I had an awesome relaxer and hair treatments by hair stylist Sofia, but I recently learned that she no longer works at Define Yourself. Does anyone know where she now works?

I got my hair highlighted and cut because I was getting pictures taken and needed it badly. I believe her name started with a Y. First of all, she didn't do my whole head, so if I put my hair half up, the underside of my hair is very dark. Second, she didn't put the foil all the way up to my scalp!!! I have at least 1/2-1cm of space between the highlight and my scalp in some very noticeable areas on my head. Like the side of my face, and if my bangs are moved slightly, it looks like a zebra. It is very spotty and almost like she wiped the color across the hairs that were not protected from the foil. Aside from the terrible highlight job, she did cut my hair very well, and she was a very nice woman, but could not do a highlight correctly. Thank goodness I was able to cover it up for my pictures. This place is moderately priced, but I did not receive the results I had hoped for. The atmosphere of the salon however, was very welcoming. I was a walk-in and they accepted me without hesitation. I would go there again, but not for a highlight.

After going to the same hair stylist for 6 years, I was very nervous to change. I recently got a new job in NYC (used to work on Long Island) and had to change all of my appointments to fit my new schedule. After reading all of the reviews, DYS sounded the best. I called the morning I needed an appointment and got right in for later that afternoon. I got a full-head foil (highs and lows), a hair cut, braziallian wax and my eye brows threaded. The best part were the prices. They arent as expensive as most NYC salons at all!! The prices are toally normal. Yolanda listed to exactly what I said and I was done with my color, cut and blowdry in less than 2 hours (which is unheard of at my old place...used to have to sit there for hours). It came out PERFECT! On top of that I was done with all of my services is less than 3 hours. I had such personal attention from the moment I stepped through the door. I was offered tea, coffee, water or wine (obviously drank the wine before my waxing). I believe Grace did my waxing and she was so gentle and sweet. Kept making sure I was ok. And lastly, eyebrow threading...AMAZING. My eye brows are so even and shaped perfectly. I do not have one complaint. Can't wait to go back!!! I'm telling all of my friends to go.

I made an appointment with DYS sight unseen because I was out of town and I needed an appointment quickly. From the moment I spoke with Asia over the phone, I knew that DYS would make sure I was completely satisfied with my hair. Asia set up an appointment for me with Sabrina who helped me to scout a hair supply store. Nina helped me pick up my hair supply materials so I wouldn't have to make extra time to go to the hair supply store on my own. From the owner to the managers and stylists, DYS gave me outstanding service from the moment of my telephone call till the moment I walked out of the door with my fabulous hair-do after my appointment!

Sabrina is an outstanding stylist who gave me the nicest layered haircut that I have ever had! She knew exactly how to handle the hair and took her time making sure my hairstyle was absolutely perfect. Sabrina is a professional who was completely invested in making sure I had the perfect look that I wanted. I highly recommend DYS and I especially recommend Sabrina for anyone looking for a GREAT professional stylist who knows exactly how to listen to her clients and create great style. I look forward to my next visit!

It took me the three monthe to write this review. I didnt have the words yet. Feb 29, 2008 I got married to the love of my life, I went to this salon to get the works: mani/pedi, waxing (my first Bikini) ,hair weave. wedding styling. I was so nervous. I have multi-textured hair, and am very particular when it comes to styling. I also have excema, and really need to be careful with chemical treatments. Iam so picky when it come to hair stylist, I have gone through many. I had one good stylist 10 years ago, I cried whern she left. SOFIA has taken her place. I have a new hair stylist..it was a wedding miracle. She is sweet, and funny, professional, and a perefectionist. She worked so hard on my hair, from relaxer, to weaving. She takes great pride in her work, which I respect immensly! I got so many compliments. They've got a custumer for life. The waxing was great too; including my bikin wax. I dont know HOW she talked me into it. She made me laugh so hard, I forgot to be scared. This is great all around salon, for many hair textures and styles. Thanks for making wedding great!

