign glass down and it spilled all over the top of the table and a bit on my daughters dress...I knew I was in the wrong room..I excused myself and found the manager that helped us with the move and expressed my grave dislike for this room and what had just occurred with the drink. I told him that I would like to go back downstairs and he made it happen. We were very pleased and ready to order our food. We had a headache by this time and we asked for some Tylenol or Aspirin...They bought it to the table immediately and if that was not enough they went
out of their way to provide us with Aleeve as they overheard us saying that this would be the quickest remedy. Wow!!! talk about sensitive to their clients needs and service....5**** The waiter was the greatest, he stepped us through the ordering and the recommendations were amazing..Duck Spring Rolls, Edemami dumplings, .Peking Duck, Mongolian Lamb Chops, Lobster Fried Rice, Vegetables...It was delicious!!! Then they brought over dessert for the table of which one dish included a candle for our wishes.
As we ended our evening and it was certainly crowded by then...I looked for the manager to thank him once again for making our evening so wonderful...I asked one of the wait staff if they could locate him and they immediately told me that he would meet me at the front
of the restaurant...Sure enough as we got upstairs and made our way to the door, he was right there...I shook
his hand and thanked him so very much...
5 Star Experience!!!

Came here recently for the Asian Restauranat Week prixe fixe $45 menu. We had a choice of appetizer, entree, side and dessert.

For the appetizers, we chose the edamame dumpling (creamy edamame filling) and the Hoisin glazed Pork Belly served with steamed buns. Both were very good and I wished the portion sizes were a bit bigger. Each dish came in servings of threes.

Our entrees were the char siu pork and the Alaskan black cod. The pork dish is plenty of meat without any sides necessary as it rests on a bed of rice noodles. With the cod, you definitely need a side, while delicious, it wouldn't be filling on it's own.

For our sides, we chose the vegetable fried rice and minced pork lo mein. The fried rice came with a side of creamy coconut sauce. Very creative and made the fried rice taste different and familiar at the same time. The lo mein was a bit too sweet and the flavorings are like the char siu pork, so perhaps, it wasn't the wisest combination given our entree selections.

There were 2 desserts on the prixe-fixe menu so we got them both--banana and tangerine-lemon sorbet and chocolate black tea semifreddo. The sorbet was nothing to write home about. I think the lemongrass sauce the server poured over it table-side made everything melt faster. The Semifreddo was delicious! The combination of chocolate and black tea produced a very unique flavor.

I was a bit disapointed the desserts were not Chinese inspired as the restaurant is meant to be Chinese. Nonetheless, it was good and I would highly recommend this place.

Went here for a friend's birthday dinner. She had no problem making a reservation for the main banquet table downstairs; however, due to part of our party being late we ultimately ended up at a different table. The food was decent and pricey (as expected) but the ambiance made up for it. The decor was gorgeous and the seating area was spacious. It was loud, but that made it comfortable for us to laugh and speak loudly if we wanted to. The downstairs is definitely not a quaint, quite place for a date however.

The cocktails were around $11-$13 each and delicious. I would recommend the charm cocktail if you like your drinks tart.

The only real downfall was the service. The waiter was extremely snooty CONSIDERING THEY ARE JUST A WAITER FOR CRYING OUT LOUD (the audacity of some people...). He was extremely slow, so slow in fact we canceled one of the dishes we ordered. Also, when I asked if they could decorate a dessert for the birthday girl, he muttered something rude about "seeing what he could do" and disappeared for upwards of 15 minutes. By this time we were done with our meal and so we canceled yet another dish.

Overall it would have been a pleasant night if we had a different waiter. I would definitely go again but only for dinner; the bar looked extremely crowded and not worth my time.

We recently had a large party at Buddakan and had an awful experience.

I'll start with the bill, which included hundreds of dollars worth of "mistakes." The items on our bill that were not bogus - were beyond crazy (we were charged an "event fee" for our dinner). This would have been OK, had we been in a private room, but our "event fee" got us a table with guests - yes we were charged a premium to sit at the same table with complete strangers!

The attitude we received from the manager was unacceptable. She wanted to know "what the big deal was" if we were charged for food no one ordered (I am being serious).

