Nestled in the heart of Nolita, Ueno offers a soothing respite in it's design and approach. Owner Yoko Ueno has realized a long-standing ambition to bring together simplicity of concept with sophistication of execution, creating a salon setting that expresses a truly international sensibility. Ueno exclusively carries the complete line of Malin & Goetz skincare and hair products as well as offering the traditional services of cuts, coloring, highlights, and perms. We now also have a new location in the East Village (Profile available on Citysearch).

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
The vanilla-chocolate color scheme is just a taste of this salon's sweet cafe ambience. A stylish Soho clientele awaits appointments by the front window, browsing a collection of vintage, modern and foreign fashion mags at a cozy two-seat bistro table. Across the room at three open cutting stations, stylists coif their own confections on clients--be it a cut, color, highlights or a perm--while ambient electronica whispers down from the ceiling.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - In addition to standard salon services listed on its menu, Ueno also offers glossing and straightening treatments.
  2. The Extras - The subway-tiled reception counter offers complimentary teas and Japanese candies.

friendly staff, good cuts :)

by moila

superb service, uses good products, has a nice system that keeps track of regular customers and their needs! My haircut last week was quite good, and I had a very pleasant time chatting with the staff. It may not be the place to go if you want an extremely stylized hair cut, but they defintely know how to do hair well.

Pros: tea service, attentive staff, nice decor

Amazing cut!

by nyctransplant008

I just went to Ueno for the first time this weekend and I selected it after doing a little internet research. Junko did my cut and it was AMAZING! She made sure to sit me down and ask exactly what i wanted a few different times just to make sure the length was what i had in mind. The cut was absolutely perfect, she angled it and layered it perfectly. (My hair is past my shoulders and the cut was $70 plus tip). The only downside for this salon is the atmosphere- its strictly for those that want an amazing cut and nothing else. Its tiny and looks like someones basement, so if you are looking for a spa-like atmosphere go somewhere else, However, the cuts are amazinggggg and if you can overlook the non-spa like atmosphere, its definitely worth it!

Relaxing and a great cut

by slsfitz

I had a wonderful time! It was 90 something degrees out and i was hot and exhausted. I was given a wonderful shampoo and head massage. It cooled me right down and was so relaxing. Machiko cut my hair, and spend a good hour meticulously cutting and styling. I loved the result.

Pros: Relaxing Environment, great cut

First timer and definitely pleased with Machiko!

by bklyndc

The usual routine for me after a haircut is to: bawl about how terrible it looks, wait a few months for it to completely grow out, then wait as long as possible before i have to get back into the sick cycle of haircuts. I've been hopping around trying to find a stylist that won't make me miserable for the next three months, and i think I've found her. Machiko was super attentive to how i described the quirks of my hair, what i specifically didn't and did want out of my cut without having a definite idea of what i wanted. She soaked it all up and returned with a few cut ideas. I approved one and she went at it. Now, I've never been a fan of short cuts because my facial structure is round. i didn't want to look like a tennis ball face. However, after she explained every little detail of what she was going to perform, i felt reassured that this was a joint effort and not just her chopping my hair off. There were no surprises, except for how ridiculously pleased i was. i ended up with a cute chin length bob that didn't round my face. It's a versatile style with no fuss that can go upscale or casual with a little styling putty. I'm not used to paying so much for cuts (wash, cut, blowdry came out to be $70 and change, then you have to tack on a tip, and i needed to cab it there in order to make the appointment time) but i think it was definitely worth it for a full fledged style change. For a touch up, perhaps a cheaper place may work out. However, I've been completely wowed and will definitely return.

Pros: Machiko is very sweet and a great stylist! You are served tea and they actually have a menu to chose from. they use great shampoo and conditioners

Cons: location, not really a con but it's a pretty small salon (i'm used to big and spacious)

Would not make an appointment for me!

by fresher

I was looking for a new hair salon, I haven't been too happy with anyone one salon recently to stick with them. I spent a few days reading reviews of hair salons downtown. I did my research, and decided on which salon and which stylist i was going to choose. I finally decided on Ueno Salon, and wanted to try Yoko who was highly recommended. When I called them up and told the receptionist that I'd like to make an appointment with Yoko the same day, she said no problem what time is good for you- we are very open today. So i asked for a 1:00 appt. and she then asked if i had been there before. I said no, my first time but i heard very good things. The receptionist proceeded to tell me, that there were no appointments fro her beacuse Yoko was not accepting any new clients! Was I calling a doctor and trying to get my insurance to pay for it??!! I couldn't believe that she went from- we are very open today, to no you cannot come here because Yoko would rather not work than accept a new client! Very disappointing after reading all the reviews. I walk by the salon everyday, and now it makes sense why I always see the hair stylists sitting around reading magazines and standing outside.

