I have been coming to the House for quite some time now. I tell all my friends if they want an enjoyable experience to come to The House. Not only is the decor lovely but the food is great too. The wild boar lasanga is one of my favorite

Management, specifically Alexander is the WORST. Two weeks ago I went to House with some friends for a birthday celebration, had good food and a nice atmosphere.... really no complaints even after our $400.00 bill for 5 of us..... no problem. What I do have a problem with is that i left a shopping bag there filled with stuff (it is Christmas season) and inside the bag was a gift too, left it there. I called that night, Alexander said "we found the bag, don't worry we will put it downstairs for you". I was so happy, that was on Thursday, Monday I go to pick up the bag and no one knows where it is. Alexander was not in, I asked the girls working to call him since I made a special trip down there, they would not. Okay, no prob, I will call tomorrow. I called the next day and spoke to Alexander and he was the RUDEST person I have ever spoken to (not rude the night spending $400), he told me it was a "courtesy that we even held the bag, it is not my responsibility and i don't' know where it is". I was flabbergasted, is it not your responsibility if you take it in your possession, tell me you have it and not to worry about it? THAN he told me "you had 24 hours to pick it up".. WHAT THE WHAT, he never told me that! So, he basically told me someone stole my bag, even though it was downstairs where customers cannot go. If he would have said, "listen, I am so sorry and what can I do"... I would have said, don't' worry about it, I don't want anything (except my gifts since I just came from Christmas shopping). BUT he was SOOOO rude and had an attitude right off the bat, VERY defensive... hummm wonder why. Seriously, he was not rude when we spend $400... but asking him for something he said he has in his possession and to say "don't worry about it, i will put it downstairs" than treating me like a jerk by telling me it was a courtesy that he held my bag at all and that I had 24 hours to pick up"... I just wish he would have told me this on the phone, I would have gone straight back.

Strange thing, I was on a plane this weekend, meet a lady who lives near there and said that she had problem with management too, but she did not know the guys name. This place is good, the owners need to know that they lost about 5 customers due to the RUDENESS of Alexander.

Fine dining at its best. My wonderful friends took me there for dinner for my birthday last year and I have been too lazy to write a review. The service was excellent. From the appetizers to the desserts, every bite was just exceptional. No other dining experience has compared since. I am looking forward to a return visit.

Went this past Friday for dinner for my boyfriend's birthday as we had a memorable meal the last time we were there and had been looking forward to going back . Well the second time around was even better - the service was impeccable, food was delicious and the wine selection was awesome. Our waiter was also quite knowledgable about the wine and food pairings which led to a divine dining experience. We had a reservation for 9 but decided to go a little early and have a couple of cocktails at the bar. The place was very busy since it was Friday night, so when they told us that our table would be another 5 or 10 minutes after 9pm we understood - when they did seat us we were immediately brought a plate of appetizers as an apology for making us wait. The manager came by the table after we finished our entrees to see how everything wasand again apologize for our (brief) wait. I don't know about other reviews but as someone who used to be a restaurant manager, I found the service of the waiter, the hostess, the bartender and the manager all to be spot on & they were truly welcoming, gracious and knowledgable -like I went to eat at a good friend's House.

Cons: The menu itself, although gorgeous, is hard to read in candlelight - silver background with small typeset.

I live in the neighborhood, and found the location and the carriage house history "charming", so I decided to give The House a try. Tonight, at 6:45pm on a Tuesday night, my girl friend and I dropped by The House for early drinks after seeing that Olives was packed. The House was dead, with only a few people at the bar, and all of the tables downstairs completely empty. Like the other reviews, the hostess, instead of welcoming us when we walked in, asked if we had "reservations" with a big attitude, and when we said we didn't and that we just wanted drinks, she told us that the tables were for dinner only and that she would have to seat us at the bar upstairs, where there were nobody except for a bartender. When I asked if we can be seated downstairs as all of the tables were empty and as the second floor was stuffy (the AC upstairs doesn't seem to work well), she insisted with the same big attitude that it was "cool" upstairs and that we can either sit up on the second floor bar or sit outside. I found her attitude unacceptable at such an empty bar on an early Tuesday evening that we decided to walk out. We ended up at Cibar just down the block, where we were warmly welcomed and had our choice of table with great music and a nice crowd. I will never go back to The House nor recommend this place to anyone. If I can give less than one star, I would. Shame on you, The House.