As for the food it was, at best, decent take out. Save your money and go to Chinatown!

Great Food, Great atmosphere, Great Drinks, Great music.

The wait can be long. The staff is so busy that they are not the most attentive especially if you are going to settle for seating in the lounge area but the food is tasty and the drinks are great. This is a place where you go for the amazing NYC atmosphere with good friends who are not divas period and want good drinks, good food, and a great environment to have great convo.

For a multi-million dollar restaurant, you would think they would have spent more time focusing on, you know, the food? Mediocre faux-asian. The bartenders were sloppy as well, no craft at all.

Ok, maybe I don't really get the whole New York glam thing. However, I cannot help but be annoyed by this place despite the fact that the insanely good duckling and its generally inventive take on Asian fusion keeps me coming back from time to time. For starters, getting a reservation is a pain in the neck unless you're willing to namedrop a bit. I'd like to think that at some point a place starts appreciating return business without you having to do that unpleasantly NYC thing. The greeting staff is rude and standoffish, acting as if they are guarding a gateway to heaven. The bar area is impossibly crowded, loud, and difficult to navigate. I strongly dislike their system of having you stand there while a frazzled hostess rushes from group to group asking what the last name is on the reservation. For the past three visits, my request for a table downstairs has not been honored, and we've had to reiterate and wait.... The space, while unusual, is certainly uninvitingly grand, over the top industrial chic, and I do not get the dead stuffed birds as decor. All of this, however, seems to be the requisite purgatorial experience to enter a culinary nirvana. The food is very good, albeit somewhat predictable at times. I am not a huge fan of their take on steaks but do enjoy the dim sum and the seafood dishes. The wine list has an admirable range from very inexpensive to very expensive, well represented in each category by accessible bottles from around the world. The service is attentive and generally friendly, if a bit frazzled and frantic at times. If you go, do not miss the duckling, the fried rice, and the stir-fried veggies. The scallion pancakes are positively addictive. So are pretty much all the dumplings with the exception of the edamame ones, filled with a green, unsavory-looking paste of weird texture. Generally, a caricature of what a film-version of an outsider's perspective on what truly "New York" may mean in terms of the scene and the bridge-and-tunnel crowd decked out in their Sunday best. But I keep going back for the food.....

I wouldn't go back to get rob a second time. Chinese food is not expenxive! The place is way too big. This was not my kind of place. Save it for short-minded people who think they are somebody for they go to a huge restaurant that will overcharge you for just a tiny bit of food.

I recently attended an event here and while the restaurant is aesthetically pleasing, I would not return. The place was packed to the point where strangers were sitting at our party's table (in the bar area) while waiting to be seated which was awkward. The food was just average and $25 for 3 scallops... yes 3, and they were average sized not jumbo. Needless to say... 4 glasses of wine, 3 scallops, and a bowl of fried rice + tip = $140... while a very enjoyable evening, would not eat here again.

I went to Buddakan for a girls night out sort of thing, it was my friends idea, but she is usually pretty spot on with picking the places to go for food.

Once again, trusting her judgement was a wonderful success. The food was delicious (I especially recommend the taro puff lollipops and the lamb chops!), the ambience was classy and interesting, and the service was especially incredible. Our waiter, Charles, made us feel like we were VIP and was extremely helpful - and he was really hot! I would have definitely taken him home in a doggy bag (then later I would have been the doggy).

So go here if you want great food and a lot of fun, and ask for Charles!

The moment I stepped into Buddakan NYC, I was amazed by the atmosphere. The top floor is a lounge, and is also beautiful, but the moment you step down the stairs and into the high-ceiling dining hall, you will be mesmerized. The service is a little slow, but the food is good, and the waitress we had was very sweet. Everything is served family style, so it let's you get a taste of many items off the menu. I would recommend the Chili Rock Shrimp a choice for an appetizer, and for an entree Sweet and Crispy Jumbo Shrimp- very tasty! Although it's a bit pricey, it's worth every penny and is definitely great for a special occasion. Make sure you make a reservation for the downstairs portion!

