I had a great dinner with 3 friends at The Diner this week. It was my first time there and we were seated quickly and the service was fast and friendly.
We started with fish tacos and hummus with veggies and pita. Both were yummy and fresh.
For dinner I had a salad with goat cheese, beets and chicken. I also sampled my friend's meals which were a burger, cobb salad and fish with grilled corn on the cob.
Its easy to eat healthy here or chose a loaded burger with fries or onion rings. I am sure kids would love this place too.
The desserts were my favorite. I had banana bread pudding with chocolate chips, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. I loved it! My friends had the peanut butter sundae and brownie sundae.
I can't wait to go back. I hope the weather will be warmer so I can sit outside and people watch.

Cons: I didn't find any cons...

We went to Diner two times this week because it was convenient, and the first night was great! The second time we went which was last night we got a horrible waitress. She took our order in a rush, put it in... we got soups to start...20 minutes later, my soup and both our meals came out at the same time. HELLO!!!!!!!! appetizer means before meal. They didnt even bring her soup at all..and the waitress claimed they were all out...and she forgot to tell us. well thats pretty dumb of you... your only job is to serve us, and service us. you didnt even come over to tell us you were out? nice job...even better? the people next to us got the soup that you were out of 10 minutes later. you didnt come back one time to check on us until we were done. pathetic service... too busy flirting with fellow staff members.
anyhow..the food is actually really good... they should really reevaluate who they hire.

I've been a regular at this place for quite some time. Not because of the food, which is average, but because of its convenient location etc. I usually bring many friends along after a night out in town, so needless to say I was shocked to have been treated like a criminal when I tried to go in last night. It was around 1:30 am. We were going to be seated by the hostess, when out of nowhere, this big "Sopranos" wannabe guy, stopped us and said that my gf was not allowed in. He said that she looked drunk. The funny thing is that I was the one doing the drinking n' not her. I couldn't believe it. Specially when that place serves the club goers after they are done for the night. Anyway, I tried to reason with the man (if u can call him that) but it was pointless. When I asked for the manager, he said that he would be happy to call the cops instead. What!!?? He then called us stupid puertorricans and laughed at us. I've never been treated like this in my life, and for what? for a pathetic sandwich with fries? U have got to be kidding me!

Pros: Many places around to eat instead.

Cons: "Bouncer"

i had a veggie burger here once that I really liked. I have since ordered it in three times and been back to the Diner once. All of the deliveries took close to 1 hour to get here, I am around the corner; and the food arrived cold. Really, like it was outside for the entire hour it took to arrive. When we actually went to the Diner the service was again so slow and disorganized. How do they stay open? Great location but come on.

Our server was beyond rude from the moment we sat down and the food was awful. Eating here was a mistake I will never make again.

We were sober when we went here for dinner at 10 pm on a Saturday night. Maybe if we had been trashed we would have enjoyed it more. We were promptly seated because there really was not that many people there. There was a DJ playing music. He was playing his music so loudly that we could literally could not hear the waitress. She had to bend over and talk directly in our ears and we had to do the same for her. We could not hear each other at the table and had to scream to talk. It was miserable. The hostess passed by. I asked him if he could kindly ask the DJ to turn down the music because it was unbearable and we could not hear each other. We had come to talk and eat. Not dance at a club. The music was seriously that loud. The hostess never returned and the music never got better. I then went to the manager and asked him kindly if he could have his DJ turn down his music. The manager was beyond RUDE and said no. He told me that people come specifically to eat there for the DJ. Looking around there still were only a handful of tables. There were tons of empty tables. It did not look as though so many people were there for the DJ. We ate as fast as we could to get out of there. By the way the music was obnoxious. It was gospel music at first with a twist, we felt like we were in church. Then it became music from the 80s that was never really even popular in the 80s. Bring your ear plugs if you go to this hell hole in the meatpacking.

I been in so many restaurants and always is the same type of people trying to get free food, complainers because the time?... did anybody knows this is a place where they always busy?, 40 minutes is the average time that everyone will wait to have a nice lunch in a very crowd place.

All this people treat the servers, like they are their slaves and you expect to get something from it?... please get a life!, we all know what kind of people are you!

The Diner have so many LOYAL customers and mostly of us love that place!

Do not bother. The service is so blatently selective and horrible. Waiters pay attention to table with parties of 3 or more while Single Serving was left waiting 15 minutes before the waiter came to me, another 10 minutes to receive my Ice Tea which came warm with a lemon with brown lemon rind, thrown in the glass. Not one bit of ice was in it. Okay now we are at the 25 minute mark.

Having ordered the Salmon Salad from the Specials menu, you would think this would be easy enough.
But know another 20 minutes and still no salad. I asked for the manager, who arrived and did nothing. Just looked at me and walked away when I explained I had now been waiting for 45 minutes and had not received my salad, while the table next to me and all around had.

