Philippe, a contemporary Chinese restaurant that is located in Midtown East. This 240- seat, 2 story restaurant is open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Philippe draws upon his classical culinary training, putting his own spin on traditional Chinese cuisine with results that are modern, flavorful and theatrical. The atmosphere at the restaurant is minimalist and stylish, with a devoted nightly following that makes up a virtual "who's who" of the music, media and film industries. The menu offers a selction of main dishes intended for sharing, sush as nine seasons prawns, drunken sea bass served in white wine, and peking duck. In Short
Owner Phillipe Chow honed his skills at the famed Mr. Chow before striking out on his own. At his new digs, patrons share satays and spring rolls on leather couches in the lounge, while more upscale consumption occurs at white cloth-covered tables in four distinct dining rooms. Entrees like drunken sea bass and velvet chicken are designed for two or three people, as are the prawns, served in pink, black, white and green renditions.

Key Points

  • Upscale Chinese
  • Creative Noodles & Dumplings
  • Private Parties

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Philippe offers a three-course prix fixe lunch for $20.06 Monday through Saturday from noon to 4pm.
  2. The Extras - Visit the owner's old stomping grounds, Mr. Chow.
  3. Where to Sit - The private room upstairs seats up to 35 people.
  4. Know Before You Go - Pastry and noodle Chef Wai Ming Cheng does a live noodle-making demonstration every evening at 8pm.

Chic Upper East Side Chinese Eatery

by Fanny K. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 290

This place is extraordinary! The service is impeccable, the Lychee Martini's are sensational and the food is out of this world. So are the prices. Don't expect a reasonable Chinese meal in this chic location but if price is no object, the food is perfect. The lettuce wraps, green shrimp, green noodles and lobster rolls were wonderful and everyone at our table (and the tables nearby) raved about each and every entree. Quite a dining experience, not for every day, but if you can afford a splurge now and then, this is the place to dine. Highly recommended.

No Complaints - loved it

by abraz

I had the crispy beef, prawns, lettuce wraps, veggie dumplings, sea bass (best I have ever had, period), red velvet cake, sorbets (no sugar added) -- drank two Phillipini's (delicious)! Prices are not cheap, but for the extra few bucks it is worth it - in fact, for the scene alone it is worth it - get ready for some serious people-watching - most of all though, the staff was very genuine and welcoming (didn't expect that) . I will be thinking about last night's dinner for a long time - very memorable - we even got to meet Chef Phillipe Chow himself - he made the rounds and greeted the guests...

Pros: food, scene, staff

Delicious and chic

by chameleon79

This is a great spot, and the food was amazing. A few friends and I ate dinner here a few nights ago, and were highly impressed. The signature drinks were very good. We started with the house salad, which was super fresh and had an amazing vinagrette dressing. I also tried the wonton soup, and was plesantly surprised at how such a simple dish could be so delicious! I have never had a better soup anywhere! They serve the main dishes family style, so my friends and I were able to taste a number of things. My personal favorites where the sea bass, chicken jo lau, and the filet... amazing. Our waiter was so sweet and very attentive to everything... explaining the menu and the dishes perfectly. Overall, we were all very happy, and will definitely be returning soon.

Pros: specialty cocktails, family style dishes to share, filet and sea bass!

Horrible food and service.

by AfterDarkNYC

Since I've always had a great time at the bar I thought it would be a good idea to have a full dinner. BAD mistake. The lobster sushi was a joke. It was tiny bits of dry rubbery lobster wrapped in thick donut like dough. Gross. And whatever else we ordered was sub par and uneventful. Stay away from the dinning room and stick to the bar scene.

Pros: bar scene

Cons: food and service

This place has gotten worse and worse !

by Kesuan10

Had a very disappointing meal at Philippe last night. Food was not fresh and service was poor. They didn't clean the table before we sat and there were stains on the table cloth and on the plates and utensils. Service was worse than ever. I won't be going back to this place and would not recommend it to my friends.

Pros: location

Cons: Food not fresh, dirty place, horrible service etc

Horrible !!! Stay away !!!

by MiKe3451

By the time you sit at table, you must be frustrated with this notorious manager because of his poor hosting and communication skill. Then you probably get mad since you don't get food any time soon. Besides, food is insanely overpriced. Lastly you should be infuriated when this rude waiter drops off your bill and tries to kick you out of the restaurant. Until you are all set, he is waiting right behind you to snatch your check. It is just amazing. If you don't wanna be treated like that, just stay away from the place !

Pros: none

Cons: everything

Awful: poor food, poor service, high prices

by tbrax

Philippe is simply appalling. The food was subpar: the crispy salmon wasn't crispy. It was, however, overcooked and covered in a sickly-sweet sauce. The velvet chicken, which our server assured us was very spicy, was so bland that we asked for hot sauce on the side to give it some flavor. The only good thing we ate was the chicken satay.