My friend moved to NYC about a year ago and for her birthday I wanted to create a very "SITC" moment so boyfriend suggested I take her to Buddakan. He said that the food was great and that she would enjoy the environment (eye candy etc.). We went on a Friday night and were having a great time until we ordered dessert. The dessert was nicely decorated but when we began to munch on it, we found a long strand of hair in the middle! I was super embarrassed. Refusing to make a scene, I quietly called our waiter. He was astonished and couldn't believe it. They ended up paying for our drinks as a form of apology. It was horrible and so disappointing. I would not recommend this spot.

It's one thing to go to a restaurant that is a hole in the wall and get dinner for under $20 in New York City. However, it is something completely different when you have an over priced meal, cocktails that are mainly juice and have dessert brought only to find a long thick curly piece of hair backed into the cake. On one account this is disgusting, what else did I eat. An another, health code violation! Means someone was not wearing their hair neat at a high end restaurant that people rave about. Unacceptable.

The edamame dumplings were absolutely retched. This guy who reviewed right before me has probably never eaten in a restaurant before ever. Basically this is the biggest disappointment of a restaurant in New York. It is the kind of place that gives you tiny, poorly executed food on a huge plate and charges you through the roof for it (I am not opposed to spending lots of money on dinner but this was rediculous). I could not have gotten myself drunk enough to enjoy this food. Basically, go to Tao for Asian Fusion. ( i guess the short rib is not complete pooop)

Pros: cool place inside

Cons: the food and just about everything else

.

You can obviously tell that this is a great restaurant. I HIGHLY SUGGEST the Edamame dumplings as an appetizer. It was one of the most delicious things i've ever eaten and I still to this day crave it. Great service and options. I was a little disappointed when I got the Hot & sour scallops. Though the scallops were delish, they failed to mention on the menu that there were tiny pieces of chinese pork in the menu item. As I personally don't eat any meat, I had no clue it was even in there til I was almost finished and asked what it was. Other than that, things were great. The crying chocolate dessert was also fabulous.

There's alot of high end/trendy restaurants in new york, out of all them this place is one of the trendiest and by leaps and bounds has the GREATEST food. The edamame dumpling and beef scallion pancakes for apps are amazing. The udon noodles which are considered a side are bigger than most entree's and taste unbelievably good. All the entrees are delicious as well. It's a great place to go if you're trying to impress a date, a large group, etc. There's five different rooms in this two floor restaurant so you can eat quietly in the library room which is a bit more romantic, or eat downstairs in the one of the big rooms that's loud and boisterous. This is also a great place to stop by for a drink with a date before going out. If you want to show her that you know the places where the most beautiful people in new york wine and dine then this is def. the place.

Service is fantastic as well. One time I was waiting for my table having a drink with my friends and a waiter dropped my drink by mistake. I didn't think anything of it, the manager comped all of our appetizers for four and a round of drinks at dinner. Not including drinks expect to pay about 40-50 per person which for the ambience, quality of food, is not bad at all. My mouth is watering while i'm writing this review, going now to make reservations for my next visit...hope this helps.

Pros: ambience, beautiful people, QUALITY of food, good prices for a place this trendy

Cons: you need reservations to eat always!

I cant even begin to see why people give this place a bad rap. It is the best experience I have ever had in the City. It really is all about your approach. I know people come on here and bash this place but you have to understand why. If you go here looking for a quiet, dull romantic evening with tiny $80 dishes and 1000 dollar wine list with some fancy french name you are going to the wrong place. If you are looking for a hip dark sleek trendy music infused asian fusion restaurant with killer drinks, banging food and cool people you are gonna have the time of your life. Lots of Menu options, tonnns of drinks and lots of beautiful people. Great place for a date, or for groups of friends to mingle with hot singles. crowd is late mixed but lots of young(28-40)
I ate Peking Duck spring rolls and a fried calamari salad for appetizers. For my meal me and my gf split a sirloin cooked in a chile cranberry reduction as well as a pork tenderloin in a beautiful chutney. Had cocktails and sake with dinner. Skipped dessert cause we were stuffed but she had espresso and I had this sparking sake called Tokimeki that was sweet. Would recommend every single thing. Sparkling sake and Calamari salad were the bestttt!