I was so excited for my appointment as the reviews were fantastic. I made my appointment a week prior and called the day before to confirm. They didn't have my reservation, even though I gave the receptionist my personal information and spoke with her about services. Luckily, they fit me in.

They were running late so they offered me a complimentary manicure. Mid manicure, I started looking around and didn't see any sterilizing products and wasn't sure if the tools were clean!

I received a wash, blowdry, and press or straighten (depending on where you go). I was a little annoyed when the stylist said she didn't have the tools to do my hair that I wanted. The receptionist who made my appointment assured me they would. I was a little skeptical of the Paul Mitchell flat iron on my Afr-Am hair, but the stylist got it straight...a big greasy, but straight. You'll get some movement, but not any free bouncy, airy hair.

I got to the register and the owner told me my bill. I was shocked because that charge wasn't on the menu but gave her my card. She said didn't your stylist discuss your cost? I said no, thinking, shouldn't you have asked the stylist that? She informed me that it was a $60 base price, plus an extra $20 charge for long (what defines long?) hair. I know that NYC salons can be expensive, but these prices weren't on the menu!

I asked why her brochure menu and website don't reflect the price she is charging and she said "I haven't had a chance for the webmaster to update it and I printed so many, I couldn't throw them out."

When you have a legit business and you make a financial mistake that could damage your credibility, you call it a loss and get new menus made. Plus, the names of their services are so "cute" that they don't even explain or "define" the service.

Overall, bad business practices. I also waited a month to see if she changed her site or menu, giving her the benefit of the doubt, and NO, it hasn't been updated.

I've never written a review on CitySearch but I think DYS deserves all the good publicity they can get. I found DYS online and paid my first visit just two days ago. I could not have been happier with the service. There was a multi ethnic staff, a full service menu, best products, great manicurist. Just excellent. The staff was one of the nicest and most accomodating I've ever come across. If you are going through the salon selection process it is well worth your money to try DYS!!!

I walked in and they accomodated me immediately which was great (made me a little nervous at first) I love my cut and color (shorter than i wanted) but it looks great. My stylist also told me not to do highlights and instead did color which I thought she could have easily said yes to the highlights which would have cost me more. My pedicure was nothing special but for the price of all 3 services, (cut, color, pedi and blowdry) all together cost me under $200 which i think is very reasonable. Dont mean to come off funny here, but I loved the two african american girls here (not my stylist) but SUPER friendly, honest, down to earth and actually helped me save money when my stylist almost overcharged me. This goes a long way with me. I will DEFINITELY be back even if just for a blowout. You girls rock!

Great Salon that makes you feel at ease as soon as you enter in the door offering you wine or water. They also have candies and other goodies available as well as a free internet laptop that you can use as you are waiting. Yolanda cut and blow-dried my hair and I was really happy with the result. She was attentive and listen to what I wanted. Price is normal for the area: not cheap but not very expensive either. An "homy" atmosphere and an attentive stylist make for a pleasant experience. I will definitely go back for a second!

After two cancelled appointments by my regular salon in Brooklyn, I needed to find a salon in the city where I could get a relaxer ASAP. I found Define YourSelf Salon and I could not be happier. From making a same day appointment, to getting a burn-free relaxer by Sofia, the experience made my day. I was somewhat afraid to go to a "multi-cultural" salon, but I can assure you they know how to do Black hair well.

I cannot say enough good things about this salon. I went there yesterday evening to get color and nail services. As soon as i walked in the door, I was offered drinks (wine!) and asked if I wanted to use their (free) internet service. My colorist, Sofia, knew exactly what I wanted and worked her magic to make sure my hair came out the color I asked for. I have been looking for that 'perfect' auburn color for MONTHS and somehow she managed to find it in the space of a couple hours. the FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! blowout was fantastic and my hair feels wonderful and soft after getting a deep conditioner. it is nearly impossible to find a salon in nyc that offers a complimentary blow-out after getting color. my manicurist was friendly and offered all kinds of interesting nail tips. all in all, the entire time I was there i had an amazing time and will definitely be making this my regular place. for the kind of service they provide, their prices are beyond affordable and this salon is truly a gem. i HIGHLY recommend it!!!

