Went here last week after going to a gallery opening across the street. Cozy place with good food and great drinks. My friend who had been to Candela Candela before said I had to try one of their mojitos, turned out to be really good

After reading all these mediocre reviews on Yelp, I was really hesitant to come here. However, I really couldn't resist Scoutmobs' 50% off coupon. Besides, I didn't have a plan for that night so Candela Candela seemed like a good option right then.

I saw Yelp labeled this place as an Italian restaurant and I have to agree that by looking at the decor and menu, it did look like an Italian place. After another look however, you start seeing paella, plantain and other exotic dishes. I asked the waiter and it turns out this is not just Italian but also Cuban fusion.

We got the Octopus Salad, la paella and churrasco steak. The octopus salad is fresh and full of flavor. It comes in generous portion too. My la paella is a little bit wet but I am no paella expert so I don't know if it is cooked correctly or overly moist. It tastes good either way. There are a lot of shrimp, mussels and scallops.

My boyfriend's churrasco steak was very flavorful, tender and it comes with plantain chips. I think the chips were a little over-fried but overall it was a good plate.

Service was great and atmosphere was very chill. I would come back for another dining experience.

I came in for brunch today just looking for a place with a nice selection of eggs for myself as well as lunch for my friend. I had about 10 different egg options to choose from, bloody marys and mimosas! My friend got a nice cuban sandwich and some mojitos. Everything was so good we decided to stay, drink more mojitos and then we were ready to eat more food. This time we switched to the regular menu and got the buffalo mozzarella appetizer and then we split an entree called ropa vieja. After spending hours hanging out and having fun I thought I was going to have to empty my bank account. The check was surprisingly not expensive and i couldnt have had a better time. Shout out to the staff!!

Avoid.. Bad bruschetta (unless soggy bread is what you desire), and happy hour saga.

Visiting New York, dropped in for 2 for 1 happy hour margaritas with my wife, only to discover it was a scam = $24 for 2 mediocre margaritas.

Not happy.. No joy in getting ripped off, no matter the hour

The sign read 2 for 1. One each right? Nope, wrong.

When I enquired after receiving our cheque, I was told by a husky voiced man, that it was bar service only. Then the owner clarified that it was 'per person'?? That every bar/restuarant in New York does it like that. Conveniently as this conversation took place, the sign was inconspicously taken inside... (Before 5pm)

This is a shifty operation people..

Bad atmosphere.
The place could be great if the staff was a little more educated and kindly.
Or if the food was a little more seriously made. Not cold and not with hair.
If the music was italian or cuban and not Madonna or Coldplay.
If the some people didn't smoke inside it. Because we really can smells it.
The mojitos are goods... I wouldnt come back again.

I stumbled upon this little Cuban-Italian restaurant a few months ago while looking for a place to grab some wine with my girlfriend. The appetizers we ordered were bland and the sangria left something to be desired. I made a return trip last week to celebrate a friends birthday...he lives in the East Village and swears by this place...and I was blown away. The mojitos and specialty martinins were top notch, the food was tasty and the portion sizes were huge. I had the grilled calamari salad to start which was tender and left me wishing I had ordered a second one! My date ordered the minestrone soup which was equally delicious. (I heaped on the parmesan cheese but the broth was still flavorful on its own). For my entree I had the sesame tuna...a sashimi grade tuna steak crusted with 4 kinds of flavored sesame seeds and topped with a balsamic reduction...I didn't need a knife to cut through it. Eggplant taglione was my girlfriends second course. Hand made pasta really has a different taste and texture...delicious. Our waiter was friendly and well versed in the food and drinks being served. When I asked why the food was so much better than my last experience, he informed me that a new chef had recently taken over the reins in the kitchen. My friends and I had a great night out and wouldn't hesitate to come back.

I had a wonderful experience at Candela Candela. I felt right at home with the friendly staff and warm atmosphere. I started at the bar with red wine as I waited for my husband. The bartender was friendly and helpful she suggested the specials which were the Lobster Croquette appetizer and the Cuban Skirt Steak as an entree. I decided to heed her advice. When my husband arrived, we were promptly seated and tried the appetizer special which was delicious. I talked the hubby into the steak and I tried the spinach salad which were both wonderful. I had a good experience at Candela and would recommend it to my friends.

I don't usually write reviews, but I had a really great day in my new neighborhood. I just moved to the East Village and I went to Candela for brunch. I had an afternoon cappuccino. I ordered a margherita pizza which was great. I talked to the friendly waitress and was able to relax and enjoy my day. Later that week I went for dinner. I had minestrone soup, and a glass of montepulciano. I also noticed the music that they played Each time I went I felt comfortable and welcomed. I think this is difficult to find in NY, and perfect for this fall weather. Next time, Im bringing my friends.

