I don't know how comfortable I would be about taking a recommendation from a parent who sends his children to a program he "...never understood". I can only tell you that my child's experience was extremely negative. After being exposed to the instruction there, my child simply dreaded going to school each morning at Huntington Montessori. That is not to say that there weren't any positives- the principal obviously cares about the students and the school, field trips were well done, art and music were engaging. I think the school may have lost it's way when it moved to the campus with the Long Island School for the Gifted. Feeling increasing pressure to compete, they abandoned the focus on Montessori to push academics instead.

I have had the priviledge of having all my children go through the program and I thought it was excellent. When I first heard about Montessori I was skeptical, my wife insisted that I go and see the program and I did. I never quite understood how it all works but I can tell you that all my sons have had a great experience. Their math skills are great and the they have a great understanding of the world and all the people around us.
My children are compassionate and caring and they volunteer every year. All these traits and work habits were created at this school. My children all are different and they all learn different and Montessori helped them all be different. They follow the child...If your child needs more they do everything possible to get them there.
I have always been happy with the program, if you want your children to be confident, independent and love school then I recommend a Montessori School it can work for all types of children.

not a good choice for a montessori private school. why? well...
1. not a true individualized learning pace or experience- every student does same homework, tasks are all same. the only "choice" is the order in which the tasks are done
2. developmentally inappropriate tasks- kindergarteners do wonderful science experiments but then are expected to write out entire procedure- what is the point of that? copying out up to or more than four pages of everything that they did doesn't help them to understand the experiment any better
3. inability to tailor curriculum to individual children- this is a school where, God as my witness, I was told "children do not want to be different". that meant they could not make accomodations or tailor the curriculum to fit the needs of my child. what kind of montessori school doesn't embrace difference?
4. inability to understand learning disabilities or react to them
all in all, a terrible experience. if you consider this school, ask them a million questions- how exactly will they benefit your child, can they show you individualized work, what will they do if your child is different- I'll bet you they can't answer directly and will just give you the blurbs on the website over and over
