Please keep way of this place. We made reservations, we were told if we show the dinner bill we don't have to pay admission for dancing. Not true at all. Ok, we paid. BUT getting inside, they said it is MANDATORY to check your jacket,

3 stars. I went to this place one time. The decor is nice. The drinks are good as well. The food. ehh. The steak I ordered was medium well. When I bit into it it was RUBBER!!! I couldn't chew it. Took me a good 3 min. to chew one bite.

This place is horrible. It gets so crowder that it gets dangerous. If there is a fire I don't know how people are getting out. It took me 10 minutes to get a drink and the bartender ignores people. They need better management and better training. Don't waste your money here.

Been here a few times. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. I love the atmosphere. And the food is very tasty. But, don't go if you're hungry. First you have to wait at least 45 minutes for a table (if you're lucky). Unless you know the manager, then you get seated right away. Second, the service is extremely slow. We didn't get water until we got up to ask for some and then our orders weren't taken until a half hour after we were seated. Then our appetizers come a half hour after we ordered. Then after our appetizers were cleared away, our entrees didn't come out until a half hour later. I know they're very busy, but that is ridiculous. Third, the portions are very small. The appetizers are tasting size and the entrees are appetizer size. And top it off, the drinks were watered down. After nine drinks, three appetizers, three entrees and two desserts, we still had to go to McDonald's two hours later. This is coming from someone who wears sizes 2-4 so you can't say I'm a big person who needs more food.

I lived in Washington Heights for a long time, and have always loved Mamajuana's (definitely try the Sangria!!) Now that I live in Brooklyn, I love it even more. I always bring my out of town friends here (even though many of them are from Miami and have been to the one there) and go often on dates. The environment is great, and they are always busy, so a quick turnaround is the name of the game. The food is nothing short of amazing, and I can not think of a time when I did not enjoy going there. It is definitely worth the ride in from Brooklyn!

The decor is nice and welcoming but once we sat at our table points were automatically deducted. No free starters and no drink specials. I asked the bartender if they had any drink specials and he looked at me like I was an idiot. The drinks were watered down and we had to request them to add more alcohol. One of the hostesses was complaining about how we were still at the table when they had people waiting...We still hadn't finished our bottle of wine! Surprisingly I was the only one in the group that liked the food, to the others it was mediocre at best. Oh, the waiter didn't even refill my water! The gratuity of 18% is added to the bill which in this case was not earned. The reason we went there was because of good things said by word of mouth, but you won't see any of us in that place again!

Cons: Service, hostest was rude, price

So my friend and I had heard about this place and popped in last nite for a bite. Great outdoor seating, which was taken so we were holding out for a table to enjoy the full experience of the place, and it was a beautiful nite. So we go inside to have a drink at the bar while we wait. I look over and THE BIGGEST EFFIN COCKROACH YOU EVER WANT TO SEE runs right across the room, under some unsuspecting diners table. I was like OMG! My friend didnt see it so hes like, no big deal. A few minutes later its back, running across the middle of the floor. He sees it, jumps up and squashes it! Gross! \n\n\nNow granted it could have come in from outside and is not necessarily indicative of the cleanliness of the kitchen or restaurant itself, but the thing is, you just dont know. And it wasnt running FROM the outside, but as if it came from somewhere in the back. Disgusting. So we declined to eat there and the manager came over asking what happened and promised us their kitchen was very clean, blah blah. He should have offered up free drinks or entrees. If ever there was an instance where you would comp someone that would have been it. I may not have taken the offer but it would have been a good show of customer service. So between the GINORMOUS cockroach and the poor managerial save, I dont think I will try this place out ever, sadly.

Amazing!!!! \r\nWhen my non-Dominican friends ask me for good Dominican food this is where I take them. Everything in the Menu' is great, makes me proud to be Domiminican. I've been to the one in Miami and the food is great there too. \r\nThe other thing is that they actually have Brugal which is the best rum ever!

