Before we had a child's birthday party there, I went in person to speak to the manager about the costs involved and best times to come. In addition, I called ahead to make sure I could bring in an outside birthday cake. Neither time was there any mention of the $30 plating fee that appeared on the bill for the cake I brought that I would have been more than happy to cut myself at the table. I thought that was underhanded and mentioned it to a different manager who was on the floor at the time. He was downright rude even though I had just spent plenty of money there.
Another service issue was the lack of it. The orders took forever even though there were few customers. Noone filled up the water glasses.
Although the place bills itself as "kid friendly," I would not recommend it to anyone for sit-down service.

Pros: Decent pizza, good crust.

Cons: Poor service and rude management

What a great surprise!!! Dean's is among the best pizzerias in the city, rightfully on par with Grimaldi's, Lombardi's, and John's. The crust is thin, crispy on the outside and slightly charred. The sauce and cheese are great; pepperoni are out of this world... Perhaps the tastiest pepperoni anywhere! The service was efficient and ambiance was great! Unlike most pizza parlors these days, Dean's is actually a nicely decorated restaurant, a real treat for a Sunday afternoon. Needless to say, I will be back. Yummmm!

Pros: outstanding pizza, great decor

The white square pizza is the best on the UWS! I know someone below mentioned slow delivery. I ordered on a Tuesday night at 10pm and received my order quickly (~20 minutes?) The woman who took the order over the phone was very nice and didn't rush me at all. She also made suggestions when I asked her about some appetizers.

I've also dined-in and the restaurant is pretty inside (from the outside it looks like your average corner $2 pizza place).

We live seven blocks from Dean's. We ordered a small pie that took - I kid you not - an hour and 20 minutes to arrive. We called the restaurant twice to check on the order and both times were assured it had left, which, obviously it hadn't. When it finally arrived it was cold, soggy and ridiculously priced at $23. We will never order from this place again. A much better bet - always good and always reliable - is GB's (formerly Garlic Bob's).

Cons: Terrible service, food served cold, way overpriced

We had a reservation for 11 people, our inlaws were late, and Dean's seated us anyway. The waitress paid attention to our group, even though the inlaws did not arrive until 30 minutes later. Service tried to please us, and to encourage us to order before the dinner rush began. Sadly, the in laws took too long to order, and the pizza came out way before the entrees as the kitchen was swamped. I really felt Dean's dealt with our disorganized group very well. The food was NYC average, which is a cut above outside the city. Portions looked small, but were very filling. Personally, I am no fan of huge servings, and taking home leftovers that nobody remembers to eat. This may not be a five star place, but sometimes, that's not why you're going out to a restaurant. Good food, good drinks, good service.
