I went to Spoonbread last nite with mom and grandma. I ordered the barbeque chicken with mac n cheese and collard greens. The chicken was just ok. The rest was made with no love at all!! The mac n chesse was served piping cold and the noodles were too mushy and overall lacked the right seasoning. The collard greens had way too much vinegar in them. My mom and grandma had the meatloaf and neither liked it at all. They said it was way too mushy and who ever heard of meatloaf without green peppers and onions??

Soul food should be prepared with love and care and the food we had last nite just wasn't. I won't be going back to Mamie's Spoonbread anytime soon.

OK.. let me first say, I partly feel as though I don't even have the basis to really write a review strictly on peach cobbler but I just gotta!

My husband and his brother visited this place (his brother swears by it.. my husband was saying it was just "ok"). He brings home some banana pudding which was good (except for the already "turned" bananas)... and he brings home a serving of peach cobbler.. Now, as soon as I opened up the plastic container I knew something was wrong.. It just didn't look or smell right.. just the overwhelming spicy smell that didn't blend well..

I decided to give it another try and it was so slimy that I had to run to get some milk to get the taste out of my mouth.

Ummm, I'm not from down South, but my Grandma Ruby (who I will always use as a basis for comparison with soul food places) is... and I make MUCH better cobbler than this...

It was inedible.

I've heard many people ranting and raving about Miss Mamie's soul food... Well my family and I rushed over to this location to enjoy the food. Well I guess the day we went the main chef must have taken a vacation leaving the bus boys to cook.because the string beans were not seasoned well and had no taste..

We've never had a bad meal here, love the bbq to the weekend brunch, the fresh squeezed lemonade, and the wonderful hospitality of the waiters and great prices makes it a pleasure to eat here.

Pros: food, prices, and service

My roomate and i just recently moved to the neighborhood and have been passing by this place many evenings...and finally we made it in and what a joy. The food is spectacular and the prices are very reasonable for the portions you get. You need to give the cornbread a try it is a MUST and dont go without trying the chicken....my roomie and i split all our food it was yummy.

Pros: Great Homeade Food at reasonable prices!!!

My husband and I ate at Miss Mamie's twice and both times felt we were racially discriminated against. The first time we one of the only tables in the restaurant, more people came in about 30 minutes after we ordered, and THEY were served food first. We are both from the South and could have made better "Southern" soul food than what they served us. The chicken was dry and the mac and cheese was mediocre. It was overpriced for the quality and quantity of food we were served. Our one time 8oz glass of sweet tea was $3---very overpriced. We will NOT be eating there again!

The food was fantastic and the service was friendly. The service was kinda slow and it took time for the food to come out because its made to order, but it was worth it. The staff was very friendly and even sweeter to my 2 yr old. Being kid friendly is extremely important to me and they were very understanding and made no fuss about the rantings and ravings of my toddler and he was able to rome around without any complaints. I noticed other families there as well with their young children and the staff was very accomadating. The friend I went with who is from the south approved of the food. Would highly recommend!! I would def go back!

Half iced tea, half lemonade, smothered chicken, mac n cheese, yams. And I'm spent. The food is what soul food is supposed to be, the place is comfortable and folks are kind. They may take a little longer to get to your table but this isn't McDonald's, ya know?

The fried chicken is amazing- which is my personal bar of how good any soulfood is! And then try some coconut cake which is light and soft and moist and actually really tastes like coconut! You may not think to try the fries- but they are the best spiced in NYC and not too salty, either. I love the collard greens, too. And the mac & cheese.
It's relaxed and homey and everyone there is super sweet! The decor is photographs of family- which are beautiful, surrounded by what feels like a real sit-in, souuthernnn kitchen! It's exactly where you want to be - enjoying great food with people you love and worrying about nothing! AND you can sit outside - in the evening it is beauitful, across from the park!

Being from the south (the deep south), I was excited to read all of the rave reviews about Mamie's spoonbread, and even more excited to go try out the "comfort" food. Well, I was horribly let down. I ordered the catfish, the candied yams, and macaroni...and the catfish was not good at all (in fact, I thought about asking if I could go back to the kitchen and cook it myself, seeing that I know I could have made it better), the candied yams weren't quite candied...the syrup was runney and not flavorful, and the macaroni was, to say the least, mediocre. Overall, I would not recommend wasting your time or your money...I assure you you're not missing out on anything special.

I went here and the service totally stunk...the waitress was slow and forgot our drinks about 3 times. The food is worth it if you like having fried, greasy food. The only dish I did enjoy was the side orders of sweet potatoes and collard greens.

We waited well over an hour for our food, without so much as some water or bread, and then the food arrived cold. And was some of the worst soul food I've ever had (and I've had a lot of it as I grew up in the South). The Mac and Cheese was worse than a school cafeteria, the fries and catfish were soggy, the fried chicken was dry, and the sweet tea was plain nasty (nor did they bother to refill our glassed even once). In short, bad food and some of the worst service I've ever had - even though it was not busy. A waste of time and money ($45 for two).