HI, I'm a young Black women who was in search of a very good stylist in the city.I searched high and low and was getting very frustrated. I had been natural for a year and wanted to get a relaxer and a good cut.I stumbled upon this place by accident although it was not a big mistake.I called alot of place looking for a place that AT LEAST had one person that specialized in "ETHNIC HAIR", all places said no.But this place told me they did and to come in for a consultation, which I did.SOFIA IS THE BOMB,she is so sweet and nice and very good at what she does.She is great.I am very tender headed and she was able to work a relaxer in without it stinging like all hell.She gave me a great cut ( without taking all my hair off)and gave me a list of products to use to maintain my hair.I have finally found a professional place that will continue to go to.Thanks Sofia your the best!!!!!

I was referred to DYS by a good friend who raved about it and I was hesitant to try a manhattan salon but very glad I took a chance as the service and ambience is one of the best I have ever encoutered at a manhattan salon! Emelyn is the best and gives professional advice on hair maintenance and styling and I have been back several times and referred other friends. They give 100% customer service and make the salon experience something to look forward to. This is definitely a salon that will be in a new york's best listing in the near future.

I was able to get an appointment for midday without much notification, the people were really nice. They offered myself and my mother refreshments and while I was getting my hair done they offered my mom a complimentary manicure (I'm not sure if you should expect this when you go, but it was extremely nice of them). They were very friendly and not pushy at all. My mom enjoyed the manicure and it looked very nice.

i got my haircut about 3 months ago with a girl named rosa, and im sorry to say that she didnt not do a good job, my hair was choppy, didn't fall like it should have, besides she got a bit of an attitude when i asked her to fix it. i called to make another appointment with another stylist, because this salon is in front of my office, and they seemed worthy of another try. i got yolanda, a very friendly and groovy blond lady. I was told by the manager that rosa isn't there anymore, and boy am i glad, i was kinda skeptical about having to see her again.
enough with the reviews,

SHE ISNT GOD'S GIFT TO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY. her skills are totally overrated.

going in this hair salon was the best thing that happened to me this week. i happened to walk in for a relaxer and a nice receptionist greeted me. she introduced me to emelyn or evelyn (sorry), who was very knowlegable of hair products and hair types, she impressed me. anyways, she relaxed my hair, and it turned out shiny, silky and beautiful, without burns.

she did a wonderful job, in cutting layers in my hair and the hair dry was to die for (it has lasted for 3 whole days already... and counting). I'm definitely coming back. over and over again.....

I went in as a walkin to get my hair blown out and styled. Evelyn did a good job, though I would've prefered it to be not as flat next time. I like it straight but to still have some body to it. Overall though, it was good and she took her time and she was friendly. The threading was not good. I don't know if the girl hasn't been doing it that long, but the thread got caught in my hairs on the side a few times and my eyebrows were not even in thickness or shape. So I'll go back for my hair but not for my eyebrows.

Rosa has colored and blown out my hair a few times, and I will always go back. She is absolutely amazing at what she does. She takes her time and does a fantastic job. I highly recommend her.

I have followed Rosa for 2 1/2 years now. She is by far the best male hair stylist around. I've traveled from the eastside of Queens to the westside of Queens now to Manhattan, I am sure glad I found you again, thanks to Belen. I've been meaning to write this review the minute I walked out of this wonderful salon! I was fortunate enough to walk in off the street on a whim. I left absolutely beaming with delight due to the more than incredible service start to finish and a fabulous haircut and eyebrow threading. Tara really made me feel like a million bucks on a day I really needed a boost. Thank you, Tara, for taking the time you did! I don't usually love my haircuts and I was so thrilled with what you did. Angie was a pleasure to work with as well. My eyebrows are back!

