Had to wait almost an hour to be sited. Was hanging out at the bar, it was crowded. The food was worth waiting for. Next time I'll have to call to reserve the place.

Pros: Ambience, Service, FOOD!

Cons: Long wait for large party

My overall experience at Sofrito was great. It's the food and the food alone that brings me back. Is it crowded, yes. Is it loud, yes. Are the wait staff a little too pushy, yes. Do I wish I could hear, yes! But that seafood paella

I would never recommend this place not even to my enemy. Everything at this place is horrible. Every type of food is salty, the place is very noisy and can't not say anything without yelling, the waitress are so low class that not even deserve the tips that they are making for every table. About USD 100 for table in one hour, like an engineer which Im sure they don't even have any college degree. They rush you to leave so they can't keep making more money and not let you enjoy your food. The sangria was made out of the cheapest red wine of the world. The ambiance was terrible plus nobody should dress for this place. I wore a very expensive and elegant dress and I step out smelling like onions and garlic. I had to wash my hair at midnight. I hope this review helps a lot of people because it is not fair to spend money In this non sense way.

My friends and I (six of us in total) arrived without reservations on a Saturday evening at 6:00 PM. I think because we came early, there was no wait and we were seated right away. The decor and the music was festive, and the menu itself had many authentic and delicious-sounding dishes. It was tough to make a choice!

I ended up choosing the crispy whole red snapper with coconut rice. The presentation was awesome - the entire fish (including head and tail, like it should) came wrapped around a bed of delicious rice. The fish was delicate and flaky, and the sauce that accompanied the dish added the perfect amount of flavor.

I also tried my girlfriend's filet mignon and sauteed spinach with garlic. The steak was tender and succulent, and the spinach was also delicious.

The loud birthday celebrations at this place were like nothing I've ever seen before. I highly recommend coming here with a group for someone's birthday.

Great music @ the Lounge, waiting was not too long even though we were told to be there by 10, didn't get seated until 15-20 minutes later. In the restaurant the music can still be heard-no one heard each other talk-had to yell. Food was OK-only resemblance to a real Puerto Rican dish was the empanadas from the appetizer trays (too excessive) otherwise the entree was extremely salty, luckily i don't suffer from any type of condition that would kill me-food was untouched after a couple of bites. Wait staff didn't even wait until the plates were cleared and they were already taking everything (felt so rushed) when was eating my desert, the waiter whispers in my ear about how long i was going to take since there were other people waiting (the desert was still in my mouth)-this was such a horrible experience that the group we were in decided on never coming back-for the price we paid it's just not worth it-we wanted to enjoy the live band and we felt like we were being rushed out :-( NOT A HAPPY PERSON-DO NOT RECOMMEND

I traveled up to New York from South Jersey last night to take my wife to what I believed to be a Latin Restaurant with class but was not impressed and disappointed when I entered doors. I found myself in the middle of a night club. I don't know if anyone dining realized that they were have dinner on a dance floor. This place was a mess. There was no order and the location looked like it was over its occupancy which is a fire hazard. The website makes the location look and sound great but this place is a night club transformed into a restaurant. My wife and I had a drink and left the restaurant and decided to go to Carmines in Times Square and have a nice bottle of wine with a delicious dinner. I would not recommend this whole in the wall to anybody. They need Chef Ramsey from Hell's Kitchen to give this place a makeover. My wife and I are 100% percent Latino and can't give this location a thumbs up. Whoever owns this club should go to Cuba Libre in Atlantic City or Philadelphia and get some Ideas about . This place will eventually will close down. I don't like to go to restaurants where I have to stand and wait for a table while being bumped and pushed around by patrons and workers. I like to waist my money at restaurants that appreciate my business. I am hoping they revamp this place and represent the Latin people.

My friend and I get to Sofritos and they hostess insisted that we buy drinks because we were sitting at the lounge. She recommended one of the house specials and it tasted like water. I informed our wait staff and she insisted there was alcohol. The waitress made us pay at the bar. I wanted the bar tab to be together with the meals. She had the nerve to get into a fight with me, a customer.
My friends and I got to our table and the place was LOUD!!! I could barely hear my friends speak. Our waiter recommended a very expensive dish and since one of our friends was Puerto Rican, we ordered it. The food was tasty and the portions were more than adequate but I did not appreciate the waiters and busboys banging my chair every time they walked by. It seemed like everyone was having a birthday that day and the waitstaff kept singing happy birthday.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. The prices are too expensive and they need to re-train their waiters and waitresses or fire and hire better ones. They have no customer service experience and need to leave their attitudes at home.

