All those ladies who have been salon searching or staring longingly into the mirror, wishing their hair would suddenly look like a Victoria's Secret model's (or like a David Yurman campaign), look no further! I spent a long time reading reviews and looking at "best of" lists before booking with Jaleh at AKS Salon. I was nervous, because this was my first venture into a true "New York" salon.

I am thrilled. For my entire life I had beautiful blond hair until I died it dark brown a couple years ago. Since then, I have been trying to bring it back to a beautiful blond. I went through a lot of unsatisfactory colourings and ended up with yellowish, very solid, unflattering, blond. Jaleh looked at my hair and knew exactly what to do. It was wonderful to watch her work, it reminded me of sitting in the park watching the landscape painters. Jaleh is beautiful and elegant and it comes through in her work.

After my wash and blow dry I looked fabulous and had the kind of hair I'd been looking at in magazines. An extra bonus is that I don't need to go again for another ten weeks, because of the balayage technique and colours Jaleh used. I am very excited (and relieved) to have found Jaleh at AKS and have already started referring my friends.

I hate to be the one to break AKS Salon's 5-Star streak on here, but I really was not that happy with my experience at this salon.

First of all, the receptionists are not friendly, nor are they knowledgable. I had specifically explained what kind of color service I needed, and yet, the person that scheduled my appointment did not allot enough time for my color, and therefore, the stylist was not available to actually cut my hair after the colorist colored it. I actually left there without getting a haircut, and I must mention that the receptionist tried to charge me for the cut that I did not receive. I was also ignored when I first came into the salon.

Second of all, I found the ambiance of the salon quite aggravating. It's much louder than most salons I've been in, and on the day (Wednesday) that I went, there were lots of kids running around, picking up stuff, and pestering everyone. Also, If you don't mind feeling like you are in a factory on an assembly line, then, by all means, try AKS. Don't expect the stylists to spend a lot of personal time with you. There seemed to be a decent amount of "regulars" there, but aside from those, it appeared like the stylists/colorists were not too engaged with the clients. The interior of the actual salon is also kind of 1990's-looking, so maybe it's time for an update? Definitely not trendy!

The pricing is fairly reasonable, though for the level of service you receive, I'm not sure how great of a value it really is. Seriously, it's about a step above Dramatics, in my eyes. The only other positives I can mention are that they appear to sell a wide array of products, including Vincent Longo cosmetics, and you do get a complimentary blowout with color service.

Overall, I'm glad that I did experience this salon for myself, but I have to say that I will not be returning.

Carolyn DePalma is an incredibly gifted colorist. I change my hair color regularly and am *never* disappointed with the results. Over the past four years I've gone from nearly black to cherry chocolate to auburn to copper, through six shades of red from cranberry to pale strawberry, back to near my natural blonde, lighter than my natural color and then dark again -- and and it has looked fabulous every. single. time. I'm constantly getting compliments, especially from my friends, family, and co-workers who see all the transformations and are amazed that my colorist can make any shade look good on me.

Carolyn has a real talent for taking the ideas I have about what I want and making them into a reality that flatters my skin tone, eye color, and whatever haircut I have at the time. And my hair looks and feels so healthy and glossy! Most people can't believe I color it at all because it never looks processed. I can't wait for my appointments with her and always walk out feeling like a million bucks. On top of all that, she's extremely personable and attentive. She makes me feel relaxed and comfortable even on a busy day when I'm the last client and I know she must be tired. If you want amazing color done by a true professional who makes you feel like you have your own personal stylist, Carolyn's your woman.

Jaleh was the first person to color my hair 10 years ago and I will never trust anyone else. She is not only the BEST hair care profesional i have ever encountered, but pleasure to visit with every 4 months. People constantly praise my "natural" color locks - and if i like them, i reveal my secret weapon - Jaleh at AKS.

