The food was good. The decor and lighting were awesome. Good wine selection. The wait staff was friendly (albeit very busy). The tables were a bit close, so much so that I felt several times as if I was in the middle of someone else's

After reading some of the reviews we were a bit hesitant about eating here. It's a lovely, inviting place. In the heart of the village, cozy (we like cozy, though some refer to this as cramped)...so what's not to like? Nothing as far as we're concerned. Nice people and Great food. Good recommendations from our waiter. We shared a charcuterie appetizer plate which is something I usually don't order but this was terrific. A wonderful selection. All our entrees were excellent. My only con was I think they should turn off the music which leaned toward rock which is entirely inappropriate in a place which most people (even the naysayers) say is romantic. I say cut the music entirely and let people talk and hear one another. I for one am tired of screaming in too many New York restaurants. Good place, Great people.

Pros: Covered patio, Fire, Great service, food

Cons: No bar to sit and wait at

Want the perfect restaurant for that first date? This is it. It's nestled in the heart of the W. Village and it's very romantic and cozy inside. The food is really good and the service is wonderful.

I am finally back in bed after spending the morning in the bathroom. The fish I had was very fishy last night and when I complained the manager she said this was how it was supposed to be. Just something to think about when you're booking a reservation.

Pros: Outdoor area

Cons: The hostess and the food

August has ambiance nailed down. Romantic and cozy without being over the top. Immediate comfort as you walk in the door. Service is friendly without pretense, and the food is fabulous. Definitely one of the best in the west village!

I am giving this restaurant 5 stars for its 5 star service and 5 star food. I went for the first time yesterday for dinner and had such an amazing experience I must find a reason to go back soon. I had the pimenton mussels to start and the beef for my entree. Both were delicious. Mmm. This is a restuarant in the city that you must try at least once.

My husband and I walked into this little place, and the hostess immediately asked us if we'd like a table in the back. The back? We had no idea. We walked back to this area that looked like a little secret garden. How perfect. The food was perfect, and really reasonable.
This place was the perfect brunch for our last day in NYC!

Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service

Went to dinner here last week for Restaurant week and my friends and I were quite impressed by the quality of the food and the setting. The dishes were on the small side, very typical of most restaurant week menus, though well thought out and well executed. We supplemented our restaurant week dishes with a couple of apps, namely a delicious chicken liver dish and a summer bean salad that was very refreshing and one of those dishes that really made you feel the seasonality of its components. The wine list was well composed with a nice range of prices and options. It's refreshing to see a list that focuses on European wines. While the service was competent and most satisfactory, it was definitely the weak point of a strong showing; not precisely what I would term warm and hospitable. All in all I would certainly return to this place to further explore the menu.

I don't know what's going on with this place, but the last time I went, it was awful. Bad food, nasty service and too pricey for what they're serving. I'm a food professional myself and would not recommend this place to anyone -- the atmosphere is nice but that doesn't make up for all the other negatives, namely the food. The diners are the next table were complaining about the food as well the night we were there, and several friends have said they noticed this place has gone downhill as well.

I walked in not knowing anything about the place. It was getting windy and I could tell that my girlfriend was getting tired of just walking around the village. I have to say I was upset when we first entered and we stood for a few minutes just waiting for our presence to be acknowledged. I almost left when the Hostess took us in the back to be seated. It was then where I was impressed. The back room is filled with small tables and inclosed in all glass. Very nice. I ordered a burger which had some of the best seasoned fries ever. In the end I'll go back. I let the hostess slide this time.

I walked in on a colder rainy night, and only had to wait about 15 minutes before getting a table. The food and wine were outstanding! Very cozy atmosphere, although the place is a little on the smaller side. Only bad thing to say is the flight of stairs down to the bathroom tested my repelling/moutaineering skills... ONLY TRY IT SOBER!!!

I recommend the Tarte for an appetiser and the Pepper Steak for the main dish... was too full to try anything else.

Great Date Place!!!

I was trying to arrange a nice pre-christmas datenight. I'm a foodie and have plenty of industry buds who noted, despite being around for a minute, the place is cute and the food is good. I read the reviews and thought I would book a reservation anyway. 2 days before the actual reservation, they called to confirm for the wrong evening. When I told them the correct night, they said it was going to be a problem. (Um, glad you called?) I settled for another evening, only to receive another call with the wrong reservation information AGAIN! I dropped it. If you cant get a res right (twice), the reviews are starting to read like theyre not far off. If you try it, maybe you're better avoiding the reservation process...