Read some pretty good reviews about this place and went to celebrate with a group of friends. Arrived and the person at the front didn't even look up but just directed us to the back to where the rest of our group was. There were no more tables available so a waiter graciously set up another table for us to sit. After we sat down, a manager approached us and asked us why we were sitting there. He said that he had too many parties and we had to just wait until he could find a place for us to sit. He was very rude. Needless to say, we said goodbye to the rest of our group and went to eat at another restaurant where they know how to treat their customers. Will never go there again or recommend the place to anyone.

Zero class at this place and food is about street vendor quality. I am Puerto Rican and I can tell you that this place is run by people that give us all a bad name. First my wife was harassed by the door man for no reason. The staff was not accommodating at all...asked for a dish to be made without meat; they flatly refused. To add insult to injury, I was escorted to back office by a bouncer and waitress to count money and "settle our bill" ($1100 for party of 15)...unreal. Will never go back and neither should you.

My friend made reservations for her birthday for 10 of us. We were seated at a table for six!!! Needless to say we were on top of each other. During dinner my friend accidentally knocked over her wine glass and it shattered all over the table. The waiters came over and took the food away to "check for glass". They brought back the same plates with glass still all over the food! When we went to complain to the manager, Domenic Kozeli, he said "how do we know you didn't break the glass on purpose!" He is a disgrace to the restaurant business. And to top the night off - the food wasn't even good. Don't go!!!

My boo brought me here for my birthday - (which landed on a Saturday) we got there like at 8pm first the wait was 45 minutes but at least the bar wait area was cool. I felt like it was a club slash restaurant. People were hanging out and drinking while waiting for their table. So you know those in big groups stood out. I'm a Latina so I loved that they played all the top new and classic salsa, and some old school R&B joints too. I think it's a cool spot for a first date or special occassion. Not to go on a regular night that your hungry. Seems like I wasnt the only person in there whose birthday it was cause everytime my salsa came on it got interrupted by a 'Feliz Cumpleanos' theme. The food was good, fullfilling for those that dont want to feel to full afterwards. The food was good but I kinda felt rushed. Although it was only me and my boyfriend. I saw the big groups get literally pushed out. I think the food came too fast after ordering which is good but in the back of my head I wondered if it was pre-prepared.

In short, this is a nice spot for some one on one and get out of the hood. But if your spanish and want some real good spanish food just stick to mami's cooking its free and you can have seconds.

Oh almost forgot... Sancocho is translated on the menu as PUERTO RICAN STEW. I'm Dominican and I never hearded that one.

Sofrito was very disappointing as a restaurant. When a restaurant owner dedicates 2/3rds of space to a bar and has no accommodations for restaurant patrons to wait for tables that pretty much tells the whole story. It is freezing up front where there is approximately a 7ft square of space where they expect you to wait. My brother was wearing a sports jacket, shoes and a Biltmore gentlemens hat, he was immediately approached by 2 rude bouncers and told to remove his hat ( He wasn't wearing a baseball hat backwards) He advised them he just walked in and didn't appreciate being accosted in such a manner. To the right of the restaurant are benches with narrow tables in center. But dont dare sit there if you are not going to order drinks and appetizers. We sat there and were told of this rule, so we were forced to order drinks just to have somewhere to sit and wait that was not freezing. No sooner had we received our drinks from the waitress, not even taken a sip, and she was asking us if we were going to order more drinks, otherwise we would have to move,( where to I dont know since there was no space ) To make matters worse my vodka and cranberry was so watered down that it tasted like water and ice. There is literally a 2 foot walkway if your lucky from the beginning of the restaurant to the dinning area. They are constantly walking around asking if you want another drink, and obviously when you are made to wait 2 hours for a table their intent is to sell you as many drinks as possible. The music is blaring and they DJ doesnt even have the skill to mix 1 song into another. When we finally got our table we were sat directly under the speakers and could not hear each other speak. The food came fairly quickly and the waitress was very nice. Its too bad that by the time you sit down to eat you are so exhausted and annoyed at all you have to put up with to get there that you have lost your appetite. This is why they go around rushing you asking if you want to take it to go, and the reason why everybody walks out with a doggie bag. Maybe in a couple of years when the wanna-be-club phase ends, as they all do in NY, the restaurant will actually function as it is advertised and you might have a nice dinning experience.Until then only go there if you want to have a few drinks and hang out with friends, I recommend sitting on the benches and ordering appetizers ( which you have to eat as people are hovering over you and bumping into your table) and dont go there hungry. If you are looking for a nice dinning experience maybe it might be different on a weekday.

