Recently named one of the 150 best hotels in the Western Hemisphere by National Geographic Traveler, the Blue Moon Hotel is a five-year artistic design project that uniquely captures the cultural heritage of New York's fabled Lower East Side. Filled with hundreds of artifacts and documents discovered in the original 1879 tenement building, the Blue Moon offers your clients luxuriously appointed, spacious rooms rarely found in New York hotels. The hotel's upper three floors feature large terraces with spectacular panoramas of the city. Our staff has been repeatedly cited as providing an unequaled level of personal service. TripAdvisor, which currently rates over 400 hotels in the city, places the Blue Moon in the top five percent, based on guest reviews.

The Scene
The unique boutique hotel showcases a hodgepodge of remnants from the old tenement space mixed with crushed velvet couches, crimson pillows and countless plants. Wood paneling from the original stairwell covers the wall, a soap stone sink from the old basement now holds flowers, and mosaic tiles from the original vestibule dot the floor. To further the theme, tunes from the 1930s and 40s play as guests browse collection of keepsakes or, in a more modern turn, browse the internet at the lobby's computer station.

The Details
Celebrity memorabilia and 1920's-style furniture fill 22 spacious rooms, each named for a different "old New York" entertainer. The hotel features six room types that range in price based on amenities such as size, terraces, closets, and views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Sunken bathtubs, empty mini-fridges, bar sinks, flat screen TVs, DVD players and free wireless access are standard in every room.

Key Points

  • New York's Hidden Jewel Hotel
  • All Rooms Over 320 Sq Feet
  • 22 Spacious Rooms

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - A complimentary kosher breakfast--stocked with goodies from Lower East Side mainstays--is served in the lobby from 7:15am to 10am.
  2. Parking - Discounted parking is available for guests at nearby Allen Street.
  3. Fun Fact - The collages and prints that line the hallway were crafted by the hotel's owner from scraps found in the original tenement.
  4. The Extras - The front desk maintains a library of classic movies on DVD that guests may rent free of charge.

Best Hotel in NYC!

by DrMikeT

There is a Synoguge in the basement, a refrigarator & micro-wave in every room. The frige is stocked everyday with beverages of anything you desire. The balconey of your room has a spectacular veiw of the City. Every morning you wake up to a wonderful breakfast. When I stayed there in the winter of 2006 & 2007, the staff, and owner made me feel like a King. You have to see it to believe it. The rooms are big and comfortable. I'm going there today, even though I have my own place in the West Village.

Pros: Lovely spacious rooms with indivigual balconeys

Cons: N/A

I was very impressed with this B&B. You can't find too many places like this in NYC anymore. I'm not a fan of big hotel chains. This was a great find!

Pros: Prices

Cons: None

Terrific Hotel

by mereditheats

I wanted to plan a mini get away for myself and my boyfriend three weeks ago in New York. I wanted to stay in a unique hotel and not a giant glass tower. Blue Moon Hotel was absolutely perfect! From our adorable and spacious rooms to the amazing staff, everything was perfect. The hotel is also located right in the heart of the lower east side so there was tons of restaurants, bars, and shopping right outside our front door. Absolutely charming!!

Pros: Quaint, great location, perfect stay!

More colorful than ten Monets

by quisporquake

Atmosphere and local color to burn at this renovated/expanded tenement in a very historical area -- next door is the fascinating Tenement Museum, and 100 years ago the surrounding blocks made up the most densely populated place on earth! We stayed in the magnificent Eddie Cantor room, 8th floor (three floors were added when the hotel was created), 700 mammoth square feet, terrific balcony view from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Chrysler Building! Lovely old woodwork salvaged from the old building, sparkling retro bath, beautiful couch and queen bed. TV tiny and far from the bed, but you don't go to a place like this to watch the tube. You leave your key at the front desk, which is manned/womaned 24 hrs. The elevator is slower than molasses, but always seems to be available, as there's only 23 rooms. Lovely continental breakfast. Crazy-good artsy decor, hand-painted walls, huge volumes of Goya in the lobby (!), hall walls decorated with clips from old NYC newspapers -- including an article by Mussolini! Decent restaurants are about a five minute walk, the F line is right around the corner on Essex. Nice talks with the proprietor, a loquacious NYC native with a penchant for fedoras. Go!

Pros: Colorful, friendly, 24 hour front desk

Cons: Slow elevator, door jiggled
