We, a group of five, ordered take out on a Friday evening just before 9pm. Despite repeated calls, the delivery did not arrive until 10:45. We opened the food to discover that we had been given the wrong order - one greek salad, a few pieces of pita, and some dipping sauces. When we called to report the erroneous order, Gary the manager said he found it "very hard to believe" that we had received the wrong order. He was not apologetic in the least, and went on to say that if we would pack up the food again, he would send his delivery guy over to pick it up from us to deliver it to the rightful recipient who had ordered it. He offered to do the same for us before we told him that was highly unsanitary to take food that would have been out for the better part of an hour with a stranger and deliver it when they had made the mistake in the first place. I will never eat here again having had some insight as to their reprehensibly low standards on both customer service and basic sanitation.

The waiters were very attentive, charming and sweet. I went in there for an early dinner wearing a t-shirt and shorts and I didn't receive any of that snobbishness that other reviewers complained about. The mushroom youvetsi was delicious and only $11 - plenty of food unless you feel the need to be overstuffed. Try one of these 'small dishes' if you're looking to save some money. The Greek coffee was delicious - I had never had it before, it is the richness of good cocoa. yum.. Oh! and the Greek yogurt on a semolina cake with blueberry compote was lovely for desert. I would definitely go back.

Pros: Nice waitstaff, tasty food, cute and candlelit ambience in the evening.

Cons: Prices for the larger dishes are low to mid $20's - not terrible, but not cheap either.

I've been to Snack Taverna countless times for lunch and a couple times for dinner and have consistently had wonderful food, including well-spiced, well-cooked lamb dishes and sandwiches. Am most impressed by how fresh everything seems; good ingredients make a huge difference for me. I especially recommend the beet and watercress salad. Lunch is probably more reasonable than dinner, but I think the portions are ample and I've never left hungry (but maybe that's because I'm addicted to their amazing rice pudding). I make a point of bringing out of town friends here for a guaranteed delicious, healthy, and not-too-pricey meal.

And I've always found the service to be fine; sometimes very friendly, often neutral, but no bad attitudes have ever ruined a meal.

Okay food, but snide, nasty service. We were two and shoved off into a tight corner in back with a clear view of the kitchen and people going back and forth to the bathroom, while four larger tables up front were empty. Later on, two other sets of two entered the restaurant, young hetero couples, and they got the larger tables. The other two larger, more centrally located tables were left empty, I suppose in case some other special couples came along. So go if you fit their preferred user profile, but avoid it like the plague if you don't. The prices are high for what you get, so why pay good restaurant prices to get dissed? The other reviewers who complain about Snack Taverna's 'tude are so right.

So, we went to Snack Taverna to try again (for the last time) - i had to convince my husband to give it another go as he had previously thought it was terrible & yes this would be the last time we would go to snack taverna.
Greeted by a rude waiter we sat in the back corner & felt very cramped & could hardly hear each other.
We ordered the lamb triangle special & I had the pork. The lamb triangle tasted like it has been reheated & the pork was undercooked & tasted very bland & sweet.. Not what i expected. When we looked through the wine list, we were given the spiel about the wine list being all greek & as if we would know anything about iwne attitude.
I really did not enjoy this restaurant & would NEVER go back - having given it a few tries, i do think I have given it a good chance but was bitterly disappointed.

I gave it one star for location.

I don't know why this place has such a high rating. The food was okay (nothing special). It was too tiny, I was stuck up against the counter. We had a bottle of wine (which was tasty), but it wasn't even served in a wine glass. It was served in a small water/drinking glass (ick..tastless in my opinion). Don't spend your $$ here.

Met 2 friends for dinner on a Tues. night at 7pm (no reservation). As expected, place was empty but when I mentioned I was waiting for 2 friends, I was offered the bar to wait. However, bartender quickly realized how ridiculous that sounded and sat me at my choice of table. Wines are all Greek and the glossary on the menu helps you navigate. The apps were tasty and decent sized (non-traditional style mousaka was delicious) mains were more than sufficient size wise and fine in taste for the prices ($18-low 20's). No one had dessert as we were too full but the assortment was varied. It's a nice place to meet friends and sample the many different small plates. Would return if in the 'hood. FYI: By 9:30, the place was packed.

Every time I walk by this place I wonder why they're so busy. I think it must have something to do with their location near 7th ave. Apparently passerbys on their way toward Soho spot it and think it looks pretty. Sadly, pretty is about all it is.

Lamb, which is a staple in Greek cooking, should be a featured item. Of the three lamb dishes I've tried here, all were dry and lacking in flavor. The kitchen shows an almost total lack of imagination when it comes to both presentation and taste. Bland food is just dumped on your plate. And even if you're craving a dessert at the end of your meal to wash down the banality, don't bother. You'll be sorely disappointed if you do.

Ok so not everything is awful. The greek coffee and the wine are decent.