No reservations on the weekends leaves you waiting around for upwards of an hour sometimes, but enjoy the lounge seating along with some scrumptious empanadas and a caprihanna in the front bar section. You won't go wrong with just about anything on the menu whether is be a perfect churrasco steak or tender ropa vieja. The sweet plantains are off the charts! The staff is very friendly and attentive and never roll their eyes even after having to sing Happy Birthday 15 times a night.

coming from a puertorican family of wonderful cooks and chefs, i've become spoiled and have high expectations when it comes to good boricua food. after watching the play "platanos and collard greens" my mom-in-law, daughter and i decided to walk to "Sofrito" and give it a try. cons.... i tried the mofongo with shrimp, wish the mofongo had more of a garlic flavor and more pieces of pork. also, i wasn't impressed with the drinks, they were weak! the music was too loud, we couldn't hear each other speak. pros....the arroz con guandules was delicious, the gandules tasted as if they were freshly hand picked. the tostones montaditos were delicious, they're a must try! if it wasn't for the long wait, i'd go again!

Went to Sofrito after a concert.. Wrong move. Sofrito has good music which you can listen too while waiting 2 hours for a table. We waited in this little side room for the hostess to give us that machine that beeps to let you know your table is ready. Well.. we had to wait 20 minutes for that, when we finally got one, it was another 30 minutes then when they called us, the hostess had us down as a party of 2 when we were a party of five. So they told us we had to wait again until a table opened up. All of this with a reservation. I cannot comment on the food because we left without eating. The wait is absurd. They had the nerve to ask my husband to remove his fedora (yes, we were overdressed) in the resturant but I assume the jeans, t-shirts and boots others were wearing was fine. The place is too small and there are people with plates of food lined up against the walls! What in the world is that about. I see others saying that they rush you, well I can definately bellieve that. Terrible experience and I will never go there again. Take heed.....go somewhere else.

I've been to Sofrito multiple times and have never incurred any of the problems expressed by some of the other patrons. It's true that it gets extremely crowded and you have to plan appropriately when you're going there for dinner. I was ecstatic to find a Puerto Rican restaurant that served food which is not Nuevo Latino or Mexican. I would suggest that the Chef re-think some of the menu selections and be a little more true to the P.R. heritage. How can you have Mofongo without pork? The prices are extremely reasonable and it is a restaurant not a Cuchifrito place so expect to pay for a dinner. I've been there and had appetizers, dinner and dessert for two and spent less than $100. I don't know why people mention price as a CON because its a cheap compared to going to Son Cubano, Rosa Mexicana or Dos Caminos. I believe its a great place to go for dinner and the food is tasty. Make reservations and enjoy. I think the crowding issue results from it also being a hangout since they have music but its a fun place. I look forward to the new restaurant!

Pros: Food, Cheap

Cons: Crowded

the food at sofrito is excellent however you can't enjoy your it because you are rushed throughout your entire meal. as a matter of fact they are in such a hurry to clear your table the waiter dropped food on us and did NOT apologize!! the manager did not even take a glass of wine off the bill!! we were also asked to be relocated to the front of the bar while we were waiting for people to return from the restroom. this is after spending almost $800.00 there that night (party of 8). this is by far the WORST service in manhattan.