Looks amazing outside and it's very cozy spot and the food is actually tasty. Unfortunately, the service is awful and we saw a live rodent run under our table. When we told the waiter, he just nobbed and acknowledged that they have a severe rodent infestation...no apologies or concern. My wife and her friends were horrified and we skipped desert and go the check. Other from the pest problems, we had to asked several times before we got our drinks and they overcharged us for the drinks and food by adding 2 extra drinks and dish to the check. Didn't catch it till the next day. We definitely will NOT return.

Aside from decor, the House has got it all wrong. I went for dinner a few nights ago and became progressively more disgusted as time passed. Our waiter's name was either Xavier or Javier and he was rude and simply lacking personality. Let me just say that I mostly blame the management and ownership for employing such individuals, but from there it was the Xavier/Javier show. Since I worked as a waiter (and hated it, so I deeply respect those who do) throughout my college years I tend to be far more tolerant and indifferent toward restaurant mishaps, but this was an exception. Dinner and a good amount of wine an our party just over $1K but almost everything during our stay had some problem or mistake attached to it and the place wasnt even half full. Our server didnt get us our first bottle of wine for almost 15 minutes. Thinking it may be difficult to find we were understanding until my friend noticed that he simply pulled it off of a shelf about 5 feet from where he was standing. Was he playing some kind of waiting game?! He hounded us about buying bottled water for the table more than anything. Both courses took forever to come, but luckily they served a healthy basket of excuses and stories with each. I'd recommend the house for a quick glass of wine outside on a nice day but not much else.

My girlfriend and I walked by this place on a Sunday afternoon. We checked out the menu, which sounded great (though a little pricey) and decided to come back to try it. Big mistake. Looks can be deceiving. Upon entering, we were immediately asked if we had a reservation (love that). I looked around, seeing that the place was empty and asked if they could still seat us. After we were sized up, we were taken to a cramped table in a bad location (love that too). Our waiter was remarkably rude and not only didn't know the menu and screwed up the order (when a customer says "gluten allergy", you listen), but was also condescending (oh, no bottled water, ok). The hits just kept on coming after that. When our apps came out and we thought they were small, you'd think our expectations would be set for the entrees. Nope. We've eaten at a ton of restaurants in the city and this place takes the cake for portion size. I think they must think the place is hip enough to attract anorectic models who don't like to eat anyway. Sorry, losers. In any case, the food was so saturated in oil and fat I guess we're lucky there wasn't much of it. They should serve it with a side of coronary stents. Anyway, our favorite part about the whole experience (other than leaving), was when out of nowhere, amateur hour starts up ending our ability to converse and digest our food. We skipped dessert and got the H out of there.

This place is a huge disaster. Do yourself a favour and steer clear.

(BTW - I'm betting that a number of these reviews are written by the staff or owner. See if this review is followed by several positive ones in quick succession.)

My friend I happened to be passing by and heard amazing live music coming from this quaint location located right next to a beautiful flower shop, and we just had to walk in! It was so inviting...great staff...great wine list, and I especially loved that the staff was knowledgable of the wine list! Our server's name was Javier. Very intimate and courteous service. We were both very happy and left feeling like we were well treated. Food was exceptional...The music was by a band called "The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn". Song after song was great! I even ended up buying a cd. A great recommendation...for a place to get together with friends. I went Sunday night and will probably go again next Sunday. Thank you for a great treat!

Great atmosphere. This place is really enjoyable in all aspects, the quality of food and the service is excellent. The staff were really kind as I spilt my glass of wine and they offered me a new one free of charge. I brought my girlfriend, and she really enjoyed it. So guys if you are looking for a great place to hang out with your girl on a saturday night, the house is IT.

Unbelievably rude. Two staff in particular showed an tremendous lack of courtesy (Javier and Jonathan. Was it because they don't like asian or white people?) 9:00 pm on a Tue night, 5 of us wanted to sit at a table for deserts and drinks. Three open tables downstairs, and the response was: "No. Dinner only.... sit at the bar" In and of itself, that was not horrible, and the bartender was excellent. However, 45 minutes later, we are still watching the three empty tables, eating a round of dessert, while another friend joins us. When we asked if they could pull up an EMPTY chair from an EMPTY table to sit with us at the bar, we were told: "No, she has to sit alone at the other end of the bar....." WHAT THE @#$?!?! "Can we sit at a table, since we are eating desserts."

"No." Excuse me? Our only option is to sit separately at a long bar?

YOU HAD THREE EMPTY TABLES ON A TUESDAY NIGHT AND PEOPLE WANTED TO EAT AND DRINK MORE.. JAVIER AND JONATHAN, HOW FOOLISH ARE YOU?