ENJOY

I arrived about ten minutes late to my dinner reservation, but was seated within 5 minutes of my arrival. There's a coat check and a lovely waiting area, before you're seated. The ambiance is fantastic, the place is huge but very well decorated. It feels like you're walking into a great experience. The food was great. Ordered the duck rolls, which were a little dry, but very tasty itself. The steak and the lamb chops were diving and the house special fried rice is the best. This is a great date spot. My bill was a little high, but well worth the experience.

I would eat here every night! The food is out of this world. Try the beef and the crab fried rice. OMG YUM! It's beautiful, the servers are really nice and know the menu very well. When you walk in the hostesses make you feel like you are checking into a fancy hotel, the bar is a cool scene and has a friendly vibe. Even though it's trendy, it does not give you a pretenious vibe. Go if you haven't been already.

Had a 9:30 reservation for a thursday night got there at 9:20. The place was mobbed, Checked at the front they told us to wait in the lounge and someone will get us when the table is ready. It was so crowded we were barely able to make our way to the bar. Then we looked at eachother and said how in g-ds name is anyone gonna find us for our reservation. About a minute later someone walks over to us with a pen and pad took our reservation name and time and marked it down, within a few minutes she came back to us with our table. We were blown away. We ordered some appetizers all unbelievable (tuna spring rolls, steamed seabass rolled in cabbage, and the deviled tuna tartar). They all came out within 10-15 minutes of ordering them. With the amount of people in the place the service was outstanding.
For the main we had the cod which was one of the best pieces of fish ive ever had, it melted in your mouth). If your looking for a fancy upscale resteraunt where you eat with a bunch of yuppies than this is not your place, if your looking for a trendy place with a nice crowd, great ambiance, upbeat, chilin background music, great food, where you have a few drinks and relax then this is your place.

I was there on a date and had a great time.

It's a damn good restaurant! If you didn't catch that reference to Fall Out Boy, then nevermind. The point is, I'd heard so much about the scene at Buddakan that I didn't really know what to expect from the food, which turned out to be fantastic. The only downside was that we had to wait quite a while to get seated despite having reservations - partly due to their ludicrous system where the hostess has to run around in the dark trying to find designated patrons at the bar in order to be seat them (you'll understand if you go there). Having said that, our waitress was unbelievable nice, very attentive, and had oustanding recommendations off the menu. Pretty much everything we ordered was spectacular (lamb, eggplant, tofu, and dumplings). If you can get a reservation, and don't mind a bit of a wait, Buddakan is well worth the time and money...

Go here for the atmosphere. It truly is a beautiful space, especially the downstairs. It made me forgive them for making us wait more than 15 minutes past our reservation time. The fish I had was okay (sea bass) if a bit bland, but the crab puff appetizers were too spicy, even for someone who loves it hot. The prices are insane for what you get, but that's to be expected. All in all, I'm very glad I checked it out.

I went to Buddakan with a group of girlriends to celebrate my promotion. It was AMAZING. The black bass was crazy delicious, and we ordered some noodle shrimp dish which was also fantastic (and the first time I've eaten pasta in THREE years). We had originially planned to eat appetizers and entrees at buddakan and then go to paillard or somewhere else for dessert, but when the dessert menu came we decided to try it out. The crying chocolate dish is SO good. I definitely gained like five pounds from this dinner, but it was so worth it. GO TO BUDDAKAN! it's worth the two days of fasting it will take to get back to your normal weight...

ok, I read some of these reviews and I think a lot of it is crazy. I went here with my family and it was great, we ordered a total of 12 dishes and shared, that is how it is intened and it was great, only 2 of the dishes were average. The look of the place is really nice, its dark, but very hip and upbeat. The prices are up there but its worth it. HOWEVER, if you cant handle being on time, they dont hold reservations cause they dont have to they do between 600 and 1000 every night which is an insane number of people, which also makes it a loud fun place, great for a big group, but if you are looking for a romantic setting you should try it another time. Another thing, the food is high quality so the price is really worth paying, but if you cant handle spending 12 bucks for dumplings and not having the standard 3 course meal served all at once, skip it cause this place does it according to what is ready and is ment for sharing, all in all though I had one of the GREATEST NIGHTS OUT THERE AND LOVED THE FOOD AND WHAT THEY DID TO THE PLACE.

