I love the fish skewers. Great wine and when you can get the outdoor seating it's very nice.

Been here a few times. Love the live music! Yes they get VERY busy and service isn't always the best, but the atmosphere and food make up for it.

Another best of the neighborhood. Burgers are great. Minute steak is great. Mussels are great. Lamb Merguez sausage appetizer is awesome. Spicy seafood black linguine is awesome. Good atmosphere and good live music several times a week. If you are in this hood and debating where to go, stop, and go to Bar Tabac.

This is one of my favorite reliable bistros. Everything is uniformly tasty. The only reason why it didn't get 4 stars is the bread is too hard from too much rising. For the price and quality this place is underappreciated.

Pros: Uniformly good; good vibe; unpretentious; great value

Cons: Loud cramped space; spotty service; rubbery over risen bread

They show the soccer, which I appeciate but the food's pretty blah, brunch options are very limited and unimpressive. my french onion soup was very uninspired (really people its not difficult) my mother lives in france so likes going here when she visits so she can chat to the french staff - but i grew tired of it rather quickly due to the food. Again, the space and vibe are pleasant, there's a fun band on the weekend.

i've been going here for years, even before i moved to nyc, just visiting friends. staff is almost always friendly, though when they get really busy (think brunch) service & quality of food suffer. For a spot like this, on Smith st., its just plain fun! My Faves - goat cheese & beet salad, french onion soup, scallop & mushroom brochettes.

my brother really likes this place but there are so many better restaurants steps away i cant see going here. their food was ok at best, a fun atmosphere and probably better for a late night snack and a beer than dinner.

We enjoy the food and the vibe of the place. We like sitting outside on nice nights. And yes, the service isn't fantastic by any means and the place is overpriced for what it is/the quality of the food but generally we like Bar Tabac. BUT the manager is arrogant, rude and not very good at his job. He behaves as if he's doing you a favor, is rarely polite and has been downright RUDE with no provocation. It's unfortunate that the owners of what is generally a fun place decided to hire such an incompetent manager.

Great location, authentic European feel to it, nice patio seating, but the food was not really memorable. It was overpriced, so were the drinks. The waitress was a ghost most of the time. The place filled up with people by eight o'clock and it took forever to get a check. Might as well be cash only because they only take American Express.

Comfy French restaurant with live music even on a Mon. night. The outdoor dining was great and it was a relaxing atmosphere. The waitress was on point and very attentive. Very positive experience. Would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a restaurant in the Cobble Hill area. I bet it would be a great brunch place too!

I have never taken the time to write a review for a restaurant...until now. We went to Bar Tabac for dinner on Saturday night. We had an 8:30 reservation. We arrived right on time at 8:30 and waited for a few minutes before anyone even acknowledged our party of four. Then, after a man finally greeted us quite coldly, I explained we had a reservation. He didn't even speak to me and in a very annoyed way, grabbed their reservations book, quickly flipped through it while shaking his head back and forth. He turned to our group and said with not an ounce of apology "We have nothing right now. It will be 15-20 minutes." And then strode past us toward the back of the restaurant. He would not even stop as I tried to ask him if there was a problem with our reservation or a mistake on their end. We were so shocked to be treated so rudely with no acknowledgement of our reservation at all. No apology. We should have walked right out the door, but since every place was bound to be crowded on Smith, we decided to stay. We then ordered 4 pints of Palm Ale from the bar, but that was only after trying to order Stella Artois, which they were out of. The bartender says, "that will be $32." And I said, "wait a minute, these 16 oz pints are $8 each?" And she said, "yeah sorry about that." Stellas are $6, and she recommended a replacement that is $2 more. Even overpriced hotel bars don't charge $8 for a beer. We were finally seated and were disappointed in the service. We had to ask twice for our bottle of wine. And to top it all off, the food has really decreased in quality. Not recommended. Try any of the other great places on Smith instead.

I've been to Bar Tabac for dinner, late night, and brunch many times. The service has always been somewhat disinterested, adequate at best. But the food has been good, nice atmosphere, reasonably priced, so always worth a go. In recent months I've noticed a downturn.

