I've given this place a few tries, but it's consistently bad even for my simple tastes. I've had rubbery, undercooked chicken and fresh-from-the-can pasta sauce in the past. Last night I felt sorry for the (friendly and professional) bartender, all alone on a Friday night, and decided that they couldn't screw up sausage and peppers...which arrived so overcooked that they were both completely dessicated. Fries were cold and soggy.

I imagine the place is hurting for money given how empty it always is, but there's no excuse for food so poor. There are places in the neighborhood whose "kitchens" consist of a microwave and a fryer, and they do better than River.

Other problems: no A/C on a hot summer night (apparently they aren't allowed to run it if the place isn't full; people kept coming in and turning right around), flat drafts. There's really not much I can recommend other than the bartenders, who are always responsive and gregarious.

Pros: Nice staff, nice decor

Cons: Terrible food, frequently flat beer, hot during the summer

I've gone to this bar countless times and have blacked out. They don't cut anyone off. Recently someone (ironically NOT me) got locked in from passing out and the staff didn't know. I found out about it from my doorman (I live in the building). They serve those who already are drunk (I speak from several experiences). Beware if you leave your card there because they will run whatever tip they want if you're not careful.

Pros: You don't get cut off, Few get tossed out, Great selection

Cons: Few buy backs, Weird tipping policy