I took my mom and her friend to this restaurant to check out a different type of restaurant and we were not disappointed! You could say it was her Mother's Day gift even though it was actually the day before Mother's Day. I figured it might be too packed on Sunday, so taking her the day before would be a wise move.\n\nThe food we ordered was a sampler appetizer and also a main course seafood combination that were both delicious and fulfilling. I had that mamajuana mojito which tasted great and gave me a nice buzz as well. :-) My mom had the sangria and she liked it, while my mom's friend just had a beer.\n\nMy mom and her friend enjoyed the restaurant very much because we went on a beautiful night and we got to dine outside the restaurant and enjoy the cool breeze and overall night time atmosphere.\n\nFor those complaining on the long wait, well you need to think about this. Maybe you need to get a reservation beforehand because when you analyze it, Mamajuana is a not that big of a restaurant in size and there is apparently a high demand to eat there. So when you factor into the equation of going there on a popular night to go out eating (Friday & Saturday night), a long wait should be expected. Olive Garden in Times Square is a longggggg wait time and that restaurant is pretty big!\n\nAnyway, I would tell all the people who are reading these reviews to just go to the restaurant and experience it for yourself. \n\nJust remember to accommodate yourself to get parking at a garage and to choose WHEN you go WISELY, so that you don't have to wait more than you would like.\n\nI guarantee you that once you experience the food and drinks there, you will LOVE IT!

Cons: Finding parking can be annoying...

Mamajuana has the best tapas and sangria around! \n\nSaturday nights get a little busy and sometimes that makes the service slow. But it's worth the wait. Make a reservation and it's even better!\n\nThe atmosphere is classy but casual. Beautiful decor.\n\nALL the food is here is great! Especially the empanadas!!!

Mamajuana serves a great variety of tasty tapas. There is everything you can think of. The Mamajuana Cocas are awesome! The restaurant is great and very relaxing. You don't have to wait long, and the wait staff is very attentive. If you like tapas, this is the hidden gem! Great experience all around.\r\n

I went there recently and it definitely adds more flavor to the neighborhood. I tried the sampler and it priced about $35 a bit pricey but the food was good filled w/ Tapas, shrimp, chicken and platano maduro topped with which seemed to be bacalua (codfish)..yum! Average meals costs around $25, appetizers $10.

I usually go there for sun brunch with live flamenco and it's not bad. but boy sat nights are dif. i was with a friend and little did we know we were in for a third world experience. Everytime i go they make us wait like an hr for a table we lost track of time talking at the bar and they made us wait for 2hrs, and that's because we went to ask. The girl had a list but she had forgoten us! we finally get seated and the waiter tells us we can only order appetizers because they too many big parties and they RAN OUT OF FOOD FOR MAIN COURSE!! after processing that we decided to order appetizers, but that's not all! 5 min later the mngr says he's very sorry but we can't eat at all THERE WAS NO GAS!!!(third world or what?) they funny thing is that emmidiately after he left our table the couples to my right and left got their food, steak and salmon. i called the mngr again and he just had no idea how they had gotten their food! this place has no idea how to run a business, they have favoritism when deciding how fast they sit you and how well they treat you. they don't deserve my money. im dominican and at walking distance but i won't be eating there again.

I went to Mama Juanas for a birthday last year in Ocotober of 2007 the food and drinks were definitely amazing, and our portions were very plentiful. I have to admit we were a huge group and paid a lot of money for all the food and drinks that we purchased but we were also basically asked to skiddadle after we paid. \r\nAs far as the most previous review 5/2008 maybe your experience was not so great for the day you went in Mother's Day? Really?!! As far as training the wait staff to speak English isn't that like an ignorant person to request the easiest route for themselves you are going to experience a different culture without having to travel learn a little bit of the language you may have enjoyed your over all experience. I would definitely go again. My coworkers and I are actually planning an after work drinks and dinner there soon. I will write another review then too. Let's see if I agree with the most recent review of this place or not. I hope its a no!!

A friend wanted to take me to this place on Dyckman she swore to me was the best for my birthday dinner. We arrived at Mamajuana's and were told it wld be a 30 minute wait to be seated. That ws at 6:50 pm. It was Mothers Day so naturally there were large parties waiting to be seated. Understood, but the staff and mgmt was totally unprepared to handle this rush of business apparently. We went to the super crowded bar only to be ignored by the barstaff. I guess firing off a round of shots in the air would get one of these bar people to acknowledge you and ask for your order. After 40 mins, no table. We checked w/the hostess. She was overwhelmed and told us 15 mins. We waited and waited. At 8:20pm(!) we were seated in the middle of the place w/traffic of staff and people bumping into us at any given time. I noticed I 4got 2 get my credit card back from the bar tab, so i get up to get my card back from the bar. The same girl who took my order and card, suddenly cldnt spk enuf English to understand she still had my card. A bi lingual waiter helpd me get my card back! Thank God! We had the crabcakes[nothing but MrsPaul frozen] and the paella[average, small 30$??] We wanted the roast pork but get this- -they ran out of RICE!! in a Spanish restaurant? Unheard of! Just like the other bad reviews, we were barely done eating before we were asked to PAY UP and GET OUT! Terrible..bubble gum staff, average small portion food, etc. PAY ATTENTION TO THESE BAD REVIEWS-they mean something. The reg clients feel like becuz this is a local spot they 'run' this joint. This place is desparate to give off some type of gourmet 5star image, but does nt hv the chops 2 pull it off. Advice: Crowd control, basic customer service-train ur staff ENGLISH, improve the cooking and maybe people will return, which builds your business. I for one will NOT be back 2 see if any changes are implemented. I ll be eating at Mofongo down the street.