Today at brunch we had a terrible experience. The food was fine, and it came promptly. But the service was awful: Our server was a distracted young woman, we didn't receive any water after asking for it, we didn't receive any sugar for the coffee after asking for it and finally had to ask the table next to us to borrow theirs. We never received any attention from the server after the runner brought out the plates. Fine, fine, whatever...one subpar service at brunch is no big deal.

But then, the capper came when the waitress--whom we hadn't seen for a very long time--came over and asked if we would vacate the table because people were waiting. We'd been at the table for a total of 40 minutes, after waiting 15 minutes ourselves. Awfully damn fast for a server to ask us to leave, as we were finishing only our second cup of coffee, that we'd only even received because we insisted on it when she brought over the check.

I replied that we'd be happy to leave, because we'd received bad service and this put the appropriate end to the meal. I complained to the manager (maybe?) on the way out the door and he responded with a boldly snotty attitude. He said he had people waiting and we needed to leave. "Maybe next time you go someplace else," he said.

Yes, sir, we will. I'd recommend others do the same.

I agree with the downhill reviews. I also frequented this place often a for a few years. I went back after a long rest about two months ago and was very disappointed with my meal, I just let it slide thinking they were having a bad night. Yesterday I stopped in for an onion soup and a calamari salad and was so completely disgusted with my food that I paid the bill and left without even making a dent in the salad! It was so disgusting the calamari looked boiled, were huge like tires and while I was waiting (I had a table outside) the seafood delivery truck pulled up and started unloading boxes that contained Calamari from CHINA!!!! I was so grossed out at that point but when the salad arrived it was even worse. A crappy diner in the suburbs could serve a better salad! The lettuce was past freshness, the tomatoes were mealy and they threw some huge slices of onion on top, no love whatsoever! The onion soup was beyond gross, it was like dishwater with soggy onions and cheap swiss cheese that immediately turned into a rocky lump, what happened to the intensely flavored onion soup with depth of flavor topped with gruyere??? At least that's what I remember having here once upon a time.
What happened to this place? It's a real shame.

So, do not order the calamari the batter is worse than terrible-and I asked they are frozen from a bag with the batter. .
However the real problem here is that similar to Cubana cafe, (I beleive it is the same owner) the bill comes without the name of the restuarant on it. As we neede to expense the meal, we asked for a stamp or something on the bill to indicate where the money was spent. The owner who finally came (over from cubana cafe) to sort things out (none of the wait staff speaks english), was appaled at the request, extremely reluctant to help and acted as if it were crazy. We got into a long discussion /arguement over my request-Does he really not want to put a stamp on the reciept ? Why? What does this indicate? Does this have something to do with why they don't take credit cards?

I was extremely disappointed last time I went here. The manager/owner was brusque and rude both on arrival and when he asked us hurry up before our dinner and drinks were complete. While the place may be popular and gets crowded, pushing out people who have ordered a full dinner and drinks seems inhospitable. Next time I want to spend $100 on a french meal it won't be here. Food was ok but not memorable My mixed drink was low on gin and not exciting The only positive thing was the waitress who was chaming in spite of what appeared to be constant pressure/ harrasment on the part of the manager/owner.

It's amazing to read the two previous reviews, because my experience has been similar: I have had great night's in this place, but on dining there on a last week on a weekday night, I was greeted with a nod by the hostess which took off without talking and later claimed that she had meant that I can sit anywhere. That was followed by a similar service and she continued to walk away as she was answering questions down to the very last minute when we managed to cath her attention for the tab; I guess it must have been me and my fault for stopping there to dine.

i frequented this resturant often years ago. the food was always consistent and the sangria is great. but ive been noticing that as much as the food is decent (as well as the price) there is something to be said about the horrible and rude service as of late. obviously this is my personal opinion (hint to the guy below.. that giving a negative review about this place doesnt mean they are lame.. its a personal point of view). This place used to have a great vibe but ive stopped coming all together b/c the host needs to get over himself.

