Chris Chase Salon

After moving to NYC almost 10 years ago, I tried a number of salons before discovering Robert Kree, Chris Chase's predecessor. What can I say? This place rocks! The talent is top notch, especially David and Cody, and the atmosphere is cool but comfy. I love this place, and you will, too.

I've been getting my hair cut by Rick for years, first at Robert Kree and now at Chris Chase. I feel so lucky to have found him-- Rick is an amazing stylist and a really great person to boot. He always knows exactly what to do with my hair to make it look great AND be easy to care for, and he listens to what I want. I can always count on a fantastic cut and a great, no hassle experience overall.

I've been getting my hair cut all over NYC for well over 11 years, most recently at a high-class fifth avenue salon. While my haircuts there have been good, Brian at Chris Chase proved to be even better...and at almost 1/2 the price! He gave a *perfect* haircut and, to top it off, the receptionist and everyone else working there were attentive and professional. It is also a beautiful place to visit. It has remarkable design details and is kept spotless. If you're looking for a superb men's haircut, check out Chris Chase and ask for Brian.

This is the best haircut I've had in years. David Benjamin is extremely talented. He said no matter how I dry my hair it will fall into place-and it does. I had three haircuts so far and it just gets better each time.
David is incredibly sweet, funny, and made me feel very comfortable.
I highly recommend David at this salon.

18 months ago I entered the Chris Chase Salon in a panic and full of desperation. The receptionist took the time to listen what my problems were concerning my hair and she paired me with my current stylist, Kristine Hahn. I have very difficult hair to work with, I'm fussy and particular about the way I want it to look. Every time I am there she hears what I'm saying and gives me a great cut with great style that I can work with at home. I never have to return to the salon for a touch up. She also does my highlights which are just slammin'!

Shane cut s and colors my hair. He is always terrific. Shane is easygoing, yet careful. He pays attention to what the client wants and is very skilled. Highly recommend.

Chris Chase Salon houses one of NYC's (if not the world's) best kept secrets: a super-talented haircutter (and more) named Oliver Steele. This man came straight out of the gifted and talented school of hair in Germany (where,unlike in the U.S.A., they don't let you get near a "real" (customer) human being until you've proven yourself for numerous years as an apprentice)... whatever they put him through overseas, he is absolutely unparalleled in his ability to create your own unique crowning glory: your hair... He is seasoned, highly gifted, gets your hair to do what it does best... the cuts are stunning and grow in beautifully, so you don't have to rush back in horror weeks later...

The salon is clean, service is friendly, most of the people who wash your hair have good hands and take the time to give a decent scalp massage.
Products smell great (their new line of shampoos/conditioners are wonderful!)

Oh and the bathrooms are very clean, a plus for any place of business in NYC-- or anywhere.

Oliver is a shining star there. And he can dance, too...

I have been going to David at the salon for years (first at Robert Kree--then to Chris Chase). David is the absolute best colorist for blondes in NYC. I had been on a search for over 10 years to find the right colorist who could give me a shade that I wanted. I found this in David AND also got the best cuts ever. My hair has been in the best condition in my dyed life with him as well. Besides being a pro, he is also one of my favorite people, along with the rest of the Chris Chase staff. I love them all and look forward to putting my hair in their hands!

A cleverly designed space that charms the eye. I feel pampered the minute I check in. As a long-time Chelsea resident I'm so happy I no longer have to leave the neighborhood to get the top quality cut ,color & service I became accustomed to over the years at John Barrett and Frederick Fekkai.

I highly recommend Chris Chase Salon, specifically John Kovacs (best cuts EVER including painlessly growing out very short hair) and Shane (perfect color ... FINALLY after many years of searching). They are both great at making sure you get the look that's right for you. Also, I got a Keratin treatement this summer from John that was "life-changing". I kid you not.

It's also a great, laid-back but stylish environment that's quite relaxing. Plus it's next door to Billy's Bakery. What's not to like about that?

I recently had a hair cut with David. He did an AMAZING job!! He took the time to talk with me about how I wanted my hair and gave great suggestions. Everyone in the salon was really nice and helped make the overall experience enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this salon- especially David!

John Kovacs has been cutting and styling my hair for over fifteen years and I was happy to follow him to this beautiful salon in Chelsea.
I get so many compliments on my hair, that I send everyone to John. Once he's cut your hair, you'll never go to anyone else. I would recommend him to anyone because he is a master who can cut all types of hair!