WOW! Candela Candela is an all around great restaurant choice. My boyfriend and I were unsure of where to eat tonight and then we saw this quaint little place with outdoor candle lit seating. As we looked over the menu outside, immediately an employee greeted us.
Since it the place is known for thier mojitos we both got one....they were fab!!!!
I had the perugina and my boyfriend had the pasta special (all homemade pasta by the way!). Everything was truly unbelievable.

I deffinetly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys great service, fine wine and fabulous food.

The east village was packed and this place was the only place that we could get an immediate table for 5 and I realized why. It was possibly the worst restaurant i've ever been to in New York. It started off by our waiter actually going to the deli across the street to get POM juice for the mojito's. He returned 20 minutes later with our appetizers that appeared to have been brought in from subway. Our dinner was not much better, the chicken dishes tasted like rubber and my pasta with seafood for $24 tasted worse than the olive garden. The waiter reminded me of the crypt keeper with his eyeliner. All in all probably the worst dining experience EVER. please, do yourself and anyone you know a favor, NEVER GO THERE!!!. in fact, i just started dating a girl and had the worst gas attack after eating at this place, that i can't believe she endured a night at my apt.

Enticed by a mojito happy hour (5 bucks!), we popped in and planted it on the bar. The music was mellow and different than you tend to hear at restraunts. My date and I each had a pomagranet mojito, which was very tasty. As we were sitting there gabbing we noticed that the food looked (and Smelled) incredible. Now starving, we sat for dinner, blattently pointing out that we wanted "that big seafood dish that she's eating". It was a dinner special of all grilled seafood in a white wine and citris marinade. Really really good. plus tasty fresh baked bread, and a second dish called Perugina that was fantastic. We shared everything, and had a great meal.

Overall, great food presentation, nice classy vibe without being hauty, and friendly attentive waiters. The food beat out my expectations by a landslide, and still didn't completely bankrupt my wallet. I'm very glad i found this place.

I live around the corner from this place and discovered it when I moved in. I've pretty much become a regular there. They serve the best mojitos in the city in my opinion. Their pasta is great (especially the pesto ravioli and the lasagna). BUT I really love seafood, so the Salmon and the Sesame Tuna dishes are my favorite. I also like the Mussels they have there too for appetizers... but its a big thing of mussels, so it could function pretty well as a meal itself.
Service is good. Atmosphere is nice. Food is great. The bread you get before you eat is not my favorite, but people I've taken there have liked it... Summing everything up into plain words: I like this place enough to write a review on it. (That means I really like it)

PS. Sometimes they have like a $5 mojito at the bar for like a Happy Hour but I haven't figured out if theres actually a set time for when this happens...

My Partner & I visited on 4/25 & had a completely delightful experience. We wanted to sit outside, but the evening was a bit too chilly so we headed indoors. My Partner is in a wheelchair & when we saw the crowed dining room & bar area we almost turned around however, 4 staff members were very quickly in attendence. 3 went ahead to clear a path while the 4th (who turned out to be our Waiter) escorted us to a lovely table at the front window. Once settled, we were immediately offered water which arrived promptly (& @proper temp.) as did menus & wine list. We began w/ the Mejillanoes. The flavor was perfection. The mussels fresh & tender, the liquor beautifully seasoned. Buttery & flavorful. The balance between wine and broth delightful. I initially chose the Salmon but was told by our Waiter (who also served as the luncheon chef) that the salmon was not good that evening. He felt it was not fresh & refused to serve it. Lucky Me! I then opted for the Perugina! It was one of the loveliest dishes I have tasted. It was tender & again balanced beautifully. The gorgonzola fondue was a delight. The texture smooth & creamy & the flavor rich & sweet with just the proper touch of bite. My Partner chose Ravioli. She was thoroghly pleased. I tasted a bite & while it was very good, it did not rise to the excellence to which I am accustomed when eating her marvelous homemade pasta. I cannot recall the wine :), but it was rich, deep, & served promptly (no corkscrew issues here). At some point, our Waiter must have overheard that it was my 50th. At the end of our meal I was gifted with a tiramasu. Again lovely & flavorful. All in all, this was a wonderful experience filled w/delicious food, wine & prompt, attentive service. I am not by nature an over-tipper. That night, I was & no, it wasn't the wine... GO! Enjoy! Based on observation of fellow diners, perhaps your additude influences staff attitude? Just a thought...