I highly recommend you try Define Yourself. Lovely people and service, no pretentiousness or attitude and in my opinion a real city bargain. I'll definitely be back! Thanks everyone! :-)

This is not just a salon, but an experience. From the moment I walked in I thought I had been transported to a sweet serene place somewhere not New York. I'm used to my NY salon service being impersonal, much like I'm a product on a conveyer belt. Not so at DYS. Every staff member was incredibly friendly, like they were sincerely concerned about my comfort and satisfaction (imagine that!). What a nice treat to be able to sip a complemenary glass of wine and browse the internet while I wait for my stylist. Speaking of my stylist, I can't say enough good things about Tara. She's professional and proficient, amiable and artistic, and arguably the best stylist I've ever had. I'm very please with my hair (textured highlights and a fabulous cut that makes me want to toss my hair around like I'm in a shampoo commercial!) and I will most certainly be going back. Oh, and a quick shout out to my manicurist Sofia (sp?), who assured me that short nails can be pretty too. Thanks to her fabulous work, I see that she's right!
So, thank you everyone at DYS. You'll be seeing me again and again and again......

I am a busy man who wants to look good. More importantly, the staff at DefineYourself Salons made me feel like a busy man who looks good. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a genuine smile accompanied by a chilled bottle of water (Poland Springs for those who may be interested). While the haircut was great and worth repeat business by itself (thanks Rosa!), the attention would have been enough. True they mocked me, but really, I had it coming...If you decide to try them, ask for Rosa, the Hair Stylist and Sofia, the Manicurist who is putting herself through school. So if you are busy person who doesn't bite your nails, go to Define Yourself Salons!

I am visiting from London and I come to NY often,waiting on 5th ave, wondering if I should spend almost 100 to get my hair done at Henri Bendell's salon, along came these two nice girls who not only complimented me but let me know of a salon they knew off that can make my hair look fabulous. Weird......it was a blessing to not only save me money but the service was so relaxing, professional and superb... Rosa gave me her business card and met me at the salon.....a good looking guy gave me a bottle of water.....

My hair was done in no time and it looked fabulous.....It's as if she knew instantly what I wanted.....Rosa saved my day and money....I paid only 35 not to mention that I would have paid Rosa the 100 for the service she provided........I am glad Rosa saved me on 5th.
....and she really knew what she was doing.

Great personality.

I was in the neighborhood tonight and decided to stop into "Define YourSelf Salon" for an eyebrow threading. What a nice experience! The staff all smiled and welcomed me when I came in. It seemed so uncharacteristic of Manhattan that I was actually confused, looking over my shoulder to see who they were talking to. Nope--it was me! The owner introduced herself before introducing me to Angie--my eyebrow stylist. She really was an artist! She was very considerate and exacting, and gave me a temple massage at the end. The threading cost $9, and I know you can find it elsewhere in the city for $6--but that's at crowded threading salons where the staff treats you more like a burden than a welcome guest. When I paid my bill, the owner gave me a bottle of water to take with me--just because I mentioned it was hot outside! If you really want to feel welcome and pampered, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!

My older sister was getting married last weekend and my hairstylist retired about a month ago. Can you imagine my luck?! Anyway, one of my co-workers told me she went to this salon "Define YourSelf Salons". She told me they were new but the stylist she had there was amazing. With me being in a huge bind, I had no other choice but to take my friends word. Boy, was I happy I listened to her! My hairstylist's name was Rosa. she was very attentive and thorough. I made things a little difficult for her at first, for the simple reason that i was a nervouse wreck! Rosa took my nervouse energy in stride and turned out my hair in less than an hour! I was looking and feeling great when leaving the salon. The staff there is warm, polite and very welcoming. For the amount that my bill came to, for my updo, I know for a fact that I couldnt even get a blowdry in most other high-end salons in the midtown area. Rosa and the salon just found a new client for life!!!!