My girlfriends and I decided to go here to have a relaxing dinner to catch up on old times. Well what we thought was going to be a nice dinner turned into the most stressful eating experience of our entire lives!!!! We were seated promptly once our entire party arrived, which was great as it was getting quite crowded but once our order was placed, it was as if secret service swooped in and took the place of the waiters!!! They rushed us throught our entire dinner. At certain points we could barely finish what we had in our mouths or on our plates before they swarmed in and swiped our food! It even came to the point where one of the employees with an earpiece stood over our table and watched to see how much more we had to go!!! I ordered a sangria and I was determined to finish the entire thing, down to the fruits, but there was one blind moment and my glass was gone!! The food was great, very big portions but the service was too fast to be any good!!! No one wants to be rushed through their meal! Would not recommend AT ALL!!!

My husband and I went to Sofrito for an early New Year's Eve dinner. We had read all of the reviews prior to going but thought if we went early, the service might be better. Basically, the drinks were very good (especially the mojitos) and the food was good (although my husband thought his steak was really fatty). When it came time to pay the bill, we decided to use a $100 visa gift card we had been given, paying the rest with our credit card. The waiter came back to say that the $100 charge wouldn't go through which was strange as we had just activated it. He suggested trying $75 which worked. We paid the rest and the 20% tip with our credit card. The bottom line is we found out later that he actually charged $85, which means he added $10 as an extra tip???? My husband went back to the restaurant a few days later with proof. The manager gave him the $10 and said the waiter must have added an additional $10. There was no hassle in getting the money back but for the prices, the service should be better. We prefer Cabana on 3rd.

We went here for New Years dinner, what a mistake.

Where to start.... If you were one of the few who could check your coat congratulations! The restaurant was so disorganized it was like being on a crowded PR bus except the girls were dressed better, oh the 80's.

We were seated at our reserved table 40 minutes late and it only went downhill from there.

Our appetizers(if you were lucky to get one) came out at different times and were given to the wrong people. One in our group received her appetizer while the rest of us had finished our second course.

Because the service was so off and so late they were serving meals as the restaurant was standing and toasting when the clock struck 12'. The meals came so late and sporadically most people were no longer even interested and you had a better chance of finding a drink in the Sahara (probably cheaper too!).

The live music was entertaining but the volume throughout the restaurant was so loud you couldn't speak even with the person sitting beside you.

Oh and lucky us, we had the drunkest waitress in the place. When she wasn't falling or dancing with other patrons she would stumble by and give someone the wrong order. How she kept finding our table I'll never know. I suppose she wasn't fond of our table because it didn't have drinks or food!

They even tried to charge us for an extra person on our bill. I guesss they thought the waitress was with us since she drank, danced and ate more than any of us. I gurantee she had a better time and at least she got paid to abuse us.

All this for the bargain price of nintey dollars.

If you want lousy service, mediocre food and like getting robbed, just go to PR instead.

Pros: the Sangria and when we left.

Cons: The service, drunk waitress, cold food, loud music and having to pay 90 bucks to experience it.

The service was very poor. My group sat in the bar area and waited for service for over twenty minutes. I decided to ask the hostess if there is waitress service at the tables in the bar area. The hostess said there is waitress service but she is extremely busy. The waitress finally came over to clear the table but never returned to provide service. We decided to leave and go to a place where we can get good service. This is the second time I went to Sofritos and got bad service. In October I went with a group for dinner. We were celebrating a birthday. After our meal we wanted to continue drinking and ordered dessert. The waiter asked us if we could vacate the table after dessert and go to the bar to continue drinking. We were there to have dinner not hangout by the bar. How dare they rush us out of the table! After these two experiences this place is not worth my time. Very unprofessional and does not cater to the customers needs!!

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Unless you want someone to sit at your bar table while you wait for a dinner table. This place has EXTREMELY poor service and isn't worth your money. In this economy, there are so many other options and Sofrito's just isn't one of them.

Oh, and the manager had the nerve to SUPPORT the drunk patron who sat on our table!!!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!

One of the modern day most used words must be rude! Hell, I wish my family in Bed-Stuy back then actually knew how to spell the word:) I celebrated two daughters great days there: Birthday, NYU Graduation, Baruch Graduation for the other- wonderful food with generous portions, appetizers gone mad. Those of you who don't like fried can ask for broiled:) However, our culture is mixed and much of our food is fried. So remember that when you trek to Harlem and eat Sylvia's fat back induced concoctions! Hail to Sofrito's bringing P.R. Back!

