I have only been here three times, but Mercat has already become one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I always sit at the bar and order a few small dishes. The wine list is excellent, the bartenders friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is delicious, managing to recreate traditional fare (I??m a very lucky girl: I got to live in Barcelona for several months so I??ve had plenty of experience with p amb tomquet, embotits, fideua negra and that wonderful spinach with raisins and pine nuts) but with a modern twist (a little lighter, a little more sophisticated). Good food always has a positive effect: the crowd has always been fun and friendly. Expensive but well worth it.

I came to Mercat thinking that it??s just another tapas spot but left the restaurant longing to return again. The atmosphere was dark and romantic yet vibrant and trendy. It had a rustic and warm feel to it with wine shelves overhead, exposed bricks, candlelight and big wooden communal tables with cleverly placed tall vases which separated seatings. The menu boasted a variety of small plates from the Catalan region in Spain, and was difficult to order without the help of the waiter??s recommendations since everything sounded so good! We finally went with a variety of dishes that were all excellent - from the tuna tartar to the jalapeno fish to the duck and brussel sprouts. My only complains were that the waiter took a long time to get our dishes and wine out in between, and the noise level was moderately high. But these are just nitpicks ?? I definitely had a positive experience overall and would highly recommend this as a nice unhurried date spot. Every tapas dish that I had there was delicious. The prices were reasonable and the wines amazing! I hear that the menu changes often so I??m definitely coming back to try more tapas!

I've been to Mercat once this past February on a date with my then fiance and loved the food, so we decided to choose this location for the reception dinner of our wedding. We wed this past august 8th and had a dinner of about 13 in their basement. The service/food wasn't as great as I had remembered, but I figured it was forgivable being that I was pretty happy that day. Maybe 20 minutes after we left, I realized that I had left a folder with my marraige license and tucked inside was also an envelope with our wedding gift of about $500 cash from our family. We immedietly returned to a folder without the cash inside. The whole restaurant crew, manager included claims to know nothing of it. I am in disbelief of the whole thing still. We never filed a police report that night only because my husband refused to end our weddding day calling the police. I recommend never to go to this place!

This restuarant is worth it. I recently flew to New York from Miami on a business trip. This last tuesday I went in to Mercat for a business dinner and was blown away. The food was great, and the service was even better. Anyone who wants an evening of pure bliss should head to this tapas joint

great food and a fun Spanish wine list, very trendy crowd, high prices - but the food is good, portions are generous for tapas, and the neighborhood is trendy and expensive anyway; this place is very very crowded - i was there on a Monday night and had to wait ages just for a seat at the bar, where i was bumped by everyone who passed by; service is great - very prompt and friendly

I went to mercat this evening and I had a wonderful time. My girlfriend and I celebrated our one year anniversary, and I was blown away. I guess right now they have two chefs from spain in the kitchen that are from really renowned restaurants in spain. Whatever they are doing is amazing. The veal cheeks are awesome and the lamb is the best I have had in a long while. My server was top notch and the wine suggestions were great. Any one who likes spanish food will be blown away.

Service was spectaculor. Even the manager took some personal time assisting me with finding a night club to visit afterwards. Ambience was very comfortable and cozy. Absolute best striped bass I've ever tasted anywhere. Portion size was exactly as wanted. Prices where a bit above par, but all the other factors helped make up for that. Would highly recommend.

I've eaten here a number of times since last summer. Just went back last Friday and although the food wasn't as good as it was a few months ago, it is still pretty phenomenal and very good. Also ate at Boqueria this weekend and Mercat is a lot better. The food has more flavor and is more exciting than Boqueria. I would still recommend Mercat!

I live in the neighborghood and this used to be one of my favorite restaurants. While the service has always been poor, the quality of the food really began to deteriorate after the summer. Moreover, the menu is stale and some of the items they have added such as collared greens really made me wonder what is going on at this place. After several very disappointing meals here I no longer recommend this place. For good Spanish food check out Casa Mono, Degustation, Tia Pol, Boqueria or Pipa.