Wonderful

by aspy

Only after getting a truly atrocious cut at a well-reviewed place, do I realize what I've found here. So what if the cut took sort of longer than I expected, or that the stylist didn't completely explain what he was going to do before starting. The product was amazing. I went to Ueno in September, after a brutal hair butcher cut off nearly half of my hair, utterly miserable and convinced there was no way to fix that mess up. Well, somehow, it was fixed. I think the process showed true talent and imagination. The reason the cut took a bit longer was because the stylist would stop after every few snips, in the beginning, to look at where he was going. The style I left with was the most flattering my hair has ever been. I was an idiot not to go back (hey, I have to transfer trains to get to Ueno).

Pros: Patient, talented staff; cozy atmosphere; tip envelopes! I can't stand places where the staff hang over your shoulder, waiting for a tip--I love the discretion of Ueno.

Cons: None, it's cheap, it's cute, it's fabulous

I went to Ueno for the first time and had a great experience. Naomi really knows what she is doing and is very attentive. I had color, highlights and haircut and it was not so expensive. Will come back again!
Arigatou gozaimashita! :)

Pros: Ambience, Naomi and Refreshing shampoo.

Cons: bad light to see haircolor results

my first over $50 haircut

by dwillington

$65 to be exact, $75 with tip. I liked it. I got great treatment, the haircut lasted at least 30 min's, which is great because a lot of time was spent on me. My eyebrows were trimmed for me, and just the way I like it. The cut was great, and the lady was nice to talk to (although couldn't speak English perfectly, but we managed). They also offer tea, and other extras while you're getting cut.

I might go back again, but I'm more of a $20 haircut person. Which doesn't always leave me with a good cut. This cut was dead on, I feel great.

What a gem!

by enfantterrible

I just came back from Ueno on 9th street, and I absolutely love my hair. Eiko was my stylist, and she was attentive and knowledgeable, without any pressure to buy anything--greatly appreciated!

I love my hair and my new (dark) color--very stylish.
The aromatherapy and hot towels after the shampoo was very relaxing.
It was quiet and friendly, I felt very relaxed--I will go back, no doubt (and all that for only $90!)

Highly recommended!

Pros: Relaxing, pleasant, elegant, skilled hair stylists

Cons: It takes a while...but it's worth it!

Worst haircut of my life!!!!

by fr808to212

At first the stylist seemed nice, but when she started cutting, I could tell that she wasn't making it the way that I wanted it to look. I brought a picture to make it easier to show her what I wanted, then was telling her what I wanted, then she was very quick with her mouth and cut me off in saying, "Will you let me cut?" I DID tell her I didn't like it, then she got very defensive with me. I'm surprised I even tipped her just to be polite! It looks nothing like the picture I brought and now cutting off 10" I have to wait a while until it grows back to fix it. Would NOT recommend to ANYONE!!!

An Experience to Remember

by cherrydust

Walking by the salon for the first time I thought I might have been in Paris for a moment. The understated decor was accentuated by the larger than life mirrors, leaning against the walls in front of every chair. My stylist was Miki and it's seems he previously had Shiatsu training because just getting a shampoo and rinse was an experience in it's self. I've had scalp massages before from Japanese salons but this went above and beyond. Once the hot towels (with a drop of aromatherapy) are placed over your face you just want to curl up and fall asleep. Then there's the hot towel ear massage. When we finished at the shampoo station I realized we had just begun...my haircut still awaited. Miki was meticulous and thorough leaving me with a fantastic haircut. Then there came the neck and shoulder massage...the experience was too good to be true.

I love it when my hair gets long

by the_nearest_oak

Saw this little gem while walking down the street and, while I didn't need a haircut at the time, I had get a business card for the next time I needed a haircut. I'm very glad I did. They are super hip and elegant at the same time. I was offered a menu of hot teas to choose from while I waited for my appointment ( I was early) and was put at ease from the relaxing environment. Yoko was my stylist and was the complete professional. My haircut ruled!!!!!! and even got a wonderful little neck massage. I can't wait to go back!