my two friends and i made the mistake of dropping in on this place after we couldn't get a table at nearby frank. we ordered wine, 1 caprese salad, 2 spaghetti carbonera and 1 antipasti. after placing our orders, no one talked to us for 15 minutes. i stopped the waiter and asked about our wine, and he said he would bring it out. he brought out the wine. another 15 minutes passed by, and the waiter came back to the table to ask me, "what do you mean caprese salad? we don't have that." i looked at the menu and pointed to "caprese," which happened to fall in the "appetizer" section, rather than salad. he then said "well you said salad, and we don't have a salad." this seemed like a pretty simple point at an italian restaurant, and i wasn't sure why he got so huffy about it.

the busboy then brought out 1 carbonara and 1 vegetable antipasti (my friend ordered regular antipasti). i said to the busboy, "i don't think this is our order - she had regular antipasti, and we had two carbonaras." he then brought the waiter back, and the waiter said, "this is what you ordered - 1 carbonara and 1 vegetable antipasti." he left my carbonara on the table while my two friends waited. after 20 minutes, he brought out the regular antipasti. i then asked about my friend's remaining carbonara. he said "what carbonara?" and i said, "the one we just explained about before." he then left us without any explanation for another 20 minutes so that he could take a smokebreak in our line of vision on the patio. i flagged him down again to ask about my friend's carbonara, and he said they were "working on it" in the kitchen. i asked why it was taking so long, and he said "what do you want me to do about it? kitchen is downstairs" - as if we had designed the restaurant to our own detriment. after the other carbonara came out, no one talked to us the rest of the meal. we then complained to the manager, and she shot us a dirty look and gave us the bill - no apologies!! awful!

the busboy then brought out 1 carbonara and 1 vegetable antipasti (my friend ordered regular antipasti). i said to the busboy, "i don't think this is our order - she had regular antipasti, and we had two carbonaras." he then brought the waiter back, and the waiter said, "this is what you ordered - 1 carbonara and 1 vegetable antipasti." he left my carbonara on the table while my two friends waited. after 20 minutes, he brought out the regular antipasti. i then asked about my friend's remaining carbonara. he said "what carbonara?" and i said, "the one we just explained about before." he then left us without any explanation for another 20 minutes so that he could take a smokebreak in our line of vision on the patio. i flagged him down again to ask about my friend's carbonara, and he said they were "working on it" in the kitchen. i asked why it was taking so long, and he said "what do you want me to do about it? kitchen is downstairs" - as if we had designed the restaurant to our own detriment. after the other carbonara came out, no one talked to us the rest of the meal. we then complained to the manager, and she shot us a dirty look and gave us the bill - no apologies!! awful!

We waited for 40 minutes to be served "Egg Florentina" and the Egg Florentina didn't come with Spinach. There were not many customers but the service was terribly slow and awfull. The wait stuff cooks as well. I will NEVER go back to the place.

We went in without reservations on Saturday night. The owner, Ziva, was lovely and warm and welcoming and seated us without any issues. And the bartender was good too. But that was where the service ended. The waitstaff were unbelievably disorganized, only one guy knew how to use a corkscrew so we had to wait for our wine, no one even offered to tell us what the specials were, and the service was unbelievably slow - especially considering how empty the place was. The food was very good, but unless the waitstaff gets their act together, this is not a place we'd go back to, though we live just a block away.

This place was great. I loved the Cuban Italian twist. The ceviche was superb. The mojito I had with my meal was fantastic. I ate outside and was very pleased to see that the menu was mixed with seafood and tapas. The service was ok, but the meal was superb. I really enjoyed having the Italian, Cuban mixture. I had a fantastic sandwich and my wife enjoyed the tapas. We both shared some ceviche and that was scrumptuos. Overall, the food was really good. It was worth the wait. I ate outside and it was sunset and set the mood for the wife and I. The mojito's helped too.

My friends and I were walking by and decided to give this place a try. We started with the watered-down, church wine-like sangria but tried to stay positive by saying, "At least it's not too sweet." We then got our food and it was appallingly bad. I got the ropa vieja with rice and beans and the portion was tiny for the price, but more importantly, it was tasteless. The cook must not have used any seasoning and I had to pile on the salt. My friends got some of the Italian dishes, and they too were underwhelmed - one said that the sauce for the gnocchi tasted like it came from a can. The food tasted like bad frozen meals. My girlfriend lucked out by getting appetizers for her entree because, despite being made with cheap ingredients, they were semi-decent... except for the souflee that didn't come out until everyone else had finished their meal... and was cold in the middle. And the thing that bothered me the most? I ordered a draft beer and it was thin and tasteless - they watered down my beer! The service was almost passable, but does it really matter if inedible food and watered down drinks get to you in a timely fashion? This place seems to cut every corner possible. I guess the best thing is that we will probably be looking back and laughing about out bad experience for a while. With all the good places to eat in New York, this place probably won't last too long, so if you want a memorably bad meal, get to this place while it's still open. Otherwise, just walk down the block to some other restaurant - even if its bad, it won't be as bad as this place.