The service matched the food. Our waiter was pretentious and snooty but also inept. He (and the servers) put each and every dish in front of the wrong diner, both for appetizers and for the entree. One appetizer (the soup) didn't arrive at all until we asked where it was. It wasn't on the stove in the meantime, apparently, since it arrived cold. At the end of the meal we were presented with "warm" towels which were in fact quite cold.

Still, none of that was the worst aspect of the meal. This is: we had iced tea. The staff regularly took the glasses when they were halfway gone and refilled them without asking if we wanted refills. Then at the end of the meal we found that we had been charged for 7 iced teas. If a restaurant intends to charge for refills, it needs to ask before refilling the glasses. Simply appalling. Especially at $5 per glass. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Pros: Nice bathrooms

Cons: Bad food, bad service, high prices

This was well worth the money. The Chicken Satays are a must order and the half portions of the entrees are enough for 2. Everything was great, especially the service. I hope they open one in Atlanta! Oh, desserts and drinks are a must!

Cons: hostess was not so welcoming

AVOID IF POSSIBLE ! AN INSULT TO CHINESE FOOD LOVERS !

by jacky1977

This place overcharges and the food is overcooked ,places sugar in sauces which shouldn't have sugar in them, and misrepresents its spicy dishes as spicy when they were not.My guest and I complained about the portions which were shockingly small and our waiter gave us a condescending response which is unnecessary to repeat. Despite the interior design which is nice the dinner was an expensive EMBARRASSMENT !

highly impressed- amazing calamari and filet!

by mmw143

My friend -a "wannabe" foodie- recommended I go to Philippe after she had such a good experience there at her recent company corporate dinner. Honestly, I was a little hesitant to visit Philippe, considering the questionable reviews on this site. I decided to trust my friends opinion, because she does indeed have good taste, and I figured it was worth a try. I was amazed at how on point my friend was! We went on a Saturday night, and had a fantastic time. Our waiter was very polite, and was helpful with describing the delicious list of specialty cocktails. We had the salt and pepper calamari, as well as their famous chicken satay, to start. Both were uniquely delicious, and were nothing close to the bland copy-cats I had eaten at other restaurants. Our main course was the filet (melt in your mouth!), chicken jo lau (garlic sauce to die for), and the green prawns (amazingly fresh veggies and prawns). We all enjoyed everything, and tried desperately to finish it all, but of course we had to try dessert too. Once again, we were amazed at how delicious the items were. All I can say is that the entire experience was fantastic, and I too will be recommending Philippe to friends!

Pros: delicious cocktails and entrees- polite staff and management

Cons: music was a bit loud at times

VERY DISAPPOINTING !

by Mike1435

Seriously, i was surprised by all the great reviews, Actually, i had super high hopes in this restaurant and was more surprised by how disappointed i was! our waiter was really sweet but i felt really bad for the stupid uniforms he and the other servers were forced to wear! Our appetizers were ok at first until they brought the rest ... all of the textures in the dishes were identical... and gross. then for entree we had duck which was SUPER disappointing. Seriously, it's been like 20 years since I've had such a disgusting food.... . We were so unhappy with the food we got that we didn't even want any desserts. Furthermore, it was amazing to see how unhappy and sullen the kitchen staff appeared... and also how confused they all looked! I'd come back here only for squab ... but with all the other restaurants in nyc i haven't tried yet, that won't be anytime soon.

Pros: Squab

Cons: everything else

RUDE and UNFRIENDLY STAFF AND MANAGEMENT ! FOOD BARELY MAKES IT OK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Misha199

My experience at Philippe was horrible . I went there on a Saturday with a party of four and we swore never to set foot in that restaurant again. To begin with the service was slow and ungraceful. We asked for extra lettuce for our squab and the waiter rolled his eyes and looked like he wanted us out of there. We ordered the steak and it was raw in the middle. Shrimp was just ok but not worth the price. When we complained to the manager ... he was rude and unfriendly and could hardly be understood in his broken english. Fortunately the city offers many good Chinese restaurants so forget about this one. What a disaster!

Pros: location

Cons: Food, Decor, Ambiance.............. Staff including management -- Rude Rude Rude .... Attitude !!!!

HORRIBLE !!!

by anna19807

My boyfriend and I dined there last saturday night with much regret. The service was HORRIBLE!!! We waited for sometime for our waiter to even greet us at our table, not to mention never once checked on how we were doing throughout our meal. Our main course plate seemed as if it had come off of someone else's table, and the green shrimp was translucent as if it had not been cooked. The waiter also watched me pour my own wine, then later came back and picked up the empty bottle and attempted to pour the empty bottle of wine that he had just seen me pour out. We had better service from the busboy, who actually asked us how we were doing. The fastest thing that our pompous waiter did was bring us the check, peer over our shoulder to see his tip, and pick it up. I've had better service from a hotdog vendor.

