a side-street gem that exists to serve us in the neighborhood. The women who run it are too fabulous to be rude or newyorkish. One time in, you love the food, two times in, you will know the staff, who are obviously selected because they are sweet people, three times, and you are a regular and greeted by name. It is a family place, and the greatest. Both for the quality of the food, which the chef, Lea Forant obviously dotes over as a professional lifetime chef de cuisine, and the wonderful almost club like atmosphere created by Caroline Montgomery, her partner, this is what restaurants used to be like in NY in the 50's There was a time when only the rich were treated this way, here only the nice people are!

Pros: the best well made classics you will have in ny

Cons: no booze, but maybe

Cafe Forant is an adorable cafe with nice furniture and kind workers. THe employees are always busy with a new task and the atmosphere is very delightful.

This is a perfect off-the-beaten-track spot to relax and enjoy real homemade food, steps away from Times Square and away from the hustle & bustle. This is how I want to dine in midtown--REAL food, relaxed atmosphere. Whether you're a tourist or, like me, entertain a lot of visitors, you'll appreciate the "feel," like you're at a friend's home.
I love love love the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Delicious and more affordable than anything you'll find in NYC. I've also had beef stew (exquisite) and spinach with roasted garlic. Good cookies Too!
I'm usually disappointed when going to restaurants in Times Square, the crappy food, cranky crowds and servers who just want you to eat and get out. This is now my favorite stop-off place in the neighborhood, especially after walking around doing all the touristy things and feeling like you just want to sit down and eat some really good food without emptying your wallet.
Kid friendly too.

This restaurant is great. You get to choose one gourmet entree and two gourmet sides all for a great price. I thought the food was surprisingly good for the amount of money I paid. I've certainly paid double or triple for the same quality of food in Manhattan. I've been back a couple of times and I've enjoyed several different dishes. My favorites: sole piccata, meatloaf (better than Mom's), sweet potato puree, slow roasted tomatos, and grilled asparagus.

I like to take the food home with me, but on a nice Spring/Summer evening, eating at one of their outdoor tables is like eating at a Parisian cafe. It's nice to eat outside on a side street without the fumes of a major avenue to interupt your meal.

I must say that this is my favorite place in the neighborhood. The number one reason I go is the food-it's always fresh, healthy, and affordable. Atmosphere-wise it's just what I like: away from the bustle of Hell's Kitchen with relaxed but attentive service. My faves are brunch (7 days a week now I hear) and the apple tarte tatin (revolutionized the way I thought about desserts).
Go!

We got married last October, Carolyn and Lee of Cafe Forant were invaluable. They worked with us to create a fabulous experience - so unique and just right for us. Everyone raved about the food and drink, and I (the "bridezilla") was able to relax, knowing that our guests were going to be taken care of. I would (and do) highly recommend Cafe Forant for any catering event.

Excelllent variety of entrees and sides. Excllcelent fish, and good comfort foods, meatloaf, macaroni and cheeese and mashed potatoers. When available the mussels are supurb. Very warm and attentive atmosphere generated by Leah and Carolyn. Also serves modestly priced and delicous brunch on Sat. and Sunday including eggs benedict. Watty

Pros: Food always well prepared. Courtious service

Cons: Small space, limiteed seating. With small staff, can behard to meet deman, when busy.

After a busy day at work it is wonderful to have someone else prepare your dinner and let me tell you, Leah is that person. Several times a week I stop by to pick up my dinner and particularly LOVE the salmon with a combination of delicious vegetables. Food is ALWAYS fresh andLeah and Caroline are the perfect hosts for this gem of a Parisian cafe in the middle of Manhattan. Weather permitted the tables and chairs come out. Who needs Paris?