Pros: decor, location

Cons: obviously blind reservationist - hope she finds you a table.

I had brunch there today for the first time. The prices were fine and not outrageous and the service was acceptable but nothing above that. Definitely the ambiance was rustic, quant, and had a sort of country, cozy, personality...very homey like...which i liked. I ordered the ham, egg, and cheese crepe and it was excellent, my wife had the german pancake which was only ok. I'd definitely go back, because I also love that part of town.

The wine, appetizers and atmosphere were great. The service was digusting and the entrees were totally under-cooked. We asked why they were cooked so rare (pork chop and steak) and instead of taking them back - or even offering to, the waiter said "because the chef thinks this is the appropriate temperature" and walked away. When he brought the check ($230.00) I again said that we were REALLY disappointed given that we barely touched our entrees and he said "it's too bad you have your check because we would've offered you a free dessert." We had really high expectations for this restaurant, but realize, if we wanted good food and service, we probably should've just gone to Cookshop, our faithful standby.

we were excited to try August and it sucked! the octopus flatbread ($16) had 4 small pieces of octopus. The lamb chops was the greasiest thing i have ever eaten. The whole fish was dry and was about 4 bites in total. It took one hour and 15 minutes to receive our entree...

The service is worse than the food - the waiter never checked on us. Didnt comp us anything after we complained and the bill was $150. I am now going to get a slice of pizza to fill up.

I can not see how anyone thinks this place is good!!!!!

Pros: leaving

Ambience is nice in the garden. Staff was impatient and sour, unable to accomodate even the smallest requests off the menu (including "melted butter" or "sliced lemon"which were needed to make the food palatable) !! The food was fair to ok...my artichoke was dry and tasteless but the trout was good, on the whole very inconsistent. There is little attention to detail, for instance the bathrooms were unkempt and a peek of the kitchen downstairs was scary!

Word of caution - anyone with high blod pressure or heart issues, stay away from August. We could not drink enough water, and still left feeling parched. The ambiance is cute, and service good, but the chef certainly does have a heavy hand with the salt. $190 later, we were totally let down.

August is adorable! I'd only been to August for brunch - which i'm addicted to - and I decided to try it for dinner this past Thursday with an out of town friend. We had such a lovely time, and I'm so glad I finally did it. The food was scrumptious, - we started with an outrageous bacon and onion flatbread tart that was out of this world. We shared the rabbit (they have another name for it on the menu, I can't remember what it was called ) and the trout - which was like a sandwich with vegetables and melon inbetween 2 pieces of trout - wow!! we are chocoholics we we couldn't pass up their chocolate creme dessert- we had such a great time and our waiter made excellent food and wine recommendations - i had to be rolled out, but i have a new addiction!

I don't normally post reviews, but felt so compelled after my evening at August tonight for restaurant week - usually i expect restaurant week menus to be supbar to the regular menu - but I was so blown away by my options tonight at August and both me and my guest devoured our food - to start i had lamb meatballs, a greek dish with a yummy salad of bulgur and parsley and my friend had corn and mushrooms that were cooked in this paper pouch - it was fresh and delicious as summer produce should be! I had the bluefish as an entree (to die for) and she had oxtail stuffed i n zucchini and she practically licked her plate - the desserts were scrumptious. The servious was warm and gracious, I felt more like I was at a good friends house rather than a restaurant and my server made excellent wine recommendations. I've rarely had that kind of service in nyc. I will definitely be back and will bring all my friends (especially those I want to impress w/ my find!_

Pros: food, warm & knowledgeable service, beautiful space

Cons: can't eat there every day!

I like the character of this place. Very warm and inviting unlike many restaurants with great food. Had the tart flambe and it was awsome to say the least- simple, flavorful, awsome. I will be going back.