This place rocks, and please ignore the lame compaints about the service. The place is super busy, and the staff is just fine so long as you're not the kind of person who asks questions about whether the beef was fed tap water or bottled water in its youth, to substitute one lettuce for another, or mentally keeps track of which table ordered first so as know if you're being slighted by the kitchen.

It's a bistro, the food is divine, the vibe is great, and impeccable service is not the point. I'm not sure if they've really be asking the complainers not to come back, but hey--the demand outstrips the supply, so why not screen out the dbs for us all...

This restaurant had the worst service I have ever seen. The waitresses and manager are rude and don't know anything about the people skills needed to run a restaurant. I will never go there again. I went to the restaurant and found that the food was allright but the people giving you the food did not know what they were doing.

I work near this restaurant and thought that it would be a nice place to go to lunch with my mom. My mother and I went to lunch at this restaurant and dealt with the most rude waitress I've ever had. She was rude, made no attempt at conversation, made faces at me at my mother when we asked her for something and finally slammed our meals onto our table. She made it clear that she was not happy to serve us. I paid our bill, but obviously did not tip the waitress. What happened next is the strangest thing I've ever seen at the restaurant. A person who said he was the manager approached me and my mother on our way out of the restaurant. He asked me if there was a problem. I thought he was asking because he wanted to alleviate the situation or offer an apology. I said "yes, there was a problem. The service was very bad". I was shocked because he sneered and said "don't come back here again, do you understand". I argued with the manager and the other customers could hear me and him exchanging words. I asked the manager "I want to speak to the owner of this restaurant." To my surprise he claimed to be the owner. I reiterated to this person that I thought this restaurant had the most terrible service I had ever seen at a restaurant (by the way I am a person that dines out frequently and frequently tips quite well for good service). If you are considering going to this restaurant please do yourself a favor and go to one of the other many reputable, CIVILIZED and good restaurants in the area.

This place was outstanding! We went to brunch on a busy Sunday morning (first perfect day of the year). We were greeted by the the host/manager (guy who looks like Tyler Durden at the end of Fight Club) and requested a table outside. I introduced myself and told him I just moved to the neighborhood. He readily accepted my handshake and made sure we had the best service the entire time. While we were waiting for our food, he stopped by a few times to make small talk and jokes. He treated me like we were old buddies. I really think this guy just needs some attention and wants to feel like he's "cool". Now when I go back, he remembers me and takes great care of me.

My last trip to Bar Tabac has altered it badly forever. I had been going there for years and last week had a party of 12 there for brunch. A few days later, on a Monday, my brother-in-law and sister went there for breakfast, and asked for a quiet table because he had to dial into a conference call. The waitress seated them in the back. I joined them after they finished their meal. So my sister and I sat at a different table to talk while her husband was on the phone. Out of nowhere a man--who was either the manager or owner--came over and told us not to go around the restaurant "f---ing up" all his tables. I was stunned, flabbergasted. Not only had I never been spoken to like that, I wasn't doing anything except sitting there talking. There were three patrons in the place, tops, so it wasn't like it was full by any means. He then told me "this isn't a gas station, it's a restaurant" and again said, "don't f--- up all the tables."
I won't eat there again, and will dissuade as many others as possible. Treating people like that is unacceptable and the restaurant needs to know that.

I have been going to Bar Tabac for the last year and I am suprised to hear about all the disgruntled reviews. Contrary to the reveiws that I recently read, I find the service to be extremely courteous. The restaurant is constantly busy and anyone will notice how hard the waitstaff works to accomadate customers' requests. While waiting for a table, I have noticed customers complaining about the wait and I have also noticed it is those very same customers that refuse to relinquish a table after they have finished their meal, even when the front (area where people wait to be seated) is so full that the waitstaff have trouble servering the customers in the front. I have worked in the service industry in the past and I think these reveiws are unfair and representative of customers who have certain assumptions of their place in society in regards to waitstaff. Second, I love going to Bar Tabac because of the reasonable prices and great wine and cocktail selection. The food is great and the atmosphere, although a bit kitchy, is warm and inviting.