Am I in the south? Are New Yorkers really this friendly? This can't be 212? Welcoming, pleasant staff, charming decor, and GREAT PRODUCTS. Not only are they great, they go about explaining each and every product that they use in your hair...and even throw in some complimentary "trial" products just to pamper you. Emelyn (sp) was exceptional. Great stylist, and did it with a smile. I highly recommend. 4 ****'s.

The haircut I got by Rosa was average, and I've gotten the same or better done for less money. She was rude when I asked her to go back and add more layers because everything blended in and I specifically asked for chunky layers. The eyebrow threading by Angie was below average and again, I've had much better for 1/2 the price. In my opinion, the reviews are not an accurate indication of the quality of their services.

I HAPPENED TO GO IN AS A WALK IN TO DEFINE YOURSELF AND I WAS RECIEVED WITH SUCH A WARM STAFF. MY STYLIST WAS EMELYN AND SHE WAS SO FRIENDLY AND PROFESSIONAL. SHE EXPLAINED EVERY TECHNIQUE AND THE PURPOSE OF EVERY PRODUCT WHILE SHE STYLED MY HAIR, I FELT VERY CONFIDENT OF HER SKILLS AND WILL DEFFINATELY GO BACK. MY HAIR LASTED THE WHOLE WEEK. MY MANICURE WAS ALSO GREAT. VERY RELAXING HAND MASSAGE AND MOST OF ALL NO PAIN! THANKS TO ANGIE!

I went to have my hair colored at one of those supposed "High-end" salons in Midtown a few weeks ago. my color turned brassy and my hair was left in shambles. I wont mention who ruined my hair (Warren Tricomi) but needless to say, it required serious attention. One of my woking colleagues told me about a new salon with amazing talent and service to match. I went to Define Yourself Salons for corrective color and have to admit, after my prior experience, i was a little reserved in going to another so called "high-end" salon. WOW, was i surprised! From the minute i walked through the door, i was treated like royalty. Yolanda, my colorist, was very polite and noligable. she explained the reason my hair was in the condition it was and the steps needed to correct it. I was offered a complimentary manicure and sipped on wine while enjoying the comfortable and relaxing environment. their staff is professional and give off a welcoming feeling thats hard to ignore. You can even surf the net while waiting for your appointment. My hair is looking fabulous and i found a place i can honestly call "high-end" in every regard!!

I went to this salon two days ago and I loved my service so much that I'm leaving the stylist I've gone to for three years to go here. My stylist was Emelyn, she was very accommodating, always making sure that I was comfortable with the hairstyling decisions that she was making. Then, as I sat under the hairdryer, I got a manicure. Talk about convenience!!! To top all of that off, they also do eyebrow threading and waxing. I will be there every Saturday from now on. Rosa cut my fiance's hair while he waited on me to finish up my service; and his cut looks the most stylish it ever has. Everyone was amazing!

I went there after reading the reviews and was not impressed. I only wanted a blowout, and I must say I could of done a better job myself, the woman was not friendly and was very harsh, I actually have a scratch on my forehead from the brush, and she left my hair frizzy.

No more A train to the doobie spot...Finally, midtown has a salon that caters to the professional. I frequented this salon on my lunch break. I had a wash n' blowdry by Tara and it was fantastic!!! My hair had the body of a doobie, but the style of someone in Vogue. Great products. Reasonable NYC prices. And an ambience that is incredibly inviting. Would go back...again & again. In short, Joseph's Salon quality with the consumer's wallet in mind...

I had a great experience at Define Yourself on 56th st. Rosa was very nice and professional and gave me the exact cut that I wanted and all in less than 25 mins as I had to get back to work. Highly recommended, clean and friendly service.