We walked out.
If they are as selective in whom they hire in the kitchen as whom they hire at the door, I would not be surprised to see people getting sick after eating here. If they have forgotten courtesy in a service industry, how good are they at simple things, like washing their hands after using the restroom. It would be very interesting to see the dept of health come and visit this place.

Javier and Jonathan, I hope you succeed in whatever your day jobs are, because as restaurant hosts, you are very bad, and bring about negative reviews to your employers.

I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant after reading the reviews and looking at the menu online. When we arrived Saturday night, the downstairs, which is half bar/half tables was busy and loud. Happily we were taken upstairs where it is quieter (until the upstairs bar fills up). I was surprised to be seated at what I would call a pub table - very high, with bar-height seats. There seemed to be only one regular-height table for two upstairs. Until I was given a cushion, the table was too high for the chair (think of being six years old). Overall the server was gracious, and our food was good - my husband got the special steak and really liked it. My salad was very overdressed, but once I got it with the dressing on the side, it was better. Also, if you are not a fan of duck or olives - be warned, almost everything on the menu has one or the other. I don't think we'll go back - for me, if I am paying a lot for dinner (it's pricey), I don't want to be sitting in a highchair.

This is a romantic place with lovely touches but very noisy and crowded. We were seated in the most crowded spot by the bar; it was so noisy, I left with a headache. It was so crowded, one of the staff members accidentally elbowed me in the chest, without a mere "excuse me." The food was good, but overpriced; the waiter needed to get a personality. Finally, my ice came with something unidentifiable in it. Not impressed overall, I'm afraid.

I read reviews about what a great date spot this restaurant is and it made my girlfriend and I laugh as we sat eating dinner there last Friday night. This is hands-down the loudest restaurant I have eaten at in the City to date. The acoustics of the upstairs dining room made every sound echo off the walls and the unruly patrons didn't make for an inviting romantic scene. The food was deplorable, sans the decent chocolate mousse dessert, and the lamb that everyone is in praise of was so overseasoned that it may have even been flank steak. I'm not sure. I feel lucky that I didn't go here for a first date. I couldn't hear my waiter as he read the specials, I can't imagine trying to listen as a date told me the finite details about her life! The wine bar on the ground floor was pretty hopping and I may try that sometime but definitely AVOID the restaurant!

A french first date took me there and i was very happily surprised. The atmosphere is charming and romantic but not cheesy. The wine selection blew my mind away and my date knew he had impressed me alright... Our waitress was sweet but not too pushy and the food was just scrumptious. It's definitely a great place to take a girl you actually want to have a conversation with (as opposed to those atrociously loud trendy places).
I'd love to go there again, with or without the cute french date!

Went with 6 friends and the service was great. Very friendly, warm and accommodating. Food was delicious and reasonably priced and the fireplace was a plus. recommended highly.

We were walking down 14th st. one afternoon and after walking in and out of a few places we found this one. They were so nice and down to earth we felt comfortable immediately. The wine was better than most and the food was perfect. It's difficult to achieve a relaxed atmosphere in a NYC restaurant. The Restaurant is in a carriage house, I still can?t believe how different that is... It?s a little jewelry box lol...

Pros: atmosphere, wait staff, food

My girlfriend and I have been to THE HOUSE 3 times now... We first gave it a try thanks to Citysearch and we keep coming back, and sending our friends. The wine and food selection is terrific, the staff are helpful and quick, the atmosphere is just slightly upscale/trendy, and the prices are amazing!

PROS: Atmosphere, Food and Wine

This is a beautiful, cozy restaurant spread across three floors of an old carriage house. It seems ideal for intimate dining characterized by small tables and dim candle light.

The House is relatively new (6 weeks old on the night we went), so its struggling to work out many kinks. Despite its good intentions, it was a disappointing experience. The above average, creative fare and good wine selection was tarnished by poor service and long long wait times.

Overall, the staff seemed lost and totally clueless as to what was going on in their dining rooms. We overheard gripes about waiting endlessly for menus, drinks and subsequent courses to arrive. This only confirmed that it was not only us experiencing the slow service.

The managers/owners seemed almost inept in making their guests feel welcome. Lots of explaining at the end of the evening why their service was so slow, but they did nothing during the meal to manage customers expectations.

In our experience New Yorkers are very forgiving even if a restaurant is new. When hosts take the time to truly make customers feel valued (such as offering concessions/acknowledgement that long wait times can be expected), diners will always accept compromise. Not so for this place. We hope that the owners learn from this experience.

With good food, a wonderful location and such graceful ambience, we hope this place succeeds.