Great food, trendy, service

by membersonly123

This was my second venture to Phillipe and I have to say it met my expectations once again. If you're looking for the full experience, I would recommend going later rather than earlier. Phillipe is very see and be seen and you will find that the crowd here is attractive, and well dressed. Don't be surprised when you're rubbing elbows with New York's elite. The food is great, I would personally recommend the Chicken Satay to start and either the Duck (although it takes 45 minutes to prepare) or the Sweet & Sour Chicken as the main course. The wine list is up to par with what you'd expect from a trendy UES eatery, the Riesling we had went great with the food. The service here is very attentive and there is usually a waiter & busboy tending to your table and a manager keeping a watchful eye. Overall it's a great place but not somewhere I could frequent too often as it is a bit pricey and a little too much of a "scene" place to go on a regular basis, but for a special occasion or a night out on the town it's a great restaurant.

Pros: Ambience, Service, Food, Atmosphere

Cons: No parking, sometimes hard to get a table where you want it, some dishes are subpar

Don't bother.... if you are after good food

by yellowriver

I went to Phillipe with high hopes as I was referred there by the Four Seasons Hotel. I asked for the best Chinese food in NY (as I never had any good Chinese in this city) and they sent me to Phillipe. I must say I was hugely disappointed.

First, the menu. The soup and starters section made me think I was in a cheap Chinatown restaurant catered for tourists on a tight budget. I had corn and crabmeat soup -- it was reasonable, just as one would expect for Campbell soup. We also had scallion pancake. The pancake turned out to be more like tortilla chip! I had better scallion pancakes in Chinese fast food restaurants. The pork lettuce wrap did not look good, but the taste was acceptable! I saw the girls next table ordering chicken satay and they were orange in colour!! The main course was more decent. We had chilean sea bass (half with black bean sauce and half with garlic), which turned out to be quite decent. The bok choy was also good. But the fried rice was a 2 out of 10.

The setting was meant to be upmarket, but the music was just so loud. It was neither here nor there.

I would definitely not go again!!

Pros: We had a very good waiter

Cons: bad food. loud music

Philippe Hands down a NEW FAVORITE!

by Whodoesthat47

I recently dined for the first time at Philippe last Sunday with my family. Came back again on Wednesday, then again on Saturday. Im hooked on it! The food is unlike Mr.Chow's, so much more better as far as crowd and ambiance. I'm a huge bilini drinker, and the speciality cocktail the Shanghai Philippe is to die for! Real strawberry puree and vueve, so good! The lobster Satay and Peking Chicken, two of the new dishes that the waiter suggested as great! Thats why I came back twice! Def. a place to be checked out!

Pros: Lobster Satay!!

Cons: Too far of a drive for me! Open downtown!!

Not sure why anyone would give Philippe's a bad review. Athough I do not know Mr. Chow personally and he seems to be low key he is hands on, he does make his presense known at his resturants making sure customers are happy and his phenominal staff is consistant.

I have had the pleasure to eat lunch and dinner 6 times at this establishment and always very satisfied with serivce, and food. You must try the leeche martinis out of this world.

Thank you Mr. Chow and your professional staff at the NYC location, I drive all the way from CT to eat at your resturant.

by flafood

I have been dining at Philippe since it opened about 3 years ago. I am in NYC on business 3 or 4 times a year and I visit Philippe every time. My other NY favorites are Babbo, A Voce, Union Square, Cookshop, The Modern, Red Cat, Daniel and Nobu. The food and service have been 1st class every single time. Only in NY can you eat incredible Chinese food in such a modern yet relaxed atmosphere. The tableside duck and the housemade noodles are 2 of my all time favorite dishes. On my last visit to NY, my guests mentioned to me that I should read the Citysearch reviews before making a reservation. I read all of the reviews and found them to be very entertaining. My first thought was that someone is taking personal shots at Philippe's ownership which I find to be sophomoric. I would also recommend to Citysearch before they allow a rude and distasteful review to be printed they should ask for a receipt, Zagat should do the same. I will continue to dine at Philippe every chance I get because not only have I been pleased everytime, my guests have been as well.

Pros: peking duck

Cons: none

Perfect Senses ~!

by bijouli26

Between the food, the music, the ambiance, the specialty drinks and the beautiful people I have yet to find a restaurant that satisfies all the senses as much as Philippe does. I highly recommend the Spicy Prawns (my absolute favorite dish) the filet mignon, the chilean sea bass and crab cakes when in season. You can't miss... the noodles (flat noodles) in the bean sauce are also delicious. Desserts are a must! I have been seated in the main dining room and upstairs (facing 60th Street) ... each room has its' unique feeling ~ I would highly recommend returning and asking for a different area ~ just for a different dining experience. Can't wait to return.

