It all seems cool at first- the space is usable, on the small side (800 sq ft), but the floor is gorgeous, it is heated, and the receptionist is helpful and friendly. But Dance Renter Beware: They will gladly book you in their space 1-2 months in advance, thus giving you peace of mind; they'll also gladly cancel all these bookings with a few weeks notice, leaving you frustrated and disenchanted. Seems the rentals at Chrystie St go to the highest bidder.
The director, Melissa, called me personally to tell me most of my pre-booked rehearsals, 4 out of 6 to be specific, had been cancelled to "honor" someone renting the space to teach class. The word honor is a bit ironic. So why the cancellation for my rehearsals? The other renter had put down a depo$it. Seems the friendly receptionist forgot to inform me of this option, although she wasn't so forgetful when it came to emailing my invoice, and requiring payment for this invoice in full up front. Melissa also informed me that she believed three weeks was "more than enough notice" to cancel rehearsal bookings. Well, as anyone renting space in nyc knows, most spaces book on the first of the month for the next month (ie, Jan 1 books for Feb). Three weeks out and you're lucky if you're able to find anything. Better pack for Bushwick.

Moral: Rent somewhere else for your rehearsals! Sure, it's hard economic times for everyone, but we as a dance community must remain supportive of one another. Give your rental money to someone who supports dance and books its space honestly and decently.