Finally a chic Latin restaurant that isn't Mexican in the city. Well that's what I kept hearing. So although my skepticism I decided to give the restaurant a chance. So I went with a friend who had alaready been. So when I first walked in there was immidiate appreciation for the decor.
It was a Sunday night about 9:30. They were not happy to see us walking in so late. So I barely got a chance to the bar area when I first came in because the waitress sat us down so fast. Then I asked our waiter if he can tell me what on the menu was not fried. Oh boy was he rude. He looked at me and said this is a PuertoRican restaurant everything is fried!!! I couldn't believe him. I wanted to get up and live right there but I decided to breath in and just take a look at the menu myself I decided to have emapnadas to to start they were ok a bit too oily and dry, I mean considering there prices. Then had the Bistec Encebollado (sirloin steak with Onions ) pretty traditional and basic. I had asked for my steak to medium rare and it came out well done!!!
The only thing that I can recommend would be the Sangria & that's all.
And there was defiantly some yo yo people in there!!!

Went there on a friday night, we were prepared to wait, but weren't prepared to get shoved around while waiting. After standing at the bar for 30 minutes and eating an appetizer there, we finally got a seat on the couches. The waitress introduced herself and left, only to return and inform us that if we wanted to sit on the couches, we would have to order food or beverages, which we clearly already had in our hands. She said we had to move but found us other seats at the front of the restaurant, after that waitress introduced herself and we didn't order another drink right away, we were asked to move, since she had a group which wanted to order food and drinks. We wound up at standing at the bar again!!! I was ready to leave when our buzzer went off. Food was delicious and service great at the table, but be prepared to wait and get pushed around a lot.

I've been to Sofrito numerous times and everytime I go the food-without a doubt-is great. The empanadas taste just like the ones from home [Mm]...the pina coladas are really smooth [I don't like tasting the alcohol in drinks so this was right up my alley]...and the food comes out in the blink of an eye. Highly recommended..BUT I just have one story. I went yesterday and the waiter told us about a "special" so we all agreed it was what we wanted. The bill comes..and I guess I was naive to think a "special" meant not outrageously priced...wrong. Since I've been there a few times I know the menu [so-so] and the most expensive thing I noticed is maybe 20 something? Ok well this plate was about 40 or more. I was a little shocked but it was so delicious [sliced steak, rice topped with shredded coconut and shrimp in a garlic sauce] I dropped the money without a problem. We're headed out and the waiter stops us and asks if his service was ok and we reply with a simple yes. He shows us the bill and asks why we tipped him the way we did and handed it back to us and basically asked us to add more! Ok now I'm usually not a cheap tipper but I was SHOCKED. This had never ever everrrr happened to me [or any of the ppl I was with]. We added more to the bill and walked out with our mouths dropped. The nerve! Now that I think about it I should have taken the paper and written a big ZERO for tip and spoke to his manager about it...Oh! a few more things...they don't take reservations on weekends or weekdays before 7 [I think]...and it gets loud...so don't go here if you expect to have an intimate dinner. Also, a lot of people come here to celebrate their bdays...expect to hear them singing happy bday minimum of 10 times while you're here. [trust me...it happens every time I come here!]...Hope I was helpful!!!

Cons: no reservations available on weekends [expect to wait], very loud, rude waiter!

Great service, great food. However for the price you are paying they should at least let you enjoy the food.
If the food is great people will come but they should let there customers enjoy the food. They don't take reservations before 5 p.m. and they don't answer there emails either. So you can't book a reservation. Also there drinks are watered down and very expensive for just colored water. So eat drink and becareful not to get wacked with a chair when they are trying to rush you out

I went twice this year. The second time I decided to celebrate my best friends birthday with a party of 12 on a Sunday at 6pm. Of course we all arrived before 6pm and we were seated as soon as everyone was there, which was before 6pm. The service was on point. The menu was printed with Birthday wishes for my best friend! The food was delicious (esp. the Paella) and for the amount of food served the price was just right! It was a great evening and everyone loved it. I'm sure my friends, who never been, will definitely go back. They were all impressed. I was a proud party planner/host. Thanks Sofrito!