I've had my hair styled by Mika for years and I constantly get compliments on it. My hair is very curly and very difficult to work with. Mika has not only been able to tame my curls but also gives me tips on how to style it and the products I should use. Whether I wear my hair curly or straight, it always looks great and I owe that all to Mika!

I've been going to Mika Rummo since forever and she never fails to give me a great refresher and fabulously styled cut. She gives great tips to mend all your hair problems and has recommended some of my favorite hair products! The salon is very hospitable and professitonal, great experience every time and of course love Mika!

I was a stressed out bride looking for the right stylist to give me the perfect look on my wedding day. MIKA did that and more! She is so easy to work with, she knows what looks right on a persons face and gives great suggestions. I was so happy with the hairstyle on my wedding day. Three other friends of mine have gone to her for their wedding since. She is an amazing stylist!

Generally my hair is an unruly mess. Every since going to Mika, that has changed. She gave me a cut and style, I can work with. She also taught me which products and techniques work with my hair and which products to avoid. If you are looking for a trim or a drastic change, I recommend asking for MIKA!

So I heard this salon is really good so I decided to try it out. I get highlights and a haircut everyone is raving about, and I don't know what everyone is saying that is so good. If I'm going to pay all this money shouldn't they have gotten my highlights close to the root? When I looked in the back of my head in the mirror, my highlights have orange at the top of them and THEN fade into blonde. And my haircut?very mediocre. I'm not going to name the stylists I used here because they won't like it but this place isn't as good as everyone says. And I heard there is a legal suit with this salon and Frederic Fekkai

I have been going to Salon AKS for a few years now and I absolutely love it. Isabela is a wonderful colorist and I always get so many compliments on my hair after getting highlights. She is super friendly and always makes sure that I have a great experience. And the best part is that everyone at the salon is friendly. I would recommend Salon AKS and Isabela to anyone with pride.

I travel all over the world for work. I have had my hair cut and colored in Paris, Milan Australia and the list goes on. Hands down, the best highlights I have EVER had were done by Carmen Rossi . She is just an amazing colorist and human person. You really don't have to say anything, she knows exactly what to do for your hair. No need to travel half way across the world when the very best is Carmen Rossi, right here in NY!!!

The best hair colorist does not even need you to say anything, they just know exactly what would suit your face, personality and hair type. That is exactly what Carmen Rossi did for me. I have never been happier with my hair!

I have been a client of J Antony's for over eight years, and I would NEVER go anywhere else. I would follow him anywhere--except new Jersey maybe. J Antony is so skillful in adjusting my color as needed to keep it fresh and attractive. I never worry, never even ask why he's doing anything--I know it will look perfect.

I have also sent out-of-town friends to him. They were consistently wowed and thanked me profusely. One friend from Florida thereatened to move to NY (good idea) just to be able to use my colorist.

He's professional, talented and thoughtful. And the color is simply the best. What else could anyone want? It's worth every penny, even the hard-earned ones we are worrying about today.

Larissa has colored my hair for the last 3 years and has gotten it right every time!! I have a single process and half head of highlights and receive so many compliments on how beautiful and natural it looks. Larissa is a pleasure to deal with and really listens to what you want , but is not afraid to suggest her own ideas as well. I am a brunette, but Larissa also does an amazing job on friends of mine that are blond. I recommend her highly , as well as this wonderful salon.

This is a fantastic salon and the stories about being stopped on the street when your hair looks so great are what led me to AKS. I stopped a woman in West Hartford Connecticut to ask who did her color and she knew the AKS number by heart. Every woman walks out of this salon looking fantastic. First, of all, I want to start off by saying that I am a beauty writer, which (I think) makes me somewhat more qualified to review a salon! I was a bit skeptical of haircolor when I first went with my friend to Salon AKS. I was instantly convinced that color can really enhance your look when I saw my dark haired friend become transformed into a natural looking blonde (really difficult to do). Now I am a regular customer and I go monthly to make my dark hair look more rich. I've had color done in several really nice salons, and I have to say that Jaleh is the best I've come across. I have been a loyal customer of Jaleh's for awhile now because I am so pleased with how my hair looks and the service really cannot be beat. The staff always takes care of you and makes you feel relaxed and at home. The complimentary blow-outs that come with a hair color treatment are amazing...DEFINITELY ask for Jaleh and her rising star of an assistant Ming. They really care about their clients and they know what they are doing. Put down that box of do-it-yourself Loreal color from CVS and head on over to Salon AKS!