it's a shame that more customers don't really grasp the charm of this great place. the maddness of it all is what brings my friends and i back each week. No, we're not really ever sure what the hell is going to happen during our brunch, or evening out, but thats the best part! the waitstaff looks to be really enjoying themselves and their humor and liberallness with the regulars creates a real fun-for-all atmosphere. My favorite employee is the little girl that hops around like a bunny and always seems to be genuinly pleased to see my husband and i. (p.s. word to the wise, try the specal cocktails. after a couple of them, you'll be seeing every thing with rose colored glasses, ha!)

This retarded girl named Lizzy works there. She is sooooooooo cute y'all!!! The manager is funny and always treats us well with complimentory champagne. I wish more positive people would write reviews because for every person who has been, and left unhappy there are 299 that leave very satisfied, which is why the place is busy ALL the time. Lizzy is really cute. She will just run around into walls and cry like a baby for you any brunch. Unreal. If you are a good person, please go here. If not, there's a Chiles in New Jersy that would be glad to seat you.

My fiancee and son and his friends dined there and the food and service was simply divine. The waitress was extremely courteous, helpful with the menu items, and a real treasure. The atmosphere there is similar to little smoky bistros in Paris, with the exception of the purported 'keymaster' that apparently pesters most of the patrons. But, overall the overall experience was wonderfully delightful and we will go back the next time we're in NYC; but a heads up to the keymaster...you will be best served not to be at work when we arrive...it could get ugly for you...

Awful experience, the manager yelled at us because we had sent back a dish that was not properly described on the menu. His hands came very close to my face as he was screaming at me telling me that he did not need us. Instead of yelling back we decided to leave. That manager will drag this place in the toilet very soon, I have heard of other experiences similar to mine when I told other people about the rudeness of this restaurant. Will NEVER go again, the food is also very average.

My partner and I had brunch yesterday with another couple and our morning was ruined by the service, in particular, the manager. My pregnant friend ordered the waffles with "fresh fruit" and was served brown, soggy peaches and grapes with an alcoholic aftertaste. As a physician, I know that minimal exposure to alcohol has not been proven to be detrimental to a developing infant; however, once we brought it to the waitresses' attention, the manager got involved and kept insisting that it was "fresh fruit." About the alcohol taste, he said, "it IS in alcohol." He then persisted in waving his finger in my partner's face and telling us that he "didn't need" us. After a stunned second, we got up and proceeded around the corner to Jolie for a beautifully salvaged Saturday morning. In my 8 years in NYC, this has never happened and NEVER have I walked out of a restaurant. I can't believe this place is still in business. Come on, ambience and taste are one thing, but dining involves hospitality and courtesy. This was not dining, it was an awful exercise in patience on our part.

There are far too many bars and restaurants on Smith St. to put up with the rudeness. They borderline bullied us into ordering quickly and threatened to give our table away - a little crazy considering we had just been served our drinks. As the previous review also experienced, they came back to the table twice after giving us the check to try to hurry us along. I think the number of reviews on this place complaining about the service says it all. You don't need to spend your money at a place that has little regard for their customers - particularly when the food is at best, average.