Soooo.... I heard so many great things about this place that I had to try with my bf. I'm guessing I might have caught them on a bad night...lol. For the most part this place is an awesome environment if you are looking for somewhere lively to dine. From the live salsa (with dancers as well) to the great ambiance and drinks (try the ppl mojito or the lean back; bf loved it) you can't go wrong. However everything I ordered (pernil, tostones w/shrimp and watercress salad) besides the chicken empanada (yum) was either dry or bland. With this being said, I still plan on returning because the atmosphere is so fun and inviting and besides its hard to find a hip salsa place in the city. Bottom line, go to Sofrito's if you want to drink, dance and eat yummy empanadas!

Cons: over priced for avg food.

This is a cool place to go to have drink and enjoy the music. I went with two other people. None of us enjoyed our meals. We all agreed that the food wasn't all that great especially for the price. We could have stayed in the bronx and received the same quality food at a cheaper price. The restaurant looks great, the service was good, the band/music was good although happy birthday was played ten times in the hour that we were there. But we went there for the "great food" and didn't get it. Unless there is a new chef i doubt we will be going back.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I went to this place. At first i was skeptical because I read some of the reviews but i still wanted to see for myslef. It was our first anniversay and why not!. Im glad i did, I lOVED it.. i really did. The decor is amazing, the color scheme and layout is good. The staff are super friendly, and very pleasant. You have the live band playing typical puerto rican music throughout the whole night. I order the mojitos, there pretty strong in my opioion but very good. The food. all i can say YUM-O..It was scrumbious.. The price was kinda pricey but worth every penny of it. I would go back again and you should see for yourself.

Pros: Its in the city...

Cons: We did have to wait like a good 30mins to be seated.

Went to visit this so-called "great" restaurant a few weeks ago called Sofritos but found the place to be no more than just another place to eat and drink. Of course, with the experience that we had, that's the taste we got.
Went there with a party of 7, so you'd think any establishment would welcome a big party with open arms and make sure that everyone was taken care of. Instead, we were mistakenly taken off of the list after waiting for 2 hours!!! then put back on the list, as a party of 2, instead of 7, and then finally, 4 HOURS LATER, we were seated. 4 hours later! the staff, except for one girl there, were unhelpful. They avoided us like a plague after the 4th time we calmly asked them for status, they told us to wait, and then tried to go up and down the floor, seating other guests and trying their best to avoid us.
Finally one of the owners were informed and finally he made the effort to have us seated, gave us complimentary appetizers and a round of drinks. That was definitely greatly appreciated but would definitely not give us back the 4 hours of wait time that we spent.
The food was great, but by the time we sat down to eat, after arriving there at 7:30pm, and sitting down at 12:00am, to eat a meal, just kind of hard to take.
Emailed the management, and I have yet to receive a reply from them on the horrible experience that we had at their establishment, but I guess a single party of 7 means nothing to them when you look at the 1000's that go there, but little do they know that 7 can turn into 14, 21, an 28 people by word of mouth to our friends. We have wanted to go again, but the experience was just too bad for us.

Pros: food was great, once we finally sat down after close to 5 hours of waiting..

Cons: wait time, staff(some), not worth it.

The only thing good about Sofrito is it's name. Waiting time was about
fifteen minutes but, were greeted by a rude and unprofessional staff.
The place is so LOUD that a confesation at he tiny crouded table was
not possible. Service is caos. Complained at the end of the meal and Manager was apologetic but, staff did not take responsibility for the bad service. The only people who would enjoy Sofrito are those who go
to drink and be loud themselves.

Guaranteed to get your money's worth. I had the grouper but I wouldn't recommend it because it had no flavor. They have this drink called the "lean back" and trust me after you've had one of those you will definitely be leaning back. The grouper aside I plan on going back.... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!

Just a lil FYI make sure you dress up men because the dress code is strictly enforced...

Just came back from Sofrito restaurant.. and can't tell you enough how much I enjoyed my time here with my friends. The place was beautiful, the staff was amazing, and the food???? how would i describe it???? It tastes as your favorite food from the childhood with the restaurant's touch. The portions are huge. Just amazing. The wait for a table was a bit long, but worth of waiting. Don't blame them. I came with a group of 5 people, at 7:00 PM on a Friday night. Many families were there before me, so you just have to be patient. We didn't care to wait, because they have the nicest bar in NYC. Good job Sofrito!! I am not Puerto-Rican, but I surly enjoyed the Latino atmosphere.