I used to go this summer and the staff was friendly, the food decent, and the wine list pretty good. This time, the hostess didn't even let us in (Most tables were empty and the bar was pretty empty too, but she said that we needed to wait over an hour to get a table!! And she didn't even let us go downstairs, pretending that there was no downstairs bar!) ridiculous attitude and not customer friendly - they lost a customer that was pretty loyal until then.

This is the first time I write a review, why now? because I'm from Spain and I always look forward to go to new spanish places. Mercat had a great atmosphere, we were seated right away (we had a reservation) and the service was excellent. But....the food was way to expensive for its quality, specially the spanish omelete, it had nothing to do with the real one in Spain. It tasted really bad and It had no potatos in it (which is a main ingredient). I didn't feel good after eating it and the next day I still had stomach ache. If you go don't order tortilla espa?ola!

the food is too salty that you can't even taste the ingredients themselves. the secret of a good cuisine is in the quality of the ingredients. food in this restaurant comes with so much salt and paprika that one cannot even taste the food properly.
the service was very good but quality of the food doesn't match it's prices.

Having lived in Spain and eaten at almost every tapas restaurant in the city, I have to say my girlfriends and I (some of whom also lived in spain), were totally let down with Mercat. We waited over a half hour despite having a reservation. Once seated, we enjoyed a plate of jamon serrano, but just about every other dish that came out was incredibly salty, and greasy. I much prefer the food at Tia Pol, despite its size. When we complained to the manager, she turned her nose up at us, as if she didn't care. Typical downtown attitude, and there are too many great restaurants in this city to bother with this place. We did enjoy a wine recommended by our waiter, but it didn't make up for the painful food or the noise level which bordered on the level of a rock concert. We all were in shock to see the bill at the end of the meal. For a tapas bar to charge those prices is a bit much.

I studied in Barcelona and this place feels authentic.I love the warm space. The pork belly and Tortilla Espanol are my favorite dishes. The staff is friendly and I didn't mind waiting the 20 minutes for a table. The churros are delish. Will make reservations next time for sure.

I was really dissappointed w/ Mercat. Our waitress was surly, unattentive, and generally annoyed w/ us (we gave her no reason to be). The food was tasteless w/ the exception of the extremely fishy shrimp dish. The hanger steak was in need of flavor (I requested salt and pepper...she was annoyed again by this). The best part of this meal was the Cava. I def will not return. Tia Pol, yes. Mercat, no.

Pushy waiter (had the "u must buy more stuff approach") condescending attitude too.

Wine list was good but not exactly budget.
Then the food comes, fried potatoes with spicy mayo
(genius) quite good I suppose but I could make that in my sleep.

Shrimp a la salty bas**d. So salty (but nice shrimp).
Clams on the old shell, clams were very tired indeed and the broth was a salt fest too.
Hanger steak, nice meat, parsley topping a bit weird, onion medley underneath would
be nice but was SWIMMING in oil.

everything was too small of course and they charge regular portion prices (alta
kicks this place all over town in my opinion).

I am bit cheap but I pay a lot for good meals. I really get mad when its overpriced and just ain't good, we are spoiled in NYC I guess ..

I had very high expectations for this place given that I love tapas and it's in my neighborhood, however I think it misses as often as it hits.

Let's start with the positive. It's a very cool space, there is an outstanding wine, cheese and ham selection and the bar up front looks great.

Most importantly, the food was very good and there are some dishes I still want to try so I?ll be back.

Now for the negatives: Too noisy. Granted, I went late Saturday night but my girlfriend and I had to literally scream at each other over the table.

Also, the service was slow and when we placed our order the waiter told us we would still be hungry. I am always willing to accept a recommendation from someone who knows the restaurant better than I do but my idea of tapas is to be able to keep ordering if you are still hungry. By the way, as it turns out we weren't. Oh yeah, our bread never came either.