BEST HAIRSTYLE EVER!!!!!
I love my hair and the salon is beautiful. The atmosphere is extremeley warm and inviting and the manager, a handsome gentleman whom was very polite and professional offered me water and or a glass of cabernet or pinot grigio. He introduced me to a young lady named Tara who greeted me with a genuine smile and directed me to her styling station to conduct a consultation. I explained to her how I was interested in getting a hairweave . Well, Miss Tara listened to me very intently and told me not to worry that I was in good hands, she explained to me in full detail what styles I could get and what would really compliment the shape of my face, she also explained all the different types of hair and which kind was ideal for the style in which we agreed .She also suggested that we do a protein treatment which was to be followed by moisturizing treatment. I decided to get the protein treatment that day and told her I would schedule an appoinment for the following day. I was extremeley impressed by this young lady's professionalism and her knowledge of hair. HUH, if you think that was impressive she led me to the shampoo area and after properly draping me she gave me a shampoo to die for and the positive energy flowing through this young ladies fingers had me so relaxed I felt totally confident in her abilities to deliver an excellent service just as was promised. After receiving what felt like four star service I was sent on my way with specific instructions on where to purchase my hair and I was so eager to return. Well to make a long story short I returned the following day to receive warm welcoming smiles from the very pleasant staff at DYS. I was greeted by my stylist Tara and my hair was taken care of with lots of tlc and I LOVE IT. The cut and style is AMAZING and I have been turning heads ever since. If your looking for a great place to relax and get an impeccable style at a reasonable rate try DYS, I am sure you'll LOVE it. I DID.

This place is sooo amazing that I dont know where to begin. First of all, the receptionist was so cute, polite and charming, that I knew I was in the right place from the start. The environment was immaculate. Very clean, yet comfortable and professional looking which is imperative to me. And then finally, the beautiful, energetic, and very talented Tara(I hope I'm spelling that right) who washed, cut and styled my hair like I was a celebrity. She even gave me tips on how to maintain my hairstyle from home which worked because I got my hair done 2 days ago and its still as fresh and bouncy as the day I had it done. The way she handled my hair I could tell from the very start that she knew exactly what she was doing, and knew exactly what I wanted. The prices are moderate which was shocking to me being as though I even received a complimentary glass of wine while I comfortably sat under the dryer (didnt I tell you this place is fabulous!) Tara tended to the specific needs of my hair which was great because after she was finished I felt beautiful and very confident. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to experience exceptional customer service in a very clean and relaxed environment and above all else, a place that will give you the look that you want. I cant wait to go back.

Being apart of the corporate world, especially in midtown, my time and needs are extremely finite. luckily, i found this Salon! they catered to both. i recieved a haircut that made me happy both in my soul and wallet. i find it hard to believe that in this day and age, a New Yorker can recieve treatment and services of this level of quality and price..... especially in Midtown!!!!! p.s. The staff is second to none!

The staff at Define YourSelf Salons are so sweet. They really took care of me. My coat was hung up and they offered me a bottle or water or my choice of red or white wine. I received this incredible head massage during my shampoo and I almost fell asleep,...it was so relaxing......I have long hair but it doesn't have much body.....I told the stylist that I did not want to take any length off. I finally found a stylist who LISTENS.......I absolutely love my hair, it is exactly what I wanted. Not only that she didn't spend hours on my blowdry......in fact I believe it took about 20 minutes.....I am definetely returning to this salon because my confidence was returned to me and I made it to my meeting on time. Keep up the great work....

I had a full set of highlites done and am really satisfied with how natural it looks......I was well taken care of and my roller set was perfect. I really like how efficient the dryers are.

The staff was very nice and checked on me often offering me magazines and water. I enjoyed the up beat music which made me feel comfortable not bored while I waited. The salon looked fabulous and is very clean. I was also able to use my labtop which made me feel like skipping starbucks for lunch. I will definetly recommend this salon to every executive male and female I know.......VERY COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE....

Define yourself Salon is one of the best places where I have gone for a haircut. I was greeted in a very friendly matter and even offered refreshments. The hair wash was the to die for and the staff is very courteous anf capable of doing its job. Very professional, im definately going back!