Pretentious and obnoxious and on top of it a bad haircut! I read all these great reviews, and expected to be blown away! These reviews are obviously written by the owners and workers. The only thing accurate is that it is a beautifuly decorated salon...But who cares about that when it comes down to it! For the prices they charge, I expect a great haircut and great friendly service! Got neither of the two!

I have followed Paul Cucinello around for the past 10 years as he is is the best colorist and hair designer I have EVER known. To top it off he is also a really good person. I started coming to the Chris Chase Salon when it opened and I really like the place. It is so beautiful to start and the staff is warm and friendly. You are offered a glass or wine (no I am not kidding), sparkling water or coffee, etc., served with the utmost style. No paper cups here! I always feel great after an experience at Chris Chase I highly recommend Paul as a premier hair designer and expert colorist at the Chris Chase salon.

I've lived in NYC for 17 years & have experienced the gamut of salons & stylists...John Kovacs at Chris Chase takes the cake! Not only does he embody what the salon is in & of itself - a very upscale, current ultraprofessional establishment that still manages to embody unpretentious sincerity & that neighborhood feel - he looks as good as the hair he does! No, really - gals ADORE getting their hair done by a hot guy.(Warren Beatty in Shampoo anyone?) And he's just as talented as he is handsome & conscientous. Everyone I've recommended him to has been over the moon. As I still am time after time. And he TAKES HIS TIME & most importantly, LISTENS to what you want. Gals love a fella who does that, too! Go. by far the 2 coolest people at chris chase, and without question the most talented at what they do. have seen both for a cut, and jessie for color.

jessie's color is better than any other stylist's i have noticed. if you're looking for a natural color, see. jessie. right. away. her cuts are fantastic as well.

jeff specializes in his cuts, men's and women's. started seeing him for blowouts (better then the rest...and i've seen a lot of them at chris chase) and then sneaking a cut here and there.

best part about this pair is they work together so well. i know they have teamed up for hair and makeup (jessie does the best makeup, and is the o n l y stylist at chris chase to do it) for events for versace and other fashion houses, as well as photo shoots.

2 young, hip stylists and worth the penny. (another thing, they're totally affordable and can usually book with them within a day's notice...) other suggestions on this site look to be solicited, but they don't know about my post... just had to do it, they're that amazing! (tip: both work on sundays, a quieter day at chris chase)

After reading all the great reviews, I contacted Chris Chase to see if they would be willing to do my hair onsite for my wedding. The woman I spoke to was in charge of hair for weddings & events. She was very nice and eventually called to tell me she had two people who could do it. I asked about price and she said she would get back to me. I called again and she said the owner still hadn't given her a $ amount. After a couple more calls and several more weeks, I finally just gave up and found someone else. I couldn't believe they couldn't even be bothered to call me back with a quote or a no!! Very poor customer service.

We had the wonderful experience of getting our hair cut and colored by Melissa at Chris Chase. We have been to many salons but have never been this happy with a color and cut before!! Melissa is top notch and is able to transform a drab head of hair into something beautiful! I would recommend Melissa to anyone who wants a great haircut and/or color in a friendly, welcoming atomosphere!!!

In my 3 years of living in NY, I've been to over a dozen high-end, major salons, and nothing compares to the cut and color I get with Shane Manieri at Chris Chase. People have actually stopped me on the street and at events to ask me who colors my hair! He's incredibly kind and fantastic to work with and I'd recommend EVERYONE visit him sometime soon!

I expected a good experience and high end people from such a high end salon. My stylist was great, but his assistant had such a bad attitude. Very RUDE. Salon was clean and products were good. But I will not go back. Too expensive for a bad attitude.

If you want a great haircut and color go visit Melissa Usry at Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea. She was unbelievable, and before you left her chair she made you feel incredible!!! She is extremely friendly and the salon is beautiful!! Melissa is one of the best stylists in the city, so if you want a great haircut definitely go see Melissa Usry!!!!

Every single employee at Chris Chase is kind and welcoming. The place is beautiful and super clean! The area is amazing....NOT bad like the previous review. Yoonski has cut my hair for over a year and always looks great. It looks great when I leave. It looks great when I style it and it looks great when it has grown out.I have also been to others, who all have been amazing! Book ahead of time because she is great! I miss Robert Kree but Chris Chase is just as great! I recommend this place to anyone and everyone! Go and see Yoonski! Seriously!