I have been meaning to go to Mamajuana's for some time now. I love that it is a hip new restaurant in Inwood, but because of some of the reviews have been very hesitant to go. Finally the opportunity arises and I make reservations. To give credit where it is due -we were promptly seated and the wait staff, food and drinks were amazing (strong and delicious) try the Mamajuana mojito! It was a really amazing dining experience- up until the very end. Minutes after we paid the check, we were asked to leave so that they can accommodate others! I was appalled- especially after the money we had spent! You'd think they'd let you finish your coffee and at least use the bathroom. I mean I was still putting on my coat when they literally took the table away. I understand about the turn around and everything but that is no way to build a clientele, if they were in that desperate need of the table and could not wait the additional 10-15 minutes they could have at least ask us to move to the bar, anything ! With those actions they basically told us ?We?ve got your money, now get the F*%@ OUT! Truly a shame- if it were not for that part of the evening I'd recommend it to everyone. I should have heeded the warnings from the reviews.

As I read some of the comments on this restaurant I was extremely surprise. I've been to Mamajuana at least 5-6 times with a different crowd each time and on different days of the week and my expirience has always been great. I don't have anything bad to say about the place (well, on Sat nights it can get really crowded and the wait is long if you have no reservations.). I LOVE IT!!! The food is fantastic..best ""pudin the pan"" I've had in ages. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is fantastic! I am sorry for the people whose expirience has been less than great, but to me the place kicks *&%$.!

I have been to mamajuana a few times and loved the atmosphere, but i must say i went to dinner last night and was disappointed in the service. For a restaurant that has so much to offer the community, the service has gone down hill. i hope the owner or manager takes these reviews into consideration and invests more time in hiring the correct staff or train their current servers to do a better job. a customer should not have to wait to the middle of their meal to be served water, and someone should stop by every so often and make sure that everything is ok. customer service definitely needs improvement!!!

I invited a girlfriend out for dinner with the hopes of celebrating her birthday at mamajuanas. The night started off well. We were seated promptly, our meal was delivered in a timely manner and the food was decent (although a bit overpriced).Unfortunately things turned sour about 2/3 into our meal when I noticed the manager started to make frequent stops at our table, eyeing the progress we had made on our meal and asking if we needed anything else. At first I felt it was good customer service, but then it became clear he was trying to rush us out of our table. It came to the point that just a few minutes after we had finished our last sip of sangria, he quickly delivered the check and basically kicked us out. I am not exagerating! It was awful and by far my worst dining experience to date. I will never sponsor this establishment again.

It pains me to write a bad review of this restaurant because in theory this place is exactly what this neighorhood needs. But in reality, I had one of the most awful dining experiences possible. The food was ok, the ambience was ok, but all hope and expectations of wrapping up a lovely evening on a good note were dashed when the manager asked us to leave because ""there were people waiting for a table."" Mind you, we had signed the check not even 5 minutes before, and we were getting ready to leave. I must say that once he realized his mistake, the manager did come back and offered us was a drink by the bar but by then it was too late. We were too upset by having been kicked out to acccept his olive branch.

I've been to the restaurant 3 times already, and I must say I can never get sick of it!! Food is always amazing there, my favorite is the paella. They change their menu seasonally and there are specials everynight. Service is excellent, the staff is very friendly and accommodating. If you are a fan of Latin/Spanish flavors this place cannot be missed. The sangria is the best in town! Go on a Thursday night, there's a live band that plays Brazilian music and the atmosphere is amazing. If you prefer a more quiet meal they have a decent sized outdoor patio as well. All in all, I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!

This place is great. It might appear to be a bit more upscale based on the prices on the menu, but in reality it is a great value. The dishes are huge! More importantly, the quality of the food compares very favorably to most similarly priced restaurants downtown. The dishes are carefully seasoned and service is very attentive. It is a real gem for the Washington Heights/ Inwood areas.