I love Spoonbread. The food is great. The staff is great. Sometimes the service is a little slow, but I don't mind because the ambience is cool and good things come to those who wait. And the food here is a good thing. I live in NJ where there are lots of good restaurants. But I'm in the city a lot and I always try to stop at Spoonbread.

The fried chicken is out of this world, the sweet tea is excellent, and the desserts are tasty tasty tasty. I've always had good service (friendly and quick), whether the restaurant was crowded or not. One of my favorites!

I've been here twice and I am so dissapointed with the service. "Regulars" get their food first, no matter how long you've been sitting there prior to their arrival. This happened on two different visits, and it's sad that this is how Mamie's run their operation. There are plenty of other soul food restaurants in the area, and I would suggest you visit those. Ignore this place, unless you want to wait an hour for your so-so fried chicken.

We Loved the sample portions available at the Black Fine Art Show and attributed the poor service there to crowds and poor space. Little did we know that this foreshadowed the exceptionally rude, service from one (male) waiter in the restaurant. We were not served bread or water until we left the table twice to request. Our appetizer arrived after the entree. without apology and a nasty comment when it was refused. This waiter had major "attitude" and the smothered chicken was too salty. And and this early on a Sunday evening when there were no crowds. All in all what a disappointment for native New Yorkers with southern (S.C.)roots

Although I love the food here, there is one waiter in particular who is horrible. We got there at 8pm and didnt get served untill 930. The waiter never came over to our table, screwed up the order and one of us got frozen mashed potatos. The food is good, when its hot, but the service is retarded slow!!!!

While I love the food at this place, I remember the service took a really long time the last two times I visited. It took the waiter over 30 minutes to get our food because the order was misplaced. Also, when I ordered for take-out on another incident, that took 30 minutes too! I don't know if it is because they are understaffed or too busy, but expect to wait a long time to eat here.

I've been living in Harlem for nearly a year, but I only made it to Miss Mamie's for the first time last week. I was expecting a lot, since the place is supposedly "legendary" and consistently wins awards.

Well, imagine my surprise at finding the service frigid and the food rather unextraordinary. The much-touted macaroni and cheese was less flavorful than a box of Kraft, and the fried chicken paled in comparison to KFC. The collard greens were fine, however, and I'll concede that the sweet potato pie was worth returning for. Unfortunately, I tried their "famous" peach cobbler several days later, and found it was on par with the macaroni.

One thing I will say about Miss Mamie's: this place is cheap. Entrees (with two sides) average about $12- a good value, even in Harlem. But is it really worth it for average food and downright rude service?

This is a place I can (and sometimes do) eat at several times a week. I love soul food and Miss Mamie's does it well. Some of the best Mac&Cheese in the city!!! The smothered chicken was excellent as well. We ordered delivery the other night and it was still an excellent experience which says a lot of for a good place! The staff is very friendly and relaxed as well!

This place rocks! The atmosphere is slightly divey but perfect. I got the sampler platter (pork/beef ribs, fried chicken, fried catfish or shrimp, plus 3 sides. I had Mac n cheese, stringbeans, and french fries). The beef ribs are amazing, pork ones are also good, fried catfish was delicious, fried chicken excellent, mac n cheese to die for, perfect french fries, and nothing-special green beans. For dessert, we had banana pudding, buttercream cake, and peach cobbler. The banana pudding was really good (but Ive had better), the buttercream cake was also really good (but it didnt excite me that much for some reason), and the peach cobbler was awful! Canned peaches (I know its not peach season), too much nutmeg, and a bad taste. Id definitely try another fruit cobbler there, but only during fruit season. Even with that bad dish, Id still come back here any day. Its excellent!

Cons: Getting There, Not super cheap

I had the sampler which included chicken, pork and beef ribs, catfish, and three sides($15.95). The cornbread was scrumptious! Getting this entree made me feel like I was doing a buffet...able to try several items. My mother-in-law in eastern North Carolina cooks the best soul food anywhere and my husband (her baby) found Miss Mamie's to be good. That means alot. Our waiter was very impassive and seemed to have the personality of a stinkbug, but we got over it. Another server was quite helpful.

I first went to Mamie's when my family visited from out of town. We were a large group, but the wait staff did an excellent job of accommodating us. The food was DELICIOUS and plentiful! Being from New Orleans, we know good food and this was it! Recently, my boyfriend and I went for a second visit and we were just as pleased. Once again... I felt like I had cooked it myself (and I'm a pretty good cook!) except that I didn't have to do the dishes! :o)

From the best fried chicken in town, juicy and crisp, seasoned just right, to the short ribs of beef, falling off the bone with fresh cooked collard greens and the best marinated potato salad.......ummmmmmmm good. Do not pass it up, go by for early dinner 7 days a week.