This salon lacks everything! VERY tackey decor, unfriendly staff, and a bad location! even the wine was sour! the only decent experience I had there was my haircut which did not make up ffor the atmosphere! Its directly across the street from the Chelsea housing projects! I got harassed by hoodlems hanging out on the street outside after my haircut on top of it! Not a safe block! I will not go back!

I have had my blond highlights done by Paul for close to a decade now. It was only when I made the mistake of trying out someone new(due to a scheduling conflict) that my color went from a natural buttery hue to a fried, brassy mess. Flash forward two, troubled, and traumatized years later, my hair (back to my natural color) was at least healthy enough to highlight once again. Imagine my fear when I was told from the receptionist at his previous salon that he was no longer there! Luckily, I learned that he was nearby at the elegant, cozy, and beautiful Chris Chase Salon. I hardly had to say a thing to Paul. He gave one look and knew exactly what to do. I am newly blond again and I look five years younger. I feel so reassured now that my hair will be fantastic at my upcoming wedding in August. I would follow Paul anywhere he went. He is truly talented and the only person I trust completely with my hair.

Shane at Chris Chase is a master! He's been cutting my curly hair for 10 years, and he knows how to deal with everything from my difficult hairline to frizzy bangs and insane cowlicks. Shane will follow your instructions faithfully, but I prefer to let him lead the way. I am easily bored, and Shane is fearless, so he's seen me through a whole spectrum of styles--from cascading ringlets to a quarter-inch pixie cut--even styles no other hairdresser would dare try on my curly hair.

With every new look, Shane makes sure to discuss the maintenance issues involved in the style before he starts cutting--essential for curly hair. He is always realistic about what I'll be able to achieve on my own, and is willing to take the time to teach me important tips and tricks. He's even suggested that I postpone trying maintenance-intensive styles until winter, when the dryer weather will minimize frizz potential. It is this kind of care and thoughtful attention to detail that keep me coming back.

Shane is an experienced and talented stylist, but his standout work is as a colorist. With his painterly techniques, he creates flawless, totally realistic color...even as I've started to go gray. He can go from conservative to edgy and everything in between.

I would follow Shane anywhere, but I was thrilled when he moved to Chris Chase. The salon is stylish without being pretentious, and the support staff is professional and discreet. They have gone out of their way to accommodate emergency last-minute appointments, and I have never had to wait more than a few minutes before I'm relaxing in the chair with a glass of champagne or a cup of tea. I would recommend Chris Chase Salon -- and Shane especially -- to anyone looking for a long-term relationship with a collaborative-minded stylist.

Oh my god Chris chase is So fierce!! This is the best salon EVER!!!!everyone so like so mega talented!!! oh my god So TRENDY!!! totally trendy!!! fierce decorations!!! totally trendy and goth!!! People need to stop bad mouthing this place! it is NOT tackey or depressing!!! Shane has been styling my hair for 5 years now and he is AMAZING!!!. He has seen me through many phases from platinum blonde pixie cut to long soft dark hair and everything in between. Shane has always done what I've requested to the tee and given recommendations and been creative when I have allowed him, always with amazing results (btw, the best cuts have always been the ones I gave him free range on). I think his ability to listen to me as his client and stay true to my desires while injecting creativity wherever possible makes him an amazing stylist. He is a perfectionist so not to worry there won't be a hair out of place or uneven. Since I too am a perfectionist I love his attention to detail. He will make you look classy or funky or anything that shows off your personal style. I couldn't be happier with his move to Chris Chase. This salon is a dream. It is chic, modern romantic feel that is inspiring and relaxing. I would pack up and move there if I could. The place makes you feel like royalty and trust me you won't leave there looking any less than that. Its not an inexpensive salon, but its not unreasonable either (it is NYC). They serve tea, wine and champagne. Everyone there is so nice I can't imagine anyone leaving there disappointed. I have never waited more than 5 mins for my appointment. GO TO CHRIS CHASE & GET YOUR HAIR DONE WITH SHANE!! YOU WON'T GO BACK TO ANYONE ELSE!

I love this place so much. It's so refreshing to just enjoy getting your hair done. Good atmosphere, good coffee, good wine (or champagne!) And how about the idea that when you leave, you look like a movie star? Not too bad for a cool new slaon I must say. Take your time choosing a stylist there- they're all excellent. I go to Paul C. and I'm so happy with the gorgeous brown he makes my hair cause it looks so shiny and real. Run, don't walk there. You don't know what you're missing!