Came here on Cinqo de Mayo with friends. Never again. As we were going in, people leaving seemed angry. We should have paid attention. The mojitos were good, but the service was outrageously slow. And a couple that had been sitting next to us complained because the waiter included his gratuity without their permission. His explanation was that he thought they were tourists. Since it literally took hours for us to get a few drinks, we wound up ordering the guacamole. It was a pretty paltry amount and came with an even smaller plate of plantain chips, for which they tried to charge us $4, claiming that they weren't included with the guac. Seriously? I can't remember the last time I was so infuriated with a restaurant. We actually began warning prospective diners away as we were sitting there.

I recently visited Candela Candela for the first and last time. Our group was charged $50 for a pitcher of the worst mojitos ever made. The rude bartender successfully soured our entire evening with his disgusting drinks and bad attitude.

Went to CC on a weeknight shortly after their opening and could see the usual problems a newly-opened restaurant experiences. If you go, be patient as the kitchen isn't perfect and the Bar is backed up. The payoff will be some of the best, freshest food you can find in the neighborhood. The three empanada appetizer is freshly made and amazing and their take on the Caesar Salad is great departure from the usual heavy dressing and croutons. Wine list is affordable and well-rounded for an East Village space. At the end of the night, our server offered to discount our bill due to slow service... but nonetheless CC may just become a weekly habit of ours

The space was lovely - outdoor seating, a very nice comfortable indoor area. The food on the other hand was not impressive. We ordered the seafood ceviche which tolerable to say the least. The seafood tasted a few days old and the seasonings were bland. The tropical salad with papaya, mango and calamri had no wow factor. The papaya didn't taste fresh and for the little calamari that was included in the salad also did not taste fresh. My friend got the sea bass and it was very "fishy." We all know that fish isn't actually supposed to taste fishy. I got the seafood risottta, which was more like an orzo tomato soup with some mussels, shrimps and bad tasting clams. My friend got a parmeson-cauliflower dish that came out cold. We were disappointed overall. BUT i could see coming back here for happy hour and sitting outside. I would go elsewhere for dinner.

this place is horrible. mojito bar? if you want a mojito that taste like sprit maybe. food was either way over cooked or way under. I'm a new yorker and I feel like i walked into a tourist trap on second ave. could be one of the worst spots I've eaten at since I ate at an applebees in Kansas 10 yrs ago.

the only reason I gave it a 1 was the decor was decent.

My friends and I tried this restaurant last night. It has sidewalk appeal but do not be fooled. My $18 steak was overcooked & fatty and the service is rude and unaccommodating. The waiter did not write down our orders and got my friend's entree wrong. By the time her correct entree arrived the rest of us had finished eating. The waiter silently dropped the check on our table that incorrectly included a more expensive wrong entree. When we asked for compensation for the entree mistake and bad experience we were yelled at "You eat, you pay!"

I've never sent food back but we had to here! we all really wanted to like the food but it was very bland and even the wine seemed watered down. service was random, the owner/hostess was sweet but some of the waiters needed attitude adjustments.
I would have preferred to wait to eat nextdoor for 2 hrs then eat here again.
I would only recommend coming here to sit out side and have a beer to people watch.

I've just registered for City Search simply to warm people of this horrible restaurant. It has the dual whammy of worst service and worst food I've ever experienced. I honestly can't begin to articulate how horrible the food was -- but be warned: the pizza is a lump of bread; the shrimp comes in a geletin cream; and the salads use days-old iceberg lettuce (I actually like iceberg lettuce, but not on a "dulce" salad of gargonzola and walnuts). The icreberg lettuce salad took a full hour to arrive at the table, and came with a side of salsa (not sure why). The bread basket arrived with the pizza. The waiter forgot our order 4 times, and then brought the wrong wine. I can go on and on. I'm a local who regularly eats at Franks. My advice is to simply wait for a table at Franks. You'll end up waiting an hour to two hours for horrible food, and horrible service, at this joint even if you get a table immediately. On my way out a woman at the bar was asking for her check -- "Please just let me pay. I don't even want to wait for the food. I just want to get our of here!". My thoughts exactly.