Finally, and I know this New York and I know Mercat is on Bond St. but not including the wine, our bill came out to $60.00 for 4 tapas, one of which was a potato and allioli dish (excellent by the way). That's not the way I remember tapas in Barcelona.

Finally, and this might be just me.... they have a gorgeous leg of Serrano ham near the bar in the bracket sort of thing you would see in Spain. However, the ham itself is cut in a meat slicer rather than the traditional knife. I can?t understand that. I know that it makes things even for presentation purposes and it's more efficient to use a machine but that eliminates all of the character of perhaps the world's greatest pork product. I think if a pig is going to give up its life and leg it deserves to be treated like they treat it in its home country.

For a place really markets itself as a slice of Catalonia, they should learn how to slice ham like they do in Catalonia.

Wow! I had high expectations and they were met and then some! From the moment I met my friend at the bar while waiting for our 3rd party, we were given water without having to ask. This was a Thursday night just before our 7pm RSVP. We were seated back by the open kitchen and our server, Lina, was knowledgeable and went above and beyond -- she wrote down the names of the cheeses that we tried at my very gracious request and was on top of everything. Food was stellar -- seared scallop special with super baby asparagus, cheese plate, pork belly with cherries (wow!), sweetbreads (fried, not greasy and super moist inside) with fennel and salad (wow!), razor clams with bacon vinaigrette, monkfish, and churros w/ chocolate dipping sauce (a MUST for dessert)! I can't go back soon enough! Only drawback, it gets VERY loud in there just from people talking!! I'm hoarse today!

Although wary of tapas restaurants other than Casa Mono, last night my "dining partner" and I decided to check on this new place. What a pleasant find! The staff was very helpful despite the packed house. Our waiter was patient during my multiple questions. The sommelier helped us choose a fantastic wine (unfortunately I don't remember the name it is something like Jean-Louis 2001) We had a truly flavorful spanish sheep cheese to start, it was pasty yet creamy, smoky and robust. Then we had the salt cod fritters, which were good (the fish mixed with potatoe and cheese fried) but a bit ordinary. The Fideua Negra ( literally meaning black noodle) with Sepia and it's Ink was very interesting. The noodles mixed with the chewy sepia had a great consistency and the flavorful ink sauce left our tongues a blackish blue! :)
Unfortunately the Guinea Hen, which was greatly recommended by multiple staff members, was a bit boring. It reminded me of chicken fingers in a way, and the sauce did not make it anything too interesting.
All in all, however, it was a nice dinner out. It is worth checking out.

I will join the consensus and highly recommend this restaurant. Yes, it's busy and crowded (even on a Tuesday), but it's a fun dining experience that is a change from the ordinary. We tried the majority of small plate items on the menu. The grilled shrimp is amazing (we ended up getting another order). I'd also recommend the monkfish, the artichokes with fennel and their version of brushetta. Unlike one of the other reviewers, we found the staff was friendly and helpful. I think it's all in how you communicate with them. The waiter really assisted us in our selection. The wines were especially good. As the one reviewer mentioned, there is no signage on the outside of the building, but any savvy person will easily find the restaurant by simple process of elimination.

Overall, although it was a bit noisy, we had a wonderful time and we'd definitely go back!!!

There's no sign! Do these people think that not having a sign is cool? When I walked in, I mentioned to the man that claimed he was the manager that they should get a sign, and he smugly told me that they didn't need one. On the get go this faux Spanish tapas joint left me with a bad taste. My girlfriend and I had a 9:30 reservation. I understand that they were busy, but I started to get annoyed at around 10:00 when we still hadn't been sat. I was sent to the bar where we got two glasses of cava. The same manager was sitting at the bar knocking back a glass of wine. I was so annoyed at the lack of respect that we left. It looked like the staff was working hard, but the guy who claimed to be the manager just swaggered around the bar, leaning, drinking, ignoring. I don't claim to know how to run a restaurant, but I do know that first impressions are important. I will never go back there and I wouldn't be surprised if the owner (i think he's a trust fund kid who has no idea what he's doing) didn't clean up their act . What a huge letdown!