Pros: relaxing, wonderful service, very pleasant staff, excellent haircut

Diamond in the rough-amazing staff and treatment for an amazing price!

by jobot

So, I went in today per recommendation of a friend because there are just TOO many choices anymore, and my last hairdresser always moves and losses me.
Anyway, I was looking forward to jazzing up my long grown out style, and this was the place to go. The neighborhood is awesome to walk around in, the place is small with that lazy Sunday afternoon calm to it. The decor is homey, simple and a little rustic and the music was great.
What BLEW ME AWAY though, was the attention! Junko cut my hair, and she listened to exactly what I wanted and executed it perfectly. She really took her time from shampooing to making sure every layer and angel was matching and textured. I was even offered a selection of teas while I waited! The girls running shop are SO sweet and took care of my every need.
The whole experience cost just a little over $60 (for the value of service, I would expect it to be more), but I was so impressed I made sure I threw in a healthy tip.
Skip the bullsh*t chain places like "Dramatics" that lay it on way too thick, and go for the real deal. What a find!

Pros: Inexpensive, amazing service, treated like a queen

Cons: None

Tiny and cute to boot! Found by chance while out walking my dog....

by lillyofthevalley

I was frazzeled..booking a last minute appointment out of sheer desperation ( I had a hot date and my regular colorist couldn't squeeze me in!?) The lovely ladies at Ueno sweetly accomadated me on the spot!
Although it was last minute and I was so stressed out, from the moment I sat down in the chair
I instantly began to feel relaxed!...Chet Baker krooned away softly behind me, and Yoko herself looked after my color! In the two hours I spent in Ueno, I walked out feeling like I had spent the whole day at the spa! I FELT GREAT! With a bounce in my step later that night, my date actually asked me, "who does your hair? I LOVE it!" Okay so I gave him her card, thinking she could work her magic fingers through his hair too. (god knows he kinda needs it!) What happened by chance is now my new neighborhood favorite!

Pros: convenient, affordable, stylish, great coffee, and the shampoo massage - exhilirating!

Cons: none

just cant get ENOUGH!!!

by alivingstone

im in finance and reside in nolita. the stress levels are off the charts! uneno is my favorite place to go for what i need; relaxtion and to look good. i manage to visit at least three times a month, just getting a trim and an occassional highlight. i go to both locations because i just cant get enough of the staff and the service. on the verge of harraassment, i get endless amounts of compliments on my hair. part of me thinks, why tell anyone my secret? i want ueno all to myself. but, of course, something this good even brings out the sharing in me.

Pros: yoko ueno (stunning), one just feels special there.

Cons: absolutely zero!

ueno is by far, hands down, the most amazing salon i have been to. the atmosphere is striking with a subdued modern minimilism that enhances tranquility while circumventing excess. the staff - subtle, soft spoken, and prudent. and did i mention, absolutely gorgeous! the service is meditative and relaxing. and uenos ability with hair is masterful. uneno is more than just a salon, its a zen-like prodigious experience without the exorbinant expense. oh, the coffe and tea is splendid.

Pros: intimate and thoughtful

Cons: i can only go three times a week.

by ghostsis

I live in DC, but I travel all the way up to NYC just to get my hair cut at Ueno Salon. I absolutely LOVE it there. From the ambiance (classy and chic) to the people (friendly and knowledgeable), I finally found the only place I'll get my hair done. People think I'm crazy for driving all the way up every time I want a hair cut, but once they see my hair, THEY want to go up too! I've been to both the Nolita and East Village locations, and I love them both. I wish they'd open another one down here!

Pros: service, friendliness, SKILLS!

UPDATE: Never going back to Ueno

by minouche

Just wanted to include an update on my review posted on 3/24/2007. In short, I'm never going back to Ueno. I gave my hair a couple of weeks to look better after the new cut, and it never materialized. Sad to say, but the stylist I saw (Junko) does not have good hair cutting technique. My hair looks unhealthy, and doesn't fall straight. Her bad cutting technique has caused my hair to take on a change in texture, where several strands of hair are sticking out and it's impossible to style these individual strands flat. I wear my hair up in a ponytail now because I'm so embarrassed to leave it down.

Go to Ueno at your own risk and especially beware of Junko. You'd be better off getting your haircut somewhere else.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Horrible cutting technique

Best Haircut!

I'm usually very wary about trying new salons, but based on the reviews here, I decided to give Ueno a shot. I didn't really have an idea of what I wanted, but Yoko sat with me and really listened to what I thought. I came out of Ueno with the best haircut I've had in years!! Yoko's technique was great and I would definitely go back!