I was a 2 time per week regular at Mr. Chow for almost 18 years. After trying Phillipe, I was hooked. The service is top rate, the waiters are exceptionally friendly, the restaurant is spacious, the scene is fantastic and the food is amazing! My only mistake is introducing all my friends to Phillipe...Now, whenever I am there to enjoy a meal with my wife and children, we tend to know more than half the restaurant's patrons.
All the negative reviews are either by Mr. Chow friends or critics who want free handouts!
It is no wonder why the restaurant is always packed and has many repeat customers...like myself!

Ignore Citysearch, Philippe is worth the wait

by Cat489

Had dinner the other night at Philippe. MUST SAY A NEW FAVORITE! Reservation was for 9pm but our table wasn't ready for our incomplete party. The place was extremely busy because large parties. Pleasant to see Larry King by the bar. My friends and I were recommended to try their specialty drinks. We had a Midnight Mojito with blueberry vodka. AMAZING!!! We were seated shortly after in the wine cellar. Gorgeous hidden room in the space. We walked through the kitchen and were taken into this alcove. The room is also known as the restaurant's Cigar Lounge. There aren't too many spaces in Manhattan this unique! We decided on sharing the Chef's tasting Menu. Waiter brought out a ton of food that we all shared. again AMAZING! It's surprising to hear that a few customers complain on these website, perhaps they have too much time on their hands? or perhaps they should shell out a few more bucks to get a personal chef and stay in?

Pros: Drinks & Food!!

Cons: The wait, but well worth it

WORST RESTAURANT IN MANHATTAN

by matt333

I never write reviews, but something has to be said about this abomination of a restaurant. The food is absolutely horrendous and the service is equally as bad. My wife and I were first escorted to sit in the "cellar room". This was a little dungeoun in the kitchen that allows smoking. I am tempted to call the board of health because smoking cannot possibly be allowed in a restaurant - can it??? After we complained about the smoke, we were given a table in the main dining area. The waiter was pleasant enough. He recommended the chicken satai and the cheng noodles. These were the worst two appetizers I have ever eaten. For the main course, we had overfried beef (again horrendous) and sweet and sour halibut (terrible as well). The food made us long for the $7.99 dishes at noodles 28 which are 10 times cheaper and 10 times as good. DO NOT VISIT THIS RESTAURANT. IT IS TERRIBLE.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

by nicoli5

On a recent night out we decided to dine with a long time friend at Philippe. We have been dining on Philippe Chows food for years at Mr. Chow and always had a wonderful experience. When we arrived we were whisked off to our table. A comfortable banquet situated nicely in the room. We started with a few appetizers followed by Pink Shrimp and Peking Duck. All was good, even though the service was less then adequate. We finished off our meal with some desert and a $700. check before heading up 5th Ave to walk home. Thats when it all started not one but all three dinner guests of Philippe were in agony. Yes, food p----ing! I was ill for three days having to cancel a trip overseas. When the management was notified they simply stated NO ONE gets food p----ing from Philippe. What a crock! This happened a few months back and Philippe had my review deleted along with several others who complained of having similar reactions to the food. I urge you either continuing going to Mr. Chow or if you feel adventurous Buddakan is delightful!

RUDE WAITSTAFF!

by kmerre

Food was great as always. Very dissapointed with rude waitstaff. Stood at front being ignored for several minutes. Maybe I would have been better off just going to Mr. Chow? Service is much better there!

Not Good at all -- Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere !!!

by mcarnegie

Average chinese food in a lacquer setting. RIDICULOUS!!!
Is is still the 80's, then head to this pathetic restaurant,
The food is better and more authentic at 1st Wok.
Avoid the poor service and obnoxious attitude.
There are many better places to eat, AVOID!

Pros: Peking Duck

Cons: Everything else

What a joke - Someone please tell these puffed up freaks that they are eating bad food!

by diner9ner

This place is a joke. We were seated 30 min. after reservation time. The service was bad and with attitude, the drinks were wrong, and the food was so bland that it tasted like frozen Asian food from the grocery store. We were jammed up next to tables on either side and each table seemed to yell louder than the other and say the "f" word more than the other in some sort of competition or tennis match with words. What a freak show! This is really everything that is wrong with the "scenes" in NY and LA. This place being the place "to go" is really the equivalent of Britney Spears thinking she is "classy". FOOD TO AVOID: Kung Pao chicken, shrimp spring rolls, beef satay - yuck!

Pros: The hostess was polite.

Cons: Everything else. Really.