I will never go back there and I wouldn't be surprised if the owner (i think he's a trust fund kid who has no idea what he's doing) didn't clean up their act . What a huge letdown!

Pros: It's pretty

Cons: Bad communication, inexperiened management

Atmosphere. Se*y. (Sorry for the *, citysearch doesn't allow the word with the "x". play along.) The kind of se*y that makes you feel se*y just for being there. It's dark, mysterious and romantic (not date-y romantic - the diners there consist of couples and groups in equal number). It has a nice energy. Impressive service - attentive & engaging. And people were supportive when my friend drunkenly/clumsily dumped his entire glass of wine on a very lovely young lady ( a pretty crowd, but not obnoxiously so). And please don't take this to mean the place is rowdy -only my friend. It's classy. This place strikes a nice medium in many ways. But speaking of wine - it's Spanish labels only. Not my forte. But there's a very knowledgeable sommelier if it's not yours either. Ask him for something "exotic". You'll love it. Maybe "2 bottles" love it. As for the food - delicious. I sat at the bar at the back where one is able to oversee the "eye candy" back there prepare your delicious meal (which is not in any way bias-ing my opinion). Be careful at this bar & sitting near/underneath this bar- glasses might tumble off onto others. This bar overseeing the kitchen seating also gives it that Degustation feel. Love that place. I had the squid, sweet breads, sardines, pork belly and the noodles with Sepia. These are my staples (minus the Sepia). Does that make me a jack a--? Probably. If these items are on a menu, they are to be ordered. And they compare with the best of them: squid (Boqueria); sweet breads (Momofuku/Red Cat); and pork belly (Izakaya Ten). Complimenting the pork belly with cherries. Genius. The Sepia. In my opinion, a dish is good when you distinctly remember its taste the next day (despite your 2 bottles of wine). Crave it the next day and are convinced that you could eat it every day for a month. That's the Sepia. So, I had double Sepia and no dessert so can't comment on dessert, sorry. Disappointing, I know.

Pros: Food, atmosphere, service

Cons: Make reservations in advance; was there only 1 bathroom?

Went to Mercat last week with my girlfriends for dinner and drinks. Overall, we had an amazing experience, and since we're all foodies, we can be a tough group. First off, the room is great and is full of good energy. We loved the overhead wine storage, above our table - very clever designer. Since we could smell the food coming out of the open kitchen we knew we were in for a good meal. Among our favorite dishes were the pork belly, the tortilla, the sepia with the black ink, the sardines and the guinea hen. A man from Spain did this tall pour of wine where you hold the bottle over your head and pour it into a glass - it was great. The place was rocking and everyone was passing around this odd-shaped glass vessel and drinking wine out of it!! Its a really festive place with great food and we can't wait to go back for my birthday!! Luckily I live close by!!

i arrived at 7pm. nice music, beautiful place, very helpful people. i love the look and design of the place. the atmosphere is wonderful... i had a ham assortment, blistered peppers, sweetbreads with fennel and capers, grilled sardines, monkfish with ramps, snails with chorizo, seared and marinated tuna, braised pork belly with asparagus and cherries, churos, coffee, and two bottles of wine... a dinner that went well over three hours.... i had great conversations with the couples sitting at the tables on both sides of me -- all of them, since i was there quite awhile... this place has wonderful spirit, and people who eat there are adventurous, everyone seemed very happy there be there... i would be in heaven if i could eat the braised pork belly for dinner every single day -- i will try a more realistic goal of once a month -- this dish is really really quite delicious... awesome wine selection by the bottle AND by the glass, lots of fun beers.... i sat near the kitchen, the chef offered me cava from a really cool container the kitchen staff drinks from (no lip contact, it's a thin-stream poarer)... i had an amazing meal and an amazing experience. 10/10. cannot go back soon enough!