Pros: Atmosphere, technique, products used

Cons: NONE

very satisfied

by jullethan

Generally, I'm not very fond of asian salons because I would always leave with a butchered haircut and money down the drain. But after my friend had suggested it and after reading the reviews on citysearch, I decided to give Ueno a shot. My stylist was Machiko, and not only was she sweet and very polite, she listened to what I had wanted, and offered her suggestions as well. She spent well over an hour and half on my hair and in the end, it was perfect. The long layers in the back were not choppy; barely noticeable (for a girl with a long, thick mane, tying up her hair is no longer a headache). The front layers were very flattering to my face again; not too choppy. Anyway, for those who want to get a b8ng for their buck, this salon is it.

Pros: Affordable cut

Wouldn't go back

by topflitegirlny

Several weeks ago, based on the reviews on citysearch, I booked an appointment at Ueno Salon for a haircut. The haircut I got was so amateurish, not to mention rushed. At the end of the cut, I was surprised to see that my hair was not styled -just shellaqued with product and seeing my obvious disappointment, I was told by the stylist that I didn't have enough hair to make a style. My hair is long -at the time up to my mid-back. I don't know how much more hair she required to "make a style". The ends were blunt and uneven. And when I discovered that I didn't have enough cash to leave a tip, I asked for the nearest ATM. The stylist proceeded to turn to her Japanese coworker and say " I can't believe she didn't know to bring cash for a tip" in Japanese- although I spoke English during my appointment, I am fluent in Japanese.
I had been going to an upscale salon for over 8 years, but thought I'd try something new and less expensive. My thriftiness backfired! The next day I called my regular salon (which is 4 times as expensive) and had my cut fixed. He was able to "create a style" - expensive but worth every penny. I will never make the same mistake!

Let's see... which part do I like best? The complimentary gourmet tea selection? The great smelling candles? The PILES of international fashion magazine mixed in with vintage Vogue? The airiness of the open space? The great hair cut or maybe it's the $65 price tag that made it the cherry on top? I am not sure but I know for a fact that I'll be back!!!!

Best haircut EVER!

by abfabgirl

At my age (33) I've had a lot of different hairstyles and stylists - some good, some not so good. I went to Ueno for the first time recently after reading all of the rave reviews on Citysearch. I'm always a bit skeptical of super positive reviews, but these reviews are absolutely genuine. I have never in my life gotten such an amazing haircut! The cut I wanted was kind of complicated, but my stylist knew exactly what to do and the precision of the cut is incredible. Every strand just falls into place after washing. I am thrilled with the results! Not only do these stylist know what they are doing, but the salon has a friendly and funky vibe to it that makes the whole experience 5 stars!

Pros: Technique, atmosphere, competitive prices

Cons: Not across the street from my apartment.

Sub-par experience

by hello_soho

I'm a twenty year old student, but Yoko gave me a haircut of a 40 year old businesswoman -not the look I was hoping for. Although it's a nice haircut, it's not fitting for my lifestyle or hair texture, which in my opinion are two crucial parts to a quality salon experience. Unfortunately she did not focus on what was discussed during the consultation- I stressed that I never blowdry my hair and I prefer to wear it wavy, yet she blowdried it straight and then proceeded to cut un-flattering layers (my hair is 4 inches below my shoulders and the top layers are 2 inches long total).

Pros: head massage, nice products, relaxing atmosphere

Cons: does not follow directions, disregards consultation

I went into this salon with very little idea of what I wanted. I told them I wanted something completely different but that low-maintenance is essential. I walked out with the best cut ever! It is very chic and professional and yet incredibly cute. And the best thing is I spend all of 2 seconds on it every morning! I just shower and go! And I get compliments all the time. They gave me more than I could have ever expected! Oh...and not only is the cut great, but the salon itself is amazing. So cute and classy. And everyone there is super nice. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!

the most satisfying haircut

by nephalim13

this is my 1st time to ueno. i brought a pic of some cosplay wig to Yoko (u can imagine...) since my hair was much shorter than the picture shown, i explained to her the main thing i want from the hair, and left her decide on the rest. the hair came out a bit bulkier than i expected due to my massive amount of hair, but Yoko had it carried out the way no other stylists i'd been to could do, no matter how much i explained to them. She would not be conservative and make me look like anyone else on the street. She has a lot of patience to listen, to read, and to understand what i need and ask for. She also would explain to me what she's doing on the way, and she doesn't use a lot of hair products on me. She's the greatest!!

Pros: Skill, communication, warm atmosphere, friendly attitude

Cons: havn't noticed any

Elegant and Stylish

by funky_monkey_

Ueno's space in Nolita creates a relaxed and elegant environment to have your treatment of choice. More importantly however, is the quality of the cut you will get and the service they provide. Yoko has cut my hair several times and I think she is both respectful of my hair and also has ideas for me when I sit down in the chair without a clear vision of what I want. The Malin & Goetz products they use are just another treat.
Further, I think they are the most accomodating and genuine people I have ever delt with in this particular industry. If they anticipate you waiting for more than a minute, they won't hesitate to offer you a cup of tea or coffee. The price is comparable to most salons as well. Highly recommended.