I've been frequenting Bar Tabac for years now and it has always been my fave restaurant to catch up with friends or bring out of town family or friends. The ambience is cozy and warm in the winter and lively and lovely outside in the summer. But I have to say, the past few times I've been there I have left disappointed and this past time I left just plain angry. I went there on Friday with a good friend and upon being seated we ordered a bottle of wine. As soon as the server brought our wine she was hovering to take our order and came over 3 times before we even had a chance to look at the menu. I also should add that Tabac used to be incredibly affordable but they have raised their prices significantly.
So, we finally ordered, both getting the hanger steak (which is usually delicious!) and within 2 minutes our food had arrived. My friend said that the food was probably already cooked and under heat lamps in the back and to quite honest, it tasted that way. The most disappointing part of the evening came as soon as our plates were cleared. We still had a half bottle of wine left and had struck up a conversation with the table next to us and we were having a lovely time when the server came over and asked if we would mind moving to the bar because she needed the table. We had already been rushed through our meal but to kick us out of our table after we had spent a signicant amount of $$ and before we had finished our meal is unacceptable. We said, 'in a few minutes' and not 2 minutes later the manager came over and told us to move to the bar where we would be compensated with a glass of champagne. We did not want champagne! We already had plenty of wine! Obviously, the servers nor the manager have ever been to France because a true French bistro encourages you to sit, dine and converse to your hearts content! Unforuntaely, I will not return for quite awhile which makes me sad as Tabac used to be my favorite 'go-to' restaurant in all of Brooklyn, if not NY!

If you're looking for a lively atmosphere and good food, this is the place to go. Can get a bit noisy and crowded, but to me, that's what a french style bistro should be. Check out the free jazz.

I was surprised to see a lot of negative comments. I've been to this place twice for lunch, both times during the week and had a very pleasant time. Yes the service was slow and not super friendly was they were not rude either. Maybe because it was not as crowded. The attitude and service is very French though, not what us New Yorkers are used to. So just lower your expectations and go enjoy great food and a very nice wine selection. Totally recommend their oyster special.

I went to Bar Tabac for brunch with a friend today and and we stood at the entrance discussing with each other whether we would rather sit inside or outside. There were a couple of tables free outside and many free inside, and the place generally didn't seem as busy as it sometimes does.

The host approached us, and before we had a chance to say anything to him he reprimanded us for talking to each other instead of him, and he started walking away, saying that he was "the keymaster" and if we wanted a table we had to talk to him not each other. This interaction literally lasted less than a few seconds, we really didn't have a chance to address him before he became rude and walked away.

We turned right around and left and had a pleasant brunch at the newish Italian place further south on Smith whose name escapes me right now. I live nearby and usually go to Bar Tabac once every 3 or 4 weeks, but after today I doubt I will be going back.

After being seated outside by the host, a waitress came over and yelled at us for taking a table that belonged to people waiting at the bar. then after standing up we were left there for 10 minutes while the host and waitress chatted 10 feet away. after decided to leave, they were overheard saying "oh look now they're leaving" and giggling. it's a shame the food is ok, because i'll never go back

Went with a group of 5 and had an amazing time. The food was sublime and the service was attentive and informed. The waiter knew his menu and what to recommend. The tab wasn't bad either for what we got -- wine, appetizers, entrees and a few shared desserts (plus tip) came out to about $50 each. Highly, highly recommended. Well worth a trip from Manhattan.

I have only been here a few times and it wasn't till the last that we discovered the ridiculous service that I just read about in 5 other reviews.

We ordered essentially at the same time the couple next to us did yet we got our food after they were literally finishing their meal.. so there was about a 15 minute time difference. At one point I looked at the waiter and shrugged. I think he was just used to it..didn't seem surprised.

My gf ordered a diet coke when we were starting to finally eat and got it as our bill came. The jazz is great. I suggest sitting up front I don't think they forget you up there as easily.

This review is not designed to criticize the food, which was in fact quite good. I recently ate Brunch there and was dismayed and dissapointed by the service. After we finished eating ourentrees, we asked the waiter to order cappucinos. He responded with, "I must ask my manger" The restaurant was indeed busy and full, but this was a reaction I had never heard in years of avid brunch-dining and working in various restaurants. We summoned the manager, quite a rarity for both me and my companion. The manager responded without an ounce of empathy or regret, but rather frank rudeness and an explanation that he found absolutely nothing wrong with being the arbiter of approving or not allowing post-brunch coffee to be ordered. We also witnessed the waitstaff and manager react rudely to an adjacent table as they were awaiting one of the members of their party to arrive.