On the way out, I asked the front desk area for the owners name and one person almost gave it to me unti the manager came up (real nasty) and blocked the conversation. He asked the bartender how long and she told him 40 minutes and he just smirked and said well I am not going to do nothing.

Don't bother, wish I could tell you about the food but I never received any.

Acoustics are terrible!! The service was deplorable, the carelessness of both the hosting staff and of the overworked wait staff left much to be desired. It is ridiculously overpriced, and the food is neither well made or flavorful. The menu is boring and trite. Do not waste your time or your money... Wendy's is a little farther east down 14th street might be a better investment of time and money!

My fiance and I were out on a Saturday night with all intentions on going to check out APT. It was so not meant to be especially after finding a parking spot DIRECTLY across the street from APT!! Too good to be true.. and it was. Anyways, luckily the night was beautiful (fall at its best) and the people were out and about.. so not too bummed, we decided to walk around to find a place to get a drink and people-watch. We had no intentions on going to a "diner" but my fiance had to go really bad and thought that would be the easiest place. As soon as we walked in.. we were like.. ummm... we could stay here! The music was great and pumpin with 80s classics.. there was a bar... BINGO. We decided not to eat anything but the drink that I got was really good... It was a peach camprioso or something to the like. Very good.. We enjoyed our drinks, the music, and we will definitely return when in the Meatpacking area.

**EDITED 7/28/09**

We went back during happy hour... try the $1 tacos. They are fabulously tasty. I'm mad that I only stayed long enough to have one! Oh and the server was super friendly.

This place is awful. The food is nasty and overpriced. Cheap quality. It's not that difficult to put out good food to keep people coming back. Customers see right through the corner cutting and feel ripped off. I've heard they had other restaurants that are same just as bad. Don't bother

The diner is awesome, not only do they have the best steak sandwhich in nyc, but the sliders, drinks, fries, and french toast are all amazing options. The service is warm and casual and the ambiance is great. I love coming here at all hours, especially after going out.

People that write bad reviews of the diner have absolutely NO idea what's going on, simply because they're expecting something other than The Diner. Just because its in meatpacking doesn't mean its some overpriced place with gourmet food- its A DINER, people!!! (You don't go to a diner to nit-pick the salt content of your french fries...am I right?? Come on now!!) Here's the real deal: The Diner rocks. It has diner-esk food, like sandwiches, chicken, salad, eggs, burgers, etc. Its all really good, but its NOT amazing (unless you get the steak sandwich- that IS AMAZING!!). You have to understand, The Diner is a pop-culture landmark; you go there for what it IS, not for 5 star gourmet meals like at Josephs or Le Cirque. The Diner is awesome!! Where else can you go that has a fun atmosphere, DJ equipment RIGHT when you walk in (its so random), good diner food and an interesting scene!?? NO WHERE!! Its the perfect place to top the night off- I love it there!!

where to start??? the food, waiter, bartender, the person who seemed like an owner/ manager? this is an establishment that has no idea what is going on. oh and and the 18 year old gorgeous hostess? acts her age. doesnt know when my table will be up when the place was nowhere near full and then asked us to move because she sat us in the wrong section. because during the 20 minutes we had to wait while the bartender who didnt realise that we were sitting there due to phone use and bitching with co-workers, she couldnt figure that out. and the food? someone give that chef a cookbook. basic dine food shouldnt be that hard. mac n cheese that is semi warm and over salted? dry fried chicken? lumpy gravy?

How nice to finally have a place in the "trendy" meatpacking district, that won't cost you your mortgage or rent to go to. Have been for lunch and dinner and loved it each time - different feel at night but still fun with nice food and friendly servers without attitudes - had to double check and make sure we were in the Meatpacking District for a second. Food was basic but tasty and nicely prepared and more importantly nicely priced. Yea! We found a new place to go to for lunch and dinner

Let me just start by saying the food is tasty not bad but I'm absolutely appalled by the cost. This place is way overpriced for the value or quality of food as it is all basic diner food. A friend and I went for lunch today and ordered, I a grilled cheese she an omelet. The grilled cheese was priced at $10.95 I foolishly assumed for that price it would be on brioche or challa bread and at least consist of an exotic cheese like cheddar(yes that is facetious). The waitress asked if I wanted fries or tomato soup with that. I said that the menu only states that it comes with tomato soup. She said no either/or. I ordered both and said that my friend and I were splittng the fries. When the order came out I was shocked to see the sandwich was on white bread and the "exotic" cheese was 2 Kraft singles. Whatever, I suffered in silence. When the bill arrived I was shocked again to see they had tacked on 2 dollars to the price of the sandwich, the fries were a separate item on the bill. When I questioned the waitress she said it was because I order the soup. I showed her the menu that stated the inclusion of the soup and told her that she had even said the soup or fries was included with the sandwich and that I was already charged separately for the fries. She said had to get her manager because she couldn't change it in the computer herself. It was fixed thankfully but the whole thing is a bit suspicious to me. I live in the neighborhood and had heard from neighbors and acquaintainces about mysteriously added items to the bill at this place. I would not have believed it if it had not happened to me. Go at your own risk but I suggest you avoid it.