I came to this restaurant on a busy Fri. night, and I would have understood if our waiter had not able to give us 100%, but he was unbelievably rude.
He first came to the table, poured water and barked at us "so, you want anything else to drink." We were shocked, but ordered a bottle of wine as we had planned. It only got worse. Another waiter poured our wine, without even doing a proper tasting. He then came back to the table and barked rudely at us "you want to order?" I snidely replied, "would you like us to order?" trying to let him know he was being obnoxious. He replied "What I should have said is do you want to eat?"
We should have walked out right that minute, because it only got worse and worse.
I told him that I was cold and could he please have some of the windows closed in the back. He replied "well it's either going to be smokey in here or the windows have to be open." I told him that his Mgr should do something because I and every woman in the tables next to us were shivering. One woman even was holding the candle on her table for warmth! They closed a few of the windows, but it was a cold night and all of us in the back were still freezing.
He returned, and I told him I was still cold. He replied "Well, do you want to move?" I said, yes, and he replied "Well the door is open in the front so you're going to be cold there as well." The manager came by shortly after, apologized and closed the rest of the windows, but I had finished my meal. I let the manager know we were unhappy we were with our waiter and he looked as if he didn't know what to do.
Our waiter came back to take our dessert order. We ordered 2 ports and a dessert and he then said "Well, do you want to get anything else because he (the manager) is going to give it you for free."
IT was the WORST service I have received in my entire life. I would not reccomend August to anyone as the management obviously does not have any control over their staff or hiring.

My friends had told me that I needed to eat here so my husband and I finally went on Friday night. It is a cozy place and the back garden smells of jasmine! To me the menu needed some explaining so I had many questions but our server was very knowledgeable. We started with the tart flambe which was one of the best appetizers I have ever had, and the steamed mussels with a ramp puree which was great! For dinner I had the trout and my husband had the veal, both were fantastic. It is a great place and the staff was very welcoming. I think we will become regulars here.

We took my sister in law who was visiting from Australia, thinking it was the ultimate brunch place in the city, but we were quite disappointed. The back room is really lovely, particularly on a sunny day like Sunday when we were there, but the service was the main let down. The waitress looked really tired and she kept forgetting things... I think she forgot to put our order through to the kitchen, as we waited for a while and about 35 minutes after she took our order, she suddenly looked at our table and run to the kitchen, which is when I think she realized she forgot to put it through... When the food came eventually, it was average. The egg dishes that my husband and his sister had were decent, but my burger was really quite bad. The fries were really greasy and overcooked, and the meat was disappointing.
Icing on the cake, I don't know if it is always like that, but the place was really really smoky, and we all smelled so smoky that rather than having a nice stroll in the village after our brunch as initially planned, we all went back home to have a shower and get changed!! I will not go back.

Although the brunch food was pretty decent.....the menu was a little limited and the wait staff was very rude and had the attention span of a mouse...overall I would look to go elsewhere for brunch if had the choice, being a seasoned New Yorker.

I came here with my boyfriend Saturday night and it was so romantic. I didn't know about the back room, so it's actually twice as big than I imagined or read about. Definitely try to get a seat in the back if only because it's concrete walls, with a green house ceiling. The food was excellent. I had the Irish stew and ate every bite. the service was fine. the place was very romantic. I usually order desserts whenever I visit a restaurant for a first time, but none looked that appealing on the menu. The best part was the person I was with.

I went here with a friend the day after Thanksgiving for the first time and had a marvelous meal and a very nice time. The appetizer tart is exceptional and not to be missed, although almost more like a small pizza than a tart. For the entree, I had braised ribs and they were very tasty indeed. My friend had the Irish stew and enjoyed that as well. The environment is warm and friendly as was the service. Although we didn't eat in the enclosed garden, it looks lovely back there. I will definitely go back. Great place for a date or the parents when visiting.

This is one of my village favorites. The food is exceptional. The wine list is great, and the service is fantastic. I only wish they took reservations!!!! Go early. The back patio is my favorite place. Inside can seem overly heated in the winter, and not cool enough in the summer. Other than those two things this is one of New Yorks finest places to eat. Casual.

My husband and I have been there a handful of times, and have always been satisfied and happy. Tonight we went took two friends there and ...the same. Ummmm....I know they change the menu often, but tonight the trout was incredible. It was a whole fish and barely stuffed with some sort of light cheese and finished with a brown butter and pomegranate sauce. I can't describe it but it was wonderful. To start we had a "pizza" with mushrooms and spaghetti squash. Again, can't describe but amazing. I LOVE August.

I came here with my husband's family, and had a terrific experience. The menu was small, but the food delicious. The night we went, they were out of a couple of the items on the menu, which is acceptable considering how fresh the ingredients are. I shared some wonderful appetizers and had a great matzo ball soup. The garden with glass skylight is lovely. Reservations can only be made for parties of six or more, so plan on waiting a bit if you have fewer people...