I have been seeing Paul for like 6 years now for my color and I can honsetly say that he is THE BEST. My color always looks beautiful and natural. Whatever he does to it is amazing! I'm always thrilled to walk out the door looking and feeling like a million bucks. We honestly just sit there and laugh the entire time he's a great guy! (and I never even have to tell him what i want to do to my hair cause he already knows!) The salon is stunningly beautiful and the staff is so cool and laidback. (The owners are delightful and they always make it a point to come over, smile and say hello.) If you get a blowout ask for Paul's assistant Jenna...she gets right down to business on your head from the shampoo to the blowdry- it's flawless! Love Chris Chase...wouldn't ever go ANYWHERE else. The compliments on my color never stop.

I have lived in New York for about a year and a half and have tried different hairdressers in the Tribeca and Upper East side area. John Kovacs definitely stands out. He is extremely talented and has had great ideas whenever I have not been able to decide on the specific cut. I also enjoy going to him as he is very pleasant and the service in the salon is great.

I HAD BEEN A CUSTOMER OF ROBERT KREE YRS AGO AND WAS RECENTLY IN THE CITY ON BUSINESS AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CREW HAD MOVED TO GLAMOROUS NEW DIGS ON 21ST & 9TH....NO ONE CAN WALK BY THIS AMAZING NEW SPACE WITHOUT STOPPING...AT FIRST GLANCE YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THIS BUSINESS IS...IS IT A MODERN TEA ROOM? MINIMAL EUROPEAN BOUTIQUE? CHIC HOTEL LOBBY? THE OWNERS HAVE TAKEN IT SO FAR BEYOND THE EXPECTED-STERILE-COOKIE-CUTTER HAIR SALON ENVIRONMENT, THAT YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOU WALKED INTO A TONY LITTLE BOUTIQUE HOTEL AND YOUR FAVORITE, TALENTED STYLIST COMES UP AND STARTS CROPPING YOUR LOCKS. I HAD SUCH A NICE, RELAXING TIME. AND MY HAIRCUT ROCKED! John Kovacs is an artist. My wife has been going to John for several years and I am always amazed with his ability to keep things fresh and current withough being drastic. I am the typical guy (had never spent more than $25 on a haircut) but after seeing the quality of his work I decided to splurge. Well it has been over three years now and I am constantly impressed with the effort that goes into each cut and the results.

This is a rebuttal to "The Depression Chamber" review! First of all...If you are looking for a CHEAP salon, go to Billy Bob's House O' Beauty. Chris Chase is the place to go if your goal is an environment that will excite and relax you at the same time, make you feel like a movie star and their best pal at the same time, and get a great haircut/color/whatever when all is said and done. I used to go to Robert Kree, and definitely loved it there. It reminded me of a chill beach house....but now it's kind of like they've grown up a bit and created a really exquisite atmosphere where all the friendly faces stayed the same.
This 'salon and spa critic' needs to learn grammar and spelling before he/she tries to get a website going, and I have already decided based on this 1 negative out of the 40 positive reviews Chis Chase has gotten, that they have no clue what they are talking about. If you give off the vibe that you are an "ugly person" that may be how you end up being treated, but the few times I've been here, everyone I saw had a smile on their face and couldn't say enough how amazing the space looked. No bad attitudes to be seen for miles...
As far as the visual vibe there, I've never seen anything like it....but then again, I've never been to Billy Bob's either. Maybe I'm missing out by setting my standards high enough to make sure i go to one of the coolest salons in the City. Either way, I love it here and think everyone should at least just walk by to see how beautiful it is.

Hi i'm a salon and spa critic who goes around the city and searches for the best and cheap if available places in the city. I went to this place when i went in i felt like i was in a dark universe of the world . Everything
thing is blck or white and chrome . I guess they try to make u look good when everything around you looks black . And when you come out everything looks ugly even you . Well i made my appointment it took them 1/2 hour just for my butt to sit in a chair. Which by the way is bad for your back . And all i kept hearing is this girl that was getting her hair done talking on her black berry of crouse all day long . I could'nt even hear my self think for a minute. Then the stylist was horrible she kept on trying to tell me what i should do to my hair. And the staff is very unfreindly everyone looks like they are to go for them self . Everything looks like some crazy fashion mob scene. AND NO UGLY PEOPLE WELCOME KIND OF THING . If you like to be treated and feel more like home and a place where u want to relax DONT COME HERE .

another devotee of John Kovacs here..... I have difficult hair and he makes it do what I want. He pays individual attention to each of my cowlicks so they fall in the right place. I tell him I don't have time to blowdry it and he makes sure I don't have to. He is also a genuinely nice guy to chat with while you sit in his chair. And the salon looks cool from the outside but is friendly and unpretentious within.