I have been going to *Jaleh* at Salon AKS for 10yrs+ and wouldn't think of going anywhere else! Her hand-painted highlights are unrivaled and always look as natural as if i had spent a summer out in the sun. Worried about the maintenance? Jaleh is the first colorist I've ever met whose skillful technique hides roots as your hair grows out. I've considered coloring my hair for years, but never touched it. I recently needed a change, so I got a friend's recommendation for a colorist. She told me about Sam at AKS. I was so nervous going in since it was my first time. I have dark brown hair, so I was afraid of getting that orangey-color you see on girls. I told Sam all of my fears and she assured me with her sharp consultation and great ideas. OMG. I am so glad I went to her!!! She gave me the most AMAZING highlights!! They perfectly compliment my skin color and don't look fake at all. My hair has the most natural sun-kissed look now, which I thought was impossible for my hair. Jaleh is pitch-perfect when it comes to color. I came to her after I'd gotten a botched color job elsewhere and she somehow made my hair look great. Her assistant Mingma made me feel pampered and in good hands. Keo does my cut -- he is the rare hair stylist who understands fine hair. He also understands timeless style, which really just boils down to making each person look her best.

I have been client of JALEH, the excelent hair colorist at Salon AKS for almost twelve years. She has a magic touch with elegance and she creats AMAZING HIGH LIGHTS with a great contrast with the hair color. She is an excelent hair colorist in New York city and she was an excelent colorist in Beverly Hills as well. I am not an easy going person when it comes to my hair, but she always managed to make me feel great about it. And it gives me pleasure when the ladies give me compliments and ask me who and where I had my hair colored. I highly recomend her for the ladies who care to look their best.

I seriously have some trepidation about telling the world via citysearch about J. Antony @ AKS, because he is by far the very best, most professional, most knowledgeable (style-wise), etc.,hair colorist in NYC, and I'm afraid if too many people find out about him, I will no longer be able to get an appointment. I have had my hair done by J. Antony for the past 10 years, and there has never been one problem. I can't tell you how many times perfect strangers have come up to me and asked me about where I get my hair done. J. Antony knows what he's doing - and he actually LISTENS to what you want. I have long dark blonde hair (well, it's a better blonde, thanks to J. Antony!) and the highlights "last". I NEVER get that super-dark roots look where you can see it all grown out. I don't know how he does it, but my hair looks fantastic for months. It is expensive, but I promise you, you get what you pay for. Your hair is the one beauty accessory that you wear every day, so it's worth every dollar to make it look fantastic. Without being over-the-top trendy, JA keeps your look current. He's delightful, professional, funny and easy to work/be with. I guess that's why he's the salon's Color Director. I adore him and I know you will too! Tell him Kathleen sent you!

Jonn Rhamanni is a superb hairstylist. He was recommended by AKS colorist Carmen Rossi - also terrific and has proved to be an artist whose skills I completely trust. In the many years I've been visiting hair salons I've never felt secure enough to say to a stylist "just create a look that you think is best for me". I know that each time Jonn styles my hair it will enhance my appearance, reflect my personality as well as comb, wash and style beautifully when I do it myself. In addition, I appreciate Jonn's personal warmth and ability to talk comfortably about topics from the mundane to the serious.

I always leave AKS feeling beautiful and well cared for by Jonn and Carmen. AKS is easy to get to, at 5th and East 54th, and is run professionally and efficiently by a well-trained staff.

