"THE AMERICAN" on MOTT ST. is CLOSED! Its now a place called LULU's! Not much of a loss here! The Burger lunch was $14.00 plus tip for a plate no different than a standard diner. It had a unfinished 50's Americana style to it that was off to a good start. BUT the whole thing was odd considering it was run by Italian speaking foreigners. The big problem was the crapped Booths and the "i'm too good for you." service. Not sad to see it go.

Cons: ITS CLOSED!

What a great find! Really a hidden gem in Soho. Great great food at decent prices (the burgers are incredible!!!) Cool staff from all over Europe. Kind of like your neighborhood diner but not a diner - it's much warmer and the food so much better.
I highly recommend it if you are looking to please a large crowd or are with children but don't want to sacrifice quality and taste for some peace and quiet.
It's a cool place to hang out and have a beer too - never done it, but every time I go in there seems to be a few people at the bar chatting away.

friend suggested we try this new place in our hood, what a mistake. the food arrived cold and we got our food after people who arrived after us got there food before us. the waitress who seemed to be from another planet tried to make up for the bad food and slowwww service offered us chocolate cheesecake for breakfast. What? who eats cheesecake for breakfast?I here this place is owned by the same people who own Bread I think they should stick to italian food not american and especially not american breakfast.
There are so many other good spots in the hood try some where else.

This restaurant's appealing retro-diner setting is about all it has going for it. The food can charitably be described as second-rate, and the service was appalling: both lackadaisical and very slow. I would not consider eating here again.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Everything else

These idiots not only sent me extra food that I didn't order and charged me for it, they charged me another $15 for god knows what. And the food wasn't even good. DON'T EAT THERE AND IF YOU DO, DON'T USE YOUR CREDIT CARD!!!

We were hungry and tired after a day of touring and heading into Little Italy for "something". Happily we passed by The American and were immediately drawn in by the fun decor and tasty sounding menu. No offense to the previous reviewer, but I'm not sure we ate in the same restaurant. Our waitress was great. Very responsive, conversational without being too friendly and handled all the customers in the restaurant with ease in spite of being the only waitress on duty.
Our food was basic, but very good and well priced. We had the cheddar cheese burger which was cooked perfectly with a bit of onion mixed in with the meat; the caesar salad and gazpacho were very tasty and the portions were quite generous. My 9 year old daughter also had the caesar salad and almost cleaned her bowl which is really saying something.........
They had a good offering of sodas and beverages (no bar items for us, but they appeared to have a good selection) I was pleased to find Boylan soda on the menu.
The restaurant itself was clean, well maintained and even the open kitchen appeared to be clean. There is limited seating in the front, but don't be fooled, there is plenty of room towards the back of the building. We would surely put The American on our list of "eat here again" places for our next visit to the city.

Aside from it having a decent decor. What else would you expect from the people who brought you overrated "Bread"
What a joke this food is.Incredibly overpriced and terrible portions. This is for Moronic Nolita Hipsters who just want to hang with their freinds and spend money they did not earn.
This place actually manages to screw up Breakfast. It is cold and tasteless. The waitstaff is terrible as well. The owner basically hires pretty clueless model wannabes who take their time in the most menial task.