Like other reviewers, I had been wanting to try this place for quite some time. I went in on a Thurs. night as a party of 6, which meant a tip of 20% would be included in the bill. I eat out OFTEN and the servie here was the worst I have experienced in years. When we were able to find our waiter, he was surly and obnoxious. He clearly did not inform the busboys who ordered what because no one could figure out where the appetizers or entrees were supposed to go. I was accompanied by foodies, yet the waiter treated the few questions people had about the menu as if he was dealing with diners who had never eaten at a decent restaurant. I would never go back. Food was below average.

You look inside and it looks so great. An hour later, you're being forced out by the rude staff after a bland meal. The dishes sound fancy, but taste dull. For example, the cooked grapes were among several boring flavors sampled. The service was less polite than the low NYC standard. Save your money and your patience and go elsewhere.

this place is great! romantic, but not stuffy or cheesy. the food is not ridiculously expensive although the wine can quickly add up. the front dining room has a ceiling covered in cork. you then pass through the small kitchen & brickoven and arrive at the solarium/greenhouse dining area in the back. On a sunny winter day, brunch in the backroom is an amazing experience. I wanted to order everything on the menu and never wanted to leave. The food is the chef's interpretation of old world european food, i think... There is nothing like a real wood-burning brickoven to cook your food. They do not take reservation, but a 10 - 30 minute wait is totally worth it.

The ambience in this restaurant is tops in the city, for a cool, quaint off the beaten path SoHo restaurant. We sat in the back, which was a bit cold, this past weekend (12/3). The service was exceptional, wine list very Euro & very good. The food was aggressive in it's attempt at melding flavors, which I enjoy. I had grilled quail, sausage & grapes...sounds totally odd, but was very very good. My wife enjoyed the chicken. Portions were a bit small. Price was surprisingly a bit low, which is good. But this place is all about the atmosphere.....which is great for a date.

It's one of those west villagey places you pass on a Saturday afternoon and say "we've got to try that - it looks so inviting," and then you finally get around to it and encounter disappointment. The atmosphere is wonderful - warm, nice smells, good music - overall great ratings in this department. However, everything we ate was salted to an extreme, and the steak, so regrettably, was saturated with butter. Also, the french fries were $11 and nothing special. The warm burrata appetizer was also soaked in too much oil. The bean soup and the wine were the best parts of the meal.

Went for lunch on Saturday. Lunch selection was simple, yet interesting. Portuguese Chorizo Soup, although i didn't have it, looked quite good. I had the Burger with Pomme Frites with home made mayo, was quite satisfied. Have top shelf european beer selection. Wine list was also very good. Tight setting, reserve ahead or recommend lunch during prompt hours.

Arrived on a Tuesday night and had about a half hour wait. Bad news is the place is so small, you're constantly getting bumped and jostled by people as you wait in cramped quarters. If you don't mind the tables being so close together, this is a very romantic date spot. Service was knowledgeable, the wine recommendations were right on and the food was good. We'll definitely be back.

Not only was the food my group finally received not prepared to order (steaks were over done), I was treated very rudely by our waiter when I asked to make a minor substitution to accomodate my wheat and dairy allergies. As long as I've lived in Manhattan, I've never once had a problem with this type of request. If I hadn't had out of town guests with me and hadn't already waited an hour on a Tuesday night, I would have left the table without ordering. August is over priced for the quality of the food and not even worth trying considering the pompous wait staff and chef.

We went last night and the place was great. It's narrow, but that is typical for the area. The overall decor is nice and old world like. The hostess told us it would probably be a half hour but we were seated in ~15 minutes. Our waiter recommended an excellent bottle of wine at a great price. We had the tarte flambe appetizer, which HAS to be tried. It's a sweet onion puree on wood fired crispy flat bread. We have friends that don't eat onions, but come for this dish. I had the flap steak and my wife had the orata fish. Some people freak out about fish with the head still on, but the waitress offered to fillet it. My steak was very good and tasty. Overall, it's a cozy place with great food and a great social ambiance. We'll be back.

My husband has been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. We tried last night. When we got there, the host finally came out to tell us that the next table would be available in 45 minutes. I will take some responsibility here, because I did express my exasperation at their "No Reservation" policy using an impolite word. The Host came back at me with such a force of hostility, the content of which contained a roster of all the top restaurants that all the owners worked at. The man was scary and awful. Any seasoned employee who took the words "service industry" seriously could see plainly that I was suffering from exhaustion and low blood sugar; and should be treated as a patron who just needed a bit of patience. This man has no intention of winning us over, just getting rid of us, which he promptly did.