Alain Pinon has been cutting my hair for nearly 20 years! Not only is he a skilled and talented stylist, but he is also a genuinely good and thoughtful person. Alain and his partners, Kao and Susanna, have created a warm, friendly, and professional environment at Salon AKS. I feel their staff is trained to be courteous and to make customers feel comfortable and welcome.
My teenage daughter has been going to the Salon for the last few years. Both Mika and Nyree have cut her hair and done a terrific job.
Needless to say, I highly recommend Alain Pinon and the staff of Salon AKS.

I have been a long-time client of partner Alain Pinon, who left Frederic Fekkai with Susanna and Kao to start AKS years ago (I followed). I have learned so much from him about how to care for and love my curly hair. I never loved it until he showed me what to do. He gives the most fantastic cuts, and then teaches you how to maintain the look at home. Eventually I added color to my list of services, with the amazing J. Antony. Everything at this salon emphasizes natural good looks, and if you're in to "low maintenance" they will work with you on that, too! I also love Nyree; I go to her for blow-drys, and she has also taught me so much about caring for my curls. Now my teenage daughter goes to Nyree as well, and her curls are looking fabulous. I love the whole staff here; you can tell they are really well treated because they stay, and they learn. You can't go wrong with anyone on the staff!

Carmen Rossi, of the AKS Salon, is the best colorist in New York and I've tried them all. She's the beauty's world's best kept secret. A fashion editor for a top magazine first told me about her and I've since learned that many top editors and beauty directors go to her. I really can't rave enough about her and my color always looks terrific. Best of all, she is a lovely and gracious lady.

Carolyn DePalma is the best hair colorist I've ever had and I've had a lot over the past 60 years. I was with her at Fekkai and found her again at AKS. She is so personable and always remembers your name and the last conversation you've had with her. My haircolor is perfect - she's the best with highlights!! People have actually stopped me on the street to remark about my color. No matter what theeconomy or my circumstances, I would never give her up!

I moved back to NYC a year ago and since then I have changed salons every time I needed a touch-up. I only heard of AKS Salon through my roommate who had a gift certificate she didn't care to use. When it was time for my appointment, I wasn't really looking forward to the result being anything other than what's its been in the past...just "okay"

They booked me with Sam Mara and not only did she listen to everything I was babbling but she also went straight to a photograph that best represented what I was trying to blurt out. I was so happy with the result! Its everything that I wanted. I have been trying to get the right-kind-of-blonde for a long time but never seemed to nail it...Sam Mara did!!

I never go back to salons twice. The ladies behind the desk were so sweet and the woman who checked my coat was adorable. I can't wait to go back there and even my roommate is jealous. She has been going to her salon for six years and now she is thinking about switching.

Speaking as a loyal client (4+ years and counting), i cannot imagine trusting any two hair professionals more than i trust Allison and Christopher. That's not to say it took 4 years to build that trust either - from the first cut and color to the most recent, I have had nothing but fabulous hair. They are both eager to listen to my ideas and offer their own, which are always in tune with the "season" and complimentary to each other (e.g., Allison's beautiful highlights bring out the genius of Christopher's cut). I've had all lengths of hair (from shoulder length to razor short in back) and can honestly say i have received compliments on every style and at least every other month. Five stars + for you guys!

Excellent Cut and Color by Alain and Allison. Two professionals with their client's best interest at heart.

Alain is both an excellent hair stylist and artist. I have a lot of medium texture hair. Dry from coloring. Alain works with my hair texture and cuts it so that it falls into place beautifully. The true test is that when I wash and dry my hair. It falls into place without any fuss.

Allison is a first-class colorists. She colors my hair a beautiful honey color with a few highlights. Allison colors my hair so that it complements my skin tone and looks very natural.