Pros: evening hours, fantastic cuts, very professional

Cons: Can't think of any

i had my haircut with the very lovely Shin-
i asked for a minimal refinemenent and trim and some styling/shortening on my fringe/bangs- he got it completely. he was patient and sweet and easy going, i got a very nice treatment along with the overall beauty and ambience of the salon. he gave me the impression at first that he is not very confident but he simply had the mellow and sophisticated Japanese quality and attitude-i got all the time possible to completely get what would made me happy and satisfied- respecting my standards. he was open at every suggestion i had- we had our laughs and easygoingness that u don't get in other salons lost in the overqualified/overated attitude and style of other stylists and hairsalons. i am utterly appease with all from the very first moment and after a week passed. my hair feel great-no single imperfection

Pros: atmosphere, attitude, skill and price

Cons: not a single one

Yoko does the best haircuts! I don't do anything to crazy with my hair, so neither does she -- but I don't look exactly ordinary either. Sometimes I go in with only a rough idea of what I want. Yoko listens and reliably comes up with something fitting my description -- and surpassing my expectations. She's capable, patient, and pleasant. You won't feel rushed, and you'll appreciate the care she puts into her work. You are virtually guaranteed to look much better leaving her salon than you did walking in. Highly recommended.

More than meets the eye.

by blueberrygirl9

Working in the neighborhood I would walk by every so often past the salon, intrigued with the decor. It reminded me of an old film possibly taking place in some far off european town... but yet it had a modern mood to it as well. At first one might think it to be a cafe of some sort since there's a bar counter with an old vintage refrigerator. But that's before you notice the cutting chairs. I finally went in for a haircut not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised when the experience surpassed my expectations. The stylist was very accomodating and the mood inside was very relaxing. I smiled to myself when some tourists walked in (european nonetheless) and commented on the decor.

no kiddin - Refined edgy style

by ellea

Super impressed and utterly satisfied. Best cut and color. I chose Ueno for the neighborhood, but was curious from all the great reviews in Citysearch and well, Ueno doesn't dissapoint, rather lifts you to the next level of expectations; happiness, so I felt compelled to write my own extolation. Refined, comfortable, stylish; much like my new hairstyle, which, by the way grabs many compliments. I must say, I look damn good, so thank you, and thanks you for the great coffee. No kiddin. (It wasn't difficult getting an appointment, but the place is getting much busier, so I'd get in soon before the mad rush this place is destined for)

Pros: fair prices, soothing atmosphere, great hood

A MUST!!!

by ocdgr

Do I ever love coming to Ueno Salon! It's one of those places that you want to tell everyone about and keep to yourself at the same time. As much as I might want to keep this amazing place my own big secret, it's impossible! I always come out with such a great cut and style that everyone asks me where I got it done. The stylists are talented and friendly....the interior is beautifully designed: simple yet classic...the coffee, tea and biscotti delicious...the vintage magazines classy. You must try it out...you'll fall in love!

santa fe to UENO.

by chohyun

i flew in to new york last weekend to visit some friends. my hair, though short, was absolutely disastrous. i live in new mexico and the damn state has been in its fifth year of drought. very dry, very bad for hair. short OR long. my friends recommended, "the oasis that is, UENO". as soon as i stepped inside, it was like my scalp and all its follicles KNEW they were going to be treated well. the scalp was right and the follicles were reborn. UENO should be a church because they're saving hair.

Oh Yoko!

by wendymeiling

Owner/stylist Yoko Ueno is like a little elf jumping around you, cutting your hair as you sit comfortably in her beautiful and understated salon, sipping fresh coffee and reading a 1950's Vogue. When she's done, you step out into Nolita looking glamourous and get compliments for months!

Pros: professional, relaxing, good music & magazine

J'LOVE!

by minicrisp

One of my fav's in the city. Where else is it possible to be served yummy coffee with biscotti, Mariage-Frere teas, blow your credit limit on amazing Malin & Goetz products, read vintage Vogue and the latest Japanese fashion magazines all while you're getting your hair did by hottie Yoko?! That's what I call multi-tasking! AND their prices are super reasonable. This spot is a gem, tell everyone... wait maybe not... I want it to be my little insider secret...

Pros: great 'hood, great value, lovely interior