Well Im glad we gave it another shot. Stopped in right after it opened and was disappointed - the atmosphere was great but the food and service was a major disappointment. Decided to give it another shot. Wow = things have improved!!! The place is still very cute and hip with a great atmosphere but the menu and food is much better now. The service was great - we were waited on by Ana (i think) and she was a delight - right there for us with everything we wanted - it was busy but she on top of our table all lunch. We will definetely be back soon

Three of us walked in at 3 PM on Friday (3/24/06) to a nearly empty restaurant. After asking the waiter for a few minutes to look over the menu, we had to call out several times over 15 minutes to get him to come back to our table. After some confusion about no substitutions (we wanted a slice of cheese on an omelette instead of a side of bacon - how hard is that?), we waited 40 minutes for an omelette, a burger, and a caesar salad! After 20 minutes and a lot of angry glares, the waiter finally found out that they were out of fries. When we finally got our orders, there were so little fries on our plates, it was laughable and the burger was cold. Never again! This placed sucked!

Whether you want a high-cholesterol salt festival or a healthy, clean dinner, this place has anything you want in a diner. The prices are a little Meatpacking District, but you can't really complain. It's upscale comfort food, as they say. The macaroni and cheese is the best I've ever had. Add the chorizo if you dare!!! After a workout, the chicken sandwich is really satisfying when you're trying to resist fries.

I had the veggie burger and my friend had the triple layered grilled cheese. both were really great, the french fries are awesome, drinks aren't overpriced and the scenery is cute, like an old diner you'd see in a small town. i had a great time and our waiter (apparently he is the manager, but was covering for someone?) was absolutely terrific! the only issue i had was that the hostess was incredibly rude. We simply asked to be seated away from the door (there were 4 tables out of about... well maybe 20 full) and she rolled her eyes at us and said "fine, whatever", stormed to the table and slammed our menus down and left! luckily the the waiter was really great so that made up for it. i am a little hesitant to go back on a date or something.

I have never seen a manager speak so rudely and condescendingly to both his employees and myself, as the customer. It ruined my whole dining experience. The food was average.

Went to THE DINER after work with friends. What fun we had! We tried the meat loaf, mac and cheese, steak sandwich, spaghetti and meatballs....all comfort food. One of us even had a milk shake. Staff was very anxious to please. The decor is so RETRO..
We will all go back again.

A Diner it is not...Just what the neighborhood didn't need. Another restaurant where everything is a production. As a resident in the neighborhood it was sad to see Nicks go, only to be replaced with a meatpacking version of a diner. So out of place...just open a johnny rockets..at least you'd get an ok burger.

.

Service was great...waiter was on top of it!

Now the food...well that was disappointing at best - bad is another way to put it. I had a Chicken Caesar Wrap and there was almost no chicken. Basically a wrap filled with lettuce. Mom had a grilled cheese...it was plain American cheese, no butter on the bread, and a couple slices of tomato. Nothing special. The fries were EXACTLY like the fries at Burger King! The one positive was the onion rings - They were good. Sodas were small and refills were not free - we paid $3.00 each for two diet cokes.

Two seperate parites came in to sit next to us and left after looking at the menu. Not a big selection and sorta pricy.

The bad food is not worth the good service and cute decor. Hope these waiters find themselves another job before this place closes.

I've been to The Diner a few times...I live in the area. I had a great hamburger there and the food is good in general. BUT...they charge $3.50 for an iced coffee and there are no free refills so we ended up paying $7 for iced coffee. Oh...but there were free refills on the iced tea. Ridiculous!

I went here the week it opened. It was very cute, with a 40s diner feel. The service was on point. Had the mac n cheese with chorizo as an appetizer, enough for two. Nice mixture of cheese, not too overwhelming, very good. My friend and I both had burgers. I am very picky about burgers and these were great. It is a great inexpensive spot right in the heart of the overpriced Meatpacking area. Plan on going there whenever we are in the area.

I thought my girlfriend and I got to Aer on time this past weekend, but the lines were so long we walked off. Trying to get a table at Spice Market was equally futile, and we were about to go back home, but we stumbled upon the Diner. What a refreshing spot! Very down to earth, and very friendly service. The burgers were great, but the mac and cheese will have us coming back often. Even with desserts we managed to eat very well and not do a lot of wallet damage.

Is there anything better than comfort food and a classic diner? A place where fried chicken means deep-fried---not once but twice---and it's served with chive-whipped potatoes. Where macaroni and cheese ooze over pieces of spicy chorizo…
