Most of the reviews of Cafe 71 here are horror stories, and now I can add another....

My simple takeout order was thoroughly botched and I was overcharged to boot.

I phoned the day manager, who goes by Rocky. He promised to make things right if I brought back the item and the receipt. Yet when we met, he failed to apologize for the mix-up, denied that the overcharge occurred (in effect calling me a liar), and refused to grant a full refund. His manner was rude, obnoxious, egregious, and inexcusable.

It just doesnt get much worse than this!

At other establishments, such as Trader Joes and Duane Reade (both on the same block), managers are trained to accept the customers complaint and instantly make a full refundno questions, no quibbling, no arguments, no accusations. Yet ironically, were constantly told that the big impersonal chains are morally inferior to the virtuous small neighborhood merchants they sometimes replace. Really?

Ive lived and worked in this neighborhood for 32 years. Of course, I will never return to Caf 71 and I encourage others to avoid it as well. I hope it will soon close forever and be replaced by well, maybe one of those evil chains where the staffers treat customers with civility.

The service can be a problem but the food is exceptional. The 4-5 times I've gotten salads were great and every ingredient was fresh.

A friend and I headed to Cafe 71 while we were in the neighborhood. We opted for pizza. It smelled like burnt rubber and gasoline. After a bite or two, we were feeling ill. My friend is insane, so she kept eating hers, complaining the whole time. I said "If it's not good, you should take it back." So I did. I said, "I'm sorry, but I think there's something wrong with this pizza...it just has an 'off' smell." The guy behind the counter said, "You know how many people eat this pizza every day? No one EVER complains." I was like "I'm sorry, and I never complain at restaurants, but if something is going to make me sick I don't want to eat it." He bitched at me for a few minutes before handing me another slice -- from the same pie. After more grumbling on his part, I tried the second slice...no surprise, it smelled/tasted the same. He said "I'll get another slice." I said "If you're going to keep giving me slices from the same pie, we're not going to solve anything...I'd really just like my money back, or something else entirely."

He then yelled across the store to who I am assuming was the manager. Used a few obscenities, called me a b****, all in front of several other customers. It was embarrassing, and I obviously wasn't trying to cause a scene by returning my food. I just don't think it's fair to charge someone for something that is awful. I've held plenty of customer service jobs in my early New York days, so I know how annoying it is to listen to complaints...but it's your job. Especially if a complaint is valid, and could be identifying a possible health risk.

Eventually, after about 15 minutes of back and forth bickering between myself, the manager, and the pizza guy, I was given my refund and then called a b****, yet again. I was not respected by these people in the least, and treated horribly. I've never once complained about food at a deli or cafe before, and now that I know how customers are treated, I never will again. You can also guarantee that I will NEVER set foot in Cafe 71 again; and have told all of my friends and family in the area to do the same.

Pros: Location

Cons: Everything else

.

Overpriced menu, terrible delivery service and you have to double check your bill or you could easily be ripped off. Some of the dishes are good, like the breakfast plates, but otherwise not worth much of anything else. They are even cheap with the sugar ~ once ordered like 4 coffees and got only 4 packets of sugar. Even if you can easily afford their prices, due to it's location (71st and Broadway), don't bother.