I went to Taverna on a Saturday night and while the atmosphere was cozy, I believe the food is more or less typically ok and definetely overpriced.

We ordered a Greek salad (which was flavorful and large), the saganaki, and the skordalia. The saganaki was very oily because it had been deep fried but not drained well and the skordalia was completely different than what we expected--a puree of potato with a very pungent, almost spicy garlic flavor.

My boyfriend ordered the lamb boureki, which came with sauteed red potatoes and onions. The boureki was soft and flavorful, as the lamb had been ground into smaller bits.
I ordered the lamb souvlaki but was upset because the lamb was tough AND there was so much filling inside of the pita bread that rendered the souvlaki very heavy and slightly soggy to eat.

I would probably stick to a much cheaper Greek restaurant next time for the same or better quality of food!

Excellent!! Like a few before me after reading the reviews online I wasn't sure I wanted to try Snack Taverna when my friends suggested it for a get together. Upon entering we were greeted by what seemed like the whole (very friendly) staff and promptly seated. After one piece of pita smeared with a delicious smoked eggplant dip I was hooked. The service was impecable even though the quarters are a little tight. We wanted for nothing. The lamb stifado was delicious as were the rest of our appetizers. For the main meal we shared a variety of dishes including the cod, a scallop special and roast tenderloin of pork. The rice pudding with pine nuts for dessert was phenomenal. As for the previous review...what NYC resteraunt lets you bring in your own dessert without some sort of fee?? It's a greek eatery, enjoy Greek desserts!!!

Like most reviews stated, food is great. The basics are well done and presented. Taramosalata, one of the best. No problems getting more pita. Lamb sausage, although a bit dry, tasty with the sweet pear and rosemary compote. I agree with another reviewer that the dishes were sweet: they are.
The service: surprisingly below average - not from lack of knowledge, just unfriendly. Fake smiles are worse than not smiling. Is it a Greek thing?
I made a reservation for 4pp a day earlier. When we arrived, the host was ready to seat us in the nice table in the front window until the bartender said that a party of 5 just called. We were then sat at a 'lesser' table near the back- and asked to move again (poor planning). Situation understood, but dont let your patrons hear it! The $5p/p cutting fee for our self-brought cupcakes was absurd.

After almost a year of planning to get to Taverna, I finally made it the other night and my only regret is that I waited so long.
The restaurant has a lovely, romantic feel- candlelit and intimate and the service was knowledgable and attentive without being obtrusive, a quality many more expensive restaurants have not yet mastered.
But the real star of this show was the food. There are so many wonderful small plates to begin with. We loved the Beet salad, the Pikilia where we sampled the delicious dips, and the sausage w/ fennel was superb. The entrees continued to dazzle us. (Loved the short ribs-WOW!!!) Paired with a lovely bottle of Greek wine, the evening was a great success.
You can be sure I won't wait another year to return-

I had to farewell an intern today and wanted to take her to lunch - her choice of genre (my choice of location). I found Snack Taverna on CitySearch and decided to chance it. I am so glad I did. I enjoyed every moment of our afternoon! The service was OUTSTANDING - a little too maternal though (is that really all that bad?) and the food was amazing. If you like Greek, check this place out. I definatey will be returning if just for the starters alone!

Almost didn't go after reading previous reviews. Called to make a reservation and b/c the man who answered was so nice decided to chance it. The host was very friendly, the bartender even said "hello" as we passed by. Asked for wine recommendations and the waitress told me her favorites and described them in detail - I don't encounter this much in NYC. Ordered saganaki, small salad, entrees: scallops, horta boureki, tilapia - too stuffed for dessert. Food is not traditional Greek, more like Greek-Mediterranean, it was very tasty. I have only lived in NY 4 months but have been extremely disappointed in service and value almost everywhere - except here. Everyone was very professional and efficient. I felt like they were glad we chose their restaurant - not like we were lucky to be there as I feel at many other places.

I was excided to finally go to Snack Taverna since I had heard so many great things about it so I gathered some friends and went for a Greek Easter dinner. Upon arrival we were greeted by an obnoxious host who made us want to leave immediately... we stayed of course and hoped for a better dinner than the start. My Greek sister and I were soon disappointed again that the menu was a little more fancy and a little less taverna. We worked with what we had. When the food came - some was fine - salad. I make better tzaziki at home and I dont know what they were aiming with on the Mousaka... not even close. With the name snack taverna we had expected something that this was not and I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to get some great Greek food especially Greeks.

the reviewer from 4/25 was absolutely right! i don't know if there's been a change in staffing or what since i last went but the current host was repellent. i'll spare you the details since it sounds lots of reviewers have had the same experience.

this place was good when first opened but i won't be back. give me a break, you've got to get it together when it's new york and there are gazillions of other choices with better service. the food is ok but not worth the attitude.

the initial good reviews here about the place must have been before the current manager was hired. i would have walked out but my party wanted to give it a chance.
don't bother: mindnumbingly rude service makes it practically fraud that people pay to go there.