Despite a wonderful atmosphere with live jazz and delicious food the waitstaff and manager are rude and unpleasant - I will never return. I ate here this past weekend and after eating a delicious brunch with my cousin, requested an after-meal cappuccino. The waiter said "I'm not sure, I need to ask the manager because there are people waiting for your table." I then requested to speak with the manager who proceeded to defend (rudely) his waitstaff's statement and repeated the claim that there were people waiting for the table. He did not apologize or offer us our drinks and walked away. We were not slow to eat our meal and this response was totally unreasonable. I said to the manager, "If you do not have time to serve us a full meal then do not seat us!" Note: the parties to our left and right experienced similar problems.

I love this place. I have only had a few things on the menu, but only because they have been so good that I haven't felt the need to stray. The burger is tops, the mussles in dijonaise sauce are delicious, and the steak is grand. Not to mentin the fries! And I love that they have hoegaarden on tap. It's a lovely little place that can often get crowded, so I recommend going at an off hour.

Our night was fine until the bill came we realized that they had charged us for a more expensive bottle of wine. The manager came up to us, without asking to hear our side of the story, and argued with us. The expensive bottle is not located near what we ordered on the menu (and when we ordered my friend pointed out the bottle). (As an aside the bottles themselves were merely labled "cabernet" so we didn't realized we got the wrong bottle). Then the manager brought the waitress over and they both caused a loud scene, basically calling us liars.

As a former waitress, I know that misunderstanings happen but I have never seen such an unprofessional act. For me, there are plently of restaurants in NYC that are way more deserving of my time and money.

Food is good, but place is crowded & noisy. I've had HIDEOUS RUDE waiters. One kept trying to yank my plate out from under me when I was still eating and when I said "Erm, I was still eating those fries." He shoved the plate in my face and said "It's just crumbs, you're done." Another time, friend's parents were visiting and since she lived in the neighborhood, she wanted to go there. Waiter hit me THREE times in the head with either his elbow or the water bottle while leaning over the table and didn't apologize. He spilled half a bottle of water in my lap and just threw me a napkin - no apology. Took us an hour to get our check. Good food is not worth that nonsense.

My friend and I met up here the other night to catch-up over dinner. We both decided that a girls night out called for a hamburger and a nice glass of red wine. To our surprise/excitement we never expected to taste such a yummy hamburger. Not only was it juicy but the onion roll/bun was soft and extremely tasteful. In fact we were so motivated to finish our hamburger and tasty fries we passed on the crisp lettuce/salad that accompanies the meal. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a treat. There is also a seating outside (sidewalk) that helps add to the overall experience as well.

One of my favorite things to do is come here late with friends, order some bistro bites (merguez sausage especially good) and drinks and spend a few hours listening to live jazz (monday nights) and chilling. Why it took me almost a year to realize this fabulous place serves food until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays is a mystery...regrettably!

Not to mention, the bartenders are gorgeous - all of them. And they make a mean drink. And they have a great Scotch and cognac and French appertif selection if that's your thing.

Also a fabulous place for a date. And for steak!

A visit to Bar Tabac quickly transports to you to a small village in France. Yes, the waiters look like they would rather be elsewhwere and the service shows but you are getting a real French experience without spending all that money on airfare.
We went to Bar Tabac b/c a friend of a friend was playing some music there and it was amazing. The gypsy french jazz music can be found almost nowhere else!!
The food was ok and the wine decently priced. I wouldn't become a regular but it is worth a trip.

What a waste of a cool space. Even though it's one of the few places you can hang outside late night, I'd opt for sandwiches in the park. Possibly the worst service I've had ever. Waitress came by once at very beginning. She was really rude...brought 1 beer ten minutes after we ordered a couple beers. We asked three times (the resteurant was not busy) for water, then I just went to the bar. Bartender wouldn't give me water. She said they'll send someone. Went across to the store to get a bottle of water. Waitress left in the middle of shift. We looked around for about 10 minutes for someone to get us our check...which had 3 items that weren't ours on it. Three other tables were wondering around trying to get theri checks too. The place is awful