Cozy European atmosphere with views of wood burning ovens as we entered. Detail given to design inside as well as out in the lovely glass enclosed garden dining area, complete with cobblestone flooring and plants. We dined during the Sunday brunch and enjoyed it so much, returned for the evening meal. We were greeted and attended to immediately. Smooth lattes, smoky flavored bacon under the crème fraiche eggs, and oven toasted crunchy bread were heavenly. Our evening meal yielded some unique and delightful appetizers. Our lamb was the best I have ever eaten, and the sea bass was enhanced by artichokes. We split a Vahlrona chocolate pot de crème that was yummy. I was not too crazy about the vegetable with tripe. The salad with leeks had a mouth watering balsamic vinaigrette. The wine list is carefully paired to complete each selection, indicating quality, not quantity.

I have been to August several times over the last six months and I'm impressed by its consistency. The whole fish has always been very well prepared and there seems to be array of dishes that satisfy all moods. The food is not especially complex, but it is straightforward, delicious, and representative of its region. I like the wine list too which has a nice selection of fun and interesting wines at reasonable prices. In terms of the ambience, the attractive, rustic decor with good tunes gives it a nice West Village neighborhood feel

Went to dinner at August with a large party, and we were all astounded by how savory the food was. All the fish dishes are a success - well cooked, integrity of the fish preserved and enhanced by simple yet tasty sauces. The hits of the night: the octopus, the gnocci, the skate, the orata. The miss was the bouillabaisse. The room has a rustic look (wooden tables, concrete floors, the fire oven for the pizza), which makes the place cozy and perfect for romantic dinners.

Of course we went there with a large party and had to wait a bit to get seated (even with reservations), but we had all our dishes served at the same time and promptly.

I recently dined in back, the steak was excellent, the service was attentive and helpful, the wine selection was very good and overall i loved this place! This is a place that i would go out of my way to visit even if i had to. The atmosphere is cozy and warm rather than trendy and the food is well executed.

Finally a restaurant of wonderful, honest food and delicious wine delivered by knowledgeable staff with (thankfully) none of the pretense. For 5-6 dinners, and a few brunches, each time Ive been to August the food and service has been intimate and superb. Sure, sometimes its busy and loud given their successes (Zagat, NYT, NY Mag, et al) its not surprising. Appetizers of note are the tart flambe, grilled octopus and the blistered peppers. Entree must haves: carbonnade flamande, grilled rabbit and the almost sexual bouillabaisse. As expected, the wine list is as thoughtful as the menu the staff has earned my trust with their bullet-proof recommendations I have yet to be disappointed from their exhaustive list. Panna cotta, profiteroles and the cheese plate are the desserts for me. Go for brunch and have the Alsatian-style wood-oven baked eggs and a wonderful latte bowl.

We randomly happened upon August last night - what a find! True, its a bit "cozy" but we were seated in the wonderful back patio area where the space is a little bigger. Our server was wonderful - very familiar with the menu and wine list and able to make excellent recommendations based on what we said we wanted and our price range on wine. We had both the gnocchi and onion tart appetizers and both were absolutely wonderful. Such unique flavors that were paired wonderfully with the suggested wine. The pork entree was succulent, rich and delicious and we finished off with the profiteroles. I was so full I actually, sinfully, left a morsel of my scrumptious profiterole dessert on my plate but I'll be back again and wont eat all day to be sure I can enjoy it to its fullest!! Highly recommended.

I just finished dinner & have never felt so compelled to write. We had a nice dinner, but within 5 mins of finishing the host came & said he needed the table asked us to finish our drinks @ the bar. We were seated promptly & there were a few people waiting in the bar, but had ordered quickly & been at the table less than 45 mins. When we sat down, the couple to our right were halfway through their entrees - but hadnt paid their bill bc they were enjoying each other's company. The waiter and busboy apologized for the host who claims to have done this many times in his "13 years in the biz." While we enjoyed August in the past we will, under no circumstances, return for a meal. Given the many of great area options, I would implore you to go elsewhere.

Pros: Food

Editorial from

August is a bustling little gem, with additional patio seating located just past the big wood-burning oven from which much of the menu's Franco-Mediterranean food is prepared. Blessedly, the ceiling is lined with cork, which cuts down…