Just as important as cut and color is the professional atmosphere of the salon. I have been a client for years. The staff is always gracious. Appointments on-time. The salon itself is beautifully maintained. Lorraine

I have very long, very curly/ frizzy hair and I could tell you some nightmare stories about some cuts and blowouts I have had. That being said, I have had only positive experiences at Salon AKS and with Nyree in particular. My hair always looks beautiful, just the way I want it, and when I look around I can tell that all of the other customers are happy with their results as well. The few times that Nyree was unavailable the other stylists did a fine job but she is really top rate. She also has a wonderful personality which really makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable!

The best colorist in the tri-state area is J. Antony at AKS Salon. I maintain a home in Greenwich CT as well as an apartment in NYC but if I moved out west I would still have Antony as my "colorist supreme!" I have had my hair color beautifully pampered by Antony for over 15 years. He is also the Creative Director of AKS so he?s not just a technician: he teaches his entire color department the newest and best techniques. I?m a brunette ? with luscious caramels - and NO ONE knows my hair is colored to hide the grays. He also does blonde fantastically as my friend also enjoys the colorful skill of Antony?s and she has the richest honeys in her hair. And highlights!!! He is superb at all color techniques ? and he?s a cutie who is funny too, so sitting in his chair in a real treat for hair and spirit. And ladies, he?s in midtown so it?s easy to get there from anywhere so you can make a day of it in the Big Apple.

Carmen Rossi has been coloring my hair for the past 10 years during which time I've lost count as to how many times strangers on the street have stopped to ask me where I get my hair colored. My color is so natural looking that people actually think that I'm a real blonde! After following Carmen to AKS, I started to use Jonn for my cuts. He has a fantastic sense of style and I always leave feeling great about how I look and I have a cut that lasts and is easy to care for.

Some strive to wear the latest fashions, be it Armani, Vera Wang, or Oscar De La Renta. Myself, my hair is a fashion statement I wear daily. That's why I recommend Jonn Rhamani at Salon AKS. He's well trained, personable, and makes me feel as though I can step out fashionably on a daily basis.

I decided to let my hair "grow out" and become it's natural silver and gray with the original dark color showing here and there. I was very nervous about how I would look. Too old? I looked to Kao at AKS Salon to help me through the transition with the hope I wouldn't freak out myself or those who knew me. With his expertise in hair cutting, and his background in owning a fabulous hair salon I allowed my natural color to come through.
There has not been a day in the last six years that people have not stopped in a store or on the street to admire my hair cut. The comments are always about how beautifully it's shapped not only in the back, but surprisingly around my face as well. I continue to see KAO as often as I can-he makes all the difference.

I've been following J Antony around New York since 1982. My two daughters have had their hair highlighted by him, all to rave reviews. Because I live close to the Long Island border, I get my hair styled in Long Island and I've received repeated compliments by my hair stylist. J Antony has never let me down always giving me that lift I need. His personality is lively, entertaining and professional. His assistants through the years have been attentive, professional, personable and eager to learn. There have been many people who think I am crazy for spending the amount of money in a Fifth Avenue Salon. However, these same people tell me how great my hair looks. I decided a long time ago, when I had to wear a uniform as a NYC Paramedic, that my hair was even more important to me to retain some of my feminine qualities. Thank you to J Antony for always making the correct decision as to my color and being considered a kind of friend after all these years.

I've seen some of the best hair colorists in Manhattan over the last 20 years to maintain my blond locks - colorists with whom I've been extremely happy - but J. Antony is the best BY FAR. I'm 100% satisfied with his work every time. He's a true artist with a "less is more" approach. He's also a perfectionist (like I am), who pays close attention to each and every strand of hair he touches, giving his clients the most beautiful, natural results. I've been asked so many times by complete strangers on the street where I get my hair colored that I've started carrying J. Antony's business cards around with me. He's simply the best. I feel so fortunate to have found him. My goal now is to find someone who cuts hair as meticulously, and with as much care and attention, as J. Antony colors hair.