Went there last night with 10 people w/ reservations and were seated without a problem even though we were late. I think that was the most impressive part about this restaurant. The Food: Appetizers/Dim Sum like others have indicated were great --- the dumplings, rock shrimp, etc. (although to be honest, I've had better in Chinatown and Flushing) The entrees are best avoided --- I think everyone of us there agreed that it was pretty bad/sub-par. The rice noodles were bland, the beef dishes were heavily marinated in what I'm sure is a sauce you can purchase in a Chinatown grocery store, the fish was bland and uninspiring. My overall sentiment was that the chef was trying too hard but it was unimpressive. The best entree, I think, was the crab fried rice but realize that that is not a compliment. The drinks were great and the desserts were "ok" --- Actually, I guess the desserts were ok since I never received my order although I did sample other peoples orders. That being said, the service was a bit subpar given the type of restaurant --- forgetting a dessert order? And no apologies? Come on. Acoustics --- this place is LOUD. Overall, nice location for people watching. Would not go for dinner.

The entrees...not wonderful. I would highly recommend this place for drinks and dim sum at the bar. Or try the small bar downstairs with seating...it's less crowded. Skip the entrees. They're not worth it. GORGEOUS space though. beautiful restaurant. Not sure I'll go back though, but fun experience. Service wasn't amazing either.

I walked in with my girlfriend with no reservation around 6:30pm. We sat at a bar table for 10 minutes and were then seated at a nice table in the downstairs library room. The main room is certainly impressive and I would sit there next time I go. As others have said this place is big and boisterous, like so many nyc restaurants. That doesn't bother me as long as the food and service are good. Buddakan came through on both those points. Actually, the service is amazing for a place this huge. Even thought the pace is fast, we never felt rushed. Our meal was delicious from beginning to end (the shrimp & lobster chow fun is fantastic!). Fresh ingredients, nice presentation. Again, I wondered how a place this big can serve quality food like this. By the time we left a few hours later the upstairs was practically impassable with people! Obviously, a lot of people like Buddakan. Me too.

This is one of the most impressive spaces in the city. The big room is great, the library room is slick and so are all of the other areas along the big room. Our waiter was extremely knowledgable about the menu, the cooking preparation and the design of the restaurant. Did you know all of the blonde woodwork in the big room was hand carved in France? So were those huge chandeliers! Expensive yes, trendy small servings, not really. I loved it.

I don't understand how this place is such a success. All the negative reviews about it on here are RIGHT. I went against my better judgement and went with my boyfriend and our two friends anyway... usually I don't go to a place if there are more than two negative reviews on here and that guideline hasn't failed me yet. I am completely disappointed in this place. First of all the music was SO LOUD. Not only was it extremely loud but it was asian club music that was very high pitched and "ping-y". We could not even hear our waiter offer up the specials for the evening and we told him we couldn't hear him and he had to lean in to hear us tell him that! He said he'd talk to a manager about it. 5 minutes later three different managers wearing secret service type ear walkie talkies walked by our area to check it out, they all shrugged their shoulders and walked away. We asked our waiter again to have the music turned down and the girl manager came over and started talking. she was 3 feet from me and I couldn't hear her! She leaned in and spoke louder and slower and told us that the music is set at one level for the whole restaurant and it was turned down as much as possible. F#(K that! ONTO THE FOOD: we got 3 apps and 4 entrees. The waiter warned us the food was served "family style" and that there'd be enough to share. Someone needs to tell these people that just because you serve the food on big plates doesn't make it family style! You actually have to fill out the plate with food. There was only enough of each of the 7 dishes for each of us to get 1 or 2 bites MAX per person. The food was very expensive and not worth it since it was more like a sampling than a meal (I've eaten larger portions at Whole Foods on sample days) I think the chef made everything in a easy bake oven. I also had to shout across the table & lip read in order to hear the conversation. The food was tasty but I didn't get many chances to taste it! Avoid this place at all costs and you'll be happy!