While originally won over by the food, I will not return to Snack Taverna because of the rudeness of the manager/maitre d on two recent occasions. On the first occasion, he kept us standing while the table was obviously ready, and only begrudgingly agreed to accomodate our unexpected 5th guest. In the second instance, he directed his attitude toward friends to whom I had recommended the restaurant, rudely dismissing their inquiry as to whether the restaurant served liquor. They were so put off by his attitude that they got up and left.

With many more friendly choices with great food in the West Village, I won't be returning to Snack Taverna.

After having enjoyed SNACK we were excited to try SNACK Taverna. We made reservations for a Saturday night and confirmed them (as the SNACK staff requested) with a slight change in time. Imagine our surprise then when we arrived on time with out of town guests and were told we had no table reserved because we hadn't called yet a third time to reconfirm! Eating out shouldn't take this much effort. When the manager finally found us a table, he acted like he was doing us a big favor. He and the entire staff had attitudes, the portions were miniscule, the prices overinflated, the placed was cramped, and the food not all that great. Unless you like a large portion of ATTITUDE with your mousakka, AVOID at all costs.

After arriving 5-10 minutes before our reservation, we were kept standing in this cramped place, even though there was an empty table. Another party of 3 arrived (late) and were given the last table. We were kept standing for another 40 minutes! Although the food (especially the roast chicken and skordalia) was memorable, the inexcusable wait was even more so. The prices were also inexcusable--$41 per person--without wine.

The Food is AMAZING: skordalia, a mashed potato-garlic yummy goodness served with fresh, piping hot pita baked on site. Country sausage covered with pear-fennel compote, grilled to a crispy perfection. Cured beef, served thinly julienned with marinated cabbage on top of a butternut squash and dried fig on filo pastry. I cant describe how delicious this combination is.

Main dish: chicken served with chickpeas, golden raisins, sauteed with butter and spices incredibly fragrant and melding beautifully together. The chicken was boneless but not skinless, and was rubbed with garlic and other spices and baked until golden and crisp but not so that the meat underneath was drythe meat, even the white, was juicy and flavorful.

Gosh, oh gosh, it was so so so delicious! I was astonished at the quality of this restaurant. I will take all of my friends when they come to visit.

I've been to Snack and SoHo many times and I am never disappointed. My first excursion to this Snack was such a let down. I thought that everything tasted fine, some items were even great - but nothing was as good as the original Snack. This place just made us feel ripped-off. The appetizers were tremendously small, and they gave us one pita bread for four people even though we ordered four appetizers. Then, they charged us per extra pita that we requested. The main dishes were also very small, and all at the large price of $21-$25. Our waiter perpeutuated the feeling that all this place cares about is money. I think this place is trying too hard to be fancy, and they should stick to the old formula that works at the original Snack in SoHo.

I've been to Snack and SoHo many times and I am never disappointed. My first excursion to this Snack was such a let down. I thought that everything tasted fine, some items were even great - but nothing was as good as the original Snack. This place just made us feel ripped-off. Pros: Location, Ambiance

Cons: , Service

I thought the menu here would be not at all what I would desire, being Greek, but I was taken here on a blind date and was so amazingly surprised! Really, you should check this place out. It's amazing!!! Food is excellent, service is warm and accomidating, in the feeling in general is welcoming and casual. You should definitely try it; it's definitely worth it.

Snack Taverna instantly thrusts Greek cuisine to the forefront of the New York food scene. Inspired interpretations of Greek classics join innovative original recipes to make this menu an instant favorite. The sausage with pear spoon sweet is a must-try, and the seafood is some of the freshest and most deftly prepared I've had anywhere. Let the staff guide you through the pleasures of "The Greek Table" and introduce you to some surprisingly sophisticated Greek wines. A memorable culinary experience, this ain't your neighborhood gyro joint.

One of the more pleasing meals we've had in a while. Starting with Snack in Soho, these guys have walked on the quality side. Really fresh ingredients meet really fresh preparation here. Memorable mussels in a tomato sauce with goat cheese and ouzo...mmmmm. The service is attractive, warm and friendly. The decor is really tasteful and well thought out. Prices won't kill you.....Highly recommended!

what a makeover in that space. clean lines comfortable banquettes and great lighting! The food is not to be believed...fresh seafood, prepared as if a Greek with a world view was in the kitchen ( I hear he's a French Laundry alum) has clean well defined flavors. traditional dips are flavorful and were great to share. The warm friendly service was knowlegable and profesional but not overbearing a big help in navigating this menu! I'm coming back for lunch!

Never have I been delivered a meal that was still hot like it came right out of the kitchen! The omelette and toast here are delicious. I opted out of the hot chocolate this time because of the price, but I'm thinking next time it might be