I have to tell you im one of those people that never make it that far uptown. I live in Harlem if you havent heard all that one needs is happening in Harlem right now... BUT WAIT!!!! I was invited to Mamajuana and my first thought was im not going to Dykman to eat. Not Happening. What a miss that would have been. Ill make it short because all you really care about is the food, the service, and the experience. Well I had the special of the evening (A rissoto and lobster dish) OMG delicious!!!! And for service-- FABULOUS. The place is beautifully decorated. Im definitely going back!

I started my 22nd birthday celebration with dinner at this restaurant - and IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I don't know many places that are able to accommodate 24 people while also providing superb service. For starters the decor is unmatched in this developing neighborhood. After getting of the train, I wasn?t sure where to walk, but then I saw the medieval-style doors ? which instantly set Mamajuanas apart from everything else on the street. They really spared no expense when it came to creating a luxury dining experience (trust me - even walk into the bathroom and you will see). In regards to food and drink - my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Our sangria glasses never went dry - I think we had about 15 pitchers (oops!). It was toooo good. My favorite at the restaurant is the paella. I'm usually weary of ordering seafood at restaurants because usually you get cheated; you know, an order of shrimp scampi includes like 5 pieces of shrimp, so you?re left picking from the plates of your dinner mates. I was pleasantly surprised at Mamajuanas when my paella was SO plentiful that clams, mussels, lobster, and shrimp were falling off the plate. In fact, I ended up sharing with a friend and still felt full! Well - not full enough to not pick from the pernil, chicken, and lobster risotto others had ordered. I think it's best to enjoy Mamajuanas family style because everything is so savory and delicious you should try everything! It's hard - but try to save room for dessert because the flan is worth it!! \r\n\r\nI was so happy with my experience at Mamajuana that I have since returned. I recently had dinner with some friends outside on the comfy white sofa under the beautiful umbrellas. Forget Washington Heights - I thought I was in Miami!\r\n

I gathered a few co-workers and we all went to the great place. The food, drinks and desserts were great. The portions were plentiful. We ate on the huge side walk. I loved the fact that the sidewalk seating area was very far away from the street. Unlike other side walk eating area's we did not have to smell the exhaust from the cars parking in the street. I never liked eating outside until I came to this place, I was always afraid that someone passing by would sneezing in my food. But, Not here there's enough space for people to EAT, walk and park. Thank goodness because I was able to enjoy the tasty food. The staff was friendly. Bring your appetite.

I had a similar first reaction to Mamajuana as did Jayrnyc (1st review). I really liked the style and I still do. I have been to their brunch which I thought was generous in terms of food. I think the place is beautiful and I really like the sidewalk cafe scene. But the prices are manhattan-high and I wish the whole experience could match the prices. The brunch food was tasty but at 3:00 in the afternoon it wasn?t really hot (this was during colder weather). During a visit in early June, on a very busy Sunday, my friend and I were seated next to a bathroom. The table just really sucked and they should just recognize that no customer is going to be happy there. On top of the bad location, a big puddle began to form right outside the bathroom entrance. It wasn?t clear where the water was coming from, but the staff pulled up a bucket and just had to stand there mopping it. It was only after my friend declared it was impossible to eat in that spot that the hostess finally broke down and moved us to an outdoor table, two minutes after telling me earnestly that it would be minimally a one hour wait for an outside table. And while we were sitting and enjoying the late Sunday afternoon outdoor scene, eating delicious gourmet empanadas, we also observed three other tables outside that were empty. New restaurants have to be good to their customers if they want to build loyal followings. And there are so many reviewing options these days.

Pros: excellent wait staff, all staff were polite,

Cons: staff should focus on accomodating customers

This restaurant came out of no where! They are way ahead of their time for this developing area. First off, the decor and attention to detail of the space is unbelievable. So beautiful and inviting. Not stuffy at all. You can also eat and drink like a king but get a bill fit for a pauper. I normally would not go all the way uptown just for a restaurant but the drinks and atmosphere make the trip well worth it. Many of my friends had recommended the place which is why I went there with my husband for a nice romantic evening and then recently brought a whole bunch of co-workers to lounge and eat on their outside seating. So much fun, and good food without the attitude. BTW, the wine list is unbelievable. They really know their wine and food and cocktails! I would definitely recommend reservations so that you don't have to wait.