Pros: great sylist in a great salon

Cons: if you're on a diet you may have a hard time resisting the bakery next door

I have been having John Kovacs cut and style my hair for years at Space -- But I see that now that he has moved he has a new vitality and "joie de vie." He seems really happy and in his element and a happy hair stylist makes for a happy client. He has always been a doll and I have sent many friends to him -- all who agree that he is the best. Whenever I come back from getting my hair cut I get stopped to ask "who cuts your hair? It looks great."

I went into an absolute panic when I heard that the Robert Kree Salon was closing... but was relieved to know that Rick, my favorite stylist of all time, would be moving to the Chris Chase Salon. The salons don't look anything alike (Chris Chase is very glitsy and glam whereas Robert Kree was very romantic and quaint) but don't let that scare you off... because the service and hospitality is alive and well at Chris Chase! Order a cup of green tea or a glass of wine and let the pampering begin! If you are lucky enough to book with Rick, who does fabulous colour and an exceptional blow-out, say hello for me!

Pros: Much better parking options than Robert Kree.

Cons: Need to look past all the shiny chrome.

I've been going to him for ages now and would follow him anywhere-- even to a shiny glitzy salon in Chelsea!!
He's the best at what he does and always makes me feel like a million bucks.
He and his assistant, Luis give un-hurried, un-matched service.

And unlike many stylists, he really listens to what you want and gives it to you.

I dutifully followed my stylist, John Kovacs, to Chris Chase Salon and was not disappointed. John is, hands down, one of the best sylists in NYC so much so that I consistently get stopped in the street about my haircut! I have referrred a number of people to him who have all become very loyal clients. His meticulous nature and great client service make him such a find but I urge you to check him out for yourself!! Chris Chase Salon is a great new home for John. The energy and aesthetic of the place (oh, and the free wine doesn't hurt) will make your first or next visit there a truly great experience!

Happy to get my hair cut at this new salon. I'm a devoted client of John Kovac's. Was wary to move to another salon, hoping it woldn't be snooty/trendy. Happy to say it wasn't. I was treated well. Many of us are devoted to John K, and want to spread the word to others. Hence the many posts about him. Let him cut your hair. You'll see.

I found Cody upon the recommendation of one of his clients. She boasted about how great he is with high-lights so I decided to give him a try. I have to say after trying so many salons around NY I think I've found a keeper. He was very upbeat and knowledgeable and made it a wonderful experience. My blowout was amazing and my hair felt wonderful.

The salon is very beautiful but on the simple side but I would definitely recommend giving Cody a try. Who is this John dude with all the reviews??? Are we posting for ourselves now? Lol!

The service is also nice, I like the sparkling water with lemon. It's a cool place to just relax.

Great salon, great stylist!

As a new client at Chris Chase Salon, I have been delighted by its restful elegance and its competent, accommodating, welcoming staff. I appreciate a great shampoo, a receptionist who graciously stored a lot of baggage for me while I did an errand before catching a train, the offer of good coffee or wine. But what brought me to Chris Chase was that the salon has bagged the best hair stylist I have found in years of globetrotting: John Kovacs. John's ability to optimize face shape, hair texture, and individual customer taste is unique in my experience. He literally sculpts hair to face, strand by strand. I have watched him do this with other clients whose requirements differ completely from mine. We all agree: these haircuts last and last because the shaping is perfect. I travel four hours each way to get my hair cut by John and will continue to do so.

there's way too many reivews for this john fellow. looks to me like he's writing his own reivews.

i used to go to Robert Kree for years i loved it!! It had a style, comfort and a down to earth attitude.
i followed to chris chase when my original stylist i went to for years mela moved and i can't seem to find her. michael has been doing my hair since and is great!! . although i don't like the salon itself the stations seem to be too close to each other and packed too closely it's uncomfortable when you can hear the other person conversation. if anybody knows where my australian stylist moved to please let me know.

Pros: michael is great
